In college in 1989, I did a master class with him. He hasn't lost an iota of the fire and technique that make him, in my opinion, the greatest classical guitarist of all time.
This music brings peace in mind, like wandering in the middle of silent night. Superbly played. Mr Russel stands equally with John Williams and Julian Bream
No no, listen to viazovskiy, clearer and more imagination. If you want to listen to my playing, well it is difficult to say that I always outbested almost anyone I watched.
Difficult to point out better playing if your eyes are clouded by big names. I know some secret of some big names, and most of them don't play really good.
@@stephenlee9512 bro I play jazz guitar. He played it well enough that it sounded good to me. Yeah I’ve seen his name a couple times from the classical stuff I’ve played and listened to but it means nothing to me because I don’t love in the classical world. I’m sure there are better classical players out there but I think he did the piece justice and see no reason to knock it.
@SB Tofu I'm sure for some this is easy, but certainly not for me, and my original comment was try to be ironic, hence the 😊 Anyway, all the best in learning this piece, its really nice
David Russell is Scottish by family, but he was raised in Spain. That is why he plays the guitar with Spanish rhythm and musicality that most British players do not have.
What brilliant technique! He appears to be sight-reading this - possibly more as an aide-memoire than fully reading from scratch but even so it is very impressive. This is complex music and the guitarist does a great job of extracting musical sense from it in terms of speed, emphasis and musical rhetoric. One of the very best guitarists ever to pluck a string.
Nicholas Rees In my opinion he isn't sight reading he is looking for interpretations like dynamics, articulations and other details because if u observe his left hand its completely muscle memory a well practiced fingers on boards but his eyes are looking for cues!!
@@the7thfalsestart He will know the piece well but for some players having the score there is like a security blanket, you don't worry about losing your place or having a thought block and you can be even more expressive. It doesn't work for me as I tend to not listen to the music and focus on the score, Mr. Russell obviously doesn't have that problem!
Almost without exception, for every great performance, for every great composition, there are always a few idiots to cast a Thumbs Down, simply because they can...

Haha, perhaps not quite so great as having practised a huge amount all the while. Sensational playing. I keep returning to hear this. Thriling and uplifting in equal measure.
to Manuel Salgado ... Check his Sonata, or Jobiniana 3....hardly A. York style... I believe that mood of this is cause of background of this composition ;)
some parts of this work are interesting - some too my taste a little too brillant to be enjoyable - like Gould - when he gets crazy about speed - a great work of memory too !

One of the greatest guitarists ever.
When I start thinking I'm starting to get really good .Videos like this knock me back to reality and I realize how much better I can become.
That's good! Humility and practice are wonderful things ...btw: me too. Ha!
I wasted 20 years of my life playing guitar because no one told me I was just not gifted.
@@virtualpilgrim8645 No such thing as being gifted. Please don't quit. As long as you do it out of love for music.

Saw him when he came to Gatineau, Quebec, he played almost an extra concert’s length of music in encores.
I'm really addicted to this piece...

such fluid flowing lyrical playing... a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you Sir David. ;)
Reading it out of the book! Unbelievable. Also really cool hearing Sergio Assad write in a tonal harmony style like this.
La música que desprende de su guitarra es fenomenal. Agrada muchísimo.
