Kizer's new Drop Bear is more than just a new Axis Style Lock knife. With a 154 CM Blade, aluminum scales, buttery smooth action, and a new perfect fit in the hand you can bet it's exactly what you would expect from a company like Kizer. Kizer is calling the lock the Clutch Lock it runs on Omega Springs and it is adjustable! This simple but ingenious design is going to give you five levels of adjustability to your Clutch Lock making it the first type of this lock that can be personalized and customized from factory! Since they are inviting us into the knife they put great consideration into accessing the adjustable Clutch System but making the scales sit on top of the stainless steel liners using only two torx head screws. The also made the pivot screws independent of one another using a D-Shaped pivot nut. So you can take apart one whole side of the knife without having to consider the other.
The Clutch Lock on the Kizer Drop Bear is a really innovative design not because it's overly complicated or because it's something entirely new but because it's the first to open the door to variation in a lot of our favorite lock type. I've been carrying the Drop Bear for a few weeks now and am really loving it as a new knife and I am really excited to see what potential it has unlocked for the 'Axis' Style lock world.
The production value just sky rocketed. Its awesome to see you leveling up. Blade hq was never the same when you left.
If we're being really honest, Blade HQ was never the same after Ben left. It was the chemistry between Ben and Zac that made the channel. Once DCA started working for the opposition, Blade HQ was pretty well dead in the water. Nice to see Zac's personal channel doing well though.
@@twatmunro Just watched KnifeBanter #50 (Bens Collection aka the Knives Ben Stole) and thought exactly the same.
Side note: the additional Gemini springs included are thicker than the installed ones. These will give you a little more resistance if desired. GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for sharing.
We are living in the Golden Age of knife making! So many innovations, so many knives, not enough monies!
Remember Ya'll, if you're not familiar with Axis-style locks, that you'll need to adjust both springs if you're changing the spring position, not just one. You probably could get away with just doing one spring, but the tension might feel a little wonky, & it could be harder on the springs, making them more likely to break.
Overall I think it's really cool to see something like this, especially since it only involves simply drilling a few extra holes for one end of the spring. Great job as always, Kizer!
As a side note: Yes, I have had several Benchmade Omega springs break on me, without significant fidgeting or anything. I actually prefer the aftermarket springs much more & those have never broken on me. Any time I get a new Benchmade now, I immediately replace the springs. The aftermarket springs alsao have just a touch more tension than factory ones from BM, which is nice since I get tension I like without having to bend the new springs.
The production quality is so different compared to a “tabletalk” video it makes the video a lot more engaging, nice work guys.
Really appreciate it💪
I love this idea for the Axis lock and hope they move it to other knife offerings. Thanks for the heads up!
Same! I don’t know if it’s a good idea but I love the idea of a sheepdog with a Clutch lock!
Common sense first evolution for the lock, I'm shocked no one has done it before now, congratulations Kizer.
And to include extra hardware and springs, is class act, and should be the standard across the board, even if it's baked into the price.
Still reasonably prices also, as you may otherwise spend the money and don't like it, because of the lock/detent tension.
All that and the Lefty Love, puts this on my list of wants.
Wonderful video! Something that is interesting is that the extra lock springs in the box are thicker and are more stiff than the springs that come on the knife. I swapped my springs out and the detent was much much stronger!
Rad! I didn’t catch that👊
I was wondering about that. Thanks for posting.
A really cool clip! 🤣 And a really cool knife. I broke the omega spring on my bugout, bought stronger aftermarket springs, managed to puut it back together thanks to a youtube clip but now I have blade play and by trying to solve the problem I ruined the pivot screw and I couldn't get a new one because I live in Germany and the authorized dealer won't sell one to me because I didn't buy from him . . . HELLO KIZER!!!!!!
I will ignore ALL your RAD drops, because you are very informative, thanks.
My titanium and lc200n dropbear just arrived!! I’m really enjoying it, the finish on the ti is crazy and the detent with the stiff springs and highest tension settings is the best on any crossbar lock I’ve tried, even better than my kunwu pulsar which I love
I watch a lot of knife vids and I’m not sure that anyone else has covered this feature on this knife yet. Regardless, it’s awesome seeing you doing your own thing. Keep the content coming, Zach!
this is why im so happy that the axis lock patent ended. now other companies can really improve on it. hope this happens with the compression lock
Totally agree!
