Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

Well, if politburo dictated that, no soviet submarine skipper dares to object..
And since soviet politburo usually made of from 60s to 70s years of age politicians..
The probability of absurd commands emerged out of theirs collective senility is rather high..

Stealth is nice to play, but for a viewer, especially one not accustomed to the game, it lacks tension. Though the literal close encounter was impressive, overall it felt like bullying hapless children.

i Love how this game creates stories and tension by sheer gameplay mechanics.
Like... you are cruising and then you are stopped by a contact. You get in and it comes up to be a random merchant. You are about to leave and then officer says "NEW CONTACT BEARING XYZ". You have a sudden "what?!" moment and scramble to identify it, hoping for it to be some other merchant or perhaps some outdated patrol sub. And then to your horror you identify it as Sierra II or Akula class. And then you hear
    "TORPEDO IN THE WATER!"

  • @thegungadfly8930

Great moment when you were at 2 knots and 90 degrees to the enemy sub. At that point they either launched or every second their firing solution got worse and yours increased. Then you set your turn to continue to be both quiet and nose on to the enemy. Perfect.

Great job! A lot of my instructors came from Narwhal right after she was decommissioned, so I heard LOTS of stories about her when I was in training.
Also, jjst a couple of things:
    1) USS Narwhal was based at Naval Base Charleston, SC until 1994 (there's a great picture of her submerged in the Charles River during Hurricane Hugo in 1989).
    2) USS Narwhal was her own class of boat, but based on the 637 (Sturgeon) class, with a different propulsion plant and main machinery layout, which made her the quietest attack boat in the fleet until Seawolf. I'm guessing that may have been a bit of a freudian slip there. :)
    Looking forward to this series!

I was aboard USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) and moored at the Polaris Missile Facility, Atlantic (POMFLANT) for Strategic Offload when Hugo hit. We could hear over the radio that "a" submarine had broken loose from its mooring during the storm but did not know it was Narwal. When Narwal was in port, they always mounted a giant spike onto their sail.

    • @Heldermaior

It is widely know that she was quiet. In fact she is too loud in this version of the mod. An alpha can be as quiet as she is which is ridiculous.

    • @larrydingethal8406
      @larrydingethal8406 2 года назад +11

During my time on subs from 80-86, Narwhal was known as a spec op boat so i find it unrealistic that she would be deployed as a G-I-UK gatekeeper because she was so valuable as a one off quiet boat that was more suited for intel collection missions. The gatekeeper role would have been filled by the more than capable standard Sturgeon class sub (minus Narwhal and Parche) in that era plus some 688's.. The first gen LA's of that era had the speed to keep up with carrier and battleship task forces so they were primarily used to screen them in addition to some standalone ASW work, but since they weren't under ice capable in that generation, the job of patrolling the bastions also fell to the 637's.
I also agree that Narwhal is too loud for this mod - it should have a signature similar to the Ohio class - in other words a hole in the ocean.

    • @Heldermaior
      @Heldermaior 2 года назад +3

@@larrydingethal8406 i edited mine to go around 110 dB in silent running. 115 in the 1968 campaign. The 1968 campaign with the Narwall becomes unique. The sensors available fir everyone are much worse and you are so quiet you are undetectable. I can literally park myself and allow a soviet sub doing 10 knots to pass under me without it being aware of where I am. You are a ghost... And for 1968, your speed is more than adequate for an SSN.

This popped up in my feed for some reason. I haven't played sub games, but I was a reactor operator on the Barb in 1984. Of course, we were in the Pacific, not the Atlantic.
You wouldn't believe how stressful it is to watch these, even though the whole Navy stuff was a lifetime ago. A torpedo in the water is like a flashback to hearing the XXX alarm go off in the Sea of Okhotsk, not that that ever really happened of course. ;). Around the time of KAL007, things were pretty touchy in the region.
If I don't stress out too much, I'm gonna have to play the game on the Barb. 1984 was after the Mare Island refit and the sonar guys said we had the best sonar system in the fleet. We couldn't go as fast as the LA class, but we could go deeper and at 4 knots on the EPM, we were as quiet as an Ohio.

I bought copies of RSR in every country I visited, as they all had different covers. I have a dozen+ hardcover and a couple dozen various paperbacks (yes, it's obviously my favorite fiction book, the battle of Alfeld being one of the best written battles in fiction history IMO).

Currently playing a NATO '84 campaign in the North Atlantic with the Skipjack, it is pretty tough, since that sub is pretty loud, at 5 Knots, Silent Running, at about 145 dB.
If I'm close to enemy subs, like around 5-7,5 km, they either can hear me pretty soon or immediately hear me in case of high tech soviet subs.
So I rely on deception tactics too like firing from the baffles and dog-legging, especially the later is the mightiest advantage NATO subs have with the wire-guided torpedoes.
Making the enemy fire into the totally wrong direction, because they think, you shot a straight running torpedo.
Just today I had a mission to intercept a Cruise Missile Submarine, which I barely managed (I attacked the wrong sub group, sinking 3 Foxtrots, that was a hell of a shoot out), I sneaked into her baffles, torpedo with passive sonar down her course. At no point she went alarmed, they got struck in their aft by the torpedo and they had no clue, that I was out there, not even a counter launch :D

Always love to see more of the Cold waters campaign. During the height of the cold war, the technical gap between US/Soviet on submarine warfare was one of the key reason that the Soviet was unwilling to wage any major conflicts with the NATO. They knew they can't detect the US subs, and that means the nuclear warhead can potentially be launched towards Soviet any time anywhere in surprise.
Looking forward for the South China Sea campaign soon since that seems to be the most challenging from the US stand point.

Followed you now for close to a year. I do not comment, have no SM to share. But as to you comment about opening series. I will definitely say my part to keep you going. Thanking you much for the entertainment.

Great to see such an interesting series. Since I was in the merchant marine during this time, I could easily have been the target of Soviet subs. Go get them!

I heard so many stories about that plant when I was in prototype; my class JUST missed so many cool things in the Nuclear Navy in general, it seemed.

I've been waiting quite a while for a new cold waters series from you. I was really happy to see it in my feed. I also love playing as the USSR, but I fully support the decision and I'm just really happy you're continuing cold waters content regardless.

Hey wolf, in Cold waters there is a proximity detection for all vessels at a point, so it's pointless to not go active on your Torpedo since it's not like real world. Keep up the good work tho it's an awesome series.

Ik think the dot mod disables this funtion. Because irl a vessel, cant hear anything in het baffles unless they have a towed array running

good stuff. this is a game that i haven't been able to get a good handle on and i've always ended up in some kind of diving and surfacing corkscrew trying to run away from torpedoes. i feel like i could almost play half competently now after having watched this one.

Maybe that 2nd Victor heard about the 1st one and kicked his pig (cavetated) to get into the battle area, only to find out he WAS in the battle area. Great Cinema as always (esp. the 'Whale's eye-view').
