On a recent trip to the fish shop, I saw this betta and had to get it. The shop manager said he'd only seen the colours once before and considered them very rare.

can I ask you how did you get your substrate not to turn black? I rinse it several times and finally at a desperation I just took two handfuls and sprinkled a pile on top of my gravel so I could just plant the plants in into my old tanks
Have this 5 gallon tank that most likely I'm just going to have to buy a bag of natural substrate that's not soil just gravel. Then I'm just going to place in some boot tabs and then put the plants in and then fill the tank because I find that aquarium soil is just a pain.
I have 11 betta tanks and when I first started all they had was colored gravel so most of my tanks have a newbius I have tried other plants but they can't survive without aquarium soil or CO2 so I use a lot of Driftwood and a newbius my fish are happy.
It's not the most authentic natural look so that's why I wanted to try and do a 5 gallon with a planted tank but in the end I found that gravel works the best. I'm actually thinking about rinsing the soil I have and then draining again and then just layering it with natural gravel and maybe this will prevent it from turning into a large bucket of tank ofwater

You work is always gorgeous 😍 (If you haven't already) Could you do a takedown tutorial next time you switch up one of your scapes, please? It'd be really helpful to see how you take down glued plants/hardscapes and uproot carpeting plants. 😊

I dont know if anyone's mention it @MD Fish Tanks but typically iwagumi is done with just a few type of plants, mainly carpeting plants, as it is the stones that are suppose to be the main focus.
that being said, i think it looks gorgeous
It is a beautiful tank but I'd call it Iwagumi like or inspired.
It’s probably closer to Brazilian which is similar to iwagumi but utilizes stem plants in the background

He’s a fabulous Mustard Gas Betta. They may wear themselves out flaring at one another, a card that you can slip between the tanks and remove for a daily flare/exercise session would help you get footage of them really showing off.

for anyone that wants to know what "Iwagumi' means.
Iwa is rock or more boulder-like stones.
Gumi is assembly.
Boulder assembly roughly translates to Iwagumi

Iwagumi is japanese one of japanese zen style where rock and sand are the composition, no plants what so ever, you can see it in their temples.
Tank looks really good! Oh yeah, and remember to put a piece of paper or something between the two tanks so that the two bettas aren’t always seeing each other and flaring 👍
trusting they won't flare at each other is not a good policy as well as not having a lid. I have had one of my bettas jump out which he never did ever for months then one day I found him dead outside his tank.
@@heaven7360 Yes. Betta fish can jump up to 3 inches out of the water and do jump. He is taking a big risk here only leaving about 1 inch with no lid.
And he has had bettas jump out and almost die before but still hasn't learned. + as Toby create said no sight block will cause longterm stress.
I feel like this chanel is about aesthetics. Not good fish care. :(
i appreciate you taking the time to explain everything out in your videos, but moreso i appreciate you take the time to list out all of your equipment...makes it so much easier for some of us just getting back into the hobby.
I always do the flat bottom with a couple of plants, but you've inspired me to try different things. Keep up the great work!

This is your best tank yet IMO, the spacing and rock placement is beautiful and red gives it dramatic contrast.
After the first arrangement of rocks I was thinking "Huh, the standards for this style must be really different because that doesn't look right at all to me!" And then it turns out I'd just spotted the teaching moment early :P

When I watch my betta swim vigorously in my 10 gallon then chill for a while in various places it makes me happy. Both high/med/low plants in my tank just melts my heart. A few times we have had some spikes in some parameters but I address or let it settle out and his colors are just glowing. So are the plants. I have done this 3x but from what I have seen don't neglect but don't be so much a mother hen that it also affects the balance for the tanks (specifically with live plants especially difficult ones.

Thank you for going a little more in-depth on your cycling procedure. I've always seen you put fish immediately in and worried about people who thought you could just do that and walk away. Starting out, I definitely didn't understand what was supposed to happen before the water would be safe for fish. It's a wonder my fish lived...

I use the smaller side of the "scraping tool" with my other hand to prevent the plants from coming out after planting with tweezers.

a seven gallon and up is the best way to go for a betta or any fish really
That's a good size for a betta and for you as anything much smaller will be accumulating waste so much more.
Hey mate great videos - probably spend half my nights watching your videos. Can you do a video (for beginners) how to set up a betta tank start to finish - what to look out for i.e. water type, filtration, tank mates etc. i’ve been looking around and people seem to have different opinions but no one seems to do videos start to finish explaining whats needed, why.. would be great if you could

You could put some Pothos in the HOB filter and they love it as well as cover up the filter with nice leaves

Awsome scape, do you think that Hellboy and the new fish will try to go at each other through the glass? Also, have a request for a nano scape with green jade shrip (NEOCARIDINA DAVIDI) I think that they look awesome and also a bit of a challenge to get them to stand out against green plats but knowing you you'll still make it amazing. I just think that they'd be an awesome shrip to a to the shrip collection.
Mustard gas is one of my favourite betta colours.

They're probably one of the easiest fish to keep, and unfortunately that's why they are often kept in really bad conditions.
Oh they're one of the best fish. I have 3 of them. Love them and they all have a personality. Very easy fish to keep
