Hey there! In this video I am picking the first big bunch of collards for the season. In recent years I have planted my collards as transplants in April and they grow in the garden through the end of the year. Collards are by far one of my favorite vegetables to grow (and harvest) from the garden! If they are your favorites or if you are interested in seeing other videos on collards over the years, check out this COLLARD GREENS PLAYLIST: ➡️ • Collard Greens

You have convinced me! Next year there will be a full bed of covered greens. They are perfect!!
I know huh? She always has the best greens!
Kris - my job here is done 😊💚😊💚thanks Sis!
Your collards are beautiful!!
Thank you!💚
I ❤❤❤ how your collards look!!!
Thanks Sis!❤️
Beautiful harvest
Thank you!💚
Your greens look incredible. What I did last year was when I pulled my greens, the ones I wasn’t going to use I planted them in my roses that fall and all I saw was fat and happy earthworms. They had broken down the greens and left their castings. My roses thrived off of the extra nutrients. I grow completely organically. Just an idea to put the greens you’re not going to eat to great use
Heya Natural Beauty! I just took a screenshot of your comment, I need to figure out where I want to do that at in my garden. Thanks so much for the tip!💚
Before you plant your next crop, amend your soil with your fertilizers and place the greens in the soil then plant or start your seeds. Your soil is going to become alive with earthworms and your plants will thrive. You’re doing a great job already but just an idea of how to use your entire crop instead of disposing of food the earth will benefit from.
Thanks for the tips!
Great harvest.
Thank you!
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
Love collards ,turnips and mustard greens.Your garden looks really good 👍
Thanks Wilma! My neighbor and I were just talking about turnips (she loves the greens and I love the bottoms (I enjoy the greens too 😊). It's just about time for me to get some planted for Fall.

Hey Sis! 💚
@@BBettaGarden Heyyy!!!!
Your greens are truly lovely.
Thank you🙏🏼 for sharing this with us.
My pleasure 😊
They look great! Mine are full of holes. At least someone is getting fed!
Well, the garden pests appreciate your garden efforts
I'm in Chicago, I wanna shop from your garden! 🥰
Hey Chicago neighbor!! 💚
This fall I hope to be smiling like you. How many collards do you have and do you get extra plants for backups for when they bolt earlier than you want or are you so collard rich it doesn’t matter. If you ever feel like posting recipes I am definitely watching and taking notes.
Thanks for sharing!
I'm rooting for you! I think I've only every had two plants bolt one last year and one this year) during the season (next spring if I leave them in over winter, yes). But I still over plant. I have quiet figured out the magic number for me. But I'll tell you this.. COLLARD RICH is my new favorite description! 😊💚
Ms. B. You grow the most beautiful brassicas. Do you blanch, then freeze, or just freeze?
Thanks in advance.
As always, thanks for sharing!😊
Heya Ms. Elwandaa! I cook them up like normal and then freeze them in mason jars and fresh them (greens, meat, pot locker and all😊). I finally got to pressure canning a batch this month. I'm going to do a taste test on them and that might be my go too. I tried balancing and freezing once but they really weren't enough for a pot of greens, but the color held and they cooked up nice.
Great harvest and great plants. Plan on planting out some collards, mustard, spinach and kale. I am in one 7a. So have raised beds and containers/grow bags. Due to placement I can start some cool weather crops in my back yard while keeping some summer crops going. I be cleaning freezer or using item and preserving some harvest. Take care
Being able to grow in two seasons is so cool! I feel like I'm behind on my Fall things but I always feel that way😊. Oh, how do you like the grow bags. I've been growing in them for about 5 years and I still haven't made up my mind 😂.
@@BBettaGarden Love grow bags . So versatile and so many sizes and choices. They are compliment for garden. Even though they may dry out fast there are some ways or methods get around that. Happy gardening be safe.
Thanks! This is one of the more successful years for me with growbags😊
Love that shirt! Let us know if they're available
Believe it or not, this is a Walmart special 😊
Those look fantastic!! 🌱💚That's what you have to resort to (the covering) if you want a bountiful harvest like you have or the cabbage butterflies will make a quick meal out of all of them. Just about everything I'm growing is under netting and even then, I've found they've some how managed to get under the covers!! 😠😒
The covering is such a pain but it's so worth it. A couple of beds in the front yard have like bird netting on them and I spent probably 10 minutes trying to unweave the sweat potato vines out of the holes (probably not the best to grow them under this type of netting), but its still worth not gave to worry about animals crawling in their to nap or worse yet, dig 😊:
Ur greens look so healthy and big. I have done collard greens but they don't get that big and doesn't yield a lot. I live in Texas so I thought they like the heat. What am I doing wrong?
