Neil Diamond was really good looking and he had a handsome voice. He really knew how to sing unlike so many of the so called singers of today. He beats any of today's singers hands down. And his songs always had meaning. Nice to listen to.
When this entertainer leaves us, the world will weep, for it will have lost a true legend. He will be "Done Too Soon". I feel truly blessed to have lived in a time where Neil Diamond was able to sing songs for us.
Without a doubt the most gifted songwriter/singer that ever graced planet Earth. I bought Hot August Night in 1972 and was totally hooked, still am. There is no one in the same league. Silky smooth chocolatey voice.
This is one of my favorite album.. I was only 12 years old. I always thought you would have to be a very good writer. To write this song. Only Neil diamond. God bless you. Neil. Love you. 🌷
Neil's voice will live on LONG before he's done. There is none more captivating, soulful, achingly alive than his voice & music. This crazy world needs to keep the sound of Neil's voice & music alive. It will be a gift he leaves to humankind which will live longer than himself. Thank you Neil. As long as we can hear your voice, music & emotion, you will be alive forever. ❤
One of my all-time favorite songs by 1 of my all-time favorite people. As a painter, this song resonates. It's the process. I love Neil 💎. A great musician & a compassionate, humble humanitarian. He's a really GOOD person.
Done to soon Something we all can and will relate to. Thank you Neil for all of your fantastic music. Been addicted to your songs...ever since... Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
I could not have said it better. Love him to . And what a very beautiful song, written and sun. What is not to love about Neil Diamond Tell me huh ! ! !
I am sorry I forgot the most important thing. Niel is so right, but I did not mention GOD ALMIGHTY, the very one and only that made that same sun and that same moon, along with everything else. Cannot thank GOD enough. GOD even made our sweat ! He made the words Neil wrote. GOD help us all ! GOD gets all praise for all things as far as I am concerned ! Thank you for allowing my comment. Thank you sammytcat !
Marvellous song, immaculately sung. I first heard this on a pre-recorded cassette (remember those?) of 'Tap Root Manuscript'. The cassette was official, not bootleg, as far as I know, but due to some manufacturing error this song was cut off, removing the last two words, so the last line just ran: "For being done..." and finished on the subdominant chord. It was so perfectly suited to the meaning of the song that I assumed it was deliberate, and thought it was yet another sign of the genius of the man! Even though I since found out differently, I still perform the song like that! 🤣
It was the same on the vinyl record. My mother had the album and I remember listening to it over and over. Same thing, last 2 words cut off and it went right into 'He aint heavy, he's my brother'. Must be it was recorded that way for a reason but who knows.
AMEN...ahead of his time has never described this bright manchild, yet this is exactly whar he was...his education added to the deepness of thought and spawned creativity....perservence...he has lots, passion, dedication to himself coupled with belief....great post thanls
A salute to some old colleagues, for whom, it was all "Done Too Soon." Over the past year or so, a number of my colleagues from our early days in Radio and TV have passed on. Forces one to "try" and come to terms with ones own mortality. But I trust, not anytime Too Soon!
This is incredible. Was just reminded of this song, had to listen to it again... Something about it touches the sublime. Everything about this recording... Everything.
I had to name check about half of these names, quite a history lesson Neil gave with this one, very good! Interestingly he included "bad guys" names too, it is true, everyone has a story and sometimes the details are not known until later. Sometimes, much later, and some details will always remain a mystery (conspiracy theorist can't stand that)....let GOD sort it out, so to speak.
Man Neil is a very hot and sexy back then , in the prime of his life .Just as the 70s and 80's were for me.i've always loved him since 73." when we first bought Hot August Night I said to myself ? ,hmmmmm who"s this gorgeous looking guy . magicianlasvegas ~ Really ? This is the second song on the "Hot August Night" album which is without a doubt his best selling album and ranked number 1 best seller 2 years in a row...
" And wept when it was all done" It's ironic about ones life. It seems when either raising a family, or creating an idea. We ask ourselves: what next! We are never satisfied to just live.
I can only speak for myself and how this song is relative to my life.... When you're young and healthy, life is abundant and full of unknown promise. Time seems limitless.... But as you enter the autumn of your years, time is not so benevolent and you reflect back on your years and what you might have done to have improved your life and the lives of those around you that you loved. You realize that time is fleeting and has overtaken you and that life is over way too soon.
I appreciate the post bur your headline shows you don't get it. It's the work of art that the artist LOVES doing, that, when it's done, leaves the artist sad that the doing is over.
I guess the reason I didn't understand your comment was because even though I like Billy Joel, I never got in to WDSTF so that's why I am confused. I understand Done Too Soon because it's pretty obvious. I'll have to listen to WDSTF. Thanks.
"Wolfie Mozart". :( I think this song is about the moment when one realizes their life is over. Not necessarily that death is evident, but when accomplishment is over and the fanfare dies out to a slower ballad. The song is the same way, it begins upbeat and slows, profoundly illustrating the tide of human life.
Sid Vicious and Len Bias Sam Kinneson and Walter Payton And Paul Walker And JonBenet Ramsey Steve Irwin and Jan Joplin B.I.G. And Pat Swayze King of Pop and the Prince of Purple Rain JFK and MLK Chadwick Boseman and Crista McCauliffe Bruce and Brandon Lee Kobe Bryant too Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe Tupac Shakur and The Big Bopper Sharon Tate and Otis Redding too And each one there Has one thing shared They have sweated beneath the same sun Looked up in wonder at the same moon And wept when it was all done For bein’ done too soon For bein’ done too soon For bein’ done
No problem. I don't care for WDSTF, even though I like a lot of Billy's older stuff. In the song, he touches on many different historical events and people, very like this one. The song is nothing like this, other than the style of lyric writing.
For being done too soon. Under the current system you have earned enough of their so called points to retire but cannot collect them until you are of a certain age after breaking your back for so long. They set it up to wait until you're about done if you even get there to collect what they say you have earned. Why? I don't know but one thing I do know... it doesn't seem right. If you go to the county fair and win a giant teddy bear for your grandchild they don't tell you you have to come back when you are 65 or more years of age to collect your so called 'prize'. Random thoughts about the whole done too soon thing tonight for whatever it is or isn't worth. Rolland
I always said Billy ripped this thing off of Niel. I hated We Did'nt Start The Fire with a passion. I love a lot of Billys great stuff, but that one was pretty lame I thought. This one is great on Hot August Night.A great B3 organ sound live. Niel Rocks.
I'm not sure I understand your remark so before I say something really nasty, could you clarify for me what exactly you mean in regards to "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel compared to "Done too soon".
Jesus Christ, Fanny Brice, Wolfie Mozart and Humphrey Bogart and Genghis Khan and On to H. G. Wells. Ho Chi Minh, Gunga Din Henry Luce and John Wilkes Booth And Alexander's King and Graham Bell. Why do you not understand my comment? It is my opinion that Billy Joel's song (WDSTF) was somewhat of a rip-off of this song by Neil. They are very similar in the writing style. Trust me, I'm correct.
Yeah a very good song. But the first man mentioned transcends all the others and has the unique existence of being the Word of God incarnate. Neil is not a Christian and should respect the restrictions we apply to the reference of “the name”.
This deep song can only be written by a guy like Neil Diamond.
Neil Diamond was really good looking and he had a handsome voice. He really knew how to sing unlike so many of the so called singers of today. He beats any of today's singers hands down. And his songs always had meaning. Nice to listen to.
+Jorge Mario Rodas and still is :)
And no auto tune either.
He's still good looking.
Agree
When this entertainer leaves us, the world will weep, for it will have lost a true legend.
He will be "Done Too Soon". I feel truly blessed to have lived in a time where Neil Diamond was able to sing songs for us.
AMEN.
Agree!!
A very very well written song. The very last 30 seconds are so sad; but true.
Without a doubt the most gifted songwriter/singer that ever graced planet Earth. I bought Hot August Night in 1972 and was totally hooked, still am.
There is no one in the same league. Silky smooth chocolatey voice.
The greatest live album of all time, bar none.
@@peteosmussen2877 Agreed
McCartney's got him beat IMO, but not by much.
Legend !!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite album.. I was only 12 years old. I always thought you would have to be a very good writer. To write this song. Only Neil diamond. God bless you. Neil. Love you. 🌷
Genius in his own lifetime.
Holy crap he's beautiful. And so is this song. Love.
Ha! I'm a guy, and I'm not gay... but I guess I'll still have to agree with you. ;)
Neil's voice will live on LONG before he's done. There is none more captivating, soulful, achingly alive than his voice & music. What a beautiful, beautiful man with such a deep meaningful voice, he makes me melt ...... and I LOVE IT....
The slower part at the end always makes me cry! Because I am 56 now and it WILL be done too soon!
thank you Neil brings back wonderful memories 😊♥️
Hairstyles may come & go..... Diamonds are forever.

