The Academy and their shady asses told Babyface at the very last second that the original songwriters (the ones responsible for the film version of song-so Steven Schwartz and co.) would be the recipients if they won. However, the “pop” version would be performed for nomination presentation.
Hence when they won, Mariah knew what happened and just sat there. Whitney was confused as to why Babyface wasn’t announced as a participant and was looking around for him/see him go up on stage. But unintentionally, meme goals also.

You're speculating too deep into it. The Oscars at some point stopped allowing the awards to be accepted by other attendees on their behalf in their absence (unless the winner is deceased). Thus' the custom is the Academy accepts the awards on their behalf.
