The EMPERORS CHILDREN Legion in the HORUS HERESY | Legion III : Origins & Lore

- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2024
- Let's continue our series on the Legions of the Horus Heresy with the third legion, the Emperor's Children. In this video, I look at what the original Third Legion were and how the Legion changed, both after reuniting with their Primarch and as the Heresy ground on.

The BEST of legions…!! Thanks for great vid yet again Ian. You’ve quickly become my fave Warhammer creator over the pasts few months.
Maybe blood ravens like it and took it without you noticing it.
Love your content. My new favorite 40k lore channel.
I don’t know if it was intentional or not but, I really love how the fall of the Emperor’s Children can be read as a metaphor for addiction. I find them so fascinatingly human in their hubris and arrogance.
It's definitely intentional, since Slaanesh's whole deal is addiction and how the sating of that addiction always leaves you wanting more. Whether it is a more base, carnal addiction, or a more abstract one like the obsessive pursuit to be better than others.
Slaanesh gives you what you desire, but it's never enough. And eventually, you reach a stage where you are so numb that anything but the most extreme of sensation or achievement lets you feel anything at all.
I'm not sure if it was initially intentional but they really lean into it. If you read the Fabius Bile books they come off as rabid coke or meth fiends.
@Krulla nitpicking but slaanesh is about excess. Although addiction and excess go hand in hand.
It's actually idiotic considering space marines are meant to be genetically, mentally and physically far superior to humans and yet they act like a bunch of 14 year old tik tok influencers most of the time.
@@dimwitsixtytwelve I mean, addiction is basically an excess of anything right? Maybe not medically, but consuming an excess of say, coffee (2-3 cups a day) could be seen as an addiction, yeah?
I highly recommend the Horus Heresy book, Fulgrim. It goes in to lengthy, gruesome detail about the fall of both Fulgrim and the Emperor's Children, and it reads like a horror novel.
I really enjoyed that book.
I also remember one day when I was at my local Games Workshop I either heard this mother herself or someone mentioning about her. The story was about how she was looking to get her child a book to introduce him to 40k. She immediately thought to get Fulgrim. Yeah that book is not a beginners one.
@@ShadowGhost0117 I always thought that the last church would be a great way for newcomers to get into warhammer 40k lore. It sets the tone of the 40k universe when going forward.
@@009_Ghostly_Systematic that’s a pretty good option. Especially since it answers a question so many newcomers ask (namely why is religion treated so extremely in the Imperium).
I used to do odds and ends of commercial writing back in the day, and by fluke of being on the right email list at the right time got to do the Emperor's Children's Index Astartes article for White Dwarf 255 (I think it was 255? The one with a bunch of dwarfs in the snow on the cover, I'm at work and it's at home). GW's own folks have added a tonne of layers since then of course, but I'm still a little proud of seeing bits and pieces I made up enduring in the newer works, like the Laer and Eidolon. Even snuck in a passing reference to my chaos sorceress Sylelle; either nobody editing it noticed, or they didn't mind. (Funny thing, I never actually has a chaos army back then, Syl was just a spinoff of some background I'd written for my craftworlders. Since the beginning of this year I've been slowly painting a Slaaneshi army, after 20 years out of the hobby. Not painting them very well, mind you, but I'm not going to fall into the perfectionism trap like they did.)
got given a pile of old WDs a few years back from a mate, that article is what tempted me into doing an EC army now
@@ginganutjob Oh cool! Another soul snared by the lure of Slaanesh :)
Fulgrim's fall (and what he did to Ferrus) is a true tragedy. Great video as always!
The illustration at 4:11 looks like the beakie is cracking into a can to eat a nice post-skirmish snack, and I don't think I'll ever unsee that no matter how much I know that he's meant to be putting away his battle brother's progenoid gland.
Warhammer 40K was a lot sillier in the first couple editions
The history of the Emperor's Children: A beautiful group of people was scared of deformity and ugliness. Then they learned to embrace their inner beauty
😀😀
Naturally
Slaanesh blessed recovery from Ian after that Inquisition visit in the previous vid..
Don't say that name or they will be back! 😁
Arbitor Ian is back, he's a Perpetual.
As much as I love the HH stuff for them I think my favourite character/story to come from the 3rd is Fabius Bile, that trilogy is easily my favourite Chaos pov story in the Black Library.
The second they make an Emperors Children codex I'd probably make an army. Always liked them
Long overdue!
With the current rate of release, 10th Ed eventually. Whether it'll be a Death Guard level full release or a TSon/World Eater handful of models will remain to be seen.
So glad to see Ian was cleared of charges by the Imperial Inquisition!☺️
Clone confirmed ;)
which reminds me hey there is the Rainbow Warrior logo on the right side of the image at 2:18
A dose of Forget-Me-Juice will do wonders.
Even when I tried to created a loyalists chapter embodying the original spirit of the emperors children I felt dirty throughout the process going down a perfectionist rabbit hole trying to find a fitting chapter symbol or color scheme in the end I abruptly killed the project before slanesh could claim me.
