- This is just a list of some of the tools I have brought and tested this year that have left a good impression. Links are down lower in the description so you can check them out for yourselves.
All the tools are less that £25 and should benefit any woodworker.
I have released this a little early for 2 reasons.
1. So that there is still time for you to make use of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales
2. so that I can release the second in the series before Xmas.

Mark, thank you for you being you!! I appreciate the humor/tongue-in-cheek approach to your teaching of woodworking. Happy Holidays tp you and yours from Southern California.
Ah man thats kind. Really kind. And I appreciate it.
Love your videos and “be kind to yourself”
Thank you Charlie. Very kind.
Great video Mark. I’ve actually got the fastcap tape measures and bought them online in the UK. I’ve got two and they are both metric on both sides and one is a standard one whereas the other is a lay flat carpenters tape.
I love the white tape with black writing. It’s great to use.
Thank you Ben. I have a feeling this will be the common theme of the comments. Cant believe I didnt even research it enough. Great recommendation bud, appreciate it.
Were did you get the fast cap one mate and were they expensive over here?? One I've found and have stuck to ox tape picked up a 5m and a 8m for 11 quid from Toolstation
Happy Holidays to all!
Great gift ideas and tips on the gluing brush/tray/roller! Thanks!
Hi Mark, Great tips and ideas, like the counter sink bits for the drill, I usually countersink by using a bigger drill bit, but these look a lot better. Glue pots I use old ketchup or sauce bottles and I think they have good grip when squeezing the glue out. Like your self I do have a lot of measuring tapes I think I have 8 or 9 I have one in inches only and two in cm/mm and the rest in both. I do like the gluing tray and roller. I like the idea " be kind to your self " my be I should in once in a while. As always good to see you and a great video, catch you soon mate, Take care
Hi Shaun. The bigger drill bit is really fine and in the next tool gift video I am doing it is one of the methods I recommend but I find that on soft wood you can get a bit of tear out. Depends on the drill I guess. Love the ketchup bottle idea. The be kind to yourself thing that I am leaning into at the moment is because it seems to be a common theme amongst people these days. We seem to be ready to think of others which is lovely but then we dont treat ourselves with the same consideration. We pressure and criticise ourselves and seem to hold ourselves to a higher standard than others. I do it and hadn't even realised that I did. So I figure good advice for me is hopefully good advice for others. Take care and I'll catch you soon bud.
@@startmaking1 Thanks mate, have a good one
For the tape. A Milwaukee 5m mag pro metric only. Ticks all of your boxes.
I love mine.
Fab recommendation. Thank you,
I learned the using two different tape measure the hard way! We were doing an install of cabling in a local library. We used on tape measure inside, and a different one outside to measure the cabling. And yes, I NOW know that is NOT they way to install cabling, but this was a long time ago. The tape measure we were using outside was a larger spool type type measure, which we used because they were fairly large runs. I had never heard of or knew there was such a thing as a masonry tape measure. There are different type of masonry tapes, but very basically it can allow you to measure a distance and it accounts for the seems so you have an estimate of how many blocks you will need. So, a foot on a masonry tape is smaller than an actual foot, because it is taking out the seem size. Sooo, the cable we measured outside would always be shorter than what we needed... UGH!!!
Very entertaining, as usual. Happy Christmas Mark.
Thank you Derek and Happy Christmas to you too.
I'm amazed that you don't have more subscribers.
I live in the backwards imperial USA and I use both systems. Sometimes something I measure ends up exactly xx millimeters so I just use it. Especially if I have to divide it. I know fractions but it's just so easy to do half of 330mm.
Happy holidays to you too 🎈
Hey bud. I appreciate the comment. Thats how I use them and it seems to annoy people so I need to retrain lol, Enjoy the holiday period.
You want to look at Axminster tape measure's. I use the metric only ones and the markings are on both sides. I bought one, liked it, went back and bought another 6. They are the only ones I use now
“If your workshop is 5m x 4m, like mine… yes, I’ve exaggerated by about half a metre in either direction…”. 😂😂😂 LMAO!
Some excellent suggestions there, Mark.
I’ve made a tape holder (on a cleat, of course) that sort-of does the jog but I really must stop being a tight git and just buy a proper dispenser. It would make my life so much easier.
Those deburring countersink bits look the business as well. If Santa doesn’t visit, I might have to.
Forwarding on this video to my kids for inspiration.
Let's hope the kids get the memo and buy you something useful. Have a good weekend Roger,
Those countersink bits seem very useful! Looking forward to the next video for some extra details!
Cheers bud.
What an amazing set of recommendations all based on real world experience. Invaluable! Fairly new subscriber but find myself really looking forward to your content, not only for the great woodworking advice but also for the positive mental health message you spread - which has personally helped me greatly. Onward and upward 🙏
Thank you Gary. This comment made me very happy. I have to keep the messages going as they are what I tell myself. Being kind to ones self is just important to being kind to others. But is so often forgotten. It's a funny double win, you look forward to the content whereas I look forward to some truly lovely messages. Thank you.
You can get fastcap tapes in the UK. I love the blue ones - pure mm. I think they are fab!
I am learning today that I did not know that these were even available over here. Thats great news. Thank you.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you and Merry Christmas.
I like the Stanley fat max tapes. They usually go on sale during the holidays 2 for $20. I go through them regularly because I’m really tough on them and they have held up the best by far. This year HD had a 2 pack of Milwaukee tapes that were almost identical to my fat max, except they have an opening at the bottom where I can safely stop the tape with my finger and hold it where I want it! I think I have a new favorite now.
