      Are the yearly? updates any hassle ? How fast to they go usually ? If you have the home directory on another partition, do you really need the backup+restore part, instead of just reformat + install + install packages ?

    • @slawomir.777
      @slawomir.777 3 месяца назад

      @@Winnetou17 Updates are very fast, according to Debian schedule. There is a large selection of software (DEB, Flatpak). You can choose newer kernel versions (Debian backports and Liquorix). On Huawei Matebook D16 (2020) laptop, the system occupies 1 GB of RAM with Xfce. The home partition is separated and I don't need a separate part for backup and restore. Once a month I take a snapshot of the system on an external drive. Reinstalling from a snapshot takes 10 minutes while preserving all files and settings. I don't know any other distro with such features. In my opinion, MX is really No.1.

    MX Linux with KDE Plasma is much better than the Xfce version. I am using it right now and I used it before too, the 22 version for 1 year, then jumped for 1 year on tumbleweed then back to MX 23.
    It just works man, super stable, no issues and, of course, I don't do any gaming at all. But if they did not have KDE Plasma, I would be on something else.
    Take for example Opensuse Tumbleweed, it's stable, it's rolling release, but its GUI is ancient-like and hard to understand and use, like why YAST has the same interface for the updates with the one for installation but they have to be accessed differently with different buttons .. why 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂
    Yes it sucks that once every 2 years you have to reinstall the OS, but this is a distro for conservative usages with like-minded people. Btw, I am using it on a i5 PC from 2020.

    when I was looking for a personal-use daily distro for a cheap laptop a couple of years ago I did research and decided on xfce mx-linux. I have no regrets, but it is good to be able to config some things yourself (and now it might even be more user-friendly).
    For users migrating from mac or windows there are choices that are more user/gui-intuitive
    the thing about linux is that every app has it's own config schema/format to learn. To have at least the basic stuff in gui menus makes things much easier and user-friendly.
    Personally I like the look of mx-linux, but I did have the border-resize issue. From what I've heard that's more of a WM/xfce issue than an mx-linux issue though.

    MX Linux does very well in old laptops that have the limitation of 2/4 GB RAM. For example, if I were to give an old PC to a relative, I would install MX Linux. A few years ago my daughter used to do school video lessons with an old laptop from the year 2009 with MX Linux, and it was very stable because it is based on stable Debian, instead before I had Linux Mint and when updating the kernel, it would sometimes crash. Now I don't like MX Linux has too much too much preinstalled software. Now I have several desktop PCs at home in one I use stable Debian (Ryzen 7 5700x) in another mini Itx PC with Ryzen 7 5700G I installed CachyOS and in the 'other PC with Ryzen 5 5600G + GTX 1080 I installed Endevaour OS

The terminal TERRIFIES them and they are convinced they will destroy their laptop if they use it. GUI is the only way for them.
      I suspect using XFCE leads to 20 different apps for configs. I got with KDE where everything is in System settings with a couple of extra - very useful - tools from the MX Team themselves. If one of my non-techie converts whatsapps me with a problem (often "How can I have this feature?") I can literally just type back the setting setting to click on KDE System settings. That's why I give KDE to new users and it has proven a smart choice.
      People are never satisfied, however. With KDE 5, which MX Linux still uses, everyone complained that too many settings were in sight confusing users and leading to fear. So with KDE 6 the KDE team moved many settings into more hidden away locations, out of sight. So now people complain that KDE makes accessing advanced settings hard which is what they 'wanted' before! There is always a trade off!