#FACTS
there actually were 'copies' of the compression lock made... there was a company out of germany called 'cherusker messer'. they had two or three overseas produced models in their lineup that used a 'puzzle lock' which was essentially a modified compression lock. operated the same, but the engaging interface was a bit different.
the models were one jürgen schanz design, more utilitarian in character, and the 'lapu lapu corto' by bram frank in at least three sizes, which is a highly specialized self defense design.
What types of innovations would you want with the compression lock?
@@Mr1121628 i wouldnt want to change anything about the comp lock^^ i think they changed something in the lock interface to prevent any patent issues.
I just got this knife yesterday for Christmas. I had never heard of Kizer before yesterday. In my opinion this knife is every bit as smooth and nicely finished as the couple of Benchmade knives I have, possible more so. Zero blade play, well balanced, nice quality pocket clip, and super silky smooth action. The only downside for some people is that it's made in China.
Zach my man you are a legend
Video editing, carpentry etc you can do it all!
And this is why patients have an expiration date. Benchmade found a real winner in the axis lock and ran with it was long a they could solo to tie it to their brand. Now we can start to see companies doing cool stuff like this so they aren't just making a vanilla copy of the original. I dig the extra springs too. I have never broken a set of omega springs but my main work knife wore out a set. The center of the springs were sanded down by dirt and grime until they fell in two. I digress, great video once again sir. I look forward to the next one.
Something about the design stood out to me when I saw this Kizer. Thanks for the deep dive man! 🐨🔪🤙
Glad it was helpful🤙
Very good and accurate ending. As an Aussie I can say. I love our Drop bears you just have to be careful in the bush at night.
Great video and this adjustability is gonna open up a lot of customization for a lot of people! Love Kizer! :D
I love that Kizer is doing this. One reason why we might see this kind of thing from certain companies is because they don't have the same warranty service obligations as some others, and customers don't have the same expectations. As much as I love those services, it really opens up cool new possibilities to see intentionally modable designs
Kizer. Just. Keeps Raising The BAR . Great Video Thanks ZACK 😊
Damn, I love that blade shape.
Wow.... I really love this. it's like a minimalized bugout. I hope there's a serrated version
i predict that there will be a huge market for custom 3rd party scales with this guy for how easy the scales go on and off. cannot wait to see how this knife is!
The cameo at the end 🤌
No Drop Bears we’re hurt in the making of this video😎
Just ordered the lc200 version...can't wait!
I ve carried fixed blades for the last 7 years and I think this may be my first "premium folder".
I had an omega spring break on my bugout after a few months. Ordered some replacements and haven't had an issue in the 3 years since.
Hey Zac! Great video as usual.
Happy new years my man.
Zac, thank you so much for getting back into the knife scene. I'm assuming you had a non-compete, glad it's over. Hope to see you at BSWest.
I agree with you, game changer.
Yep, gotta buy that. I hope some dealers eventually have an upgraded exclusive
It would be so cool to see some blade and handle variations for sure!
I miss you on blade hq, but I'm glad to have found your personal channel!
That seems so obvious in retrospect. Well done Kizer!
Agreed😁
This is a fantastic innovation on the axis lock. The only thing extra that I would have asked for is for the tightest setting to be more than your normal amount. The lightest should have been less than most people want and the tightest should have been more than most people want to give both extremes and everything in between. The lightest probably already is, but I love the spring tension on an axis mechanism. I'm sure you could tweak the spring to do whatever you want or even drill your own custom settings into the frame. Awesome knaf and awesome review!
I've broken all the omega springs on all my omega spring knives, so it's great to have a spare set.
What a great idea! First thing I do when I get a benchmade is loosen the pivot to get better action lol
Thanks for putting this knife in the spotlight!! Keep the videos coming!!
Great vid. I’m convinced. Ill be adding a Drop Bear to my collection in the next week or so. Excited to see what options the aftermarket will bring to the table.
This is awesome. I have a Griptillian, I always want to call it a Gripzilla for some reason, lol.
