- What do you do with a fifteen-year-old MMORPG based on a science fiction franchise fewer and fewer people find especially cool? Furthermore, what do you do with it on a modern gaming console, such as the Xbox Series X? This is Star Trek Online in 2025. To play or not to play, that is the question! Thanks for watching, guys. 🖖😁

For an unpopular game theres a lot of people in game when you go to the hubs. I just decided to dip back in after 10 years and its still fun, stiff mechanics and all. Do wish they'd fix the ship powers tray issue
Yup, it's a stiff old bird. But I still love it. It's a unique Trek experience. One of a kind. 🙂
@JeffBowlesCentralEntertainment honestly, I got into it after the whole ME3 debacle, I missed the ground combat and although STO's plays and controls very differently it looks like it and it's fun even though clunky
awesome video i would like to see more star trek on console videos
Sure. I will take that under emphatic advisement. 🙂
I love and play this game regularly. I was one of those and splurged and bought the lifetime subscription (it was on sale for $200). That was over a dozen years ago so its kina already "paid for itself". I do get bored with it, stop playing for a while and then always come back. Its a pretty extensive game and I can see where new players would have a hard time figuring it all out.
I was away for eight years. Hell, it's so extensive I have a hard time figuring it all out. 😆
I play this game now and then it’s currently my connection to Star Trek. I’ve been a fan since I was 12yrs old now 43 it can get boring to a degree but I’m always coming back to it. The ship battles are my favourite part of the game. Sovereign class is my favourite ship uss sovereign ncc-73811 armed the same as enterprise E from the movies.
Sovereign loving here myself. Absolutely agree on your statement.
Star Trek online is super cool. I played it for for 10 yrs. I'm level 65 and I still play it occasionaly because it's fun and occassionally visit the mudd market for new weapons. Thank you for this video.
@@jbs7799 Sure, man. Thanks for dropping the comment. 🙂
Okay, I just started playing this game. I grew up with TOS and I remember when a cereal company was running a contest for kids to win an appearance in the TNG premiere. Yes its not the greatest mmo, but it is free and I was able to get it to run on my linux computer through Steam.
wish i had seen this when you posted it but no im a month late... my bad.
ive played STO from about an hour after it went free to play, not continuously but on and off. i used to be part of a great fleet and we were pretty active at the time running daily missions and PVP (ground and space but mostly ground). it was decided that the fleet would go "Evil" for 1 week, best thing we ever did but i will explain. what it meant was we were using every exploit and trick we could think of in PVP ground for the whole week. for me been a Caitian Ground Sci officer that meant mostly healing but i used crouch as much as possible for max dodge chance and i ran with a sword and a gun as a secondary weapon (swords had a massive knock back chance at that time and was not looked at as been... lets say honourable). Other players used anything else that was in the game but a few used a sword every now and then. The PVP queue's were hot like they had never been before, everyone wanted to kill us. we even extended the week when people asked us to keep it going.
Sadly the worst thing about STO was bugs and changes that meant it wasn't fair on existing players and a lot of people left for other games. the game can be solo played to a point but you do need groups and thats often when it can suck but when your in a good group having fun its still an awesome game
Still playing every day after 15 years. And yes, I played and enjoyed Resurgence.
I play this everyday. It gives me a pleasant escape from reality for an hour or so.
Love this game. On almost ever day.
I just like that the main plot goes beyond Nemesis. That is something CBS seems scared to do, so instead they go back and break the existing lore.
Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Picard are all post Nemesis. Discovery from Season 3 onward is in the far future.
@@moviemaniacdjp With CBS throwing discovery to non canon, I think that'll be the fate of most of those shows, plus two of those are animated. Picard was a mess, season 3 was nice, but does that really make up for the awful?
@CondemnedInformer discovery is still canon bro
@CondemnedInformer I agree Picard was a mess. But you claimed that CBS doesn't make any Star Trek post Nemesis. I was just giving examples of they do.
@@moviemaniacdjp Fair, hopefully we get much better in the future, but under this CBS, unlikely.
The clunky ground experience comes from the original skin job that Star Trek Online was .
The developer studio (Cryptic) purchased the rights for a Star Trek MMO from a different studio that tried and failed to make a Trek MMO for about 2 years (1.8 years) .
MMO's have a 4-6 years development time, and Cryptic purchased those rights with an additional 2+ years deadline on the rights .
Sooo ... Cryptic kinda sorta re-skinned another MMO that they had in development (Champions Online) , that was an improvement on a previous MMO Cryptic released in 2004 (City of Heroes) .
So essentially at the bottom of Star Trek Online runs a proprietary engine RELEASED in 2004 .
