- Hello guys, welcome back to the channel. If you're new around here, welcome, I'm glad you stopped by, here you will find all things food, travel, Disney & fitness related (a mixed bag really).
I'm back with Craig in this video & we are trying snacks from Norway. We recently travelled there so thought it was only fitting we picked up some of their popular snacks to try. Let me know if you guys have tried any & keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming Norway cruise.

The writing on the Kvikk Lunsj wrapper is probably "Fjellvettreglene",
which translates to "The mountain code" which is a set of guidelines that'll keep you safe when hiking in the mountains.
These are the rules in english:
1. Plan your trip and inform others about the route you have selected.
2. Adapt the planned routes according to ability and conditions.
3. Pay attention to the weather and the avalanche warnings.
4. Be prepared for bad weather and frost, even on short trips.
5. Bring the necessary equipment so you can help yourself and others.

Good you stated that Kvikk lunch is better than a KitKat.... Giving it a 7 will almost ban you from travelling to Norway again, the government is very strict! Prefering KitKat would have given you a 20 year ban! 🤪

Brown cheese on fresh bread/varm baguette and with strawberry jam under the brown cheese is so good. Try it! Also, brown cheese, butter and strawberry jam on Norwegian waffles (and sour cream or «rømme» which is not as sour and its thicker).

orange is Apelsin in Norwegian, so it's not apple juice in solo
It's not sweetened cheese. They boil the whey until it caramelizes. So it's pure milk sugar.

I think the chocolate in Norway generally is too light and too sweet.
Just from a quick look at the whale sausage, it contains "only" 50 % whale. The rest is pork, pork tongue, salt, spices, pork protein, sugar, garlic etc.
A proper whale steak is 100 %.
Norway's brown cheese is technically not cheese at all. Its main ingredient is the whey left behind after curds have been removed in the cheesemaking process. As a by-product of the cheesemaking process, brown cheese is a classic example of wasting nothing. Leftover whey from the cheesemaking process is boiled down until it caramelizes.

@@littleniks I recommend tasting the brown cheese on some waffles or if you can get it, Norwegian vaffler, or maybe some bakery products like scones or something, with a bit of spreadable butter underneath, that gives the caramelized cheese a different taste

@@littleniks Whey, the byproduct of making cheese and butter, is basically all water and lactose (dairy sugar). The process of boiling whey down to a sweet concentrate is similar to how tree saps (maple and birch) and plant juices (sugar cane etc.), the difference is that Norwegian brown cheese has dairy added back into the "caramel" to make it a block of 'fudge-like cheese'. Norwegian brown cheese has many different styles that wildly change the flavor, the one you tried is called "Fløtemys" which has heavy cream from cows milk added at the end (fløte = heavy cream, mys = whey). Other variations can have goat or sheeps milk/heavy cream blended in different rates with cows milk/heavy cream. Typically the more goat milk/heavy cream the "sharper" the taste is, the one you tried "Fløtemys" is the mildest style with little to no sharpness. We also have seasonal spices added to the "Fløtemys" when autumn and christmas comes around, they're always a favorite in our household.
And yes, having a bit of sweet jam with Norwegian brown cheese is a must- especially if you eat one of the sharp styles. It's remarkably similar to the Peanutbutter and Jam combination, it even has a bit of that "drymouth" or "clawing" character. Only Peanutbutter has zero tartness or sweetness (unless added with sugars).
Bamse Mums (Bear snacks) has become a nickname for tourists in Svalbard/Spitzbergen for obvious reasons 😎

The reason brown cheese is brown is because the whey is double-boiled until the milk sugars start to caramelize.
Several of my mortal enemies on display here... Norwegian snack-producers don't play - this is why we walk everywhere.

The Kim's brand is originally Danish, but is now owned by a Norwegian company. Other than that, everything is pure Norwegian. The whole idea with the Laban Seigmenner is that they are stretchy. The slogan is "stretches a bit further". A super kid's snack. My favourites among Your snacks are Bamsemums and Smash. My favourite way to eat brown cheese, is on fresh bread with raspberry jam. Yummy!

I have to agree I finished off the Bamsemums & they are so good, same with smash (sad I didn’t actually bring more of this back) we have nothing like Smash over here.
Also a few people have said they pair the brown cheese with jam, so I’m definitely going to try it as I’ve some left 🤭

So a little fun fact: The Cartoonies are actually a cereal. One pack I belive is one bowl of cereal. I been eating them through the years but straight out of the package. Last time I got them I randomly read the backside of the package and your supposed to have them with milk. I would say I prefer them without tho. Just Straight out of the package. The cookie around them kinda get mushy.
Also there was way more chock late in them before. Idk what happened but when I had them last time there was barley any chocolate in them..
Oh my goodness no way 🤭maybe that’s why they tasted so different! When they used to be over here I’m so sure they were marketed as biscuits 🤭 but we don’t have them anymore! So yeah maybe they have changed!

