I recently installed the wiring to connect a portable generator at my residence. This included a 30 amp receptacle in an attached garage and an Interlock switch at the main service panel located in the basement. I will be installing the same alarm at my main service panel. The only difference is that I will be installing the alarm on the exterior of the panel so I do not have to remove the panel cover to turn the alarm on or off. I considered installing the wiring without the Interlock, but ultimately decided for safety reasons, and as required by code, to install the Interlock switch. It was relatively easy to install after relocating several breakers so the new 30 amp double pole breaker was in the correct location for the switch to function. Have had to use the generator twice in the last month and the Interlock switch worked as designed. Looking forward to having the alarm installed to know immediately when the power is back.

Great video thanks. Had been struggling to find something similar in UK. I think I’d install the alarm outside of the panel so it can safely be turned off without having to stick my hand into a live panel while half asleep. Or maybe just ask the wife to do it…

Russell thanks for the positive feedback. Just used mine during Hurricane Ian last month and it worked perfect.

Thanks for this. The only thing I would add is that you ought to consider using an inter-lock kit. Many power failures happen in the middle of the night so we're not always in our most alert state when trying to fire up the generator and re-routing power and all, half-asleep. An inter-lock makes it fool-proof so even if you do forget to cut the mains breaker, the mechanism will prevent you from energizing your house circuits from the generator while the mains are still turned on.

Glad to hear it helped. We actually had to use it a couple of weeks ago after Hurricane Ian. Yes, an inter-lock kit should always be used in a generator set up to ensure you don't back feed any power to the grid and potential electrocute a lineman.

@@TheEndGrainWorkshop It would also prevent energizing your power cord, or generator inlet plug from utility power, when it should not be.

so, actually, what is stopping you from wrapping the antenna around the wire just OUTSIDE of the panel, and finding a ground outside of the box?

You can certainly do that I just didn't won't to have to do any drywall work so I mounted the alarm inside the panel.

I would think that an interlock kit is required by code with this set-up. This is basically the same thing as backfeeding from your dryer plug.

Good question David. The interlock kit is for use when you have a dedicated breaker for your generator only. It will not allow you to turn on the generator breaker unless the main breaker is off. When you are backfeeding from an existing circuit like the dryer plug you mentioned or another circuit like I used, that breaker is alway in the on position so how can you lock it out with the main breaker? If you know of a product that does that please let me know or send me a link. Thanks Rick
