    Decent rewiew with fair points , couple of things to add form anyone reading.
    1.Routing the headphones out and instrument in through an attenuator and using negative values gives you the infamous minimoog feedback trick, and trust me, sounds like a new synth.
    2. you can have an extra oscillator sacrificing the main lfo ( you can do this even with the other lfo but is less precise and has less waveforms ) routing it on the keytrack on the back and finding the in tune sweetspot
    3. global settings is a pain in the ass but there's a web editor
    5.a simple chorus pedal routed before the stereo path ( before the filter ) really makes this synth souding like a lush polyphonic ( i have a prophet 6 trust me )
    And finally , is definitely not for everyone, but you can get both vintage and modern sounds and some outhere space sounds. Can be absolutely gnarly and aggressive but the best adjective for this synth , when used in parallel with the delay , is ethereal.
    Personally i love it, but i can see the disappointment of certain users.
    If you're looking for a true poliphonic synth is definitely not the one, also is you're a modular head might disappoint you, but like many moog, it has its own sound that you can't find in other synths

      Good summary of the Matriarch. For the couple weeks I have used it I would consider it the strangest but most rewarding design i've played. There are countless times i have either been totally confused, sure something was broken or in error, or frustrated that expected things weren't happening. I would say all of those individual issues resolve themselves for me in time and with understanding how this thing behaves. The payoff is that you can wander into unexpected areas where things can suddenly just *bloom.

    I have had one for about a year now and my thoughts are: Its an amazing tool, and I say its the next generation of synth in the minimoog line (minimoog, voyager, and now GMA/Matriarch), its unfortunate its gotten this "experimental" / "hipster" name because it can do a lot of very useful tones and is very genre agnostic. Personally I use it to get sounds that are more in line with sounds from producers like deadmau5, its perfect for getting those raw waveform sounds without having to do any kind of post processing to make it sound good and its a synth I will literally never sell
    Im surprised when people say the matriarch is too overwhelming or the lack of patch memory is scary or whatever. Look at as a minimoog with optional patch points, lay off the cables and suddenly you got yourself a very capable monosynth thats 95% sweetspot

    Imo it’s an instrument in a similar vein of a system 55 or buchla music easel. If like to jam, play around with sound design, and/or enjoy working in a way that makes you commit to audio - the matriarch is for you. It sounds amazing and is not just “the moog sound”. It might be the one hardware synth I’d keep no matter what. Everything else I own can be reproduced in software. Not what the matriarch can do.

    Hipster synth - a synthesizer that is compact made for use ideal for coffee house gigs. Can be transported in a padded gig bag, then slung over the shoulder… that way transport to and from coffee house gigs can allow for more focus on the 1920s style bicycle ride , with the large wheel in the front, and small one in the back, to and from the gig making it safer.
    Hipster synth (definition 2) - a synthesizer that goes to great lengths to be “different”, often putting out sounds that are of the non-mainstream. Over the long run, more and more users begin to use the hipster synth and the non-mainstream hipster sounds; thus causing increasing popularity making it go from “non-mainstream and different”… to “trendy and “all-too-common”

    I think there will always be confusion when talking about "stage" and "studio" synths. Some synths are designed for very specific purpose, other try to do it all. Today on stage I would think most musicians need to be able to store patches for quick access from song to song. IN the studio, few of us rely on one synth to do it all. The Matriarch has a stage price but you can't save patches so this synth is confusing, plus the fact it is a mono synth, no chords on stage and no stereo field in the studio. It is probably a more flexible option than the Sub37, so buy a Sub37 for stage and Matriarch for studio? Just guessing now. Nice to have all the choices we do today :)

    • @winesynths
      @winesynths  3 месяца назад

      Matriarch has a stereo signal path and even has the great analogue stereo delay! And it’s 4 voice paraphonic. It has an arpeggiator and a sequencer. To me it’s a great performance synth for live! Grandmother is mono and only has a lousy spring reverb and only one envelope. This is why the smaller one doesn‘t really make sense to me.

