Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Kickstarter): www.kickstarte...
"Tainted Grail is co-operative board game for 1-4 people, that will take you to the fantasy grim-dark re-imagination of King Arthur legends. You will create one of the members of B-team, outcasts, that must rise to a challenge and figure out the secret behind fading Menhirs (guardian statues) and try to save their village and perhaps whole Avalon in the process.
Tainted Grail combines exploration, survival, character development, immersive storytelling and card-driven combat and non-combat encounters into adventure experience set in original universe.
During the course of the game, you will develop your hero, explore new location set on tarot-size cards, manage your resources, develop your attributes as well as customize your combat and none combat decks. Advance exploration will direct you to choose your own adventure journal with a lot of different directions you will be able to take."

Welcome back Rollers! Let's dive into another exciting gameplay video for the Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon! Looking forward to your thoughts on what to do next after you watch. Enjoy!
Intro 0:10 | Overview 1:10 | Giveaway! 2:01 | Guardians 2:46 | Gameplay 4:51
Correction 26:10: Festering Wounds is my characters permanent issue, so when I went into exhaustion I should have taken a wound when resting. Don't worry, I'll be giving myself a wound going into the next one. Thanks to 'OutOfCuriousity' for the great catch.
7:28 I lowered my energy by one after killing the Hare and I shouldn’t have. Great catch by a number of people!
instablaster
Just to clarify, when you defeated the hare, were you actually supposed to lose an energy? I thought because you instantly got 3+ and defeated them they didn't have any chance to "attack" you?
Nope! That was a mistake. I’m going to put that in the pinned comment. Thanks for mentioning it!
You character has no empathy, he would not waste 1hour of his time saving her. 1day worth of backtrack and carrying her? lol, girls as good as dead. 🤣
And don't forget you still have the Mead card, so you could go all in and not worry about exhaustion while exploring or helping if you decide to do that.
That's a no to saving her then from you! haha
Exactly! That mead card could come in real handy! Thanks for the feedback my friend.
At 17:26 should you have drawn 4 cards because you passed the previous turn?
Hey Cameron! I didn't pass instead I performed a few mulligans last turn which isn't considered a 'pass'. Hope this helps! :)
Well Calvin is right - Beor has no empathy, sneaking around and stilling from friends, he would definitely leave her to die. Unless he would expect some reward to be get from it, and you know he likes getting stuff :) As it's only one day work I would say he should bring her to the island.
That's exactly it. I could see him wanting the reward and not caring for anything else. Thanks for the feedback Olmor! :)
Since you have 1 energy left in the end is there any reason not to explore the same place again and pick a different option. Or is there a rule that limits you to only exploring a tile once per day.
Hey Steve! There is no such rule that I see in the prototype rules. Of course that may change in the end. Thanks for watching. :)
Nicely done play through. Also, may turn out to be costly at a bad time of year. Now, how to justify backing this game.
Easy think of how much you save and all the extra goodies youll get by backing it early. That is plenty of justification, and if not than who better to give you an awesome Christmas gift than yourself right?
Sounds great to me. Now to convince my wife.
@@scredola You can do it man we believe in you.
hahaha
Sell other games you have? But only ones you won’t play again of course :)
I would have spent my 2XP on practicality or spirituality, since these are the cheapest option for improvement. Your character is strong on the left side traits and tending towards fighter and not towards diplomacy, I would probably pick Practicality and further specialize my character, with the idea to stay out of diplomacy encounters as much as possible and muscle my way through. About the wounded bowmaiden: whether I want to save her really depends on the size of her boobs. Naaaah j/k save her, just to see what you pick up as a reward. I'm sure you are too curious not to.. EDIT: My guess is that she will join you as a Follower and provide a combat bonus.
Thanks for watching Gaby! Part 3 is up :)
As for your experience. You seem to be pretty powerful in combat now but lacking in Diplomacy. While I wouldn't put anything into Empathy (not having any seems to be working in your favor right now). Maybe adding one to spiritual might be beneficial?
