      Doug great job except for one thing that is bothering me, l don't know what its called but yall need one. Tow trucks have them we had them at the house moving outfit. When cabling that much weight you need a cable cover incase the cable breaks it takes the cable to the ground, and it keeps the cable from doing the whip effect. It should be at least 4 feet by 3 feet a weighted with something to pull it towards the ground. Also the cable crimps that hold the hook on will pull out after time. Saw a video were guy was winching his jeep out of a situation, the cable let loose at the crimped hook, and his jeep went backwards for 200feet and you know the rest of the story. Be safe ✌🐓🤘🖖😎 one more thing put a long roller on the back of the trailer for help getting it to move better.

      Kenny said right, use a snatch block to increase the capacity of the winch in two ways. The snatch block doubles the line pull and that leave less cable on the drum. that prevent your professional windup knots and the smaller number of cable wraps on the drum increases the power of the winch.

  • @kennybaughman5032

    Use a snatch block and double the winch line then the winch will pull double its weight and the winch pulls easier

      Double the winch line it doubles the pull but not the strength of the cable i run winch truck and I'm not going to pretend to know it all but its a great way to break a cable and take out a window or loose a limb on bigger winches its a great way to help but on the smaller winches the safety buffer is much less meaning that if its a 1000lbs winch the cable is 1000 lbs pull it will break at 2000 so when you double the cable its still only rated for 2000 now you are going to break something

    Hey Doug, word of caution when milling yard trees. They can have a lot of metal in them you can't see. Everything from nails and fence wire to bullets and BBs. The tree just grows around those things over time without a trace until you hit them with a saw. I'm not sure about oaks, softwoods will have a grey stain around the metal but by the time you see that it might be too late. A metal detector might be a good investment.

      @@rkorsberg I have done it before.. but not for the purposes that you might expect.
      I am an electrical contractor and rather than use a traditional wire Tugger. I use an electric cable winch and bolt it to the floor in commercial construction. It is a little crude compared to the fancy wire-pullers available on the market but over the years it's proven cheap and reliable. I started doing it that way, in the beginning, purely to keep the cost down but through the years we now own the large pulleys necessary to redirect the force, when necessary.. and it just is the way we do it

    Old Idaho suggestion. Set a pipe under that tree when you get it onto the trailer bed. It'll roll. Also a mechanical advantage is the block & tackle system which multiplies the force applied which will save your wench. I'm not a know-it-all, just I've been around Old Idaho house movers who moved a complete house and set it down with teams of mules and specially built tags. The pulley's must be rated for your loads. The pipe aught to be a thick walled pipe too. Now you know everything I do in just 3 minutes. :) Good luck Doug! I love that trailer!

  • @theluckybeaver
    @theluckybeaver 5 лет назад

    Snatch block is your best friend when winching doubles your pulling power and you’ll have less line on the winch so you won’t bind up as much you can also redirect with it so your cable isn’t all pulled to one side of the winch

    Wow, 5:45 - I though you guys were thinking you could drag that third log home. Glad I was wrong and you were just lining it up with the trailer. That regroup frame you made sure did a nice job helping the log onto the trailer. A few tweaks like the roller bars you used and I think you'll have this log trailer thing down. The winch you have is messed up. Now the cable is kinked it will never hold the rated weight. You'll need a new cable or replace the winch again. Trick with winch cables is never let the tension go completely. If there is no tension the cable can slide off the spool, and bind up. Kinda like an open face fishing reel and getting a birds nest. You really should drape something heavy, like chains or mats, on those cables when you winch. That way the weight on the cables will help keep tension and if it pops the weight will keep the cable from whipping back towards you and causing injury.
    Stay Safe

    I use used motor oil to grease my trailer bed & also use some round limb wood maybe 2 or 3 feet long to place under log as it comes into trailer bed, it helps it roll in and get chain out from under log too. Having an arch built put on my 14 ft trailer in the morning.

    Hay Doug n Stacy - enjoy your vids.. couple tricks when moving large logs wrap the winch wire three or four times around the log and roll rather than drag to the position you want (works loading the Saw mill as well) and on the last roll place a small log or 2 inch steel pipe at 90 degrees to the log this will lift the log up and take the log out the dirt reducing loading on the winch when you spin it through 90 before loading - if you can't roll it out - use a steel side from a washing machine, car bonnet or boot lid as a skid at the front to prevent it digging in. have fun ps on the winch try forcing the cable to wire wrap tidily using a dolly to keep it in line, because if the cable crosses over not only will it weaken the cable but reduces capacity of the drum = have fun.... the winch problem you had is probably you hadn't pre stretched the cable by adding a high load and then rewinding under load it this will prevent it uncoiling if done properly

    Keep tension on the winch wire and it will not bird nest (unwind on the spool). When it does bird nest you have to empty the spool and wind wire back on to spool.
