Slow and Steady | Fly Fishing the Truckee River

- My dad and I drove up to Truckee to do some fishing and photography for his website. Due to my dad's meeting at 6:30, we could only fish for about an hour and a half. I got one fish to eat, but I feel like if we had more time to fish, we could have gotten more. The only fish I got seemed to be holding in the slowest water behind a large rock, but I struggled to find other slow areas with any structure. Reviewing the footage, I should've added another split shot to my rig because I fished over a lot of water that should've held fish. Besides that, I did all I could to increase my chances of catching fish. Share any tips you have in the comments section.

Sweet video dude! Looks beautiful out there. Just came across the channel and subscribed. Excited to see this thing grow!
Just got my license yesterday. Packed all my gear today. FISH ON hopefully tomorrow. Truckee River, Boca, East Walker or Walker River is the question 🤔
That’s awesome! I would say it depends on what conditions your are confortable fishing. The Truckee has a bunch of fish and is fishing great right now but runoff has just started so it’s a bit tough even for the guides. I’ve never fished the East or West Walkers but I know that the west walker gets really high in the runoff, more than the Truckee. The East Walker is also a very challenging fishery. I would go fish a smaller stream like Donner Creek or the West Carson during these high flows.
@@thecalfisher Thanks for the much needed tips as I'm new to fly fishing. Went to Twin Lakes at the end of the year & tried for the first time after getting all the stuffs. No luck unfortunately & then back to work. My goal is to land a trout this year with a fly rod.
@@vanlifebiker That’s awesome! Yeah I would start fishing small creeks first. It’s a good way to start catching wild trout that aren’t too hard to catch. There are lots of small creeks in the foothills too, including Grass Valley and in Nevada City. Pretty much wherever you live there are streams full of trout!
Tie some San Juan’s but in bright orange!! Your welcome!
Thanks! I will but now that it is fall and runoff is over will they still work as well?
I’m partial to yarn indicators for rivers and the oribos for Stillwater
Yeah yarn indies are really good strike detectors but unless you have little weight, flat water, or a really big tuft of yarn I found you can’t really use them in a situation like this. The rough water would drown it and the weight would pull it under at the slightest tick on the bottom, not something I want when I want to fish fast on the bottom. I still like ‘em tho for frog water and during the winter.
downtown
Yep
Bad
Compared to your nonexistent videos it’s pretty good.
