Seeing Gavin Rossdale sing Glycerine in the pouring rain on MTV may be the last great iconic moment of grunge -- its swan song, if you will. I think if Bush had come five years sooner or even five years later so as not to have been married to grunge/alternative in people's perceptions, Bush's sound and impact would have been ten fold -- not that Bush's sound isn't impactful or indelible as it stands now but just somewhat camouflaged amid a greater musical transition that was taking place in the breath of their coming to be and that ushered them out too soon.
Well said! Got to meet him once after they played the house of blues in vegas, he was super chill and he gave a great show every time I saw them live (4 times over the years). A brilliant lyricist and musician.
I saw that live (well not on the beach but on TV) that has to be one of the greatest live moments I've seen. At least on MTV, especially knowing that nobody else was willing to go out there and risk it but he didn't want to leave the fans out there. You could barely tell it was raining at first thanks to no HD back then but it was pouring like you said. I think that was the moment I realized how much I loved music period, I was only like 11 or 12 at the time. Anyone who talks crap about Bush or Gavin I show them that (cause 9 times out of 10 they haven't seen it). Also show them the MTV Cribs before he met Gwen. Dude used to be a really humble guy all about the fans (not implying Gwen changed anything).
Glycerine is AWESOME FUCKING SONG!!! My go-to song if I am feeling down or feeling nostalgic in any way! Favorite lyric/verse: "I'm never alone. I'm alone all the time. Are you at one or do you lie? We live in a wheel. Where everyone steals, but when we rise it's like strawberry fields."
Glycerine is one of my all time fave songs, wish this video was actually about it like the title says. It's always interesting to find out the truth behind the lyrics of a song, even if it already means something different to you
6+ years after this interview. It's weird how since I first started listening back in the early 90s how much Gavin put into his lyrics actually helped with my own writing throughout the years. Glycdrine will always be my favorite over all, but it's so hard not to love all the songs of Bush and the songs Gavin wrote. If he ever sees this, I want to thank you a billion times over for you talent and wish I saw you more than once live. Nothing beats live Gavin. Thank you, Gavin Rossdale. Huge inspiration in my writing, old high school projects to show my favorite songs, and listening to ALL albums throughout my lifetime. Was quite sad being so close yet not close enough in 2017 Denver when I saw Bush's bus. Yep, tears in front of a coworker that thought I was nuts... couldn't go.... maybe one day soon. Thank you Gavin and everyone in the band of Bush. Talent beyond anything now a days. Bush is like my own personal soundtrack. #bushforever
Why dont people understand the meaning of the lyric "glycerine"? I saw him in an interview before... he said glycerine is a metaphor for love it can soothe you (think of a skin cream it typically has glycerine or some type of glycol to help retain skins moisture and heal chapped or dry skin) but glycerine can also represent the dangerous nature of love (for example how nitroglycerin is used in a bomb and it can literally destroy you as well. Hence the one word describes the emotion perfectly since it combines both extremes of the emotion using only one word..This makes the song (at least to me).. More grunge than post-grunge as the word can be seen as vague... and you cant immediately make out the meaning of the song...unless you ask the artist and get some more insight.
Susan Staley-Simpson Very underated. Gavin has a very powerful voice. You can tell he's been through some shit. I definitely cite Bush as one of my influences, behind, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Class of 99', Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Live, Helmet, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, A Perfect Circle, Sevendust, Nonpoint, Seether, Disturbed, Red, System of the Down, and many more. I wonder, if Layne Staley ever got around to listen to this band. Kurt had already died, by the time this band came up. Very sad. Would've been cool to see Kurt and Layne react to all the good bands coming up.
they are not under rated, they just need to keep writing, rather than run around playing touring the SAME shit they wrote almost TWO DECADES ago!! They played here in st. Louis at Pop's saloon (it holds 300 people) and even that was not full.. If you played a guitar you'd know how simple the music is and you just CAN NOT get Aerosmith, AC/DC ratings writing 2-3 albums and play them for LIFE.. I'm sorry but I'd go open a bar somewhere and get to know my kids and stay married.. Addicted to the stage and ALL out of music has them right where they should be..I like them too,I'm here watching but they are rated ACCURATELY!! Not to mention Alternative music has a much smaller fan base than rock and roll, they NEED something NEW or they won't be playing at all soon enough, I've seen them 3 times and it was always the same!! They played at the boardwalk in Daytona beach outside w/ 20 other bands and people were leaving the stage area when they cam on.. I'd rather stay home than to watch him play Glycerine again!! you could!!