In the 2+ years that Cryptic had, they built a pretty decent 3D space combat onto that engine, and that, along with a very old ground combat system is Star Trek Online .
A quite fun game, especially if you're into retro gaming .
But as to what's under the hood ... -- Cryptic has been fighting / updating that for a very long time, with varying success .
Visually it's quite nice (if by now over saturated with FX .
Ground combat is ... improved , but unlike Space combat, ground is locked into that early 2000's mechanics (for good & bad) .
And you were right about the somewhat miraculous survival of this game .
Cryptic got sold 3 times in the last 15 years of the game, and each of those sales could have ended the game, even as the game itself was usually modesty profitable, with a somewhat fanatic player base .
For some of us who have been there from the beginning, it's a part of life (even when we each have a laundry list of things to be upset about) .
1960-1990's Star Trek was some of the best sci-fi TV for it's time, and many of the Devs are and were clearly fans who gave a damn .
@Robotrik1 - Thanks for all this info. Excellent context, really helpful for the conversation. I too always got the sense the game was developed for diehard Trek fans by diehard Trek fans. Which to me is really special. We're a somewhat unique breed of sci-fi fan, lol. 🙂
Star Trek Resurgence was pretty awesome. I think my favorite Star Trek game ever will always be Judgement Rites.
I love this game as well. But I do have my wish list for the game. One is that I wish there was gameplay in your own ship. Think of how many episodes in Star Trek took place on the ship with the crew. It would add so much more immersion and that's what I really want: immersion. I also wish there was more end game play. The veterans have gotten so good and so powerful that PvE instances just fly by with no challenge. And PvE queues is one of the few things one can do as a vet player. They need to add another element beyond what they have. Maybe the ability to retire and become a merchant, or a mercenary, or a pirate, or a thief even. All those things involving the civilian life of the Universe are missing and they would add so much. Maybe one could travel to Orion for such things if of the Klingon faction, and the Ferengi homeward if you are of the Ferengi faction.
it is surprisingly fun - when doing space battles
ground battles - eh
the stories (arcs) with ACTUAL star trek actors are so good, they are considered LORE at this point. Yes, Nerys and Odo get a resolution in this game. And it is epic.
Some truly excellent guest stars, it's true, a couple of whom are no longer with us. Which makes their performances in this game precious, really. 🙂
@@JeffBowlesCentralEntertainment Basically this game is a gigantic nostalgia trip for boomers.
Incredibly, said boomers pay literally hundreds of dollars per year to fly their favorite ships, or even buy one ship for its trait (10% more bonus beam damage - buy this ship, sale, only $60).
This game is absolutely amazing. Make sure to mention in your video that it's free, as that's a major advantage! Personally, I've found my refuge in this unique game that captivates you and keeps you hooked for decades to come. And I'm saying all this as a true and passionate Trekkie."
It's a good game to return to every now and then for a Star Trek fix. I've played on and off since 2011 or so, still semi-actively now. Would I recommend it to anyone seeking an MMO rather than seeking Trek? No. It's catered to and kept alive by Trekkies for a reason.
It needs an update so it's on par with the PC version. I want to be able to read the name and registery number on my ship i paid money for, not just see a pixelated mess. Same goes for uniforms and character models, they're all low resolution and it looks terrible.
I'm literally playing it right now.
I did not know this game even existed. I wish there was a modern Star Trek game with an expansive story :D Heck, I wouldn't even mind a Telltale-esk game!
There's one called Star Trek Resurgence.
It wasn’t received very well because a new company took over development early on and changed what it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be an actual multiplayer simulation type game with ship interiors etc and full multiplayer crews and much more. Pretty much a virtual version of the Star Trek universe as we’ve seen on tv/movies. Instead it was changed to this.
The graphics have improved over the years. In particular with the space combat. The space combat is what got me hooked on PC back in the day. These days i just play on ps5. The space combat on that looks pretty damn food. Better then i am seeing in your video lol.
Its fun its buggy. Been in there since the beginning off and on. I keep going back to it.
The most recent trait-losing bug (it happened before countless times) got me over the edge, I just couldn't get myself over spending days again to retrait all my characters. So after 15 long years since headstart (lifer since day one), I decided to uninstall STO ... but it was a great journey.
The devs announced they're working on a fix, should be out today along with a free Tier 6 Pathfinder for a limited time (you can reskin it to Voyager)
@@MrMe-lf2ov Tomorrow. But yeah, it took way too long for a major bug fix.
STO really needs a true Next Gen update to reflect not only canon changes(SNW TOS/Discovery 31st Century eras) but new ways to experience gameplay(Bridge Command, more use of ship-based resources in mission gameplay, off-hands away teams, shuttle space/atmo flight, ect..) Sadly, Dekka taking over the maintenance/updates has taken that off the cards..
