    Heat and moisture are bad for attics. When you don’t have proper ventilation in your attic, it can also raise your utility bill. A simple and cost effective solution is to install a solar attic fan.
    Here are the tools you’ll need:
    reciprocating saw
    caulk gun
    sealant
    pry bar
    carpenter’s pencil or bright marker
    screws
    The roof openting needs to be 14 inches around. The best way to mark it is to make a 14 inch round template, set it over the hole and mark your circle. Then you’ll just cut along the mark.
    Before you can install the fan, you need to put a bead of sealant around the underside of the flashing. That’s so it will adhere to the roof and give it a good seal so it won’t leak. Then you slide it underneath the shingles and over the moisture barrier and screw it into place. Also, put sealant under the shingles that you pry loose to seal them back into place, and seal the screws as well.
    That’s all there is to it. Barring no major problems, it should take about an hour to install. Solar attic fans cost approximately $300-500, but the great thing about them is they’ll never cost you a dime in electricity because the sun provides all of the power.

    So far, so good! I installed this fan yesterday. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh I've been watching a continuous radon monitor in my house for about a week, and the levels have been running between 4.5 and 7.9 pCi/L. Shortly after I installed this fan, the radon level started dropping, and in less than 24 hours since I installed it, the level is now 1.9. My basement is approximately 2,000 square feet. Total home square footage above basement is approximately 4,000 square feet. The noise level so far is very quiet. Mine is installed indoors, so I had to purchase a cord and connector. If I have any problems later, I'll update my review. But for now, I'm very pleased with it.Update after 48 hours: Using a constant monitor, my radon is now fluctuating between 0.38 and 0.45 pCi/L. I've moved the monitor to my basement and am getting a constant 0.43 reading. After 24 hours, and when I know the weather will be safe, I'll place the monitor outside for about 12 hours. I'm thinking that the 0.38 to 0.45 may be the outside "ambient" radon level. I'm using this monitor (purchased from Amazon): Corentium Home Radon Detector by Airthings 223

      @@solarfanman Actually, a solar fan is a poorer choice for attic cooling. Unless it is coupled with battery power it is inferior to just about any other system. My electric hi-volume attic fan with end gables would sometimes run until mid-night; long after a regular solar fan has quiesced. One of the fine qualities of my ridge vent is its siphoning effect which evacuates hot attic air sooner than a temp actuated fan and can continue drawing out hot air beyond the 85 degree shutdown temp of my thermal controlled attic fan. The roof fan and gable fan (separate applications) maintained attic temp down to about 100 which is about the on temp setting. Ridge vent did just as well but would cool attic down further than attic fan shutoff temp of 85 degrees.

    • @czarlguitarl
      @czarlguitarl 2 года назад +1

      Attics are HVAC sealed by definition, if it's not HVAC sealed it's just shoddy half-baked construction of an upstairs unit, and you can better blame AC leakage on the shoddy construction than the solar attic fan.

If I could find the builder of the home I live in, I'd punch out his front teeth for all the corners he cut that were designed to save him money. But since I am a owner of this residence and the attic is not sealed as you say it should be, I'm simply trying to avoid buying fans that are going to end up costing me money instead of helping to cool my attic.

      You attic is supposed to be sealed from the house but its not, there are tons of gaps. Your right, an attic fan will depressurize the attic space causing conditioned house air to enter the attic. These fans are a gimmick and are not even needed if you properly update your attic.

      @@petebusch9069 Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions on what "updating your attic" would entail?

    That is not how you install a fan to a roof, he is also wearing a bucket harness bad idea wearing that on a roof osha would shut you down for that.