It's cool to know they put serious thought behind the lyrics instead of just getting wasted and writing whatever comes out of their mouth like some artists do. Yet another reason I love Bush.
Glycerine is a compound with a sweet taste that can be used for antiviral purposes. The song is full of contradictory references to a relationship. So clearly it is an unstable one. "Everything gone white / now everything's grey" "I'm never alone / I'm alone all the time" "I treated you bad / You bruised my face / Couldn't love you more". I think "glycerine" is a call for some sort of soothing cleanser to fix the bad in the relationship and make it all good instead of fighting and then making up over and over.
I feel like he is reflecting back, rather than feeling the true emotions of the songs he was feeling back then/. there's no sex in your violence, incredible lyric!
I interpreted the lyrics “when we rise is like a strawberry field” differently (shock!). I took it to mean that when we have our good times, when we overcome hardships, and when we rise above our baser qualities, it doesn’t last long. In other words, when we rise, it is short and sweet (strawberry plants are short and bear sweet fruit)
I love Gavin and the song "glycerine," I'm a little young for it to count as an "anthem of my youth" but it's a great song. It gives me goosebumps, the lyrics are so evocative!! Really cool to know he was influenced by Howl, I read it in college years ago and absolutely loved what Ginsberg did with words, sound, and pronunciation. =)
As I writer of poetry, I can attest that it's not always pleasant to discuss meaning of lyrics or lyrical verse, alot I like to keep hidden or left for others to derive their own meaning, with that said, it's cool that he does this and everyone gripping that he doesn't say enough about "Glycerine" ... he gave it an intro and his meaning and reason for a verse or two, just like every other song he mentioned. Geez, is nothing good enough for you! Many artists wouldn't even give you this, and rightfully so ... His music is Lovely, and heartfelt. Art in one of its most beautiful forms. Really sweet that he gave up this much, imo. 💕😎
Great band and love Glycerine. Love the lyrics the cynicism and just the whole feel of the song. It also has sentimental value because of a certain girl which cements it for me personally as one of my favorite songs.
I love the music from 'bush' as a machinist machinehead is one of my favorite songs haha, sixteen stone has to be one of my favorite albums thanks for the vid!
I wish he would break down every lyrics and songs from the first 4 albums, to us they’re just lyrics, but to understand the meaning behind those lyrics are so interesting and meaningful.
Well, glycerine (also called glycerol) is chemical used to manufacturing f.e. soaps but also it's a part of nitroglycerine used for manufacturing TNT (do you remember Figh Club)? So... it's metaphorical name for someone who do you love and the relationship is powerful like a bomb.
it's a good thing when your lyrics can't easily be understood, lyrics written today are so simple that they can be understood by dogs, sit!, fetch!, roll over! buy my shitty album!, good boy!
Yeah, the best lyrics are those that are so unique and therefore connect with everyone in different ways as everyone has their own perception on what they mean. Sometimes being vague and unclear expresses the most emotions.
I heard in another interview from the 90s, not long after sixteen Stone was released, that Gavin said he wrote the song about a girl who he said was more dangerous than Glycerine.
It seems to me like he just doesn't want to admit he was as toasted as Jim Morrison when he was writing most of this haha. No offense, love me some Bush 'n' all that.
I loved these guys when I was a teenager, then one fateful day, sitting at a coffee shop, the song Glycerine popped into my head. I looked up the definition of glycerine. After that, when I heard Bush, I couldn’t help but think of soap and heart medication. I know Gavin was thinking of the explosive compound nitro glycerin, but it ruined the song for me until I realized that in British English it DOES have an e. Thank God for that. Unfortunately, now all I can think of when I hear it, is Gwen, their three boys, nanny😥. Sometimes it’s better to not look too deep into the lives of the people who write and perform great songs I suppose.
That was great. It adds an interesting depth to songs, and elucidates meaning that i could have never guessed. To those who say it ruins the imaginary aspect-that's dependent on your view. There is no one holding you back from interpreting your own meaning
I love how they choose to have him explain the most obvious lyrics of Glycerine. Please answer the most infamous question: What do you mean by Glycerine?? Gah!