My favorite faction and army of heart.
I give you a PERFECT like before even watching the video.
No title card?
I like these guys. Wish there were more people playing and painting Emperor’s Children.
Lack of models and fleshed out rules make doing armies beyond black legion/death guard/1000 sons and soon the world eaters a more difficult option to get into unless you want to do a lot of work.
When they get their big refresh and codex that will probably change quite a bit. Probably happening in the next game edition.
This is the best I've heard the story of the Emperor's Children told! Looking forward to the next one
Some fun III Legion facts that I enjoy:
The IIIrd were (as far as we know) along with the Ist, the only legions to fight during the Terran Unification Wars. Famously leading the campaign to take Antarctica. AFAIK no other legions we're deployed until the sack of Luna.
The IIIrd had sent a batch of clean gene-seed to Terra during the early days of the gene blight. This significant portion of their gene reserve never made it to Terra, further increasing the speed at which the IIIrd dwindled.
The Palentine Aquila is ANY two headed Imperial eagle. It symbolizes the alliance of equals between Terra and Mars and became the symbol of the Imperium after the treaty of Olympus Mons. Prior to this the Imperial symbol was the single headed Raptor Imperialis with lightning bolts. In Greek mythology this bird was known as an Aquila. The term "Palentine" is to distinguish these two eagle symbols. This tells us that the IIIrd legion were granted the title Emperor's Children after the unification of the inner Solar System.
My first ever painted army was Emperor's Children chaos marines, all done in pastels. I do hear the siren call of 40k tabletop if only to redo my Emperor's Children as during the Heresy.
This channel is awesome in many ways, and the intro and outro music are a trigger of dopamine for me
Loving your style with these videos Ian!
Brilliantly summarised! Certainly amongst the most interesting Legiones Astartes. Looking forward to Perturabo's metal boys!
This is a wonderful series and one I look forward to as the week goes on. Bravo!
Those flying highest fall the lowest. Excellent background, great video, thank you!
I can't imagine how much work it takes to put these together but I am delighted you do it.
very cool video, I've been playing them for over two years and I really appreciated the attention to detail!
Great intro for this video. Glad to see you eluded that purgation kill team.
I appreciate that the LED colour in the case matches the legion being discussed.
I always liked Noise Marines, and the HH models do look neat, but if I built an army it would be a Loyalist faction
you can play loyalist Emperor's Children!
@@philipkelly7369 with noise marines?
@@Inquisdrknss I don't know if you can lore wise wouldn't have sense. Te original of that weapon is...well, curious at least
I really enjoy that you bring new or original art to accompany your vids.
I've been using some fan art in some of the other vids, for legions that don't have a lot out there, but I think all the art in this is from either the Heresy Black Books or from the old Visions of Heresy/Heresy CCG from 2003
Haven't played or collected 40k in years, I have a bunch of stripped Berzerkers that I first bought over 15 years ago, but I have to say, these videos are doing a lot to reignite my love of the hobby. The lore is really interesting and has progressed a lot since I was into it as a teenager (the prime of 3rd Ed), but these small explainers are definitely reignigthing my interest. The lore is so deep and complex but your videos do a fantastic job of giving the important info and the "feel" of the topic of each video. Really good work man.
This was a great analysis of how the Emperor's Children fit into the narrative of 40k.
It would be totally awesome if you started to mention significant appearances of these different factions in the fiction. Knowing which books different factions show up in makes it easier to find books about the faction(s) you play.
This is a great series, can't wait for the Alpha Legion!
Me too, ironically they are the last XD (alpha means "beginning")
Thanks for sharing the back story of the 3rd Legion.
My favorite Heresy Legion. Another great video!
This is the best series EVER
If there is one common theme of the Traitors it is that they held there were no limits. Whether it be artistic perfection, rage, knowledge, fear or raw ambition, the Traitors held there was no line they shouldn’t cross. The loyalists by comparison were those who held they would pass their power onto humanity, that their time as warriors would end, or simply there were things they shouldn’t f*ck about with. They knew there were lines that shouldn’t be crossed.
as I mentioned before in comments to your previous videos Ian I haven't been into 40K since 4th edition, so it's interesting to see what has been added to the background since then... I remember their extreme perfectionism and the war against the Laer but not that the gene-seed corruption started before their fall to Chaos nor that they started Fabius Bile style experimentation on the geneseed, let alone the extreme tactical specialisation
Please cover the Scouring and the legion wars within the Eye of Terror. It's fascinating watching the traitors after Horus' death.
Well done! My second favourite legion👌
Great as always !
Loving these videos.
Fabius Bile is easily my favourite CSM. The book trilogy is awesome it sucks Josh renoylds moved on from BL
I very much agree! Such a great book series as well. Finishing clonelord now and looking forward to Manflayer.
So good Ian wish I could thumb this up 5x
loving this series!
I think you forgot the title card.
Yeah, always annoying when you notice something like that after it's already got 6k views!! *facepalm*
Great video, great content!
Brilliant Chanel, you offer a very different thing to other 40k youtubers
Thanks for the video.
