  • The sophomore studio album by Alanis Morissette, released solely in Canada in 1992 on MCA Records Canada. After the success of her debut self-titled album, her follow up album was anticipated with enthusiasm by several program directors. The content on this album was considered more deep, personal, and ballad driven in contrast to her previous glossed up dance pop album.
Ultimately the album failed to have an impact on the Canadian music charts, selling only 50,000 copies (half of what its predecessor accumulated). Despite being certified gold by the Canadian Recording Industry Association, the album was considered a commercial flop and a victim of the sophomore slump. With Alanis’s two record deal was completed with MCA Records, she left the label and later had success with her third rock inspired album, Jagged Little Pill.
After Alanis’s metamorphosis from the pop genre to the rock genre the album was removed from circulation and has been out of print since. Today this album (along with her other pop album, Alanis) has been virtually forgotten by the general public (not even released on iTunes or Spotify), but has a small underground following and a modest cult bop status.

if we talk about a deeper and more creative pop-dance music, I prefer this album rather than the fist one "Alanis"...this album reaches another peak with the rhythm and lyrics!! Alanis reached the peak at pop music creation so I guess this feeling moved her to inspire from rock in her third album "Jagged Little Pill"!!! Excellent music..it's the fist time i listen to this dance-pop musical masterpiece!!! it is a new branch of pop, an evolution of pop music!!! Greetings from mexicans living in Ecuador!!! 2021...God bless us always!!! WE LOVE YOU ALANIS!!!!

Between '92 and ' 95 the sounds already had changed immideately. The Synthie-Pop-Aera had already turned over in the mid-nineties.

Easy. Alanis has all but buried her pre-"Jagged" work. As far as Maverick was concerned, that was the start of her career, and her two MCA albums were kinda like the kids she refused to acknowledge. Supposedly she's softened a bit on that stance in recent years, but not enough to allow them out again.
I didn't even know they existed either until I saw a segment on VH1's "Where Are They Now" that featured her.

It's a shame they tried erasing her early career with Jagged Little Pill. Obviously a masterpiece of an album, and also influential on pop music of the 90s, but did it really have to come with erasing history? 😲
These early albums are appropriate for an artist who was barely a teenager when her singing career began. Someone exploring the sounds of the era, learning the process of song-making. Clearly a lot of talent even here, I love the production too, very professional.

Ironically Alanis herself isn’t ashamed of her pre-JLP albums. She once said in an interview:
“I'm not scared people might hear these records. I never did Playboy centrefolds. There's nothing I regret. Maybe people will just understand that my lyrics are from different experiences if they hear those records. It validates [Jagged Little Pill] ... There was an element of me not being who I really was at the time and I'm now more experienced with my life. It was because I wasn't prepared to open up that way. The focus for me then was entertaining people and getting my feet wet in the business, it was about being young & having fun as opposed to sharing any revelations I had at the time. I had them, but I wasn't prepared or comfortable with sharing it.”
In fact Alanis even considered putting tracks from her first two albums on her 2005 compilation album The Collection, but was talked out of it due to the contrasting genres of her old music and her newer music.

Wow. I always wanted to hear the pre-JLP albums just out of curiosity, but I never could find copies at our record stores in the USA. This is about what I had imagined these songs would sound like. Well, for the most part. At times, I almost want to finish her phrases with lyrics from Janet Jackson lol. Not sure if I saw that one coming. Anyway, thank you for sharing, this is quite an experience for me.