Glycerine is is the only love he has .....and he is admiting to being a drug addict and loving his oil based( Glycerine) Drug but wants it to return and he is showing humility....
great songs, definitely takes me back to the early 90s when i listen to their songs. unfortunately, the more i look into their lyrics it makes no sense to me now. oh well, still a best go-to band to go back to the 90s.
For myself, Bush is a post-punk band, Band's lyrics and music parts are caracteristics from punk rock bands and i think that because i hate this "grunge" mania and this word who defines punk rock of seattle and after the punk rock from the 90s named by the medias like i said in lots of other videos in RUclips
Gavin Rossdale Bush, you sure has a nice set of white pretty teeth! You could be Kurt Cobain's 1/2 little brother, just saying! You and Kurt Cobain has this super Angelic Beautiful Voice, eyes and Face! Gavin I just love how you and Kurt Cobain has this type of humbleness when you speaks! I wished Kurt was still here to watch you perform on stage and vice versa! Great interview Bush, you're one of the #1 all time great singer in my book!
Gavin wrote "Glycerine" after his girlfriend Jasmine and himself broke up after 5 years of dating due to his busy schedule. She was a vocalist on one of their albums and a model.
A little judgmental aren't you? It is public knowledge that Gwen Stefani's net worth trumps Gavin Rossdale's by upwards of 45 million, so yeah, I'm thinking she stays because she wants to. She had an extremely public break up b4 did a whole album on it. I don't know either one of them personally and I don't have any right to judge. FYI, every one of us has a past. Maybe Gwen convinced him he was on the wrong team. They sure do make some wicked awesome music. ♥ them & their combined talent.
He talks about Machinehead but either he or the editor leaves out the explanation of the most alarming of all the lyrics in the song: "Blood is like wine" and "unconscious all the time"
I liked this video muchly. And I don't care if he's gay, straight, bi, tri, or wants to sleep with the fishes. It's music, not marriage. Damn good music from a distinct talented man with a gravel voice and an angel's face.
Never worried about Lyrics for most songs I listen to....if it jams and rocks with great guitar and stuff, I just jam to the music...I never tried to understand Lyrics from Bush although I thought it was always cause it was just stuff thrown together, never made any sense to me so I just jammed to the songs...I do that to a lot of music...
No you are not the only one signing your life away....just look at Prince's actions in the 90's against Warner Brothers...he was the pioneer on things like that, he was the first to speak out about signing contracts...youngsters these days should take note
lol, that brings up my question. What is this lyric? "bad mood wine again" "bad moon white again" or "black moon white again". Everyone seems to have different versions of it. What's the damn real one?!?!?
is it me, or does 'The Sound of Winter" sound like Bush's earlier song from Razor Blade Suitcase, Insect Kin. I believe is he name of the song. its way way to similar. decent songs. i LOVE insect kin... but i feel this is a riff off of that.
Amazing, I learned so much in that segment of time than I have ever learned from the early nineties. Makes me love and care for them even more than I ever have before. Thank you! I love that band, brings back old childhood memories I'll never forget.
I can only agree that music as same as art is ever changing and personal to everyone at the moment they heard or saw. As you age in my case I hear it differently but that's because we never stop learning or experiencing in my opinion and the world I grew up in and still growing in. Take care
I don't want to make assumptions because I know a few bands that claim they write their lyrics, but really don't, so if they do write their own shit they deserve to be here. The rest need to go.
the song "glycerine" ? it's about the passage of time , "i coulda been much easier on you " refers to the body and the amount of self abuse when youre young , and how you know you should ease up but just don't , and when you get older and have bowel trouble as a result ,well , that's what glycerine is for , see , it's about time after all !
Seeing Gavin Rossdale sing Glycerine in the pouring rain on MTV may be the last great iconic moment of grunge -- its swan song, if you will. cliffo70 That's an interesting theory. I hadn't thought of that - I wonder indeed what impact or reaction their music would have caused.
I love when he said that if he had been electrocuted it would have been a romantic way to die
That was a hot performance. The rain...his voice........gawd!!
Glycerine is AWESOME FUCKING SONG!!! My go-to song if I am feeling down or feeling nostalgic in any way!
Favorite lyric/verse:
"I'm never alone. I'm alone all the time. Are you at one or do you lie? We live in a wheel. Where everyone steals, but when we rise it's like strawberry fields."

