    I’ve lived in Chandler for about six years now after moving from Florida for 22 years. It was weird that everything I threw in the garden grows immediately and becomes a weed. Here, since I lived in an apartment for two years and condo in four, everything I grew on my balcony died by the time June hit. I was so happy December-May, but I got pretty depressed every time my plants, flowers, and vegetables died. (My condo faces the sun.) in the past, I’ve googled and RUclipsd so much about balcony planting in Arizona and haven’t been able to find much. I wasn’t even sure it was possible to get something as lush as what you have. My boyfriend has a pretty decent sized backyard, and I desperately can’t wait to get a nice herb and vegetable garden going. I RUclipsd “Arizona October garden”, and I’m so, so grateful you just uploaded this. Coincidentally 15 hours ago. Thank you so much, and I look forward to watching your channel grow!

    Man, Im in AZ as well and have been hit and miss with my garden for years. I once lost an entire crop of bell peppers to giant caterpillars and a chihuahua. My best success has honestly been onions, radish and turnips every year. Ive been pretty much basing all my decisions off of a UofA planter schedule with maybe a 50/50 success rate. I really enjoy your channel and the knowledge. I hope to apply some tips soon.

I have now automated my garden watering, invested in proper raised beds as well as watering grids. Worth every penny if you’re serious about growing. Good question. They did great. The activity definitely decreased during the summer, but the kitchen scraps still decomposed quickly in the heat. I'm sure the worms burrowed down a bit lower to cool off. Now that the nights are cooling down I'm seeing a lot more worms and worm activity in the bins.

    Great video and info thank you. I have a beautiful fig tree in my back yard I believe it is a Brown Turkey? But last and this summer when the figs look ready to be picked they had a lot of little brown beetles inside and the fruit was spoiled. What are they? Is there any way to prevent them or control them? We love figs but I have been thinking about diging it out and replace it with an apple or dwarf keylime. The birds, japanese beetles and this other small beetles and ants inside them got most of my figs. I'll appreciate your help. Have a great October.

    • @hollysharvest
      @hollysharvest 3 года назад +1

      They're called driedfruit (or sap) beetles. They enter the fruit via the eye (ostiole) at the bottom and lay their eggs inside. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae eat the fig from the inside. Once the larvae are mature, they drop down into the soil where they pupate into adult beetles and the cycle starts over again. The beetles transmit a fungus that causes fruit souring. I had a massive outbreak and was able to control them by cleaning and mulching under the tree (to disturb/kill any beetles overwintering under the tree), promptly removing spoiled fruit (to remove beetles' food source), harvesting frequently (before the larvae have a chance to mature and drop to the soil), and throwing away -- not composting -- any infested fruit (to remove any larvae/beetles from the garden. You can also reduce the problem by planting fig varieties that have smaller ostioles, such as Mission and Tina. I know I'm responding to an old post, but hopefully someone finds this helpful! -- a Master Gardener from So Cal

      Is there any new growth further down on the branch? If there is new growth, cut it back to that. If you don't see any new growth, cut a branch way back to see if it is completely dead. You can also just cut it back to the ground and chances are it will sprout back up unless it's totally dead. They are pretty tough plants.

      Growing In The Garden I think I’ll cut them down and then baby them through the rest of the month. Hopefully they come back

      My yellow bell is definitely dead but my goji berry made it! We planted two new yellow bells just this weekend.

    My large basil plant from Texas died within two weeks of coming home with it. My basil seedlings sprouted but died next day. My basil hopes? Dead 😢😭

      They can get very large depending on the variety. Don't over-fertilize - they don't require a lot of supplemental nitrogen.