I like that idea. That might be the next one I bump up. Thanks Matthew! Love the feedback.
Beor is supposed to take 1 damage when resting exhausted isn't he?
Yes he is Josiah! This should be caught in the pinned comment or the beginning of the next video. Cheers! :)
First off, great part two of your game walkthrough. Really enjoyed it, and was rooting for you during those combats. You did forget to use your Horn again while you were fighting the bear (not that you needed it, but still). I can't wait for part #3!!!! As for the Huntress, I know people below said that you have no empathy and therefore would let her die (or something along those lines). I however look at it as you could have a lot to gain from saving her. She could end up joining you as a follower (something we have not covered yet during this play through) or give you an Item/Secret. Either way, that alone makes it worthwhile to try and save her. Finally, if for no other reason, the Healing Isle (forget the exact name) gives you an opportunity to recruit an acolyte. I would be curious what advantage that gives you having him around. Bottom Line: I recommend saving her, if for no other reason than for the challenge of getting her down there before she dies. ;)
Awesome feedback Matthew! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I must say after all I’ve heard I believe our character with no empathy still knows there is something to gain from this. So I believe I’m leaning in this direction currently ;)
Around 51:00, couldn't you have used the Combat Horn for an extra card?
It wouldn't have made a difference, as it turns out, but you might not have needed to make such a risky attack :-)
Hm... as far as XP is concerned, a point of Spirituality in the near future definitely seems like a good idea for Diplomacy. (Even if it isn't that important, I can imagine Spirituality being useful when exploring certain locations.)
Now, the bow maiden.
I looked up what happened when the last Menhir goes out - it's pretty severe (lose two health and take two terror at the start of every day), but it's not outright game over as I expected.
As a result I'd say it's worth the risk to save her. Something that makes you go out of your way to this extent must have some great rewards... right?
The only downside is that it's unlikely you'd be able to explore the Fore Dweller Mounds for some time if you help her.
Hello Prinny! Totally could have. I didn’t need it but I should have. Good eye!
Really enjoying your Grail videos and looking forward to the next one. I found you from the Grail Kickstarter update and will be checking out your other content
Hey Karakka! Welcome to the channel! Glad you’re enjoying the Grail playthrough. Can’t wait to head into the next one soon. Hope you find some other games you like as well. See you around! :)
Dido
@@ClintK. Thanks KK! :)
Try to save her ... Can you go over how the "Quick Save" feature works, in more detail, in your next video? I have watched you check off the boxes on your save sheet, but not sure how it works if you have to breakdown the game and then set it back up quickly. As someone who doesn't have a lot of room to keep games set up for extended periods of time, a quick save feature may be a big feature for me.
Hey Ryan! Next video is up and I got this message a bit late. I’d like to show the save feature as well. Maybe I’ll make a small video for that one :)
This seems a really good game with very unique mechanics. Maybe if you aid her she might join you, or marry you lol. Just don't let the light go out. Thanks Adam, really enjoying this playthrough.
Thanks for the feedback on what to do next Trevor. I would hope there would be some benefit to that task haha. Seems to be pretty even so far! That's the thing, I need to ensure I don't miss getting igniting another menhir or I'm in trouble! haha
I'm not sure but it seems the first monster you fought where you were unable to get a sequence first time round was fought incorrectly. When you killed it with a score of 5 the monster notes that on a 4+ it counters all does this not mean that you had to kill it over two rounds ie do 3 damage one round then next round do two ?
Hey Morphiushell! The combat table only resolves after I check whether my total value defeats the enemy. If the enemy is defeated then it doesn’t get to use its combat table attack. Hope this helps!
Rolling Solo weird I have watched other videos doing it the other way. Can you have another look at the rules and confirm for me please ?
The phases are:
Draw Phase
Building Your Sequence
Your Turn
Choosing the Attack
Attack
Proceed to the Start of the Next Turn.
