Your herd is excellent looking coming out of winter. Your criteria of what you use as your breeding animals is really showing the results.
I have watched your posts for several years now and your animals just get better by the year. You are on top of problems before they become epidemic. Your foundation bulls have been selected with care for breeding compatibility.

Your mini dachsie pup is my favorite breed. Have had five of them and they are true characters. Have seen a few videos of cattle ranchers using them to herd cattle. A huge hilarious thing to watch.

My first thought was a bull might have tried things with her. And if she is maturing early that would have attracted the bull too.
I did that with a moose hide many years age- sent it to a tanner in
California - ended up as a winter spread for a king size bed - hung to floor all the way around - it was bug - and HEAVY.
I once had a ewe lamb that had that issue. Her brother got a bit too rambunctious when they were playing and butted her into a fence. The vet found nothing wrong with her and a week later she was fine.

My first thought about the injured heifer was that she was approaching sexual maturation and a bull was attuned to those pheromones. It would be interesting to consult your list of heifers to see the date you documented her birth.

I have watched you on and off for 3 years and I still can't tell these bison apart
You start noticing the head shape, the horns, the humps on the boys, and especially the ear tags. Dusty once explained the info of the tags when they were putting them all through the squeeze chute for weighing and shots.

She has a white discharge and I think you should give her a shot of antibiotics... I know if dogs get an infection they can get pyometra and can die if not treated and have to be spayed... Don't know what it may be called in buffaloes. . But I would definitely go to the safest option possible

The heifer could have miscarried, I know she technically isn't old enough to be bred, but that's why should could have miscarried. Either way, some good looking stock, nice job on the hide, cute pup & love seeing the bison run. 👍

Is the little heifer you were concerned about old enough to be a mother? I would wonder if she will stay this size or will she do more growing even if she does have a pregnancy? I think these would be too good for the dark. Sure enjoy the next steps on the tanning of your Hyde. The young couple in Alaska that shot their first Caribou is tanning a caribou hide, but currently are only at the skin off the carcass stage roll it up and put it in the freezer. They like you have a long way to go. I don't know if they're doing it the same way you are, but would be nice to watch both of you. By the way, their channel is "simple living Alaska"

Instead of running they look like they are jumping
Salt can dry out a hide right through the leather to the hair causing fall out. Brain tan is best method used for thousands of years. Nice wet application and supple hide. Buffalo hides are invaluable.
And at the end ol' Hoss with his roll toy. I always enjoyed watching our bovine wannabe alpha bulls, as long as something was between them and me.

Do you ever use one of those laser temperature devices to get a temperature reading on a bison? Could that work to detect an animal with an infection? Thanks for going to the bother to corral her for a better look! Those animals are lucky to have you and Marissa!

Watching the herd follow you,, was struck with the way the herd has increased since you first began. Their coats all look so “plush” and thick and clean and bright in the sunlight. it is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago, the Ponderosa was frozen in the grip of winter. Where did all the ice and snow go? it sure looks like Spring has arrived. Good news that the little heifer is going to be ok. ❤

I’ve said this before, but when you get the herd to start chasing you I try to imagine what the sounds must have been like when they numbered in the hundreds of thousands. That must have been an awe inspiring experience. Keep up the good work you two.
