Great technique for a big fella. Some player! He always made a genuine attempt to wrap instead of the Luke Cowan Dickie ‘shoulder charge with an outstretched arm’

His technique is brilliant, and super consistent. Watching this video through there's very little deviation in his tackle style. Line them up, get low and lunge.
    Absolutely industrious in defence

Wales has produced some top players over the years! This is one of them. Hope to see them produce more in the near future 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

To think that he broke his neck as a 19 year old which required a bone graft from his hip, and needed to have a helicopter ambulance back to Wales from Perpignan. It would’ve been really easy to have quit rugby for his own health, or to have completely changed his tackle technique.
All the more remarkable that his signature technique was chop tackling.
    Such an underrated player.

Love it when they think they have bumped him off but he is carefully wrapping their legs in knots.

He took “No ankles were safe” to the other side of the spectrum from Kolbe

Now that's the way to tackle properly

Why is the chop tackle not utilized more by professional players and teams? Its not very technical I'd say, it can be natural (this was my main strength without practising it). But I guess since you fully commit with this tackle, you may miss later in the defense line if the ball carrier manages an offload? PS: I reckon offloads are way more technical since you have to adjust your running line to get the tackle on the correct side, handle the tackle, then pass with the good timing

Interesting. I was taught the chop tackle during schoolboy rugby in the '70s. What were were taught was to tackle around the ankles.

G'day lads, First time seeing this lad and his tackling technique. Does he ever get penalised for not rolling away out of the ruck post tackle? Only issue I see with this technique.

Dan should be NZs defence coach once he retires, teach them how to go low 👍

To be fair it isn't the skill most people lack, it's the balls to dive straight at the knees of a 100kg+ man who is running a full speed toward you!

It's about, one, keeping your head out of the way and, two, not letting yourself get "planted" and so lose momentum. Best tacklers today are SAs, including the little uns and Romain N'tamack, especially for the way he deals with hand offs. The rest....dunno, aren't players learned tackling any more?@@schnozz87

Wales produce some of the best players ever but don’t have much to show for it