In the Your Turn phase you total up the value and if your total is higher than the enemy. It is defeated at that time. Only if it is undefeated does it get to have an attack. Hope this makes it clearer. All videos follow these phases during combat. Cheers!
Rolling Solo superb thanks for clearing that up the video I watched previously had it wrong then this way makes sense hence why I have watched multiple videos to grasp combat. Again thanks for giving me the run down of the rule can’t wait for my copy of the game :)
No problem! Remember that they may even change rules during the KS or after so be prepared for that. I had one major one regarding Guardians change on me half way through the playthrough ;)
I'm so excited for part #3! When will it release?
Hey Hijtec, Part #3 is underway in terms of filming. Should be within a few days. See you then!
@@RollingSolo Love the camera work even though it must be pain to edit. Keep up the good work. Im psyched for the next episode!
Thanks! It’s a passion of mine so no pain here ;)
See you in the next one!!
Watched Part 1 and just started watching this. Is there any reason you chose to apply the hare's attack (minus one energy) after defeating it? When you fought the brigands last time, you didn't suffer their attack (minus one health, run away) after defeating them. Just now reading the rules, it seems the brigand battle was the proper way to play it--combat ends immediately when you generate attack equal to their health. If correct, I admit it is confusing since the enemy cards list a value with a plus after it for their highest attack response, instead of listing something like 6-7 for the brigands or 1-2 for the hare. I can only assume this was done to accommodate changing enemy health due to effects (like a hare that buffs to 4 health after being drawn because of some enchantment in the region).
Nope! That was a slip up on my part actually. Thanks for watching and good catch James :)
Another winner! But I think if your gust star was in it, it would be more exciting and stuff would mysteriously disappear! 😉
hahaha so true Maurice!
If im not Wrong the mead would help you prevent the exhaustion for at least one day meaning you would get all your energy back. I know you said you'd call it a day with her in tow but with the mead it may not be a bad idea to use your energy down to zero and then just gain it all back the following day thanks to the mead item. You should definitely take her back though and maybe look into hiring that assistant. Meanwhile in the hunters grove with your remaining one energy if the mead doesnt work the way i thought you could explore again now that you have the tracker mark. Just a few suggestions. Really enjoying the play through and excited for this game.
Ah! Pedro, with the wise feedback. I do believe we could use our mead in order to aid us in getting her back without penalty of exhaustion and festering wounds. I’ll look into it. Thanks so much for the great feedback. :)
Dude, thanks for great video! Would u comment how you think this one compares to Gloomhaven?
Hey! I haven’t spent as much time with this one to compare fairly. I think the narrative in Grail is much better and better written. That’s the thing I noticed most so far. Cheers!
Can you only use the horn once? If not, shouldn’t you have gotten an extra card when fighting the bear?
Nope, you get it every time to end with the Courage key open at the end of your sequence. Did I miss giving myself that bonus? Rats!
Your character don't have any empathy just drop her on the road side lol....
hahaha best comment ;D
Well that's one vote for no aid!
The game looks really nice, and very nice play through. Keep up the good work.
PS: 7:45 defeating the rabbit would not trigger it's counter attack, thus you would not lose 1stamina right?
Hey Sorrow! Thanks for the kind words. Glad to help you out. That's correct no energy lost if I defeat it. As I determine if I defeat it first. Did I hit myself for one energy there?
@@RollingSolo Yes you did 😁
Damn! haha That was a slip on my part. That's can't be undone at this point but thanks for mentioning it!
Thanks for another great video! One small comfort when waiting for the game is that its so far away in time I will have forgotten your playthrough :)
Ulf! Glad to be able to ease the pain ;)
It toppled Monoliths Batman at 4:20 GMT on day 1 backing, that places it 2nd after KDM 1.5
Pretty impressive hey? :)
Help the maiden & unlock the northwest statue! Great run thru
If a Menhir that is currently on the board goes dark, can you re-light it or is it dark forever?
