  • Obviously not all players use traditional grip and not all players are drumline choppers, but I feel that ALL players would benefit from adding ‘Sterling’ to their practice routine since it’s jam-packed with goodness. And for those who want to add another layer of complexity to the piece, I’ve offered a few suggestions that I think lend themselves well to matched grip.
If you’re up for an added challenge once you can play Sterling as written at tempo, start by becoming proficient playing the original version starting with either hand. Then...
At 0:16 starts a string of eight sextuplets. As originally written, each sextuplet starts with the right hand. I added a diddle to the end of the fourth sextuplet, which turns the lead hand around. Another diddle on the end of the final sextuplet brings the lead hand back where it started.
At 0:36 starts two measures of hand-to-hand 16th’s. I added a diddle to the end of the first measure to turn the lead hand around. Another diddle added to the end of last group of 16th’s turns the lead hand back around. Not challenging, but consistent with alternating the lead hand when possible - something I personally like to do whenever possible.
Finally, at 0:48 begins a string of eight single-stroke fives. Again, these are originally written so that each group of five starts with the right hand. In my adaptation I change the lead hand at the start of the fifth group of fives and turn the lead hand back around at the start of the flam taps.

Thanks for sharing. I need to add this to my daily routine for sure.
And your 2-sided Vater pad is one of my 15 pads and is the most
responsive rubber pad I have ever played on. I used to have one of
the old school 2-sided Vic Firth (gray/black) pads and it resembles
that one from a responsiveness standpoint. Anyway, good to see
a drum set drummer getting into the drum corps exercises.
    Keep on drumming!

People keep hating on this but it’s good. Matched drip is valid and if the video isn’t flipped and you really did start on your left that cool too. Most people hating on that probably couldn’t even do it leading with the left. I love it, nice chops!!

the video isn't flipped, i play it starting with either hand. the take that was good was a left hand start so I went with it. Even though I don't use traditional grip, i can still have fun with this stuff! thanks for watching and for your feedback.

@@markgoodindrums your skills and hard work are evident. Playing as naturally well off the left as you do the right is not common among even high achieving marching percussionists.

I’m considering getting a vater pad but is it that quiet I need one for quiet practice

    • @bruh-ft7dz
      @bruh-ft7dz 3 года назад

a little late but it is a lot quieter than some other pads I've used and if it's still too loud you could get some rubber tips and the combination of those should be fine

Michael Marchetti week late but some people don’t learn traditional. The high school I’m going to go to still uses it. Traditional isn’t everything.

TheLil3K TheLil3K he’s also doing reverse sticking of everything. And if he’s doing drum corps stuff, then yes, traditional is everything given he’s doing snare but I can’t really tell what he’s going for because the accented sixteenths around 0:43 aren’t correct for either part, and it’s an easy way to differentiate

@@michaelmarchetti8902 first of all. It's reversed cause of the camera dumbass. so your saying every drum core member uses traditional grip so the tenors and basses use traditional? No cause clearly he is playing the tenor part on one drum cause that only play that piece on one drum. Drum one. The reason why I know this is cause I am paying attention to his playing and noticing him playing the tenor part. Maybe if you would pay attention you would know he is playing the tenor part 😉🤔 also he is playing everything correctly. Get your eyes checked.