Heya Emily! I didn't always know this but collards are cool weather crops, they prefer cooler temps. Here in Chicago a really hot day is in the 90's and that happens a handful of times a month in the summer. I bring that up to say, based on our 'mild' summers, I've been able to grow collards, all Spring, Summer and Fall. For you in Texas, I would recommend growing collards in the Spring (probably Fall and maybe even winter if it stays above 20 degrees. Alot of gardeners in Texas are done with Collards once May or June rolls around as it's too hot for the plants to sustain themselves.
Check out the planting section ( aggie-horticulture.tame.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2011/03/E-506_collard_greens.pdf).
I hope this is helpful.💚
Those greens are beautiful! Have you ever been bothered by aphids? They are my nemesis. I’ve covered my plants and they still showed up! Any advice? Right now I’m treating the collards with the water and neem oil mixture. Seems to help, it’s just so irritating.
Thank you!!! I go to battle with aphids every summer (late summer through the Fall) on my greens even under cover. I use the hose to spray them off but that's like daily and I'm not sure how much it helps in the long run. I was going to suggest a soap/water spray and if that didn't help, neem oil which you're doing. p.s. I know your pain....I was planning to pull my kale out this year when summer hit because that's when they get bad on the kale..so far, things are okay but I'm on the watch.
What do you use for fertilizer? Your greens look amazing!!
Thanks!! This year I used either Jobes Organic all purpose granular fertilizer OR PlantTone Organics all purpose plant food when I planted them at the end of April. I also added Moo-Nure to the beds before planting. P.S. i also use Neptunes Harvest, fish/seaweed fertilizer but didn't use that yet on these beds. ~ Batavia
How often do you water your greens??
Heya! For the once's growing in raised beds, in the Spring, maybe once every two weeks. In the Summer, if it's also raining "normally" maybe once a week. We haven't had any measurable rain in a while here in Chicago and I watered them last week when we had temps in the upper 90's, and I'll check them this weekend to see if they need to be watered. During the Fall, it's back to my Spring schedule, and maybe every two weeks. I hope this helps!😊
Hi Batavia Brenda from Michigan. What's your secret for keeping bugs away from your collards greens. My collards was eaten by some type of bugs. I noticed wood chips in your garden does that helps to keep bugs away? Bye the way I do keep them under a hoop house.
Heya Brenda! I wish I knew the secret because I would bottle it and give it away to gardeners! Each time I go under the covers, I am so nervous about the cabbage moth getting to my plants. I have been able to keep things under control with the cabbage worm since the outbreak this spring. I have had some minor damage from Japanese beetles and maybe June bugs and grasshoppers that get underneath the covers. The collards that were in the grow bags this Spring haven't had cover on them in about 6 weeks and they are ravaged with holes. I kinda let them go as sacrificial plants. I'm not sure if that helps helped the plants under cover..
@@BBettaGarden Thanks Betta
What kind of fertilizer and soil do you use
Heya! This year I used either Jobes Organic all purpose granular fertilizer OR PlantTone Organics all purpose plant food. I also added Moo-Nure to the beds I'm growing the greens in. I haven't added soil to these beds in a couple of years but I am a fan of Kellogg Garden Organics All Natural Garden Soil. ~ Batavia
Thanks
Ooo! Can I have some?😊 I didn't have as much as you, but I really enjoyed my collards and kale varieties from past Autumn they lasted till 2 months ago. Everything bolted, and I was fighting aphids. So I pulled them out. Ready to start over. But those look amazing!!🥬🥬🥬💚💚
Once something does well for me, I tend to ahem..over plant. But this year; it may work out where I have collard all throughout the winter and spring stored away to enjoy. The aphids are on their way to my garden, they normally start to become trouble for me in August/September.
You're right on time for an autumn planting. And what's the saying, the greens are sweeter once some cold hits them 😊.
Beautiful harvest
Thank you Wendy! 💚