You may be thinking of the version from his 1973 or so 12 Greatest Hits Album. I had that one, and that song cut off as you say.
TapRoot Manuscript, absolutely affected me from musical style, to opinions on life, in general.
Besides his songs i like his eyes very much 👀
He's amazing.Just watched this from Glastonbury.Superb.
A voice so unmistakeably only Neil. Just send him my way.
Nail tus canciones las escucho todos los días son himnos soy de Argentina ❤
I remember this song from when I was 13. Just rediscoverd it. Absolutely amazing.

If i could go back in time and be at one show it would be hot August night 1972
Lindo maravilhoso
Brad Staggs closed out that crazy week that Doc Thompson died in February 2019 on Mojo50 Radio. Hadn't heard it in decades. Blew my mind!
This is incredible. Was just reminded of this song, had to listen to it again... Something about it touches the sublime. Everything about this recording... Everything.
I agree, Neil is incredible.
Great song.

De vuelta el amor a mi vida
Like always, thanks ND. If you were from the Bronx you would be perfect :)
This is one of my favorites of his. I would add the names John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury and Karen Carpenter to it if I sang it

Just so damned sexy! And he still is. Love his new CD 'Home Before Dark"
Love those pouting lips.
@mrswozzle I think you missed the point. Listen to it again. Nice dig by the way. "Minor" indeed.
Patrice Lumumba
Has a catchier tune than Billy Joel's "WDSTF".
Somewhat similar themes - but both wonderful songs by wonderful artists

@barbarasfolly I always thought Billy ripped off this idea to make his shitty song.

Great song. But Sammytcat, it has NOTHING to do with "celebrities,' it's a song about HUMANS, and their commonality!
John Wilkes Booth??? I guess his work was done too soon but hardly worth celebrating.
I always thought Billy Joel ripped this off for his piece of shit "We Did'nt Start The Fire".
Not a good version. Horns are ridiculous in this song.. another over zealous producer at work. For the definitive version see Hot August Night 1972.
yes we all know we are going to die...HULLO????!!!..what we dont need is REMINDING from a minor singer songwriter!
Pathetic ignorant comment! 😡
