The way you talk about buying something speaks to my soul. The thought process and the hyper fixation…that’s me.

I have noticed that when I see an old wish list, maybe from a year or two ago, many of the items no longer interest me. Noticing this helps me pause on new purchases, because I realize there's an opportunity to save money.

When I was still living at home, working my first job and paying for my horse (and my food, phone, clothing etc), I had a habit. I compared the price to the price of a lesson with my horse (riding for a trainer). Like, for example, "this sweater cost X amount, that's 3 lessons - is it worth it?". My mother still finds it kind of funny, but I think it's a good one! Compare the price of the thing to something that feels important to you.

Good list! One additional thing I find helpful for myself works best with clothing, makeup, and shoes: Am I imagining myself in this red lipstick? Or am I imagining myself as someone else in this red lipstick? I try to take a minute to imagine how the thing will look on me, and how I’ll feel as myself in that thing. Does that make sense? Sort of making sure I know I’d be buying a lipstick and not a fantasy self or a fantasy life!

Great point!!! I had to learn this with Free People funky clothing. I will NEVER wear it. I like it - but it's not for me - so what's the point?!!

I am loving these rules. Especially the one about calculating how much time I would have to work. That makes so much sense

I always always hold in my mind 'buy nice or buy twice', and the way you describe cost per use ties in with that, and shows why it's so important that things last. Another thing I would add is 'longevity visualization' which Hannah Louise Poston talks about at length in her videos. When buying clothing, for instance, can you imagine yourself wanting to wear the piece in a year, 5 years, even 10 years. Also, it helps to imagine what the item itself will physically look like after a few washed/wears, in a year, in two years. Will you still want to wear it if it's not in pristine new condition?
On my wishlist- new boots, brown jeans and a couch (thats a big decision/purchase) This video is lovely and so helpful, thank you as always!

I am a list maker, if it is not on the list it doesn't go in the buggy. And I also have a 24-hour wait rule. That is long enough for me. I will be over just about any craving to buy overnight. Thanks for the video.

I have the same problem as you except my obsession is tools. I don’t have room for any more & realized when I tried to sell some that I wasn’t using that I was basically gonna give them away compared to what I paid for them. That experience really lessened my desire to buy more.

CPW or cost per wear is an easy way to decide on a purchase.

The “product researching” for me was a game changer. I think it has to do with the amount of time I become immersed in researching an item it can lose some of the luster so I know by the time I’m done researching and I still want it, it’s likely going to be a good purchase. Half the time by the time I’m done researching I no longer want it, so it seems to be a good balance for me to spend quality time with an item before I buy it 😂

I’m a guitar player. A lot of us have guitar acquisition (g.a.s.). I’ve been completely out of control over the years. I have reeled it in though.

I like all the questions you ask, but i in first place ask myself: Can my budget cover that expense? and How much of budget money i will use from that items budget category if i buy that particular thing. If the first answer is "yes", but with the second answer i see that i will use for example: 90% of my monthly budget or worse - 90% of my annual budget for that category, buying only one item, almost always i choose not to buy. If i pass these two questions, i surely ask all the other questions you mentioned.

Yes I totally understand the obsession/fixation to buy an item. I have never done drugs but I would guess it’s similar to what an addict experiences and it’s scary. I recently read a book called, “Dopamine Nation,” and it really made a lot of sense to me. I was at the point where I’d obsess about something until I couldn’t resist and then break down and buy the item. By the time it was delivered, I didn’t even want it anymore and was looking for the next thing to buy and I had to deal with selling it or returning it. I’m trying to love what I have. Mostly, the 30 day wait list works for me. By the time I revisit the list, I don’t even want the item anymore. Yes, I really enjoy Conscious Consumerisms channel also! Her deep dives are really insightful. Thank you for the video-you’re doing great!

I’ve always purchased very expensive cars, but I’ve driven them for between 10 and 15 8:02 years. So the cost per drive is well worth it.

I think the better thing is working on you as a person. When you straighten out your character you won't have to ask these questions. Work on your spiritual life and let God work on your personality. You will find you will be way more in control when God is in control of you.