Anyway awesome knife, had it for about 12 years no problems except one of the springs for the Axis lock became dislodged about 5 years ago and reduced the tension just enough so I can now easily close it one handed with just my thumb pulling only one side of the lock back as opposed to having to pull both sides with thumb and forefinger.
So the flaw became a feature. But I really like how this new Kizer let's you adjust the detent from the start. Great innovation.
👍😎👍
Great looking knife. Nice innovation.
My thoughts, bearings on the lock system. Most axis style locks are metal on metal creating drag. Bearings on the moving studs would be epic smoothness.
and epic cost! 😅
This looks very cool! I like that you can customize the knife and the purple thumb studs on the black; Take my money! 🤑
Thanks for your great review.
Very cool customization, love the blade profile too!
Can’t wait for the micarta version
Outstanding review I purchased Escort in Burlap and I had adjust the omega springs 3 times and I want purchase Drop Bear in Black blade the same one have your holding I probably have to adjust the Omega springs but that's fine it's on sale right now $95 you can't beat that again outstanding review thank you again Zac
Lmao the drop bear got ya!!! I really like the stout tip on that blade shape. The model with the anodized thumb stud is cool too!
I’m honestly in love with the blade stick and shape!
Glad you did the tests with the different settings. The first thing i thought was, how will this make a difference and it's all down to how easy or hard it is to work the lock bar.
That's awesome and the production value you offer is great.
Thanks! Production value is all Jamie the wizard🤘
@@zacinthewild Humbleness is good too, your doing a great job with your content.
Great video. Thank you.👌
That Kizer sure is a nice looking knife. A good mix of multiple knife blade shapes and handles. I think I might have to get one to try it out! Thanks for the vid, Zac... always interesting to hear your thoughts on different things especially knves and tools.
I think you’ll dig it! Thanks for checking out the vid👊
Thank you for another great video Zac. It looks like a great size, it kind of reminds of the size of the HK you shown before.
Some similarities for sure! The HK is a bit more compact.
Oh gotcha! By the time I got into knives HK was being made by hogue. I’ve had my eye on a few of the HK models. I only own one hogue product so far and it the full size Doug Ritter and I love that one.
I've got the fatcarbon one and I love it
Another great video Zac! I’m definitely picking one of these up when the release.
Glad it was useful👊
I just got my drop bear plus another Fiest I've gotta say I'm loving what some of the Chinese companies are doing Kizer, Kansept and We/civivi but enough of that I'm off to play around with some Gemini springs 👍
I would like to see benchmade do this. Hopefully Kizer has fixed its hardware. It's known to be kinda soft and strip friendly.
Cool idea
Great looking knife, and I really like your tool also I think it’s awesome that it comes with a pocket clip.
Got mine yesterday and it's awesome 👌
Rad! Glad you’re digging it.
Now we need a Big Bear at 3.5 inches!
I’m sure they’ll do it!
I wonder if you put it on the loosest setting can you force it closed? You can flip it open without using the lock, can you close it without? This is big- opening the door to so much innovation! The prospect of a locking slip joint is fascinating to me
It has a positive lock at the top like any other axis style lock.👊
At least they put a reversible pocket clip on this. Unlike on the original button lock. :(
If they made a tanto version 🤤 take my money
I've just been looking at these. Loved the handle, hated the blade. Looking forward to different knives using the same lock though.
great video!!
Spare parts and springs are just a great attention to the costumers! Living in Belgium could make it very difficult to obtain spare omega springs from benchmade for example...And from the inventor of the axis-lock, the success of the brand and the price range of benchmade, don't see that kind of things(the spare parts), it's just a shame...
Again great review from your part! Greetings from Belgium! And sorry for my very average and poor english....;(
Impressive, both the knife’s features, your presentation and your access to this new knife. Not many other American knife bloggers have presented it yet. One question, what is the default spring setting out of the box (1-5)? Keep up the good content. Shoutout to Jamie on the drop bear effects.
Thank you! The ones they sent over were set at 5 or the most resistance. I would assume that is how they will all ship.
Drop bears are the most dangerous animal in Australia. I once saw someone attacked by one when I was out bushwalking and the memory of that vicious mauling will never leave me.