I would love all this stuff. Truly. Especially a Strange New Worlds update. A next-gen STO would thrill me to no end.
those are NOT canon
I still love this game. I have a history of getting burned out and coming back to it.
For sure. I never really expected to play it again, but I'm glad I have been. 🙂
My PC makes it look great and PRETTY
I’ve been a casual Trek fan most of my life, growing up with a Mom who was a massive Trekkie (watched ToS when she was growing up overseas in Thailand and Ethiopia), and for whatever reason my Trekkie-Dom exploded about a year ago. I think it was the purchase of Star Trek Infinite that started me into mass Trek consumption. Anyway back on topic, fired up STO on PS5 and am absolutely loving it. Old school WoW combat with accessible ship battles, and seemingly endless content. Hell yeah!
Having trouble with that game. I am stuck on a mission where I have to get a shuttle to transport someone. I have no idea how to get it and do the mission to go forward in the game.
Also, resurgence is more of a story game more than a gameplay game.
Ah, that sounds like a real head-scratcher. You're right, Resurgence leans a bit more heavily on story, which is what I love about it. Cool game, that one. 😎🖖
when you beam into ESD/earth space dock/sol system, youll be on the transporter pad looking almost straight at the Exchange on the far off wall in front of you.
run down the ramp, stay curvy and head sort of to the middle,
Just before/AT the Giant Circle on the floor look left at the Small hallway on Left, take that down to the shuttle bay :) and get your shuttle.
if you are klingon,go to the space station SHIPYARDS,which is Past the klingon station lol nice trick there.
that place is tiny the shuttle guy is left of the ship guy standing by the station windows :)
Cheers !!
STO is a fairly lame game, but dripping with fan service. So if you're into Trek (like an awful lot of us are, TYVM), it's a decent romp. Also, almost all of the content can be played single player without joining a Fleet/clan. As an anti-social gamer, I appreciate that.
Though, I do wish the PS4/5 version of the game wasn't so awful. The graphics are vastly *worse* than in the PC version, and if your screencaps are from the XBox version, its graphics are way better, too.
Yup, screen captures are from the latest Xbox Series X build.
@JeffBowlesCentralEntertainment Wow, I'm getting really screwed with the Playstation version then. The graphics are awful and filled with bugs. :-) I only check in every so often for new single player fan service content, but have otherwise moved on.
Absolutly fav
I love the idea of this game but you might as well be controlling a brick as you move around the world
I'm still gonna play it 😂
It has more people playing than the series sponsored by Alex Kurtzman have viewers.
Lol
Kind of a shame, too. Some of those shows have had some good moments. Here and there. 🙂
For me it's just not... fun, not anymore.
I've been playing STO for the past 13 years, the moment it went F2p I instantly hopped on and I was hooked mostly because I'm a die hard trekkie.
Right now the game doesn't have any reedeming qualities other than making cool ships and the occasional Trek Celebrity Cameo.
In my opinion, lockboxes ruined the game (but I do understand those are necessary to keep the studio alive) and there's nothing much else to do other than the current TFOs for the month's event or... anything else really, Space Barbie maybe?
Your character (and ship) build depends heavily on what paid product you can get. Yes, there are budget builds but most of the Meta Stuff is locked behind a past Event, Lockbox or Paywall.
The Dil exchange is dead, you cannot exchange Dil for Zen anymore, which makes it impossible not to spend a dime on the game if you miss some days off the event grind.
The System which allowed the players to make custom made stories is also dead and the game runs on an extremely old engine where the UI makes the game slow as hell sometimes.
Gameplay too, it has become incredibly stagnant. I often just run around a target without any strategy and just... blow it up. I'm not really expecting Starfleet Command levels of dept here but I would love them to focus a little bit more on rebuilding the gameplay somehow.
Also the visual noise has become something unbearable.
I can't suggest this game to anyone really, but it's really hard for me to give it away due to FOMO and because it's basically the only trek game right now.
love this game but dont bother playing on the klingon side lol all new ships are just reskins of federation ships, no on plays klingons, and if you play an engineer youll notice your turrets only last less than 30 seconds not the 60 the timer says. if you file a bug report they just say they are aware of the issue lmao which has been around for 15 years. so they dont care
This MMO has been dead for over a year. Dill market has a 2½ month wait, all ingame currency worthless. DECS destroyed it. No reason to log in anymore.
I wouldn't say dead I just found out about this game last week and I can't stop playing. I think it's cool.
@@nathienlhardin138 I would say dead and ROTTING compared to all 15 years previous. Dil even more worthless than this time last year. More bugs. About HALF as many releases to earn or buy. No, I am still right after all. They could NOT suck for 2025, but it looks very unlikely.
