    There's an additional attribute here that can help cover the gaps when we're playing Bellingham higher to support Kane. When Luke shaw is back there's the perfect setup to play between the standard 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3 with either John Stones stepping into a 6 role or Luke Shaw inverting when we're going forward. Kalvin Philips isnt the answer alongside Rice though. Id be using TAA to help us move forward in those transitional moments. Honestly, england have never had the ability to be this tactically flexible and fluid. Southgate just has to take advantage of all the options

    I've been following England since Euro 96 when I was 4 years old. It was the first tournament I was alive to watch. I learned long ago to expect nothing from England, but now we're decent again I am hopeful, but still expect nothing. It's better this way, it doesn't hurt so much when the inevitable happens. But now, I want us to win so badly not for patriotism or pride, just so we can rub it in the rest of the worlds face and annoy the hell out of them like they annoy us.

    Making this mistake of focusing on one player. Gascoigne, Beckham, rooney .We have as England keep putting our faith in the one superstar and keep forgetting it’s a team game. It frustrates me like hell. We hold it up and then sit and gasp at every tackle in case they get injured. Matches are won by teams and how teams are set up far more than individuals

      We keep making the mistake of not focusing on one player enough.
      Gazza is truly one of England's greatest but his best achievement is an FA cup. He can't carry this whole nation.
      Beckham was a crosser with no target men. Even playing him with Crouch more would've been more fruitful. Shearer retired too quickly...
      Rooney -just like owen, was classic "England's number 10" mistake. We don't give number 10 to AMF like other countries, we give it to forwards then play some hopeful long kicks.
      Just like in golden generation when we played lampard and gerrard together, hoping that they'll just telepathically know where each other's at.
      Clubs that're successful build their teams around 1 or 2 players and facilitate that secret weapon. Remember when huge players like neymar, suarez, bale, or benzema, are just supporting actors to facilitate messi and ronaldo.
      That's why although every champion teams are great, it's the maradonas and peles and zidanes who won world cups.
      Unless you're germany, we can't just hope to have 12 great players who works perfectly like a gear in a machine. Just need 1 or 2 to take the lead and carry our squad to the final, screaming and kicking.
      Now it's time for bellingham.

    • @badabing8884
      @badabing8884 Год назад

      Exactly. He’s selling it to England fans who have only watched England since Southgate has become manager. Those of us who have watched England play for way longer - I have since 1986, know there have seen too many false dawns and focusing on one player is just BS and has been done before. England have produced many great players who were going to make the difference - Robson, Gasgoigne, Scholes, Gerrard, Beckham, Owen, Rooney. Only for them to get injured or not click, come into form at the right time.
      It’s a team game and there are clear weaknesses even in this England team that Southgate won’t or can’t address - namely mobility and pace in the centre of defence and a pass master as one of the pivots in midfield.

    I agree we have a great team and could go all the way with Bellingham in beast mode as he can provide that spark and garner belief within the team that you need in a tournament setting.
    Watching last night I felt Phillips looked like a weak link and his touch was a bit heavy when operating in tight areas. Southgate replaced him with Henderson but what do you think about Arnold here? His passing and shooting from deep could be lethal, he just might need to be a bit more steely in defence to take his place. I always feel Southgate errs on the defensive side when choosing his lineup.

    I do feel like Gareth Southgate has always been the right manager. I think he’s seriously underrated as the MNT coach. He’s so stable, manages the politics of the dressing room and the media expertly and has the players buying into his ideas. Not just tactically, but off the pitch.
    The difference between the vibe and the determination of this England side and those of the past is so evident. One of, if not the greatest England side ever, and a trophy in 2024 would be the perfect closure to this current England setup. (Although those wishing for change don’t ever seem to have an actual succession plan.)

    • @leodb3894
      @leodb3894 Год назад

      @@Pokjhbvcf I’m not sure until recently we really had the consistent ability to push teams by going through gears. We have always been heavily reliant on Kane off output and Sterling for making something happen.
      Could any of the players against Italy have made a difference in years gone? Saka was too young, Rashford only recently has found consistent form, Bellingham this year is hitting different, but was probably in need of more experience. Rice has only really started finding his actual position because he’s not needed everywhere by his club anymore. Foden is growing into his body more and making better decisions.
      Sure, in hindsight it’s easy to say ‘we should always have played like we did against Italy’ and the talent has for sure also always been exciting. but that misses the nuance of how Southgate has had to manage the squad through a lot of transition. We’re seeing a complete side here, a balanced team crafted through years of subtle tweaks and new players in new roles.
      I’m ranting now. Is GS perfect? No. What’s the alternative??