I believe you can relight it. I’ll have to double check but pretty sure Graham.
Nice video. Thx for showing the game in action. I may be wrong but isn't the characters disadvantage "Festering wounds" and therefore at time mark 26:10 when resting you should take one wound?
Awesome catch! Indeed I should have. I will make sure to correct this going into the next one. Thanks for letting me know! Cheers
Consider this one pinned! Thanks
@@RollingSolo I have heard / seen in various videos that it is quite difficult to play a game and explaining the rules alongside. So rest assured that I'm impressed with your work, even more so by your reaction in this case. I'm not sure how I would deal with such comments, when putting affort into a video and someone comes along and said: "Hey dude on your 3250th Action on day 15 you made a mistake!!!". So keep rolling.
haha Thanks OOC! That's great to hear that I can cover this one in a way that helps you out. Adding the time tag certainly helps so I appreciate that. Sometimes it takes longer to figure out if I made a mistake but we're all human so if I'm wrong I'll note it for others to see to ensure the game is played correctly. Doesn't matter how many times you read the rules or play the game, something is bound to slip through the cracks sometimes. Thanks for the feedback, it was a great catch and something I can fix for sure. Cheers!
This looks great, thank you! How do you feel this compares with HexploreIT? This seems quite different in character building and much darker...
I'd say this is much closer in comparison with 7th Conitnent in terms of the explorations and discovery. In regards to Hexplore it I'd say they are two quite different systems. Hex is much more RPG in a box. Whereas Tainted Grail is more of a narrative adventure game. Both of these titles can live in a collection with little crossover imo. Thanks for watching Ryan! The Kickstarter is off to quite the start!
@@RollingSolo Makes perfect sense, thank you!
The text on 106 card could be good (hopefully) or bad!
Let’s hope it’s not bad haha :p
Man... I am sold! ~ now finally I understand the battle mechanics ...I am so pumped lol!
Woohoo! Glad to be able to help you out. Remember you can always ditch card(s) at the end of your sequence each round in case a card at the end is preventing you from continuing a sequence. :)
@@RollingSolo man... so nice! can't wait! just hope my luck gets better... lol lately I have been destroyed on every deck building game I played... hahaha
When fighting the Wyrdbear at 50:00, during round 2 - shouldn't the Defend card that you played in round 1 have ended your turn immediately? Or does this just take effect in the round the card is played from the hand?
Hey gaemsi! Thanks for watching and good question. Only when you ‘play’ the card initially. Hope this helps!
@@RollingSolo It does, thanks for the clarification. And thanks for the playthrough, I'm enjoying it very much!
Further in the more I am excited for this, take her to the asylum I say, see what happens, there has to be a pay off
Another for bringing her to the asylum for aid. Thanks for letting me know Adam!
Great video. I’m excited to back this project!
Thanks Jesse! Glad to help you out. Cheers
The only thing about this that makes me take pause is what you said around min 40. I really hope leveling up doesn't award a random card. With the amount of systems in place, I like the idea of having some form of choice in how my character grows. It is so thematic and character-driven, the idea of random builds just feels super at odds with the rest of the experience. I hope they don't make this change, personally
Otherwise, this looks brilliant. Backing it today.
Hey Clayton! As of the recording of the video you do get a choice and it’s not random or in any sort of progression. However this is all subject to change of course. I’m with you on being able to customize my character to my liking as I go. Thanks for watching! :)
@@RollingSolo Oh man, thank YOU for the hard work. I know how difficult it can be to balance understanding, playing, teaching, and organizing all this stuff and you're brilliant at it. Fantastic content here. You should stop being so good at it because I'm spending way too much money lately! lol
I actually had another question. Did you ever feel the opportunity to use Beor's special craft ability? Five energy seems unbelievably expensive. It forces you to be exhausted to get one item. Curious to know your thoughts on that. Thanks for the reply!
haha Thanks Clayton, comments like that make it all worth it. I truly enjoy what I do as it’s a passion of mine. I feel like his ability is best used at the start of the game? Maybe if things don’t pan out so well in terms of getting an item that’s useful. I got lucky and landed a weapon and an armour later on. So I just didn’t see the need but I can imagine if Mead was your first card. You may want to build yourself a weapon.
