  • This 52 minute video is a capture of a live Instagram sketching tutorial I created on the 27th January 2017. It explains the principles of laying out a grid on elevation views and plan views of an object which then can be translated into a perspective angle of choice.
    Aimed at the more experienced artist/illustrator/designer.
    In the video I build up a rear perspective view of a De-Havilland DHC2 Beaver float plane using the principles explained earlier in the video.
    I hope the information is useful and I look forward to your feedback and comments.

    This is SO AMAZING, I REALLY NEEDED TO SEE HOW THIS WAS DONE. PLEASE MAKE Instructional Videos. I grew up next-door to an amazing Aerospace artist, Manuel Alveraz. He was a great artist, but after he discovered "religion", there was no shutting him up in his desire to baptize everyone. GREAT, GREAT JOB OF INSTRUCTION!!!!! I love Keith Ferris mastery of descriptive Geometry.

    Sir, your video's are really informative. As an aeronautical student I find it really useful. Looking forward for more videos. Please keep up the good work.

    Outstanding work and video! And you are alone on RUclips with this kind of video. Couldn't you do more? I would say with a tilted perspective, like turning to another direction. What do you say?

      Filipe thanks for your feedback. I work full time so it is diffcult for me to commit to both my Instagram daily sketches as well as prepare video tutorials. I have taken your comments on board and will see when I next have the chance to prepare more videos. Thanks for your interest!

    Thanks. I am retired. A beginner as far as sketching goes and of course not an advanced student. Just now trying to get the rules of perspective in order. The way you set up your perspective grid was very informative and helpful.

    The BEST THING I LEARNED, that I was a BIT uncertain about, which was answered, is that the object, is drawn FLAT, with no effort at rounding to the horizon lines FIRST, and then it can be made circular, LATER. Huge help. Thanks, I hope you make a Video taped series. There is a technique, used by the OLD MASTERS, that is a huge time saver. If you take the overhead view, THE AZIUMUTH, And move it to any degree, from the left to the right, you can then draw THE VERTICAL LINES, directly off of the overhead "flat drawing", straight up, and it will give you the proper distances. I learned that from a student of Keith Ferris. I hope that makes sense. So, take the overhead view, MOVE IT ANYWHERE YOU PLEASE, within 360 degrees, and just draw lines STRAIGHT UP, and that will give you the Perpendicular lines, corrected for distortion, and then draw the perspective grid from their. That was one of Keith Ferris' techniques.

    This process is also touched on briefly in the book How to Draw Aircraft Like a Pro by Andrew C. Whyte/Charlie and Ann Cooper by MBI Publishing Company. They don't describe how to carry the squares down from the perspective points though so thanks for that :)

    Great tutorial, Marc! Watching you eyeball ellipses and midway points is epic! My struggle with the grid method is not wanting to create the distortion that happens with, as in your example, the large, extreme angle of wings. I know it has to do with cone of vision, and having the VPs within the bounds of the paper, but that concept escapes me to this day. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your skills and passion for aviation art!
    Regards,
    Morrell

      @marcphilippveenendaal4394  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for your interest and support. Yes for the purposes of this exercise, the cone of vision is restricted to the VP's being within the bounds of the paper. You can place the paper you are drawing on on a larger surface whereby the VP's are set further out and therefore not creating such a dramatic foreshortening. I sometimes go by eye to establish distant VP's. Something that comes with experience.

    This video was super helpful. I understand perspective decently but drawing mechanical stuff is super intimidating and looks very complicated (and for me probably messy because I still have a hard time drawing straight lines free hand). I'm sure I'm gonna be referencing this a lot! Thank you for this

    One question to you master.
    If you have a side view drawing but no top view or front side...and you have to come up with an appropiate width(top view) how do you go about it? Estimate it? Use human scale?
    Any tecnique ?
    Thanks and hope u doing well

    How do you ensure the initial cube (at 5.16, 7.56) is accurate? Thanks

  • @sheyen1576
    @sheyen1576 5 лет назад +1

    I can appreciate the effort in this type of rendering, but unless you paint for pleasure or non-commercial reasons, it is not really cost-effective. Its good for checking basic dimensions, but using scale models combined with an intimate knowledge of the aircraft ensures your hourly rate for the painting remains reasonable. That is, of course, unless you command serious money for your work!

    • @marcphilippveenendaal4394
      @marcphilippveenendaal4394  5 лет назад

      Steve Heyen I disagree! I paint commercially and for pleasure. Every project commands its own set of challenges and in some instances a model may not be available or the time to build one is unrealistic, this process has allowed me to tackle many projects quickly and effectively. It all comes down to practice and familiarity with the process. I have broken the process down in more manageable steps here for clarity. When I construct, I only generate the constructions necessary. It’s another approach and not the be all and end all of drawing, illustration or painting.
