This is one of my top 5 favorite stories I've ever told you since I started making videos 2.5 years ago, so I hope you enjoy!
It's about a 74 year old man named Mike Hanopol, who comes from a beautiful island in the Philippines called Leyte. In his early life, he found out (from his father) that he has Jewish ancestry, so he spent 15 years living between the U.S. and Israel to learn more about his religion.
To this day, he remains Orthodox, keeping Shabbat and eating kosher -- which is not as easy as it sounds here in the Philippines, a country that's 85-90% dominated by Catholicism.
Oh yeah, and he's also a super famous rockstar from the 1970s, with several big hits around the country like "Laki sa Layaw." I didn't mention in the video that he opened up for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s in Tokyo, which is my favorite band of all time!
If you enjoyed this video, it would mean a lot to me if you shared it with your friends because I spent 3 days putting it together :)

Mike Hanopol??? He is a legend in the Philippines to those who remembered his songs in the 70' and the 80's. 😃😃😃
Hes not just on a level of celebrity, he is the one of icon of rock music in Phil.
I like that he emphasizes gathering knowledge. 🙏 Such a genuine person.
WOW! That is an amazing story and that's coming from a Filipino! I didn't know there was a Jewish Filipino! Thanks for sharing!
I met him early to mid 2000 by accident at a nifty fifties restaurant here in Blackwood NJ. His table was directly across mine and when I noticed him he seemed familiar as we sat across from each other. When I told my sister that he looks like “the Mike Hanopol of Juan de la cruz band” he heard me and he got up, walked to our table and shook my hand. He was surprised that a young guy my age would actually know him. He’s a really nice guy and down to earth person and I was honored meeting him of all places. I remembered him wearing his trademark beret.

Filipinos have countless banal singers, but this guy is not like the rest. He is a pro musician. I do not really get into jew or catholic or muslim thing but when I hear Mike playing guitar I feel whole new religion. Respeto!
He was a member of the rock band Juan dela Cruz Band together with Joey “Pepe” Smith, and Wally Gonzales. They band was considered one of the pioneers of Pinoy Rock. They gained prominence in the 70s.
Drew,
Your videos are amazing, !just the perfect length, perfect editing, perfect speed of the frames and clarity for the story. More than anything else the stories of the people and places are so interesting. Thank you for your videos. I can see that you are a very nice sincere grounded mature person who intends good for humanity. You connect people and always bring the best of them. You do not shy away from your roots or are not afraid to portray spiritual subjects. Great job.All the best.Blessings.
I never heard any news of him for decades until this video. He was popular in the '70s and '80s in PH with his songs.

Hello Drew, when are you going to have meet and greet in Manila?
Thanks for sharing this. Mike is a Filipino Rock Legend/Icon and knowing his story through you is refreshing. Thank you again
There 's a Chabad house in Cebu, Manila and President Duterte's ex-wife is Jewish also I read a story about some Filipino families with ties from Sephardic Jews fleeing from Spain to Philippines during Spain's colonization and how they discover their ancestral roots to Israel. A big thumbs up for the video.
Today I learned that he is a Jew. He is one of the legends of Filipino rock. He is that famous.. His song Laki sa Layaw is a classic here.
Wow! Nice to hear and thank you for sharing this video. I'm surprise Mike Hanopol is Filipino-Jewish. I like his songs. Like laki Sa layaw, etc. He is good. God bless you all.
Shalom. I am not Jewish but I refrain from eating pork, stay at home during shabbat and respect Jewish beliefs. They say we don't need to convert to Judaism as long as we follow the Noahide Laws practiced by Noah. I listen most of the time to Rabbi Tovia Singer and sometimes to Rabbi Skobac.
I do obey God's Torah because I believe in the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua Ha'mashiach.
I'm orthodox Jewish and have big respect for noahides. Be very careful not to fall prey to the Yeshua movement. It is the same old Jesus worshipping. Pray to God you already know.
Wilhelm Yo OMG I came back to tell you about Tovia Singer and then I saw there was more to your post were you wrote about him what are the chances!!! That is incredible!!! God bless....

Daniel 9:26-27
“And after the sixty-two weeks MESSIAH SHALL BE CUT OFF, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall DESTROY the CITY and the SANCTUARY. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall BRING an END to SACRIFICE and OFFERING. Wow! I love this story. This is probably one of the best. I would have never known that one of my favorite Filipino rocker is a Jew. Thank you Drew for interviewing the great, Mike Hanopol.
Sadly Mike's story as a Jew is a complete lie. The interview was done when the Rabbi and the administrator of the synagogue weren't there.
@@aryehmendoza its not ethical for you to call a fellow Jew a liar. And what made you say that this is all a lie?
@@טורפרנקה since when did telling the truth and exposing the fakers become wrong? I'm sorry to pop your imaginary cloud, but the fact remains that Mike Hanopol is NOT a Jew. Ask the Manila Jewish Community. Ask the Diaspora Yeshiva of Jerusalem in which he tried to convert but they found Mr. Hanopol not very truthful

Just a quick note: the song he is singing is Hebrew, not Yiddish. It's from Songs of Songs (5:2):
"אֲנִ֥י יְשֵׁנָ֖ה וְלִבִּ֣י עֵ֑ר"
"I am asleep, but my heart is awake."
Maybe what he means is that he sings it in a yiddish accent - ani lishinu instead of ani lishinah

2 thumbs up men. Here in the philippines we respect all kinds of religion. .
Most of us here in the Philippines grew up listening to those songs by the Juan dela Cruz band (where hanopol used to be the lead guitarist of). As a matter of fact, if it weren't for their band's second album back in 1973 we won't have a burgeoning rock music industry here in the Philippines
Wally Gonzales was the lead guitarist not Mike. Mike play bass in JDLC band.

Yep.I never knew..He's that rock star un the 70s , 80s. He was a big star and everyone knew his songs.
I love Mike, he is a super amazing guy 💟💟💟💟
I'm confused... Judaism as an ethnicity is supposed to be passed maternally, right? His mother was Christian/Catholic/Filipino, so technically he is religiously Jewish but not ethnically Jewish. Am I wrong?
mfv89 no ur right
Did you hear the old man talking about his family?
Yeah it’s complicated. Judaism is more of an ethnoreligion than ethnic group. Halachik (according to the laws of Moses) Judaism stipulates that one is only a Jew if there mother was a Jew. If one’s father is a Jew, but not his/her mother, then while he might be ethnically Jewish, he is not religiously Jewish. But conversion is where it gets even more complicated. One can convert to Judaism, and then it is viewed as not only are they subscribing to the Jewish religion, but they are becoming part of the Jewish people.
This something many Jews can't unanimously agree on. I, for one have met Jews who don't recognize converts to Judaism as Jews. To them you can only be a Jew if your mother is a Jew. I even met one who claimed Jews with blond hair are not real Jews since blond hair is not a natural feature in the Jewish race.
Probably he made the conversion, anyone can do it.
Please come to north Sulawesi Indonesia, there are small jewish community with the only active synagogue in Indonesia
WOOOOOOW! I never knew Mike Hanopol’s Jewish! Amazing! 😮
It's nice to see videos that are under 10 min, so many have gone from 30 to 45 min.. it's just too long with the exception of a few who really have something to say. As always nice work

His blood is Jewish. Catholicism was introduced to the Filipinos by Spanish missionaries with the conquest of the islands. No regrets there. I am glad to be part of it and to know our Lord Jesus Christ. Mr. Hanopol has his Jewish roots and lives according to his identity. The Jews are our older brothers and sisters in faith. It was through them that God first manifested Himself and thus, God became part of human history.