    I like the idea of using it as a sound processor. I've never used it this way but it sounds really cool. To me, the really surprising thing about this synth is the way that it works for ambient productions. if you listen to the raw sound, you wouldn't necessarily think that it would work well in these settings- in fact it's my go-to synth for fattening up lines played on acoustic instruments because of the way it blends in seamlessly.

    • @winesynths

      Yes! True! In general I find Moogs to have a kind of „organic“ sound! And with the delay and the stereo filter the Matriarch has a lot of potential for any kind of complex sound structure. I also nearly always use the delay on the sends in my mixes! In conjunction with a Lexicon reverb it‘s just 👍!

    Dem Video gebe ich 4,75 von 5.0 roten Hypster-Nasen; einen solchen Spaß hatte ich lange nicht bei einer Synthesizer-Besprechung. Bitte komme niemals auf die Idee, einen Vocal-Coach aufzusuchen. 😅
    Den Matriarch habe ich mir zu Weihnachten geschenkt und ich entdecke bei jeder Forschungsreise neue Klänge. Ich lege dir ans Herz, die Patchkabel in jeder denkbaren Weise zu stecken, denn der Wunderkasten wird traurig, liegt dessen Vielfalt größtenteils brach. Wir Hessen sagen: Weniger Wein, mehr Kabel rein! Ist ja klar, trinken wir doch hauptsächlich Äppler.
    Die Matriarchin klingt wundervoll nach 70er-Jahren; im Handumdrehen erklingt die schönste B-Movie-Collage und man fühlt die Elektronen durch den Raum schwirren. Von butterweich bis brachial, das Repertoire der Dame ist riesig. Mit dem Filter alleine, ohne einen einzigen Oszillator, lassen sich viele unterschiedliche Klänge zaubern, zumal mit Selbstoszillation und in Feedback-Schleife.
    Vor dem Kauf dachte ich, die paar Steckverbindungen böten kaum nennenswerte Klangverformungen - etwa wie der Korg MS-20. Diese Annahme war weit von der Realität entfernt. Heute kommt mir der Matriarch wie ein kleines, gut ausgestattetes Modularsystem vor, das vor Tiefe nur so strotzt. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist unschlagbar wegen der Materialqualität und dem enthaltenen Moog-Klanguniversum. Schon das modulierbare analoge Stereo-Delay, das auch als Chorus verwendbar ist, ist die Anschaffung wert.
    Happy Mooging! ❤

    Not sure what a "hipster" synth is but the Matriarch is here to stay. Its a classic and will go down as one of Moogs Top 3 instruments in my opinion. The beauty of this synth is how deep it is. It really has no limits. Add a Big Sky pedal to this and you have beautiful ambient pads. The delay on the Matriarch alone is worth the price of the synth. Its truly an analog beauty and is the gateway to modular synthesis which is another universe in itself. Does that make it hipster? LOL

      If it actually exists, a hipster synth would be one that prioritizes style over substance. Specifically, style that gives the user a sense of being cool, trendy, forward-thinking, or counter-cultural-however they define and attempt to embody those terms. The SOMA Terra might be a good candidate here... However, in my experience, "hipster" is a quality people participate in, and it rarely (if ever) describes an instrument itself. It's more so about how individuals use the instruments. As in, are they using a Moog setup to feel cool and be perceived as cool by others, or do they just want to use beautiful, well-made instruments? Presumably, one could certainly use the Matriarch either way, or any number of other instruments for that matter... Personally, I absolutely love the sound of the Matriarch. It has such an incredible presence and the delay is the by far the best delay I've ever used.

    Hello, I am considering getting this synth, but my question for any owner is : Does the Moog sound justify the price ? I can get an analog synth such as Prophet Rev2, Prologue 16 or a Novation Summit for a similar or even cheaper price, and they have similar construction, more effects, more poliphony, better sequencer and presets memory. Thank you in advance

    • @winesynths
      @winesynths  Год назад

      This are 3 Polysynths. Its definitely not comparable. For a budget I would go for a Behringer Monopoly or the Poly D.
      Or if you also like spring reverb and don‘t need 4 Oscillators a grandmother is a really nice synth too.
