It's always the military guys who say "Ah I was just some non-combat role" who have the most interesting stories. Just an interesting pattern I've heard listening to similar stories.
I was in an ARMY EOD UNIT deployed( 32 million of equipment my job was supply) and was in Afghanistan 2011-12. And I saw a ton of combat and I have so many stories
For the last story I'm surprised they didn't turn it into an opportunity. "It may have been a typo on our part but your network should not be able to be completely brought down by one interface flooding everything" or something.
Even before evilmog walked through the impact he had on that soldier, I said out loud as I sit here alone, he saved that man's life. There is no doubt in my mind about that. There's a reason the statistics is 22 a day. It's an unfortunate reality and all to many vets feel like a burden to their families. As a vet myself, if you're having a hard time reach out. Our families need us. It took a lot of therapy and help to flip that switch in my head from feeling like a burden to realizing that I may need to move heaven and earth for my family one day, and I'm gonna do everything I can to be there in that moment. Thanks for sharing this story Jack. Too many people in the military do amazing things that have an impact that changes lives. Because of that man, a woman has a husband, a child has a father, a mother has a son, and most importantly a life has a purpose. Be kind to each other.
I've said before that I'm from the UK and we don't have the same late-night talk-radio as I assume some parts of America has. I'm just guessing from pop culture. Even though when these videos come out for me during the daytime, that's the vibe I get. That voice keeping you company and guiding you home. A lot of your stories are varied, fun and fascinating but some of the Penetration Tests have been the best ones.
That scam is the first story, he ripped off the bank the bonds and the land and then threaten the bank to ruin their reputation unless they paid him to not talk? That is just insane! I freaking love it!
Jack, I want to hear more stories like that one about the junior pentester that made that mistake that almost got him and probably his 'mentor' fired. Why? Mistakes are made, and I would be really, really surprised that there weren't many of those stories that people don't tell for obvious reasons. My point: Production and real life are different from training labs. I've been itching to get my first job in Cybersecurity but also get so nervous when I think about what can happen because of the actions I take. I'm not a cyber security expert but have a good number of years in IT in various capacities and oh yes, $hit will happen and how you handle them is what will make the difference. Great episode btw.
Thanks for the vid jack! I love when you go deeper into the methods and software these tech specialists use and soemtimes glaze over. For ppl like me who don’t have that deeper understanding, I love learning the deeper details of these methods/tools!
last story is a good tale of caution, a whole chain of misapplied trust from bank to senior to junior to some program, everyone taking it on faith the next thing in line will do the right thing.
45:00 Communication... A huge technician tool. "Machine don't work good" is the usual user feedback, and a good troubleshooter knows how to ask questions that elicit useful answers.
I spent time at KAF and Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar between 2010 and 2011. I knew he knew what he was talking about when he mentioned the poo pond. As someone who’s experienced a few IEDs up close and personal, I really appreciate what he did for that guy.
I saw you at the DefCon Jeopardy game :D :D you're so cool! I thought I'd do great in the category but the only answer I could remember was Dolphin haha When you interviewed EvilMog there, were you hiding behind a shower curtain?? hahaha
As a retired Marine, non coms, there’s a lot of parallel with my Afghan journey. River city is what we called the comms lockout. And the crappy British voice would announce it, so we all knew what was up
I am wondering, why do you only put up about a thirds of your episodes on podcast apps? I find this especially confusing since you have adds on the podcast, but not on YT, seems like it should be the other way around?
Catched around 6k API hackers at once with my mind would love to join the podcast. Was a funny ride about to receive my NSA stuff and would try to get you a good phone if I am allowed to join. Old viewer btw thanks for letting me join :D
8:30 his Canadian completely came out when he said suurrrrry and a boot. Holy crap this guy is Canadian as Canadian can be Canadian What is a Canadian juvy prison? Is that just a house with a sign saying please Don't run away? Lol and then if you do escape do the guards say sorry to you for arresting you? Lol
stories like these only make me think about the poor innocent victims of guys like that. Our soldier gets maimed or killed. Their civilians get the same. Then I think that the blame of that soldier isnt even half of those politicians and corporations that send our soldiers to go get killed murdering their civilians. And all we have to say for it are platitudes like 'thank u for ur service'. The shame of even comparing the 'service' of our soldiers fighting the nazis with the 'soldiers' murdering civies overseas only for the color of their skin in a forever war that sinks trillions of our taxdollars instead of paying our citizens more and building our infrastructure, etc.
Good old IRC-times, when most have only dial-up and with couple of friends could easily ping someone out and take over nick/channel, just for shit and giggles.. No such thing as DDoS back then, or atleast never heard of it.
It's always the military guys who say "Ah I was just some non-combat role" who have the most interesting stories. Just an interesting pattern I've heard listening to similar stories.
" Non combat? Wished they told the enemy that... " - typical army logistics saying.
Makes sense considering we don't engage in any sort of real combat outside of a small team here and there.
I was in an ARMY EOD UNIT deployed( 32 million of equipment my job was supply) and was in Afghanistan 2011-12. And I saw a ton of combat and I have so many stories
Only found your show recently and ive listened to all of them multiple times now. Unbelievably good top tier stories!!!
Always excited for a new darknet diaries video! Thanks you Jack! Keep being awesome!
I think I was deployed during the same time period as this guy. Glad you made it home brother!

Both stories had me glued to the speaker, thank you!
Great work as always. Thanks for feeding the dynamics.
Yeah. That story made ME cry too, and I had to share it with MY friends, too.
That scam is the first story, he ripped off the bank the bonds and the land and then threaten the bank to ruin their reputation unless they paid him to not talk? That is just insane! I freaking love it!
I hope one day we get a story where a pentester gains access to a user account and it's an actual insider threat XD

At the end of the day mistakes happen, don't be nervous if something goes wrong. You won't be liable.
@@byrospyro4432 that's nice. But hopefully won't happen.
Jack!! i hope youre doing great boss! your videos are seriously amazing. Im gonna share them to x so more people can find this gem of an account.

So, what happened in prison with Capone?
I am wondering, why do you only put up about a thirds of your episodes on podcast apps?
I find this especially confusing since you have adds on the podcast, but not on YT, seems like it should be the other way around?

Hello Mr. Rhysider. Let's hack into something today!
Viktor Lustig literally called himself "funny"... that's what his assumed surname means in German.
New NSA chef here, I'd love to talk 😊
Catched around 6k API hackers at once with my mind would love to join the podcast. Was a funny ride about to receive my NSA stuff and would try to get you a good phone if I am allowed to join. Old viewer btw thanks for letting me join :D
I can't believe General Timothy D. Haugh, USAF posts roof climbing videos in German, amazing
