70s Priest is amazing. I don’t think people truly realize how groundbreaking they were. They were just operating on another level. Stained Class is one of my 5 favorite albums of all time.

1970s JUDAS PRIEST absolutely RULES! Their 1974-1980 era is one of the best of all time. For me, along with Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, 70s KISS, Led Zeppelin & AC/DC, Judas Priest was the most original and fantastic! Priest in the 80s (esp 1981-1984) was also very good, but following and nowhere near as brilliant. 1970s Judas Priest is simply one of the greatest bands of all time. Marc ⚡ P.s. Martin, "Rapid Fire" and "Steeler" are two of the very best songs from British Steel. Theyre my personal two faves, along with Grinder & Metal Gods. "Rapid Fire" defines metal and that final section of "Steeler" is a monster!

But when my buddy introduced me to their 70s stuff, I remember saying, “ how the Hell have I never heard this stuff before?” I’d go more with their earlier 80s stuff, but I still love their 70s stuff.
As a 14 year old in 79 I never heard of JP until I saw them open for Kiss in Sept of 79. Two days later I used my paper route money to buy Unleashed in the East because I remembered Rob mentioning their new live album. They actually blew kiss off the stage. Kiss sounded like crap, Peter was having one of his bad nights, timing off, and fucking up every song. The rest of the band had zero energy and were just going through the motions with no passion. That following spring I ripped down all my Kiss posters, threw them out my bedroom window and lit them on fire. Then my friends and I used all our Kiss records as frisbees in my backyard after I put my stereo speakers in the window and cranked Ted Nugent`s Double Live Gonzo. Judas Priest was a musical turning in late 79 for me as a kid. Then I turned into a rabid Sabbath fan.
Al Atkins did a more complete version on his album Victim Of Changes. Good stuff. Some old Priest tunes and his own stuff as well. If you haven't already, check it out 🙂
To my ears, some of the Rocka Rolla songs sound like they'd fit nicely on Stained Class as well, they're not that different just heavier and a bigger production.
My first Priest concert was the Hell Bent For Leather/Killing Machine tour and they warmed up for Kiss. The only tours I didn't see from that point was Jugulator and Demolition the Tim Ripper Owens years. I have them and the live as well. But I liked the Fight and Halford albums more and I have TWO voyers as well but don't care much for most of it. Great interview with Martin again Ralph! Cheers...🤘🤘🎸🎸

Stained Class was incredible. But Priest delivered the Good until Turbo.. Turbo was over produced. It did have some good tunes but it was over commercialized.

Personally, Sin After Sin is my favorite. Not really sure why to be honest. But something about it... The future of Priest is laid out on that album. The speed frenzy of Let Us Prey / Call For The Priest, the straight forward rocking style on Starbreaker, The epic power of Sinner. And Here Comes The Tears has one of the most soulful guitars solos ever. Just a total killer album. Of course, that's not discounting the rest of the catalogue, they never really made a bad album, even the Ripper era stuff kicks ass, though to be honest, to me, they don't really feel like Priest, but still worth a listen. Seen them with Ripper a couple times and it was awesome, He really did an incredible job, considering the size of the shoes he had to fill.
My favorite Judas Priest studio album is Sin After Sin but my absolute favorite Judas Priest album is their first live album, Unleashed In The East. I love the sound of it and the energy. No long drum solos or audience singalongs, just a band on fire. As for Hell Bent For Leather, I love all of the second half but only like Delivering The Goods and Hell Bent For Leather on the first side.
Agreed...I bought sin after sin as a new release back in the day. I saw the lp high up on the display wall of new releases, and thought..damn, amazing cover. Something amazing lurks inside, something my last date also said about me, kidding lol! Sin after sin expanded on sad wings of destiny. More , open, free roaming, distorted guitars with a more up tempo, and highlight everything with drums and more thundering drum rolls and cymbals!The songs were less structured, no borders which allowed extra expression from rob and guitarists/drums. The album mix was softer, yet spooky , unique sounding which matched the eeriness of the LP cover which I framed. Its a masterpiece!
Turbo was the first album(cassette) that I ever bought with my own money as a 12 year old-I earned it from sweeping up wool in a sheep shearing shed-after that I got Unleashed in the East. Victim of changes off that album got me into Priest for life🤘
Check out some of the 1978/79 live Priest on You Tube or the 50 HM Year CD box set and you will see just how close Unleashed was to those raw live songs, Halfords voice is just unbelievable!
Just received my Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny cuz I've always only owned Unleashed in the East thinking I didn't need the actual album but wow you know I got to admit Unleashed in the East has a pure excitement but this album is kill her too I love the raw high-pitched screams on this album without any interference a supposed live crowd LOL but they both Rock🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉

Just one thing: I don't think Dave Holland was limited at all (listen to him in Trapeze and on Glenn Hughes' Play me Out...Amazing drumming!), but his drumming with JP was really cut to a very simplistic beat, and frankly so is Ian Hill. Production's choice? One more thing: I don't quite understand why you guys don't give more credit to Live albums in those shows and why you wouldn't be "allowed" to do so in albums ranking and other lists. Cheers.

Heya Ralph - been subbed for years (plus we have some mutual friends), always enjoy your content, but this'd be my 1st comment - and I just had to say how awesome to see you have Martin Popoff on your show. I own and have read many of his books, including the incredible "Judas Priest: Heavy Metal Painkillers" (a must-have for JP fans, IMO). It's interesting, though - he seems to have softened his stance on British Steel, cuz in that book he says it was the beginning of a dumbed-down Judas Priest, and that it "marked a slide in my relationship with the band." Something I mostly agree with, although as a die-hard fan (first saw 'em on the "Hell Bent..." tour and MANY times since), I find value in everything they do - even the Ripper stuff. First six are my faves though! Anyway, great job, I fuckin' LOVED this - keep 'em coming!
I understand Ralphs excitement for priest in the East I have two versions of it there's one that has a few extra songs ....Priest in the East and then there's of course Unleashed in the east by Judas Priest live in Japan they're both the same thing except for the first has extra songs also I agree with Martin Popoff in the sense that hell bent for leather is very underappreciated and kinda passed by a great amount of priest fans ....it is my second favorite album of all time from Priest however.....I was born in 1970 so in 1982 when I was a young 12 year's old who thought I was 18 in my head😂🎉 absolutely loved❤ Screaming for Vengeance and I still do..... it's an opus album, in my opinion, and you can't beat it, but I have to admit...Hell bent for leather is a terrific candidate🎉❤to possibly meet it toe to toe 🎉😂

To me also 70's Priest is the best with Painkiller being the ultimate Priest in every way.That's basically I'm listening to for a long time.I don't like the 80's albums productions at all. I hate Defenders production with synth guitar sound and Turbo and Ram It Down are horrible.Allom basically ruined them with shitty recordings.

I agree. HBFL is my favorite too. Les Binks is criminally underrated as a heavy metal drummer. So happy he was included in the RNR HOF.
