  • In this episode, I’m excited to explore the benefits and properties of California poppy with Benjamin Zappin, one of my first ever herb teachers down at the East West School of Herbology in California.
When might you reach for California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)? Among other things, it’s a wonderful herb to support sleep, relaxation, and emotional quiet. (Know anybody who could use more of those things in their life?) ;)
There’s a lot more to know about this beautiful plant, though, so be sure to listen in to the entire episode for all the details, including a recipe from Benjamin for a California Poppy Tincture. (By the way, don’t miss downloading your beautifully illustrated recipe card!)
Besides celebrating the gifts of the beautiful California poppy, Benjamin also shares a wealth of general herbal advice about dosage and formulation. When I hear “herbal formulation,” in my mind, there’s Benjamin Zappin. So I’m really excited to share this conversation with you.
By the end of this episode, you’ll know:
► Which parts of California poppy are most potent and whether to make medicine with the fresh or dried plant
► How to work with California poppy for sleep, anxiety, and pain relief (including what types of pain or discomfort may be helped by it)
► How to grow California poppy in your own garden so wild stands are left alone
► How to gain an understanding of the building blocks of herbal formulation
    ► and so much more…
For those of you who don’t already know him, Benjamin Zappin is an herbalist and licensed acupuncturist with over 25 years of clinical experience. He co-founded Five Flavors Herbs with his wife, Ingrid Bauer, to provide their community with exceptional herbal finished products and custom herbal formulas. Benjamin offers integrative herbal consultations through Paeonia Integrative Medicine. In his free time, you’ll find Benjamin cooking and studying music.
I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it!

I got my brother in law off his ambien using CA Poppy tincture. His insomnia is, I believe, related to PTSD from the war. Now my whole family uses it for sleep!

I was so excited to see this! I've been making CA poppy tincture for my clients since last summer and they LOVE it for sleep & relaxation. 🧡🌿 I'm also surprised why it's not as well known - it's gentle but effective! The reason I started doing this was kind of funny. I had neglected my garden last year to the point where I was afraid to go check on it (it's a community garden on the other side of my townhome complex). Sure enough, all the vegetables I'd planted were dead. But in their place I had TONS of california poppy and lemon balm. I feel like it was a divine gift! I harvested all of it for tinctures. Both have been my favorites every since. 😀

Always have Loved these Poppies and used to have them in the front Garden where I lived with my Husband and our Three Sons when they were growing up...in Chelmsford around 30 miles away from London, UK
I remember my middle Son used to love collecting the seed pods when they were dry and playing whilst sitting on his trike. I knew they had medisenal properties but not to the extent that I now have just learnt. That time was nearly 30 years ago....
Where I live now is a terrace house with a Courtyard Garden...in Brightlingsea however I do have a plot on an Allotment to make into my own Garden through this coming year. Herbs and Poppies will definitely be part of it. Many Thanks Rosalee ☺

Rosalee, you always seem to post these beautiful videos at the exact time I need them. I was calling my gp to ask to about anxiety medication. Being in a toxic unhealthy relationship has really disregulated me and I need that extra boost to work my way out of it. Instead of starting off with the anxiety medication, I am going to try California poppy. Thank you so much and please know howbmany people you help! ❤

Rosalee, hello!! I am a novice when it comes to herbalism. This was very interesting. I can now add Poppy's to my garden. I would love to find out how Poppy can help with dementia. Thank you for bringing such a wide diversity of herbal medicine.

When you say a full dropper full, is that a literal full dropper or the amount that fills the dropper when the bulb is fully squeezed and fluid drawn in?

Good question! I honestly think this can mean something different to different people. In my experience it's anywhere between 30-60 drops. It's always best to start low and slowly increase to find the desired dose.

I was told it's easy to cause bacteria with glycerine. Also not as long shelf life.

It's true that you need to pay special attention when making glycerites. They can be made well. But they will never have the shelf life of an alcohol extract.

why did my poppy tincture not help me sleep, it did take my pain away pretty much instantly felt my tmj relax along with all my other body pain but my mind was racing and not relaxed so had to take a melatonin. I took half a dropper.

So glad to hear the California poppy tincture helped you with your body pain. That's great! As to why it didn't help you sleep, there could be at least ten reasons. The first being that perhaps it's not the right herb for you. Not all herbs work the same for everyone. Other reasons could include that the tincture wasn't well made, that you didn't take enough (or possibly you took too much). It could be that you have a magnesium deficiency so poppy wasn't addressing that... and on and on and on. Which is why I always think it's best to work directly with a practitioner. You might also like the episode I did in December with Tammi Sweet which is specifically about sleep and she talks about the importance of dosage in that episode (super helpful).

Thank you for the reply. I did make the tincture myself in 2019 just haven't been brave enough to use it until watching your podcast. and i probably do have a magnesium deficiency and have been wanting to purchase a good quality.. I am deficient in VitaminD so take a d3 everyday when I remember and just found out you're supposed to be taking a k2 with it? when i'm able to I do eat Natto but it's hard to find so can't say I get enough k2 either. I'll watch that episode today! thanks again. Wish I could work with Benjamin for my social phobia/panic disorder..he mentioned that he works a lot with people with mental health issues. For now i'm very grateful to you! and all the information you share. @@HerbsWithRosalee

Question :D I have "Watermelon Heaven" Poppies and I am wondering if they can be used in the same way as the orange ones. They are identified as a California Poppy.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. The key to knowing if you can use other versions of plants is to know the botanical names of both. The California poppy we use in herbalism is Eschscholzia californica. It is hard to know if hybrid versions will have the same herbal constituents and which ones. There really isn't much data or traditional use for many hybrids.
      Warmly,
      Karin Rose
