Sirula - a village in the Municipality of Ohrid, in the vicinity of the
city of Ohrid.
This village is located in Ohrid field, in the northern part of the
territory of Ohrid Municipality. The village is mountainous, at an
altitude of 1,060 meters. It is 18 kilometers away from the city of
Ohrid itself.
Sirula is a mountain village on the very border with the neighboring
area of Debrca. Surrounding villages are: Kuratitsa, Rasino, Vapila
and Livoishta. Locals are supplied with drinking water from springs.
The village is of compact type and is not divided into
neighborhoods.
Sirula is an old village. In historical sources, it is found in 1582,
when there were 41 households and it was a Dervenji village. It was
located on the Ohrid-Demir Hisar road. For the safety of the road,
there was a guard in Visoka Chuka, as well as in Straine.
However, this old village was located on a higher ground, near the
source of Zengoa Fountain. The change happened in 1820. The
village of Kutel or Kale is located on the old village. The location of
today's village was actually the fields of the former inhabitants of
the old village.
There were once two monasteries in the vicinity of the village. One
on the border with the atar of Vapila, in the area of Manastirishte. It
was a famous monastery and had over 6,000 goats and more
monks. The second monastery was in the Sveta Petka area, which
was later transferred to the village of Velgoshti.
In the 19th century, Sirula was a village in the Ohrid Kaza of the
Ottoman Empire.
During the Ilinden uprising, all the houses in the village were
burned.
Atar covers an area of 23.6 km2. It is dominated by forests on an
area of 1,301 hectares, 610 hectares are arable land, and 156
hectares are pastures.
The village basically has an agricultural-forestry function.
Until the end of the Second World War, the locals were mainly
engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. They raised goats,
sheep, oxen and horses and there were 10 bacillas on the
mountain.
A large number of the population moved out of the village, so that it
changed from a medium to a small settlement, inhabited by the
Macedonian population and has been brought to the stage of
displacement. Thus, in 1961 Sirula had 631 inhabitants, and in
1994 the number decreased to only 25 inhabitants.
According to the 2002 census, 10 inhabitants, all Macedonians,
lived in the village of Sirula.
According to the last census of 2021, 2 inhabitants lived in the
village, all Macedonians.
