  • In this episode we turn faded / sun burnt gelcoat into "like new" through a simple process of wetsanding and polishing/buffing ! This is great for spot repairs, replacing old decals, or overall, improving the look of your boat! Details and keypoints listed below!! Enjoy and be sure to hit the like button/comment/or subscribe if you enjoy this and want more!
    Products used:
    1. 2 half sheets of 3m Westsand 800 grit paper
    2. Harbor freight Bauer multispeed buffer
    3. wool buffing pad
    4. Super Cut Buffing Coumpound (easily substituted with a gritty compound)
    5. small 3m or durablock foam sanding block
    6. PATIENCE!!
    The process:
-I start off ALWAYS with a clean/debris free surface
-Start by presoaking your wetsand paper 10-15 min
    - begin wetsanding process while continuously wetting/dunking your paper into the bucket
KEYPOINT: sand in a cross hatch pattern always
-for this video I wetsanded a 1 sq ft area for approx 5-10 min until uv fading was gone
-clean and dry surface/inspect for missed areas
-begin spreading your buffing compound by hand (gloves recommended)
-work 1-2 sq ft area at a time, starting with a 800-1000 rpm buffer speed, being patient, letting the buffer and compound do its job.
-intermittently check the surface temp with the back of your hand, should be warm to touch, not super hot
-wipe off residue with a clean rag, inspecting the buffed area for sand scratches
-continue the buffing process multiple times until all sand scratches are gone and desired gloss level is achieved
-bada boom bada bing!!!! youve got a kickass, color rich surface!
-apply an automotive type wax to protect from future fading!
Thanks for watching and feel free to comment or message with questions!

Your videos and personality are way better than mine.
I'd suggest, for a boat with that level of oxidation, what I do; compound and a buffer only. Might sound like something you've heard before but never the way I do it.
I'll save you time and money.
    Cheers!

As a new painter in boat industry even being green i agree with everything you have done to blend. Wet sand, then buff get the surface warm and use some pressure so build heat and to smooth out those scratches. There is a fine line of buffing don’t run it wide open 1000-1800 rpm is where i cap out buffers so you don’t burn through. Single stage paint jobs are much more dangerous gelcoated boats have alot more forgiveness.

Canadian boat owners. Don't try sanding the gel coat I freezing weather. It's not only brutal on your hands, but wet sanding gets unpredictable under freezing conditions. A garage or heated Insta-fab semirigid tent with tube heaters is needed

Awesome video I just purchased an older fiberglass boat & there are quite a few tiny hair line cracks, anything I can do about that?

Question for ya, I have a very nice 73' skv jet boat that has slightly chalky gel coat. But where there is a color stripe the po had it clear coated to be shinier. Clear is in fair shape. Would it be opening a can of worms to remove the clear? Should I just address the separate coatings/finish separately?

Nice tutorial, I was wondering how much someone can charge on a job done like this. I’ve been thinking of starting my own boat repair company

Better question: Why does this piece-of-shit GELCOAT fade? It looks like an old 1960's Volvo! Paint technology has gone way beyond GELCOAT. My car sits in the Phoenix sun every Spring, Summer, Winter & Fall. It has clearcoat over its paint base. It never fades! Why do we accept this poorly engineered miserable crap paint product as though we needed to suffer GOD's penance?
    Can someone please explain!
