Mk1 Escort Project Possibly Scrapped / Financially Written Off Ep5. Welding bodywork fail

  • Hi all, this will be the last update for a while for the Escort due to what I can only describe as a "shoddy peice of work" by a previous owner/supposed welder.
    I am unsure of the history but when I bought it years ago I didn't realise that it was full of the dreaded filler, it was pure ignorance on my behalf as I wanted this car and let my heart rule my head, lesson learnt.
    So this is on the back-burner after having it blasted and revealing the horror.
    Maybe it will be sold as a parts/grass track car, possibly scrapped! Or just kept to remind me of the need to do my research beforehand and take a panel beater with me next time.
    Please rate the panel work for me and spare no prisoners, just don't get banned. :)
    Anyway, take care all and have a merry Xmas and a cracking new year.
    *Just to clarify, the work I said that I have had done was the shotblasting, not the welding.

    Hi bit of a night mate as they say . What about turning it into some kind of art project for display . Look around on you tube plenty have done it with the shell of a classic . That’s if your keen . I’m sure some money could be made out of it . Such things that are made are lounges , barbecues . Office desks and such man cave items . I’m watching Yorkshire
    car restoration at the moment , featuring a mk 2 . Getting plenty of panels thrown at this one . Good luck for the Fourier

    If you wanted to take it down the modified route It's actually pretty decent, lots were held together with chicken wire, rivets, and newspaper mache. Teach yourself to weld, You'll be a pro when its finished!

      Hi Adey, that was my thought after seeing it, only good for track day etc, it would be a world away from what I wanted to build so will have to think this one out.
      True about the welding mate, after doing all that I'd definitely be on the way 👍

      I could not afford to buy those panels either, since all the valuetop panels have been sold out the cost of mk1 replacement panels have rocketed amongst all the remanufacture,s so repair by cut and mend and patch eill be my way about this, also because I have a few mk1s to rebuild now that I'm retiring, I will save by just making up my own jigs for making new panels, but it's a great video lad.

  • @hoggmotorsport
    @hoggmotorsport Год назад +1

    Its certainly had a hard life!! I would either find a good LHD shell and use your cuts for the conversion .... Or slightly more ambitious find a good 4 door shell and again use cuts from yours for a 2 door conversion.
    As another comment the welding its had and the accident repairs are shocking 🤯 but that's how it was done for mot repairs back in its day. Good luck with it dude 👍

    Absolutely gutted for you mate! I’ve only just found your channel but I’m truly gutted for you! On a positive note though, any 2 door mk1 shell is now well worth saving! It all depends on your financial status and whether you intend to keep the finished car or if it’s purely a cash generator that will be sold when finished mate. Personally, if it were me and I was going to keep the car, I would do the necessary work and have an ‘as new’ escort at the end that you know has been done correctly, not bodged and is not hiding any nasty stuff. Good luck whatever you decide to do. Regards. Mark

      Hi Mark thanks for taking the time to take a look how did you find it? The car is pretty bad isn't it mate, shame as I wanted to keep it for a long time after the build and enjoy it. I'm still undecided as what to do but it's going nowhere yet, just on its side on the rotisserie and hope it doesn't snap 🤣

    • @markmorgan8533
      @markmorgan8533 Год назад +1

      I know it looks bad mate but trust me I’ve seen a LOT worse! Try not to look upon as one massive build, more a series of smaller builds, and I’m sure you’ll be fine mate. Take your time but be sure to walk away when you get frustrated then return another day with a fresh positive attitude mate. Could I ask where about you are? I may be able to come and lend a hand if/when you needed. Stay positive and stay safe mate. Regards. Mark

    If I had the room I'd buy it off you, please dont scrap it,.sell it on, there are people about who can fix as you know, when they were 10 a penny cars, it didnt matter but now! The shell looks like it's had a M.O.T patch up and keep on the road that'll do job, as many cars were done like that, way b4 financed cars were available to the masses! Also I suppose it doesn't help, sameone got a cheap welder and suddenly became an expert...the roof is quite an exception, never have I seen one like that, I feel for you m8, and I'm sure something will come good out of it, sometimes you have to cut the old out to make new...👍

    That is the worst shell I've ever seen! Every panel has been sabotaged, it would be far better if they hadnt done any welding on it because you have to cut more out to do it right and theyve warped the back arches.

  • @ColinBarrett001
    @ColinBarrett001 Год назад

    You've got to be able to do it yourself, because if you're relying on paying for somone else's labour, time and expertise it will not be cost effective.
    So learn to weld and (just as importantly) learn how to effectively remove rusted sections and fabricate and weld in new replacement metal - not just weld over rust! There are hundreds of RUclips videos out there to learn from.
    Most importantly you must have enthusiasm for the work. If you don't want to do the work you won't do it. Too many people buy projects without knowing what they're doing and end up abandoning it. This is why ebay is so littered with failed projects.

    The dangers of buying a restored classic. Paintwork stunning but hides a patchwork quilt of poor welding leaving the car structurally unsafe. Not a good business to be in.

      I didn’t see your older videos and just stumbled upon this one - think it was shared on Facebook. I thought you’d bought it as a decent shell and then discovered all this crap underneath the filler and under seal etc .
      She’s in a poor state alright . :( only financially saveable if you do it yourself. To pay someone to panel that up would be astronomical. 400 hours just to get it to paint shop stage. At least !
      Plenty of information online if you decide to restore it yourself
      Good luck

    Every single panel is shot. The worst welding I've seen in 30 years in the business. Buy a new shell from MST, it will be better than a new original ford shell. Mig welding isn't the best technique for car body panels, a spot welder is the only 100% OEM way to fit wings, sills quarters etc.
