I have enjoyed your videos and have been photographing wildlife for several years. Yesterday I set up and waited along the Dolores River in Colorado and had a family of common mergansers swim by what a great experience. While watching for the local birds I had a weasel pop up a couple of times but never got a photograph but now I know where it hunts. Like you said the best shots come when you just sit and weight.
Thanks for watching I really appreciate it! That sounds like you had a great experience! Weasels are on my list of wanting to find a photograph but they are tricky to find. Sounds like you have a great opportunity there good luck!
We just had a Northern Waterthrush, which is out of its range in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California, very difficult to photograph! It took several visits to just get a mediocre image. Your Waterthrush video and photos are amazing, not to mention the Merganser family. Kudos to you!
Thanks for watching! That sounds like you had a great encounter though! The waterthrushes are one of those species that you need to spend some time with to figure out where they are going to be. I guarantee that if you keep going back you'll end up getting great shots!
Love the Merganser images. Those ducklings are fast the way they jitterbug about. Get yourself a foam yoga mat to roll up and strap to your camera pack. They don't weigh anything but make laying on those rocks much more comfortable.
That was incredible, and good advice on waiting for rather than chasing! I have never seen Mergansers in a creek before only out on Lakes, what a much more intimate experience! They look about the same age as the ones I saw on Father's Day in the Adirondacks, it is amazing how quick and agile they are. The bits on the Water Thrush were pretty cool too.
Thank you for watching! They are definitely more common on the larger bodies of water but can breed on the smaller tributaries as well. They really can move fast!
I have photographed the northern waterthrush but never the Louisiana waterthrush. I have seen the La and it was easy to determine the difference when seeing them. Wish I had had my camera with me that day, too.
Both of them are fun to photograph. The Northern Waterthrushes tend to hang out more in marches and slow moving water where the Louisiana are around the brooks more often. Thanks for watching!
I use a Nikon Z30 for the vlogging. It does great 90% of the time but in low light or if I'm wearing camo the autofocus starts to really struggle. Combine the two with a hat on and it gets really frustrating. Thanks for watching!

The Louisiana water thrush is definitely one of my favorite warblers.
They are very unique which makes them on of my favorites as well! Thanks for watching!