    • @leodb3894
      @leodb3894 Год назад +1

      @@theskunkster2315 Sort of true. Maguire is an interesting case study in how players used in different systems see drastically different end results.
      Tomori has a lot of flaws, he’s great at covering, strong, probably needs calling up to get game time in friendlies first and to adapt to the way the current setup behaves in transition, both offensively and defensively.
      Colwill is undoubtably a future England starter, versatile and in my view is Maguire’s successor. He needs to grow into his role at Chelsea first though. He’s not yet fully adapted to Poch, let alone getting ready for a Euros. We’ll probably see him ready for the next World Cup with a New England MNT manager.

    People who criticise Southgate fundamentally don’t understand what’s important for managing at *international* level, and why it’s completely different to club level.
    The hard problem is fostering a sense of team solidarity and tactical consistency with the very limited time available to work with inconsistently available players. Southgate does that better than any England manager in my lifetime.
    It’s why Capello was a great club manager but an appalling international manager.

    • @carlosbarton763
      @carlosbarton763 Год назад +6

      Perfectly put, it is essential that Southgate's successor can maintain the excellent team culture he has integrated, or England will go backwards, regardless of whether the new manager is established or not, or if he wants to play offensive or pragmatic football.

      Italy were best team in euro 20, England were 2nd best. The math adds up.

      @@NedTesco finally someone with a brain. Also I hate how people criticising this england side and southgate for his boring style of play. But if you look at all the winners of tournaments recently, none of them play attacking football. 2022 Argentina were pragmatic, so was France who have been one of the most consistent best teams in the world in the last 8 years. Also Portugal in 2016 were pragmatic. Litterally, this idea that England HAVE to play attacking/good football, just because of the players we have is an absolute fallacy. Litterally all recent evidence suggests pragmatism wins international tournaments not attacking football.
      There is also the point that you made about club and international football being very different which alot of people just can't grasp. The amount of time club mangers have with their players to drill them is litterally day in, day out. International managers have their players probs about 35 days a year, excluding major tournaments. Oh god the title is the usual English Paparazzi News Cycle:
    1. Bellingham is Jesus! - Comments: "He should be Captain!" , "He should be Prime Minister!"
    2. Bellingham is Satan! - Comments: "We did not win the WC/Euros because of him!" , "He missed the penalty!"
    C'mon more nuance...
    With that said, Bellingham is very good and to add, there's A LOT of very good England players across the team AND squad.
    Finally: A better video: Given England have one of the most talented teams/squads: "What are the MAIN FACTORS that could prevent the team performing better and beating other teams and not falling short?"
    With what England has: What could be the areas that cause England to fall short. I think that's the big question to ask. With such as Bellingham and Kane etc you're in position to ask those questions with some degree of accuracy and then you're in a position to solve them successfully in time before the big tournaments... not during or after or in retrospect...
    Eg England defence was cut up by Italy for their first goal too easily.
    Bellingham has his skills almost across the board which in turn means the whole team will perform better with him on the pitch albeit his eye-catching skills and runs are glamorous. But the key is to then boost all the other areas around him...

    • @Darren-sl7rp
      @Darren-sl7rp Год назад

      What do mean italys first goal. They only scored one. They didn't get close to scoring again for the next 80 mins. England were much better but all you can see is that they conceded a goal. Yeah that's football, it happens, the point however is about who scores the most, over 90 mins not 10. Italy just got lucky as England were finding possession too easy and lost concentration. Then they fixed that, switched back on and scored 3 goals and dominated Italy in every position. Every international side is going to produce threats and goals, that's just obvious. Do you think France were thinking 'oh no if kane had scored that penalty we probably wouldn't have won'? Of course they weren't and England played better in that game as well.

    Come on this is a very ordinary Italy team. Literally only recognised Barella and Donnarumma on their team sheet. Typical hyping of England only for it to all fall apart when they get knocked out. This is the same England that relegated from the Nations league top division FFS and beaten by Hungary 4-0. All this hype and we are going to win the Euros I have seen countless times before. Let’s talk more next summer and assuming we reach the knock out stages. That is a whole different matter.
    And England won’t win playing the likes of Maguire - whose distribution is just so f’ing slow and turns like an oil tanker and Phillips who is not world class pivot as first choices. These are just indications that Southgate picks mediocre players in these positions.

      No, they'll concede 2 goals a game and go out in the group stage. If the weakest part of your team is CB (compare England's defence with that of France and Portugal for example), then a double pivot makes sense