When I first heard about 40k, it was about the loyalist Emperor's Children and how amazing they were, and I fell in love.
Imagine my shock when I found out my favorite legion turned traitor. So pissed. Thought about making a chapter of unknown geneseed that was suspiciously like the EC, but went with Flesh Tearers instead.
Very good video!
My favorite legion
Dam evil chaos sword ! 😳
Ah, Fulgrim. You coulda been best boy, but that's the tragedy isn't it?
I don't believe for a second that Fulgrim in any way beat the demon that possessed him, I assumed that was a lie he told Perturabo.
All that thing is really strange. He was trapped in the mirror and suddenly he was able free himself retake him body...somehow and since then he has never been the same (Indeed that is the "new Fulgrim"). I don't like that part of the story, they explain what the hell happened in that mirror to change him that, the only poor writing thing I find in his story.
My personal theory is that the soul of Fulgrim was fragmented due to the trauma (the loyal and traitor one to summarize). For that reason he lied to Perturabo, because he couldn't ascend to demondhood by giving only a fragment of his soul. That fragment of his soul stood in the very inside of Fulgrim until he reunited with Rylanor. He was able to free what was remaining of his soul that ended in the clone that Fabius Bile did (the perfect clone that he couldn't explain)
Can’t wait for the night lords
AVE DOMITUS NOX
Dubstep slowly grows louder
Emperors Children, once heard “The Aristocrats” joke and made it their game plan.
If these videos are too help getting started with the HH, what I could recommend is not just the showing off models/conversions from the fandom, but also some general/vague guidance on what can be done to better invoke the diversity of each legion. A prominent example would give right now is combining peices of the heresy legion and 40k csm bits for the sons of horus
The emperors non malcador aquilla was single headed (possibly stylised as the single wing talon/beak and legs were familiar with) Eagle with loads of lightning up to as recently as the interview with a custodeii/valdor pov book/s and possibly even the primarchs:alpharius one.
So wild how these 20 legions outnumber the current astartes of thousands of chapters
Thanks these are very interesting so far I like the 1st a lot more than I did before. Like everyone else I want to know more about the 2nd and the 3rd I’m even less interested in than before but awesome videos
Your the only one to mention that taking a sword it part of a duel, fulgrim killing the lair and taking the blade was signifying there end. But having known nothing of choas lacked the proper defense
Those placed on the highest pedestals have the farthest to fall.
Da Party-Bois!!!
Who wants there to be a Chaos Fulgrim vs Clone Fulgrim box set?
So the reason why the Emperor's Children changed their colours from metallic purple to black and pink, in canon, is _because they ran out of purple paint._ Or at least they were unable to obtain the rare pigment needed to make the purple they used.
They also had a propensity of taking skin as trophies I believe, which probably has something to do with the colour change.
What's the book that you pull those quotes from? Seems like a cool book to have a flick through
It's the first Horus Heresy Black Book - Betrayal, which is the one that has most of the EC stuff in it
@@ArbitorIan Ah thanks dude!

The Ancient awaits.
"whole batch" lol
For the Emperor/Engagement!
Everytime I think I'm over the Emperor's children, I see a gorgeous painted mini and feel the temptation again
Slaneesh approves
I'm pretty new to 40k, so maybe someone can help me out. What exactly happened to the 3rd legion recruits that had to be diverted to other legions when the gene-seed of the 3rd was corrupted and lost early in the crusade? Did any of these diverted recruits become notable figures in other legions? I hope someone can direct me to a book or some other lore that has an answer
In the Iron Warriors backstory, it's mentioned that they were SO GOOD at making Astartes that they absorbed a load of the EC recruits
I think it would cool if the IG could use an Astartes as commander.
The Forgeworld Badab war books had some cool options regarding The Astral Claws Astartes mixed in with guard.
The Phoenician approves
I'd really like to know what legion came from Merica lol
uh oh, looks like something screwys going on with the graphics?
I thought it was my connection cutting at first
I should have put a 'signal lost' in there. Oops!

Iron Warriors next! Word Bearers in.....14 videos time?
@@ArbitorIan Big sad Ian. But, I trust you. Always look forward to your videos. I have read a fair few books but extremely new to the tabletop.
Having just read Saturnine saying that Rogal defeated Fulgrim feels like imperial propaganda. Did he defeat him? really?
it’s all imperial propaganda
I understand that he defeated him in a tactical point of view. That Fulgrim version is no longer...in the mood for those things too boring
Wait, so whats up with the gene seed blight? Why is Fabius Bile constantly dying in the novels but the other third legion guys he meets are just fine?
Fulgrims presence stabilised the gene seed. But Fabius is from a very early intake, before Fulgrim was rediscovered, so he's still all blighty
So I have a way on giving a justifiable reason on fulgrim choosing to be a demon prince and it won't change the lore that much.
Fulgrim wants to become a demon prince so that he can become perfect enough to overthrow slaanesh and take its place.
I wanted to pat you on the back for making "Gothic" sound more like Latin.