Sørland Chips literally is bargain bin chips, but "made with love" and higher quality than more expensive brands.
Slice of bread and butter under that cheese always helps, awsome when on fresh baked, slightly warm bread. Some do strawberry jam on top as well.

On the bamsemums pack is says included mums. It is a word play as moms is a common word for VAT.
I'm from Norway and I don't eat whale meat! 😅And I don't think it's very common to eat it.

So, Fløtemysost is not a snack - it´s a spread! Have it on toast, that´s amazing! The heat really brings out all the best flavours! Try to combine that with some apricot jam, it´s delicious!

Toblerone isn't that famous over here. I think the only place you can get it is like at the duty-free at the airport :D To be honest, I never really liked the honey in them.

As a norwegian I agree that Cadbury's chocolate is really really good. I still prefer Freia, but Cadbury is really really good.

Firkløver is a great classic Norwegian chocolate, but the newer "Fruktnøtt" is an absolute delight!

0:44 - what do you mean? Crossover between Norway and Sweden or between NI and Norway? As a Norwegian, I don´t think we have a lot of common ground when it comes to any kind of foodstuff. I mean, we buy a lot of our snacks in Sweden, but the border shops are more Norwegian than Swedish in and of themselves. In general, I think it´s fair to say that the Swedish taste is a lot more towards the sweet, whilst Norwegians often prefer sour or salty.

When we then went to Norway recently we noticed some of the snacks we had in the Swedish video 🤭 maybe it’s just more the sweets etc are similar or have a crossover.
4:29 - the bird is a Marabou stork, symbol of our largest chocolate company, Freia. Also the name of the biggest chocolate producer in Sweden, which is closely related to ours. I love that you actually broke the "fingers" off to eat one at a time, the proper way! We´ll get a hizzy fit up here when people try to take a bite out of the entire plate ;)
5:48 - My favourite type of chips! Yeah, they are "high quality" if you´d like to call fatty, salty snacks quality ;) You should really try "Spansk paprika" though, they´re even better than this one IMO. If you want Norwegian tradition, I´d say you need Maarud´s "Ost & Løk" though. They´re cheese and onion flavour, and a very popular "staple" snack in Norway :)

Norwegian snacks and chocolates are pretty tasty. However, I prefer the Danish sweets, marcipan and chocolates. And of course the Belgian chocolate is the best and most exquisite in the world.

12:25 - yeah, Reindeer are farmed for eating, and we have a lot of Moose that´s very good eating as well. Whale is not all that common, but sure, some people like that as well. It´s mammal meat, like a steak, but with a weird fishy taste as far as I´m concerned. Whenever you see "Viking" on any package in Norway, well that´s a sure sign that it´s for tourists... That does not include any museums or attractions otherwise.
14:53 - Bamse+mums means something along the lines of Bear yummies. Every kid in this country has gotten sick on these! You just want more and more, until you´ve suddenly had enough that they want out again...

The bird on the chocolate is a Marabou stork. The Swedish sister company is actually called Marabou, but ironically does not have a Marabou stork as a logo on the chocolate.
That chocolate was so delish 🤤 & Oooh that’s cool to know, funny I remember the Marabou brand when we done the Swedish snack video, didn’t know they are a sister company.

Freia was many years before Marabou, so my guess is that Freia already used it, and they did not want to "copy" it. Marabou is also very good.

Marabou was founded by the same man(Johan Throne Holst) who founded Freia.
That whale snack sausage is not very common I think. I've never seen anything like that, and my town was known for whale hunting back in the 60's so it should have been available here, but I think they have a lot in Oslo that we can't get here 1,5 hour south of Oslo. I'm a vegetarian so I won't eat it anyway, but I used to work in a grocery store, so I would have seen it if a lot of people bought it.
The brown cheese, especially that light one, is better on bread or crispy bread. People also eat it on waffles and on Christmas cake (I don't know if that's a special Norwegian cake). Sometimes people would put strawberry or raspberry jam on top or under the brown cheese on the bread slice, but I don't like brunost at all, it's too sticky and sweet for me, and I had a traumatic experience with brown cheese stick to my braces when I was 13-14 and I didn't see it but some other kids did and made fun of it. It's funny now, but back then it was like the worst thing ever and my life was over, for sure 😂.
The Sørlands is not very expensive, actually the other chips with that particular flavour are more expensive, snacks in general are very expensive here, especially chocolate as the prices sky rocketed a few weeks ago because the price on cocoa are high because of the weather ruined the harvest last year and this year too. Hopefully it will go down next year, I miss chocolate 🍫 but it's to expensive for me now with 30 NOK (2,13 £) for a very small chocolate. A big chocolate would be 4.95 £. 😢

