We don't say that here!"

Half of my teachers were real casual, and the other half, the men, who were all historians, were very formal, so our teachers reminded us to watch what we say to who, specifically bu ke qi for when we had to thank the historians, who used zhengtizi and could switch to guwen whenever they pleased. My one friend in the Japanese department said they were ULTRA strict, everything had to be fully formal, they refused to teach the vernacular.

Hi I'm glad you like the video, and 不(bù) is the fourth tone, it sounds like the second tone when it's in front of the fourth tone, like 不客气/不对/不会 etc, but that's just a variation, it's still pronounced as its original tone (bù) when in front of others like 不好, same as 你好 should still be marked as nǐ hǎo instead of ní hǎo. Hey Jessie. I lived in Xi'an 7 years and would often hear people responding to "thank you" with "没事没事" (The words "没事" being said twice in a row very quickly). Is this common in other parts of China or is it more of a Xi'an thing? If I am not mistaken, I think I also would hear it to use as a reply to a small apology, such as a response to "I'm sorry I am a little late" ... To which the other person would reply ""没事没事". Is this reply to a small apology also fairly common outside of Xi'an?
Heyyy, yeah 没事 could be reply to both “thank you” and "sorry", and repeating things one more time is quite common in a lot of Chinese phrases, like 你好你好(hello hello), 幸会幸会（It's a pleasure to meet you *2), 不行不行（no no), etc. It's common in other Chinese languages as well. Hope this helps:)

Great lesson! but ... 00:55 i often see this - a reflected ring of light in people's pupils. i presume its from lighting and reflections and is not a video effect, right? because if it is a video effect please don't do that, it makes the person look crazy. it's nothing much you can do anything about if its just lighting and reflections. but since it could be a video effect i figured to say.

不客气或不用谢确实是正式用法，在亲友间也会用，比如别人帮了你很大的忙，你特别热烈地感谢对方，那时对方会说不客气或不用谢表达尊重你的感谢的意思

The entire time I spent in China people would answer Bù kè qì when I thanked them. It's all I use now because of that.

Yeah but that's a polite way to turn down people's offers, e.g. - 我开车送你回家吧 (Let me drive you home) - 不用啦，我打车就好了.(Nah, I'll just take a cab)