The rules are changing slightly as the Kickstarter goes on and likely will after the KS also with play testing continuing. I look forward to maybe doing an updated run through when it lands! :)
@@RollingSolo More runs are always welcome - looking forward to part 3! I suppose you have a great point in your luck when it came to finding good items. I agree it makes the most sense to do the action early, since the pressure to make progress will be much heavier when the round tracker looks scarier.
Thanks for the insight - keep up the great work! New subscriber earned, my friend!
Welcome to the community Clayton! Part #3 is up. I hope you enjoy it ;D
Cant you explore twice?
Hey Indra, I can if I’d like! :)
an ability gain always comes in handy
True statement!
Game is looking great.
Sure is! It's doing well and also is fun to play!
take her back. you know you want too
haha ;p
When you explore a card and only have a "Otherwise, go to book symbole", there are no verse number. How does it work? Do you use the card number as the verse number to read?
Good question! When you go to the journal page the first paragraph is the same text that's on the back of the location card as well. Then right after that there is a breakdown of ALL the different options for you to do. This includes any options listed specifically on the back of the location card as well. Does that help? :)
@@RollingSolo Yup! Thanks :D
Perfect! :)
That answers my question (that I didn't ask yet), too... So when you explore, you can just go to the journal without having to move things around and flip the card, correct? Missing some cool art, but I imagine when really in to a game, that's a step I could stand to skip (especially for centrally located cards).
Seems that the way they're going but who knows if there would be visual clues for the story or not you may miss!
+1 for the rescue
Hey Andy! Thanks for watching and the feedback. We’re up to Part 4 now. Hope to see you there.
looks amazing!
Really does. Plays very well too. I like what I’ve seen so far!
Rescuing her seems like a good way to get the Hunter's mark status as a guess
For spending xp I would get a card so you can ditch hex
Hey Stefan! Thanks for the feedback. What do you mean by ditch hex?
Your card hex that needs magic to use seems to be a dead card till you have a source of magic
This is true. I do have a resource of magic by the end of this video. For this character off the hop, I don't start with the magic resource. Other characters focus on it more. :)
The game looks awesome. But with Christmas (and another Dutch celebration) in December I have no budget for this.
Sell games you never play. :)
Understandable. It's tough when a game like this lands this close to Christmas. For me, if I want a particular game, I use local FB groups to sell games I need to let go off due to space or don't plan on playing anymore. This doesn't work for everyone and you have to do what's right for you in the end. Thanks for checking out the video DY!
drop a $1 pledge - you still count as day 1 backer and can upgrade your pledge and still qualify for the extra character for free. by the time they open and finalize pledge manager, it will be well into Jan, I think. And this game, minis are completely optional, base pledge is all you need to play the game.
This is also a possibility as well! Good point SR. I do this as well at times! GIves you additional time if needed.
$1 pledge is available, and gets the 24hr bonus if you upgrade in the pledge manager, allows more time to budget and not miss out if you do plunge in
Go south go south!
A vote for south you say!
Save her!
Seems that’s the choice winning out :)
When attacking the Wyrd Claimed, since you did 4 attacks with the cards, shouldnt it counter all the attack?
The combat chart is specific to the 'values' on the cards. Not the number of cards in your sequence. So card in your sequence have a value in the middle and are also modified by items, abilities etc. Does this help? I've noticed this is a common point of confusion in other gameplay videos as well.
@@RollingSolo Kinda! So you used 2 skills cards and 1 items to do 5 pts of damage. I though the 4+ on the combat chart would have applied, kinda like the Band of Highwaymen, where if you did 6+ damage in a sequence, they would run away.