I love hearing what your guys think of the snacks etc. Funny a few people have said they have never seen the whale sold like that. We did debate if it was maybe a thing done for tourists as we got it in a very touristy shop. However we did also spot it in the Fish Market ( but again It was on a tourist spot). So it's fascinating to know you have never even seen anything like that.
I've now tried the brown cheese on bread & I can confirm I do indeed love it. We don't seem to have anything similar over here, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. Also oh my goodness I can also imagine back when you were 13-14 & it getting stuck to your braces it would have felt like the worst thing ever then.
Also that's interesting about the crisps, I was convinced they would have been a more expensive brand, the crisps also tasted great, they had a great flavour.
It's sad to hear that the prices are so high at the minute after the bad weather. Hopefully it goes down so you can enjoy all of that yummy chocolate again.

Kvikk Lunsj (quick lunch) is probably the most Norwegian thing there. It's far superior to Kitkat because the chocolate is better as you noticed. Norwegians are proud of that. Norwegians typically have them when they go on their many long walks.
One thing. You missed out on salty liquorice. Very popular in Norway. Not to everyone's taste but I love it.

We actually meant to pick up some liquorice as we kept seeing it everywhere & realised it must be super popular. We don’t have the salty version of it over here 🤭

I could read on the whale snack package that they mixed it with 50% whale, and I guess 50% pigs tongue and protein from pigs, plus some spices and other additives... probably to drive the costs down because pigs are more available and therefore cheaper...

I'll just add extra info that the stork is a Marabou Stork, which ties in with Freia's expansion into Sweden if they test Swedish snacks in the future, and find that the chocolate taste similar. It's cause it's basically Freia's.
The bird on the chocolate looks like a flamingo yes, but its actually a Stork. Also glad you enjoyed my home country ^^

The Smash is actually chocolate covered Bugles. Idk if you know what bugles are but they were more popular back in the day. They still sell them here and there but they not as popular.
They are pretty weird but highly addictive.. Lol

Cool that you liked Norwegian foods 👍 I saw somewhere online that Norway is actually known for really boring food, and im not sure how they came to that conclusion. I guess some of the traditional dishes can be a bit bland (or even distasteful like boiled cod, torskerogn, lungemos, smalahove, and syltelabber) compared to more flavorful foods with a lot of spices, but what kinda weirdo doesnt like fårikål, pinnekjøtt, ribbe, kjøttkaker, pork chops, or "flesk i duppe"? 💀
Haha with all the countries I’ve tried snacks from Norway defo rates high 🤭 I also thought you guys do fish dishes like nowhere else 🤭! You’d be mad no to enjoy all those yummy snacks 🤭🥰

The whale sausage is little bit of a tourist trap, its not very common to eat it as a sausage. Usually its more like a dinner dish with brown sause and potatos. And just to clearify we do not eat any endangered or anything like that in norway, only the common minke whale, which is sustainable under a yearly quota like any other animal we eat
And tbh, there are too many Mink whales in the sea outside Norway - which is a problem for the fish (the eat a lot)

the cheese is not a snack, its usually put on a piece of bread for like breakfast or lunch etc ... got nothing whatsoever to do with "a snack"

got a nice mix of danish and norwegian stuff there (well 1 danish thing) , also brown cheese is not really a snack, Sørlandchips is not really considered posh chips, its just a brand from the south of norway and its b etter than the danish brand kims or hte other norwegian brand maarud

@@littleniks Thanks for asking , It have been worse got Crohns diease since 2003 was stable for many many years , short story since Januari this year i start to get Remicade via IV first it was within tolerance but for like 3months ago it skyrocked up from 357 Faecal calprotectin (FC) to like 2700 even tho i eat nearly the same food ,so now i get medicin often earlier each 8 weeks now its 4weeks.

In whale season you will eat a whale steak.. it is eaten like an regular beef steak. It is really yummy.. It is not eaten often by norwegians.. I am from norway and have not eaten whalefor years. But smash though... You can not have one piece only. 🙂

Same. My father used to get whale-steak for me with cheesecovered potatoes whenever he found whale-steakes for sale at our local supermarket. It wasn't too often though. Some five times a year. It is still my favorite food. I love regular steaks, but they are never as massive. But I have never seen the cured sausage thing before.
