    Thank you for this video. I have lots of C. poppy in my garden and am overjoyed to discover they have medicinal properties. One question: What's the dose? I heard 5 to 10 drops. Is that about a half teaspoon?

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Год назад +2

      Thank you for watching ❤️🌱❤️ Dosage is very individual, so it’ll be different for everyone. It’ll depend on what form of medicine, your individual situation, contraindications etc. It would not be ethical for me to make suggestions without knowing the full picture as this would be prescribing in the same manner as allopathic medicine. Which is very unlikely to be beneficial.
      Do your research on contraindications and start small and work up from there. I have prescribed 1/2 a teaspoon for patients and they have had benefits and others have had up to four teaspoons a day before feeling benefits. But I would never advise either of these dosages without speaking to you and knowing your situation and possible contraindications.
      I hope you understand and it makes sense to you. This video may explain it in a different way:

      @@salenawalker That's great info, thank you. I was planning on starting with a half teaspoon, then waiting to see the effects. I'll check out contraindications online. One more question, if you please. After 6 to 8 weeks, do I leave the plant in the tincture, or strain it out? Thanks again!

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Год назад +1

      @@JL-ze5qm You can strain the plant out after 6-8 weeks as the liquid is then your tincture and the plant has been fully brewed.

    Hi
    Why haven't you used the root as well to use the whole plant? I always use the whole plant of cali poppy, just wondering why you don't , I'm interested in your opinion as to why you don't take some root as well. Looking forward to your reply, thanks. Luv your video, thanks and the fact that your in the uk, as I am, although I'm way down south so not near you unfortunately.

      I was taught to use the aerial parts so I have never explored the root. But also if I take the root I only have one harvest, but because I just take the aerial parts I can get quite a few cuttings from one small patch as they keep blooming back. In the summer most of the energy and medicine would be in the aerial parts, as that is where the growing energy is going. So that is another reason for me just using the aerial part. If I make root medicine I always make it in Autumn / Winter as that is when the medicine and energy is in the root. Hope that is helpful for you and thank you for watching 🌱❤️🌱

    Have never experienced someone referencing the gender of a plant every 2 seconds before.. 😅.. Even if we grow these wonderful things and they are gendered by us it is still a bit strange.. Be like someone with a tobacco growing video constantly referring to his cigarettes as men.
    Great video very informational.

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  4 месяца назад

      Some people choose to refer to plants with genders and in fact many plants do have different genders. I am generally referring to the energetic feel of the plant and when I describe a plant as an it, somehow it just doesn't feel right. So I sometimes refer to the feminine or masculine energy in my videos and many, many folk beliefs would look at plants as masculine or feminine. In my native language Welsh all nouns are masculine or feminine. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment as it is always good to look at things ❤️

    The stems have a thicker part on mine which has a milky substance. Latex? Do you use that in your tincture?

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Месяц назад

      California Poppy does contain latex so avoid if you have a latex allergy. There can be varying degrees of thickness in the stem but as I always say to my students double check you are 100% on the plant ID before using for medicine. Happy medicine making ❤️🌱❤️

      Thank you for being here and welcome to the gardening club. It's fantastic that you have the beautiful red poppies growing and you are thinking of making medicine from them. California poppy is a member of the same family as red poppy.
      I am sorry I am unable to offer one to one advice and one to one herbal medicine dosage. As a naturopath to create a treatment plan including dosages of herbal medicine I access the whole picture looking at current symptoms from head to toe including physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms. I also explore the clients external world to be able to understand their internal world at cellular level. To be able to give you advice I would also need to know what your current diet, hydration you consume and details of any medications you take as there could be contraindications. This process takes an hour and half in my consultation and results in me being able to give the client a personal prescription that works with the body not against the body. Focusing on hydration, food, purposeful supplementation / herbal medicine and naturopathic techniques.
      It would not be ethical for me to make suggestions without knowing the full picture as this would be prescribing in the same manner as allopathic medicine. Which is very unlikely to be beneficial.
      I hope you understand and it makes sense to you. This video may explain it in a different way:

    Is the mission bell poppy safe to use for a tincture? There are many different varieties, are they all the same?

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Год назад

      I always work with the non hybrid varieties just Eschscholzia californica. I have never experimented with the mission bell variety so I couldn’t advice you. Usually in herbal medicine you are best NOT working with the non-hybrid, highly bred varieties and working with the plant in its most wild/pure form ❤️🌱❤️

    actually as for the latex allergy warning, it is not the same latex in this medicine as there is in latex the material

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Год назад

      Yes it is if a different latex but in some people that have a material latex allergy they react to latex in the plants as well. So I have to mention this contraindication ❤️🌱❤️

    Can you tell me why you don't wash or rinse the herbs before you put them in a jar?

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  Год назад +1

      This will add water to the herbs and dilute the alcohol and it will mean the herbs will be full of water so the alcohol won’t soak in and pull out the medicine as well. It’s one of the reasons that I try not to collect herbs after rain. As they will be full of water.

      @salenawalker if you are not using 100% Alcohol there is water, not sure what alkaloids you can extract with cold water but it might actually be useful

    Can you talk about how you use this tincture?

    • @salenawalker
      @salenawalker  2 года назад

      By usage I’m assuming you mean dosage. Dosage is personal and depends very much on a case by case basis and what you are taking it for. In general herbalists say twenty drops twice a day but in clinic I will prescribe anything from five drops a day up to one teaspoon four times a day depending on the person and the treatment.