You total up your value and if it matches or exceeds the enemy health than they don't get to 'react' and use the combat chart. They're considered defeated. Is this what you mean? :P
@@RollingSolo oohh ok I get it! So if you did only 4 dmg, it would have been countered, but since you did 5 it straight up killed it, without any chance of retaliation. Right?
Basically you always resolve your attack first and if it meets the value of the enemy than it is defeated and doesn't get to attacked back. Otherwise it does attack back. Who knows if some enemies may have the special ability to hit you as they die. I haven't encountered that yet but it wouldn't surprise me to see it!
So for enemies that had a 6+ run away and 10 health, you don't want to hit them hard out of the gate as they'll react and run away. You want to strategically chip away at them. Which in turn causes you to take some damage which can be nasty ;p
This game looks sweet! I need to back it!
Happy to be able to show this one to you Charlie! Did you end up going for it or still deciding?
@@RollingSolo I backed it after watching this video, but entered your giveaway as well. :)
Good luck! I'll be announcing that one just before Christmas! :)
Beor is not the most empathic beast around, but the possibility of a reward, can be the the crucial point. I guess he would carry her, because he can do it in one day, and then ask for something in return :)
haha Thanks for the feedback and watching! Next part is coming in the near future. Cheers!
Gameplay seems scripted....
Hey! The game is certainly scripted from the stand point of being very narrative driven. So you have an objective you need to go after but the way in which you get there is not scripted. The gameplay and mechanics allow for a lot of choices. With many encounters having multiple branching outcomes. Hope this helps!
Omg the combat seens painful. No combinaison possible sometimes... Ouch... Combat suppose to be in my book exiciting and tactical...
Hey Jean! It’s a very different system. You have the ability to flee if you don’t want to fight or are having a tough battle. That’s always an option and you simply take a penalty for it. Hope the video is helpful for you either way!
Thank you, as always a great video.
I do have a question. That first glade hare you killed, it retaliated with -1 stamina even though you defeated it, is that always the case? That would mean the bandits from last video always runs away.
Appreciate that Jon! That was a mistake on my part. I shouldn't have taken that hit of stamina. I'll make a note about this as well. Cheers!
Just a little tactical hint... Going into exhaustion isnt a huge deal UNLESS you are Beor who takes a wound for resting exhausted. But as long as you use both the red dods of exhaustion, you wont get any less stamina, you just get to use 6 one day and only 2 the next, but that still evens out at 4 per day and can actually be something that you can use to great effect fairly often, so take some marathon turns and really exaust the options of an area.
Good points here Martin. Something worth trying! Even though Beor has festering wounds, I can eat food at the end of the day to gain a health. Which makes the loss and gain a wash. Marathon turns would be quite fun as long as I don’t beat myself up too much in combat or diplomacy. Cheers!
Love the review(s) of this game! You have given me enough to make me support the Kickstarter - my first table top game!
Whoa!! That’s awesome to hear. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. Another Part is coming in the near future as well. :)
I have to agree with Sorrow: thematically, your character has no empathy, so he should leave the hunt maiden to her fate. BUT! Perhaps he gets taken in by her wild beauty and decides to save her, learning some empathy in the process (i.e. you use some experience to gain an empathy point)? That would make for an interesting character arc :)
You never know what could happen. Part of not helping her hurts mainly because my character probably only cares about the reward "thematically" ;p
@@RollingSolo That works as well! Looking forward to the next episode to see what you decide :)
Can't wait to continue this journey!
As your character has no empathy I say leave her and move on. Great play through by the way.
Hey Paul! Thanks for the feedback. It's true...he's not strong in the category haha
Bowmaiden yes, spirituality point.
Cody! Thanks for the feedback. This is going to be interesting. It's back and forth with the votes.
Nicely done. Game looks interesting
Sure does Eric! It’s an exciting one. Cheers!
