- I run through four of my favourite pairs of motorcycle jeans and explain the differences between each pair.
Which pair scores the highest CE rating of AAA, and how much of a factor does armour play in the rating.
Cordura, kevlar, dyneema, protective, resistant, single layer and double layer motorbike jeans; it sounds very daunting, so I aim to simplify the process.
The four motorcycle jeans I discuss are:
- Hood Jeans SK11 (release date April 2021)
- Pando Moto Boss Black 9
- Tobacco Motorwear Indigo Selvedge
- Rokker Rokkertech Slim Tapered Black
I also take you on a ride with me into London on the Triumph Bonneville T120.

I crashed in a pair of Hoods. In hospital for 13 days, but no lacerations to my legs. They work. Nice pace to this video, Freddie. My Resurgence Gear New Wave single layer jeans have a claimed slide time of 11 seconds. I agree black jeans look awful when they age. Cool leather jacket at the end. Nick J

Being a chubby with short legs I look a prat what ever I wear So I go for things that dont make me look such a prat and stick to the idea
of not falling off because if I do my jeans are not worth a light!!!! Being old very very old I have also riden with no helmet NO NO not
at 80 M.P.H. plus just crusing "cant beat it " Sadly the youth of today will never ever experiance it I just loved the no helmet bit of riding

Great video, how much of a a difference do you notice in warmth between fully lined Hood jeans and the rest. Wondered how practical they are in teh summer when you stop and walk around off the bike in terms of being hotter than unlined jeans.

I will have to check out the hood SK11‘s. How do they compare to the hood K7?
Getting a jean that runs true to size would probably be the best for me because I run between a 36 to 38 in both men’s and women’s, but motorcycle clothes tend to run small especially in women’s so I just stick to men’s.
My biggest issue with shopping for jeans especially in men’s sizes is the inseam. I am a 30 inch inseam and what I’ve been finding mostly is 31s and higher. people say big deal you can just get them tailored. well not really because you have to cut into where the Kevlar is in the knees in order to bring that part up so that the knee pad can lay right, and Kevlar is very hard to work with for a tailor. Plus you compromise the integrity of the protection so that’s why the fit for me has to be pretty spot on.
This is where I feel maybe the tobacco jeans could make a difference because you don’t have to worry about armor but at the same time I would like armor so maybe perhaps the tailor can sew on armor pockets so that I can slip the armor in.

Thanks very much and really glad you found it useful! If your RSTs are CE rated “B” and they came with no armour, or just knee armour, there’s a good chance they’ll become AA or AAA rated if you just buy armour for them🙂👌🏻
@@FreddieDobbs : In every practical sense, you are correct, and this is where EN 17092 should perhaps have followed the way the glove standard operates, with the performance level of the garment being separated from the presence or absence of armour. For example, a pair of AAA jeans with hip and knee armour could be designated AAA/H+K, with knee armour only, AAA/K, and with no armour at all: AAA.
As the standard currently is, the same three configurations would be AAA, A and B.

Freddie how can you tell a modern Triumph from the original. Well apart from the obvious on the early Triumphs the badge Logo swept under the H and formed the H bar. Another great video and appropriate as after 50 years of riding I have just brought my first pair of jeans.

Ah that's so interesting- I've literally only last week heard about PMJ for the first time! Couldn't agree more- the choice is incredible!
Another vote (if belated) for PMJ, feels like you're wearing normal jeans, really nice fit, even though they have armour in them.
And total agreement for modern bike gear, when I started riding bikes some 40 years ago, my choice was a leather jacket, more fashion than protective, or waxed cotton, which sweated in the summer and was like wearing an ironing board in the winter. normal jeans, until I could afford leather jeans, Army surplus Para boots and a full face helmet, that felt like wearing a bucket with a hole in it, with a visor that last a month before it was so scratched you couldn't see out if it, misted up if pinned down and rattled if left slightly open to get air in.

Nice instructive video. Being in the UK, what are your thoughts on Roadskin single layer Taranis Elite Jean? AAA rated according to their website. Only a handful of reviews on RUclips. The reason why I ask is I can’t find a US retailer and don’t wanna take the plunge unless I know their quality

The big questions relate to the trend for single layer and they are 1) does the fact that they do not have any lining to absorb friction while sliding mean more damage to your skin since it will be forced to rub against the single layer? and 2) does the UHMWPE melt do to high temps while sliding on pavement and if so what does that do to your skin? I ask since I have both some single layer jeans and some leggings made using UHMWPE? These are CE rated AA but its not clear regarding what happens to a rider's skin when wearing these which needs to be added to CE testing since that is after all the key requirement.

Check out Italian PMJ jeans. Single layer and AAA rated. Fairly new on the market and already making a name for itself.

I've been looking at the hood jeans. in your opinion, would the double layer in them be to hot for summer riding, say around 32-33 degrees c?

Good question- yes the Hood Jeans are a fair amount warmer than single layer jeans. This does make a noticeable difference from 26degrees+!
Hi Freddie, great video. How tall are you? I’m 6’ 5” and am torn between the bobber, the Indian bobber and the T120, what would you suggest for a taller rider?
Hi David,
I’m 6’1. The Scout’s seat is much lower than the T120’s. I have had someone message me to say he’s 6’1 and found the Scout too low/cramped for him, but I personally find it perfect for me👌🏻
T120 definitely you’ll be fine with, but for the Scout- I’d say take it on a 20 minute ride to make sure.
Let me know how you get on, because I’d love to hear a 6’5 rider’s thoughts on both bikes!🙂

What’s your thoughts on the protective leggings from companies like Botex or Merlin? I wear them with any fashion Jean/trousers and are protected with resistance and armour. Not sure how they stack up against these higher price point jeans though..

