The United States is a democracy which means that citizens vote to choose their leaders and to make some decisions about laws in their city, state, or the country. People over age 18 who are US citizens and have not committed certain crimes have the right to vote in US elections. Today we will talk about the basic information you need to know about elections in the US.

    Types of Elections
In the US, elections can be local, state, or national. A local election is to choose a representative from your neighborhood to be on a city or county council or other local positions like the mayor, city attorney, treasurer, and judges. There are state elections to choose representatives for your district to meet at your state capital or to represent your district or the whole state in Washington DC. There are also state positions like the governor, judges, and the attorney general. The president is the only elected office that all Americans vote for.
    Political Parties
The two major political parties in the US are the Republicans and Democrats. Republicans use the color red and their symbol is an elephant. Democrats use the color blue and their symbol is a donkey. People who do not support the Republicans or Democrats are called Independents. There can be other political parties as well, but they are much smaller.
    What are Primaries?
The Republicans and Democrats hold primary elections. A primary is when voters choose who will be the candidate for the party. A candidate is the person running for office. Some primaries are open, meaning voters can vote in the primary for Democrats or Republicans. Other primaries are closed, meaning you need to be a registered member of a political party to vote.
    What is a General Election?
Candidates who win the primary will represent their party in the general election. A general election is a few months after the primary. It will have one candidate from the two major political parties, plus there could be candidates from smaller parties. Many general elections in the US are the first Tuesday in November. The biggest general election is when it is a presidential election year, like 2024. We elect a president every 4 years. The person who wins the general election will be the newly elected government official after they are sworn into office.