Bush is so under rated

Such an awesome singer songwriter. One of the all time greats.

I wish he would break down every lyrics and songs from the first 4 albums, to us they’re just lyrics, but to understand the meaning behind those lyrics are so interesting and meaningful.
Really enjoyed watching this and understanding his thought process behind some of these fantastic lyrics.
He talks about everything EXCEPT Glycerine which gets a lame comment on the Beatles reference... Why you wrote "explains Glycerine" is beyond me.
You dont need to find meaning for songs just listen and if thats what the song is about then thats it
Well, glycerine (also called glycerol) is chemical used to manufacturing f.e. soaps but also it's a part of nitroglycerine used for manufacturing TNT (do you remember Figh Club)? So... it's metaphorical name for someone who do you love and the relationship is powerful like a bomb.
@Patrik, of course you just made that up as a guess. We're curious about why _he_ chose it for his song.
Glycerine or glycerin actually comes from the greek word glukeros which means "sweet".
Trondyne don’t tell me that.
That's so generous of him to break down his art like that

Love this fucking band!!!!
Always loved Gavin

Bonus question... What's her name!
It starts with an S
Just saw them on Monday in Toronto great concert

Glycerine is definitely one of the great drunken self-pity songs.

(Nitro) Glycerine is dangerous. Some people are dangerous to us. He talked about it on Howard once.
Right. But what if the explanation is that it was just a stupid word he inserted
I am blinded by the beauty of this man's hairline.

Too short. Not good enough. I NEED MORE!!! He writes such great lyrics!!!
They'll be recording in September.
Some of the most touching lyric Id ever heard, Glycerine

when is he coming out with a new album?
maybe glycerine was a nickname for the girl, cause glycerine is sweetener, that can sweeten anything.
hello Lol. I agree.
any fatty solid your thinkin the version glycol .....glycerine oil based like margerine
Love the background behind the lyrics

kenstr321 think its bad mood whine again. pretty sure it is anyways...
TheSteve McInnes I just ask cause the lyrics I've looked up all seem to have diffrent one's on some verses, just like a solid answer you know?
It’s “bad moon white again.”
I’m guessing he’s referencing this line from the first chorus: “everything’s gone white, and everything’s grey”
Light that fuse.
is it me, or does 'The Sound of Winter" sound like Bush's earlier song from Razor Blade Suitcase, Insect Kin. I believe is he name of the song. its way way to similar. decent songs. i LOVE insect kin... but i feel this is a riff off of that.
ha, I was just listening to Razor Blade Suitcase the other day and thought the same thing.
I enjoyed this.
he is one of the last few actual lyricists left. just check out the garbage they play on radios now
is a sweetener used in wines and such
Whats the meaning of Glycerine?
Amazing, I learned so much in that segment of time than I have ever learned from the early nineties. Makes me love and care for them even more than I ever have before. Thank you! I love that band, brings back old childhood memories I'll never forget.
I never understood the lyric "Bad moon white again." Anyone know?
I have no idea, Johnny😄
Feel sorry for gwen
interesting stuff!
Glycerine is definitely one of the great drunken self-pity songs.
I can only agree that music as same as art is ever changing and personal to everyone at the moment they heard or saw. As you age in my case I hear it differently but that's because we never stop learning or experiencing in my opinion and the world I grew up in and still growing in. Take care
Don’t let the days go by really hits me
Second only to Creep 😂😂
A lot of Bush's lyrics are rather like DaDaist poetry to me, extremely visual as well
Stefani :)
Gavin u r alive
agreed...but he's a nice guy... love them...not many left, I got one though.
Glycerine @ 2:50
I don't want to make assumptions because I know a few bands that claim they write their lyrics, but really don't, so if they do write their own shit they deserve to be here. The rest need to go.
the song "glycerine" ? it's about the passage of time , "i coulda been much easier on you " refers to the body and the amount of self abuse when youre young , and how you know you should ease up but just don't , and when you get older and have bowel trouble as a result ,well , that's what glycerine is for , see , it's about time after all !
Dude stop arguing. Just love the music please
I didnt get the glycerine what?....c'mon!
welcome back to the mxq project, my name is maffew
Ginsberg was the muse. I would have never guessed the beat generation was an influence.....
