And with no audio tricks or effects needed they sound just like their album. Great bunch of guys too. You get the genuine impression that they are friends on and off stage and have been for years and years. It's a real shame that Huey can no longer hear well enough to stay in time and tune with the songs anymore. :(
Their music is timeless, sounds as good today as back in the day. The singing is flawless, not a note missed and perfect harmonies, as good as the studio version.
And the guitars he's playing aren't the amazing pro grade stuff now that's easy to play, like a Suhr or even a good Schechter, so he had to work hard on those 1970s guitars but that's just what guys did. Today you can buy Eart or Shije guitars from China that out of the box play better than Chris' old Strat probably did. The manufacturing and quality control has just gotten that much better.
As a wedding/corporate musician and band member, to be able to simultaneously play an instrument and sing /harmonize live is not easy...but it is a rush!
Yes, I agree. The live, big, multi-part vocal harmonies were spot on. This sort of expertise is quite rare & takes lots of hard practice. The only slight thing missing from the mix were a few guitar-fills. However, with the vocals being spot on, this song's version is essentially perfect.
From The Great Music Renaissance of the 1980's. Real Music and Real Singing. No Talking Mambo Jumbo 3rd fool brains from the hood dropping the f bomb. Great music and great time growing up in America.
I always loved how this song was written. The backing vocals are at the beginning and end of the verses. And the transition from the first to second verse is killer. Great baseline. Just an all around classic perfectly written song!!!!!!!
The original just made me cringe! Luckily, Huey Lewis was in Clover when Mutt Lange was 1 of the producers. Lange said yes to the change in lyrics. Then, it hit big time! The 2 of them had a reunion in 1991 when the 2 of them wrote It Hit Me Like a Hammer. Mutt was busy writing for Eddie Money in LA + writing/producing with Bryan Adams in London + Vancouver. Check Hard at Play credits: HL thanks BA + Lange!
I remember when this song hit the airwaves. It seemed that everyone liked it, whether they were into rap, metal, country or whatever. I think it's because they can recognize the actual vocal talent within and the subject matter is something we can all relate to. Great song and great band too!
NOT underrated. They have sold 30 million records, won Grammy Awards, multiple Hot 100 top ten singles, 3 number one hit singles, have multiple multi-Platinum albums, and are one of the RIAA top 200-selling bands of all time.
The amazing thing is that, INDIVIDUALLY, they aren't really doing anything mind-blowing. But man...when they put it all together? Phew. This is one TIGHT unit.
@@parkerkenney6859 that was my point, they don't get the recognition now. Very few modern singers can write for themselves or play an instrument or even sing without help. It's all about overnight commercial success. There are exceptions but they are few.
@@robertsimpson2167 The irony of your statement is that this song was written by the producer, Mutt Lange. Doesn't take away from the talent of this particular group, though
I remember when I was 11 or 12 and I first seen Huey on SNL , and I thought look at these guys, no makeup, no gimmick just pure rock. From there on Huey and the news would be the reason I am a musician now, Thank you Huey, get well because the world needs you.
Exactly right....all these guys are great. Chris Hayes is a severely underrated guitarist. Mario Cippolina- underrated as well. Bill Gibson- rock solid drummer. Johnny Colla- solid rhythm guitarist, amazing saxophone player. These guys are superb!
Every time I watch a live video my jaw hits the floor. Tight, proficient, exceptionally talented and all stellar singers in their own right. God I miss good pop-rock. Hell I just miss good pop.
Outrageous. My high school rock band attempted this song. Pretty straight forward musically. Forget the vocals. Near impossible to even come close. Top to bottom great song and band.
They are great for sure. If you love harmony vocals check out the bands Chicago, Steely Dan, The Eagles and Crosby Stills Nash & Young! Also the Beach Boys had some outstanding harmonies!
thanks for finding this JIm. I directed this concert special for MTV, 40 years ago. Unbelievable. They were great. The Control Truck was really rockin.
Impressive! I've had some comments about thinking it was lip-synced because it sounds so good. You and your team did an awesome job, including the person that ran the audio board.

Jeezus what a great live band. During the middle 8 when they hold the word “Photograaaaph”, their voices are making a Bmaj7add9 chord; not an easy thing to do live!
@@drippinglass Close! Flat the maj7 and sharp the 9 and you’d have a 7#9, aka the Hendrix chord 😃👍 The #9 is the same note as the minor third of the scale; so you have the major 3rd on bottom with the minor 3rd on top, and that ambiguity is what makes the Hendrix chord so interesting.

Flawless live four part harmony in addition a stellar front man. Many “artists” that chart today can’t produce a marketable performance in a studio without Auto Tune.

That was the day Nirvana appeared on Mtv for the first time. Flannel shirts, gay guitars, and no solos. Was the beginning of the end for music.
As I said previously on another song, Huey Lewis and The News were our homegrown group in Marin County. In 2024 .!!!!
Just pure talent. No effects, no auto-tune, analog equipment. Simply the best!
It’s criminal these guys are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They turned out the hits and were awesome!! What a joke!
RRHOF is a joke don't mean NOTHING, no Foreigner, 38 Special, Bad Company. Huey another band that was a hit making machine. It is what it is........😮😮
I really doubt if they lose any sleep over it. LOL.
And they had the soundtrack of Back to the Future.
RRHOF doesn't have Motley Crue either!!!! GO FIGURE!!!! But they have LL Cool J!!! LMAO
There really should be legit RRHOF in another city.

Chris Hayes is criminally underrated as a guitarist.

Huey Lewis and the News was just one of those bands that never failed to sound the way they do in studios in a live concert
These harmonies are insane. They are so tight it sounds better then the studio. Talent and practice. Love it.
That’s my yardstick between good bands and GREAT bands. They sound great live and on the recording. No autotune here. Just a great sounding band.
Def see practice makes perfect,,huey is so talented, just mind blowing
With Tower of Power backing them, one of the best live concert's of the 80s. And that was saying A LOT back then!