Stay strong👊
I always wondered when someone would do that
I like that the lock intensity is adjustable. And that the scales can be removed without taking the hole thing apart. But I'm not sure of that blade shape. I prefer a little more definition and slimmer angle to the tip.
It’s definitely a thicker “sloppier” blade shape. I love it though!😁
@@zacinthewild how does it compare to the Civi Elementom . (I had one but lost it.)
@@marygrace5231 not very similar knives. In hand I’d compare it more to a chunky WE Banter or a boxier Chunkier Griptilian.
@@zacinthewild I meant use of blade actually. I do utility cuts mostly. But I something do push/ pull cuts.
I need this thing
Hope you're okay, that drop bear was huge!
I’d be curious to know which tension level compares to the bugout? Because I think the pull on the bugout is perfect
GREAT review, of course. Very interesting knife as well! Almost makes me want to buy from China again 😁 I think you've become my favorite channel on RUclips, keep up the good work 😎👍
Means a lot🙏
I love your knife videos.
The newest next better thing that I don't have and have to get. Great marketing guys.
What's the Rockwell hardness scale? And is it brittle for the hardness?
good stuff!
I like the knife, but LOVE your hat. Solid company.
They are great💪🔨
RIP Zac!!
FYI mate.! Drop Bears do exist & only in the East Coast of Australia. Cowabunga.! We learn alot about Kizer through Jared of Neeve Knives.
Drop points visual don’t appeal to me but their function is more conducive to my usage. I used to dislike the PM2. I carry one nearly daily once I got it in hand and grasped the design is about function. I sure love function over form but often with function comes form.
This new version of the axis lock is very well thought out. Axis lock being ambidextrous is appealing to this lefty. Sure like my Bugout and next axis lock will be a Adamas in CruWear
I find that the form which follows function is a sweet spot for me with most things especially tools. The visuals of the blade on the Drop Bear is what drew me to it originally and I found I really liked it once in hand!
It's be great if the scales were hot swappable like the TRM atom and neutron so that you could adjust both sides at the same time without having to reassemble one side to take the other off.
Would like to see benchmade or sog come up with a way to turn on automatic vs manual using the same mechanism.
love to see a company is doing something new with the old idea, but you just make this knife unaffordable.
The m390 Bugout and the civivi elementum had a baby
I'd definitely like to see this but with less belly, perhaps like the Hogue deka. I also think interchangeable locks for different textures would be good, similar to thumb studs -- some are too smooth, some bite too much.
A lot of people today still say that this is one of the knifes under 100 bucks to get. Im on the fence about getting it.
Just stopping by for another reply.
Glad to see you and…here you go😁
Need this thing in pocket ASAP
Agreed! I’ve really enjoyed carrying it🤘
That's a way cool locking system. The crkt squid 🐙 to take apart was annoying, but they're quite simple. I've never broke any omega springs on the adamas auto. I prefer a way snappy spring assisted knife or on an auto.
You should do a fixed blade camp knife episode Zac that would be awesome 👌
An auto adamas is a hard firing knife.
Easy and awesome!
Yeah buddy🤘
I love your content and thank you for showing me a knife I need
Thank you for watching!
Definitely a good looking knife. Not sure I’d ever feel the need to change the tension-has kizer solved a problem that doesn’t exist?
I don't know what took so long for a company to do this. I have been adjusting my axis lock/lock bar type lock Omega springs since I bought my first bugout like over 10 years ago. As soon as I get a axis lock type knife first thing I do is to bend the springs in slightly to soften of the lock bar tension.
Awesome! I’ve heard of aftermarket springs but they are always stiffer. Love hearing about modding it in reverse. The Drop Bear or at least something with the Clutch Lock may be your jam👊
Worried about broken springs like how the omega springs are kinda notable for breaking as well, even though they've had years to perfect them
Genius. Is the benchmade tool a homage?
What do y’all think of the micarta version?
My friend, can you share what is the track was from begging??
What setting does the clutch lock come out of the box?
If the aftermarket gets big on knives like these, Benchmade is going to have to up their game if they want to keep those prices. I love my bugout but they really don't want you in there despite it being it's main appeal to mod the hell out of one.
I hope the Clutch lock idea catches on for this exact reason! It will be fun to see what people cook up!