I think they’re great for the diversity and very comfortable. The armour only becomes noticeable when wearing with the ‘skinny’ jean style and even then it’s not too bad and would definitely recommend. But with the drastic price differences between these and the higher end motorcycle jeans, it does make me wonder if there’s any compromise in terms of resistance performance.

@@drivingontheedge9391 Interesting. And I agree, although if your leggings are AA or AAA rated, then they'll definitely be as safe as the jeans. I also like the idea of the armour top that you wear under a normal jacket.

Do you wear armour? It doesn't look as if you do but these it can be hard to tell. Personally I find it quite restrictive and certainly doesn't help with comfort on a hot day. Just hope I don't come off.
Motolegends in Guildford in Surrey are a proficient provider of motorcycle PPE - including jeans jackets boots and helmets
They've also garnered a reputation for vociferously slagging off those that disagree with their opinions as well 😬 Check out their response to an article that Hood made about why they don't make single layer jeans, and also their more recent response to a Bennett's video that used an independent testing house to review the different types of jeans.
Having gone off at about 15 mph (stupid gravel, my fault) and struck my knee on the tarmac I'd not ride a meter without level 2 armour. I just got up and walked away but without the armour I'm not sure how good my knee or hip would have faired. Not that keen on finding out considering how light and thin armour is these days.
Does anyone make a Kevlar lining like long Johns / legging you can put on and wear any of your favorite clothes overtop
PandoMoto Black is not single layer, it is still considered dual layer, as all critical part is dual layer. Other areas just not require full kevlar protection

Pleasure! Jeans are the "trickiest" part of motorcycle gear to purchase. It's the sizing more than anything for me- it's veeeery hard to get the right size, although that's jeans in general, not just biking jeans! I have a set of D3O Ghost armour and it fits into pretty much all biking jeans (the armour's universal), and I usually just slip the D3O ghost armour into any jeans I wear as it's very slim but meant to be ver protective🙂👌
So ummm, I have an important question, for me at least... it's been bugging me about these riding jeans and pants I see everywhere.
Don't the knee pads have to stay in position in Front of the knee?
How is that possible when almost every single pair of jeans I've seen over the years (or pants) have them dangling around inside the pants over the general area of the patella/knee cap, but not locked on to the front by velcro straps or something?
Is it because they design these pants n jeans for the first ever impact ONLY? Presuming the knee is bent, like when seated, upon first impact?
Does it make sense though? What if the impact happens when we high side n our legs r straight or all over the place; or low sided n rolling on the tarmac! Who knows!
Does it not make sense for them to be designed with this in mind?

A very good point and you’re absolutely right; riding jeans won’t work for any knee down action. For safety, leather racing trousers with the velcro and very thick armour on the outside will be best, but these riding jeans allow you to be comfortable on and off the bike and make life easier.
I have the same issue. Two pairs of part dual lined (abrasion zones only) jeans. Dickies and RST.
Both have different armour pockets. I've tried RST contoured knee armour and forcefield flexible armour. Neither still in place in each of the jean.
So to Freddie's point. I use the denim Kevlar jeans for more casual rides and anything else leather trousers.
I guess to conclude, I use my denim jeans to stop skin being chewed up, not to prevent skeletal damage.

My bike is worth less than your four pairs of jeans ... But it took me to some interesting places...
A reasonable attempt, but you clearly don’t know the difference between the types of material these jeans are made of, nor their specific brand names. I thoroughly recommend you research these (mainly to ensure you’re calling a material by a manufacturer by the right name (ie Kevlar, Dyneema,Aramid,and all the UHMWPE derivatives etc).
No mention either of the makes or types of armour included. D30 used in the Roker (pronounced Ro ker, not rocker) jeans is currently the best you can get: there’s a whole video waiting for you to make there. Non Newtonian Fluids are the way forward, so check them out.
Too many reviewers, both well established and relatively new to the game are so focused on the slide times and A ratings of these products that they seem a little blinded by what would more than likely happen in the real world, as opposed to in the testing lab, where the results come from. Unless you’re a professional crash tester, then it’s highly unlikely you’re going to be safely sliding along the tarmac (on one part of your clothing) marvelling at how good (or bad) the abrasion resistance is. No, you’re more than likely rolling, bouncing and even colliding with anything and everything that’s in the way. Maybe lined jeans are better at absorbing bodily fluids?
Aramid/Kevlar/Dyneema lined jeans are much heavier and bulkier than a single layer UHMWPE jean, which for some users is fine, but if you’re planning on walking around on a hot day (it’s over 30c today) you’re going to be very uncomfortable. However, if you’re just wearing them on the bike, fine.
Personally I’d have split the video up and done a more detailed review on lined jeans, and then a video on single layer jeans, with a separate one again on the subject of armour.
My criticisms are constructive and not intended to be insulting to the reviewer; on the contrary, I hope my comments help for future reviews.
just to be clear the hood jeans are only AAA when the armour is in them, AAA does not in anyway reflect on the jeans material, without the armour they are class B.
Ever go through airport security wearing them?
Knox is less money and better as well. (comes with knee and hip armor too)
