I've been a drummer my whole life. I just didn't have a drumset the entire time. But I've been tapping on things my whole life.

Absolutely motivational. I'm 1 calendar year into learning. RUclips is my teacher and I'm kinda bouncing all over the place. 3 days ago I grabbed a notebook and I wrote down EXACTLY what I am going to practice. I start a stopwatch and start doing only that. It's helping

Love how over the years you've talked not just about the psychology of performing behind the kit, but how our instrument relates to our lives in general. Its great, because in the wealth of great material available on the Internet, this sort of stuff isnt talked about enough.

I have noticed that I can practice and nail things in my alone time. As soon as I am in front of a crowd those things stay hidden. I'm getting to the point where I can go for things I've practiced and once I get it right under pressure it's there for good. It's such a rewarding journey. 50 years old and been playing for 5 years seriously. It's never to late.

It’s never too late. I’m almost 51. Just started playing again a year ago after a 20 year hiatus. I played in front of people for the first time about a month ago. First tune was rough. Then I settled in. Keep at it.

Dude this was fire, I liked it a lot, everyone wants to play like Vinnie C. but thinks they can half ass it no problem, I've stuck a calendar up on my wall and I mark it everyday no matter how much or how little I practice, I practice every single day , there are exceptions because of life but in this year I can count maybe 6 or 7 missed days, and It is working..... I am starting to feel comfortable behind the kit. Great talk man.

I did the good stuff writing the first novel. At the same time, for the same amount of time (mental hospital so schedule) I would write at least five pages. Sometimes double or triple, but at least five. I finished a pretty good sized draft in about six months. I ended up scrapping it, but I refined my prose and found what works and doesn’t, simply by showing up, staying in the structure, and trying my best.

Insightful!!!! Loved this chat about the perspective(s) we should have as musicians. I think a lot of this hit the nail on the head and all of it prevented me from falling in love with guitar, so I gave it up and picked up the drums.
But I went into drumming with a new perspective, take inspiration from greatness, don’t judge myself or label myself as bad or good. I still struggle with taking the emotion out of practice. I imagine this is something most musicians experience.
    Anyways loved this!!!!❤❤❤

I've started playing the drums 15 years ago. Due to life I took breaks of 1-2 years multiple times since then. I didn't make the progress I wanted to, so I never called myself a drummer. Since this year I DO! I am a drummer! And it hits different

So true!!!!Im retired not but I teach and practice drums 3 hours a day for years now. Marching a Drum set. No band right now but I go out and to jams and listen to others. Most are scared to come out . I can put a beat out to life rather than safe.

Good is relative. Instead of focusing on being "good", focus on being better than you were yesterday. "I can play this exercise 5 bpm faster", "I can play the chorus of that song now", "I can play a single stroke roll at 76 bpm today" etc. Always good to talk shop with a fellow drummer ;^)

Could sum this up with be honest with yourself. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Drumming is a journey not a destination. Never stop learning!

It's the same old life lesson, no matter how old you are. Delay gratification. Have fun and do the work. It takes time. Everything worth it takes time. If you make a mistake, keep trying. You'll eventually get it right. Thanks.

YES! And patience is the key. I heard something the other day that floored me...all patience is is finding something to do and fill your time while you wait. And it's true. We have to keep ourselves busy on the task so we don't FEEL the time going by slowly. We're too busy working on our craft.

@@thedrumshowpodcast 10-4 on that. Teach people it’s their journey. Not their destination. Just like learning to play in 12/8 time. LOL.

My weakness is counting while playing and reading 📖 counting measures repeatedly measures like 50 repeats but I’m getting there.

Totally get it...easy to get lost with the endless measure repeats haha!

I’m the opposite. I can’t count at all without throwing myself off. I have to go by feel. I mostly play to music. Counting takes me off the beat. I have to listen to the other instruments and key off of where the feel takes me.
