  • Director Jean-Marc Vallée, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, and others look at Matthew McConaughey’s award-winning transformation in this DALLAS BUYERS CLUB featurette.
Matthew McConaughey stars in Jean-Marc Vallée’s DALLAS BUYERS CLUB as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose freewheeling ways are cut short in 1985 when he is diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. Shunned by many of his old friends and unable to access possible life-saving treatments, Woodroof takes matters into his own hands and starts a “buyers club” with a HIV+ transsexual Rayon (Jared Leto). Rejecting the advice of his physician, Dr .Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner), Woodroof tracks down alternative treatments from all over the world, thus prolonging his life, and the life of others around him. Also starring Denis O’Hare, Steve Zahn, Dallas Roberts, and Griffen Dunne.

Complete and absolute respect for matthew.....its not just the weight loss at all, weight loss has been done by many actors now and its almost like if you transform your body physically then you're bound to get an oscar which is NOT the case for matthew at all, his acting is the one that impressed and it went along so darn well with the weight loss, you look into his eyes and you see that he's doing this for himself, not acting just for the sake of acting....he is brilliant

With a blurred out gun, because the visual image of a gun is too violent, someone talking about shooting someones dick off thus making a vagina - perfectly fine hahah oh america

Matthew has such a heartbreaking way of talking sometimes. Interstellar was the movie that hit me hardest with him. Most of the stuff he says is just poetic because of how he says it.

LADYOF LYN All respects to you if you're a member of the trans community... My apologies if you auditioned but were denied a roll: but honestly, shut the fuck up. Both Matthew and Jared fully committed themselves to each of their characters, and it wasn't just about losing 30 pounds. For myself, this movie completely moved me and I was determined to find out everything I could about it including the very many interviews conducted by not only the cast and crew, but also the real Ron Woodruff. This was a very low budget film. It took them over 20 years to get this story approved by a producer, and when it was finally given the greenlight, they were only given 25 days to shoot. You can't say that within that small amount of time that either actor didn't give their all for this story to unfold. Matthew Mcconaughey spent hours listening to recordings of the real Ron, and meeting with the family to make sure he was depicting the character correctly. If he hadn't, you would have heard of a lawsuit by now, and no one would have won any awards for their participation in the film. Also, Jared Leto has stated in numerous interviews that when he first moved to LA, as an aspiring actor and a not very well known musician, he rented a room out of a three bedroom apartment in which one of the men living there was sick with AIDS. He said that he witnessed the downfall of this man, in not only his body size, but also the decrease of his overall health, and of course his mental and emotional stability. He said that the decline of this man left an everlasting impression and overwhelming effect on his life.
The character that Jared Leto performs may have been fictional, but there is no way that you can say that his attitude and performance wasn't genuine throughout the entire film. I felt the emotion in every bone of my body, from every character, while I watched that film.
My cousin is ill with the disease from a combination of his unprotected homosexual lifestyle, and his intravenous drug use of speed. I myself struggle with a drug abuse of opiates, mainly oxy and heroin. But I can connect with my cousin in ways that only a few others in our family and friends, who are all dead now, could have understood. Nobody gets us, everyone just judges us and sees us as a burden. I think this movie was wonderful, and I hope to see both Matthew Mcconaughey and Jared Leto cast together in such beautifully, inspiring roles again.
