I’ve been an instructor for years and I must say, this artist has an incredible way of teaching. He breaks it down and explains art and technique as well as color in such a passionate yet easy to understand way. We need more instructors like this.
I learn so much from your videos. I can understand what you're teaching us versus just hearing some words. My condolences to you your family. You will be our prayers now and in days to come.
"One last thing and I'll let you go." As far as I'm concerned, you can keep on talking...and I'll listen. Great info. You seem to have a knack for teaching. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for being so generous with your blessings of painting and teaching. It is delightful to hear your enthusiasm as you share such wonderful knowledge!
Dear David, Apologies up front for the long-winded nature of this comment…...lol…..but the prospect of you demonstrating the Richard Schmid’s “Grand Manner” technique for us deserves some “Sit up and pay attention, folks” in my book. Watching your technique in the painting of these Hydrangeas today -- and listening to your step-by-step explanation was, of course, wonderful. I knew “Hydrangeas” would be in my top-five even before I watched the lesson. The softness of the colors is mesmerizing. It is so very ‘cool’ (a special word in my vocab since the 60’s - lol) that you show us exactly how to create those willowy receding flowers in the background. I learn so much as you walk-us-through the palette-mixing methods that result in the colors you’re using. That is all wonderful. However, for me, the ‘wonder’ bumped up another notch (or ten) after I followed your suggestion to look up Richard Schmid (wasn’t sure of the spelling of the surname, but this is the correct one). My Google search produced a result from SOUTHWEST ART MAGAZINE titled “Remembering Richard Schmid.” Lo and behold - what pops up on the page? Schmid’s painting titled “Begonias” (2014). Immediately recognizable are the parallels between your “Hydrangeas” and Schmid’s “Begonias”! I can see the ‘sparks of color’ and the ‘edges’ and ‘textures’ you mention in your lesson. Even that mesmerizing background is similar. I know I’m not alone in appreciating the value of your acumen in the art of teaching. I certainly hope I’ll have many Jansen followers join me in saying “Yes, David, we would VERY MUCH like you to give us a lesson demonstrating Schmid’s ‘Grand Manner’ technique! We would love it!” Just for the record, being with you makes us happy, too, Dave. As always, sending best wishes to you and yours. JV
Hi David! I've watched this class at least 20 times since it was published, and I just watched it again. I can see I'm not alone, huh? 170K views as of today, November 13, 2024. This lesson was my reason for (finally) getting myself one of the 2" fusion flat brushes -- and it's amazing what a wonderful world THAT brush opens up. So...although I've said it dozens of times before....thank you for taking the time to teach us! JV
Hello JV! Thank you for joining us! And you gotta love painting hydrangeas! such a happy flower. You will get so much use from the 2 inch Fusion Flat. We use it with every painting from background to finishing. Glad you are painting with us! 😊
David, I have already watched this video twice completely and am thrilled to see you do hydrangeas. This is one of my favorite flowers. I conservatively say I have watched hundreds of videos and painted a couple. All were the same, the ball with the flowers. Your painting and especially when you put the frame around it, is exquisite. I LOVE IT ❤️I will paint this, after I watch again. I would love to see more. I so enjoy watching you paint, your style of teaching and techniques. Prayers are with you and your family!
Ohhh you definitely are painting like Richard Schmid. What’s amazing David is that you’re doing it with acrylics !!! Bravo 🙌 beautiful alla prima hydrangeas!, Wowee 👏👏🤩🤩 Thanks so much you’re an awesome instructor
Thanks David for all your love of painting techniques. I would love to see the Richard Schmidt's ala prima painting theory. God Bless You and Your Family.
I just fell across this artist and I am totally thrilled with the way David explains and demonstrates what and why he is applying the paint and removing some for highlights. Thank you David~ this is fabulous!
I think I just fell in love with you 😉. I’ve watched many, many hours of pour painting … with the fad of creating cells and lacing before I finally got to you. It was well worth the effort. You make it look so easy when in fact we know it isn’t exactly that easy but your instruction… wondrous to behold. Thank you so very, very much. I can only hope to make something as beautiful as this floral painting. I love the mottling… the suggestion or hint of what’s in the background. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank you enough… but I probably won’t stop trying😉♥️😎💫💫💫 P.S. Grand Manor? Yes Please!!
Edges, edges, edges thanks David, I see what you mean; so simple, what a difference it makes. I really like how you use negative space in you paintings. Thanks David for your video tutorials and informative tips. 🎨🖌
It's not fair that God gave so much talent to one family Have been a fan of you and your Mom for years. You make it look so easy. And your technique and instructions are easy to follow. Thanks for sharing our enormous talent.
As a new painter Imarvelled at David’s techniques and thoroughly enjoyed the hydrangea painting I shall look forward to more and shall definately watch the negative painting tutorials. Thankyou David 👍💐
I am glad that you have done this painting of Hydrangeas, as I have a garden full of them, in many colours. So, come our summer, here in New Zealand 🇳🇿, I will be busy trying to turn out a worthy painting. Thank you for the lesson.
Hello, I just found you today! I couldn’t of been happier than watching you paint hydrangeas. I subscribed so that I can see more of your work. I am an oil painter. Everyone in me in class has moved over to acrylics, and I am now painting a little messier with my oils than the perfection That I personally prefer however your work fits right in to what I like! Thank you for being there this morning for me, and I will see your work again❤
You are simply amazing sir!!. I am a total beginner that started with watercolor to help me with severe PTSD and chronic pain. It has kept me alive, so I am grateful. I have given hydrangeas a go but nothing has helped me like you just did, and for that, I am so grateful!!!. 🙏🏼❤️I send you prayers for my heart.
I love the way you teach! Listening to you is so peaceful and soothing! I learn so much from your projects. Thank you so much for sharing with us. We appreciate you!
I work in oils, but I really enjoyed this lesson and your teaching style. You can sometimes tell pretty quick whether an instructor is going to be "for you" and when I don't feel like they are, I still try to stick with them and give them a chance (since I am pretty imperfect and fallible and am often wrong lol), but with you I instantly connected. I think I even said out loud in my empty apartment "Oh I LIKE you." And that didn't change. I painted my own floral in oils while I listened to you for inspiration and motivation and company, and I feel really good about the results so far. I'm actually redoing a painting that I'd completed months ago that got lost in the mail when I sent it out. Sad, but this new one is going to be better I think (hope!) Anyway, thank you for this and I'll be following!
Your gentle touch and manner are so nice. I feel so fortunate that I found you and a couple of other great artists and teachers from whom I can learn! I love ❤ hydrangeas.
So, so beautiful! I really like seeing your reference photo, palette and painting at the same time and your explanation of what you are doing and why. Excellent tutorial! Exactly the way I want to paint. Thank you! ❤ SayessDesign
This was great! I'm 79 yo now and seem too shakey for detail and I've been working in colored pencil. Think if learn acrylics, I may be able to continue on with my art. You are a really good teacher, so glad I found you! So enjoyed❤
What an amazing artist (and instructor!!!) you are! Your explanations of how and why you do certain things engages the viewer and makes us believe we can, indeed, learn to paint! Thank you!
The most beautiful gorgeous hydrangeas I had ever seen in any painting..would love to see you doing some dahlias as well..i am sure that would also come out this pretty...love your compositions and your style ..