25’ for each of them
This is a great list for woodworkers! I would be highly pleased if someone got me anything off this list, even if I already have one. These are all something that I’d be ok having multiples of… except maybe the drill guide, but I don’t have one of those yet, so no problem there!! 😂😂 great video, Mark! Keep them coming!
thank you Damon. The drill guide was one that I didnt have either and now I find I use it quite a lot. But 2 would be a little over the top. Thank you as always.
Another interesting video Mark. I'm someone who prefers to buy tools myself rather get them as gifts. I'm surer of actually using them then. I have several new tools received as gifts that are nice, but not used. I have some hard rubber shapes to wrap sandpaper around for sanding. My dad taught us boys to wrap sandpaper around blocks of wood or wood shapes & go at it. That's definitely not the best way. I bought a couple of the counter sinks you show & I agree they provide the neatest cut holes. For tape measures, I keep a 16 ft., 25 ft. & 50 ft. handy. The last is for building construction, which I haven't done in years. I have a 6 ft pocket tape that goes with me when I'm measuring lumber or like articles. I agree that no two tapes read the same, similar to some flat rulers. I'm right-handed, so when I hold the tape case in my left hand & pull the tape out with my right, the numbers are upside down. Correct reading tapes are made, so I have to get one of those. That drilling guide looks handy. I've never come across one of them, so don't know if they're available here, maybe on Amazon. I've heard of steel drill bushings being sold individually for projects. I look forward to your next video.
Another great video Mark…. Santa has already been very good to me a new job site saw just arrived this morning only 4 weeks waiting lol funny enough the same as yours I look forward to to building its very own mobile work bench
Santa has been good. He got me the same last year and I am still smiling. It's a good saw, blooming loud.
Mark great video a couple of great ideas that I’ve never thought of as gifts. Thanks for sharing and Happy Holidays to you and your family
Hi Jim. Thank you bud. Happy holidays to you and yours too.
I have the red silicone roller and tray. Handy to use. I just put in the utility sink and fill it with water so glue comes right off. Another free container that I use is the single serving yogurt container. Eat yogurt, rinse, save cup to use in shop for many jobs.
Fantastic idea with the yogurt pot. Really simple. Thank you
I love the idea of an "in depth" study in to drills. LOL. Nice share Mark. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks Ian. PS I was going to email you but while I remember, Keith (RagNBone) Brown says thank you for the plane iron tool you made. He is chuffed with it. As am I.
Cracking job Mark. Silicone pots and a new tape measure for me 😊
Not a bad gift to self and not breaking the bank, win, win win, I tested the silicone pots, great for the day after. Probably not quite sealed enough for keeping the glue good too far past that. Handy though.
Check the Lufkin brand tapes. Good for LH or RH reading, plus is pretty good on internal measurements.
Thank you. I am finding so many tools that I had not heard of. This is turning out to be a costly video to make lol.
Thanks Mark. Nice list of kit. GTG, Amazon is calling. ;) Take care & stay safe.
Thank you as always Doug. Sorry if I made your day any more expensive. Take care bud.
About the countersink bits: they are designed for metall work but perform great in wood. The difference to the "orange juicer" bits is that these bits must be used before you bore the hole to get a clean result! If you are using them in a ready bored hole you allways get something awful but no clean countersink. On the other side it's not the way I'm working because wood drill bits are not designed to bore a hole centered into a countersink hole, so you have to use metall bits for this job.
interesting that Mark didn't mention that must-use-it-first limitation about these countersink bits. that pretty much destroys them as an idea for me. so thank you very much for mentioning it before I wasted my time and/or money on them.
Just to get it right: the "orange juicer" bits with 3 to 7 cutting edges have to be used before drilling the hole to get a clean countersink! The shown bits for metall work (which I'm using too) only work in drilled holes and create an excellent countersink. And you always need a set of different sizes because they have a limited range of hole diameter at which they can work. A bit that's designed for about 4mm holes doesn't fit for 10 mm holes!
to be honest I knew the ones I recommend are to be used after drilling, but I didnt know the orange juicer ones were for before. Im learning today too. Brilliant. .
Well, I had no idea about the juicer bits as I will forever call them Thank you. I love learning in the comments section.
I would love multiple tape measures, purely to stop myself moving everything off my work bench and saying "where the bloody hell did I put that tape measure? How do I keep doing thi...oh there it is"
lol, brilliant. I just heard myself doing exactly that.
Or get rid of all of them and revert to the ancient ways! Hope that sparked your interest.
I have several tapes and the first thing I do is see if it matches the others. But I only do it to 6 feet. I find that most of my measurements are under 6 feet.
I tend to use rulers in place of tapes. Anything under 24 inches I find a ruler is easier to use and more accurate.
BTW, do you know the difference between a rule and a ruler?
It's easy, a rule starts at the end of it but a ruler has a space before it starts.
That's one of those useless facts like the real name for a rubber band, a variable tension gripper.
@@a9ball1 Interesting. I only use 1 tape for rough work and then hardly ever. I use a rule as a straight edge for the smaller stuff and for the Farnsworth method. Apart from that it is mostly comparisons.
Great video as always. Thanks for the suggestions. Will definitely be making a couple of purchases.
Thank you . I appreciate it.
Great video!!
Thank you Tom.
Another great video Mark. I was doing my Amazon Xmas list alongside the video…..let’s see what father Xmas brings.
I hope you get some cool tools and bits and bobs that are useful.
😂😂😂 prawn short love it I'll have to send it to the kids well done rkid
I heard that somewhere and it stuck with me. lol Have a good weekend bud.
Thank you. Very helpful. Be kind to yourself, too.
I try to bud. Easy to forget. Thank you.
put a hole in the top of that silicon pot, and stick the brush through it. Make sure the hole is small enough to squeeze the brush tightly, just under the metal ring. The lid will catch glue drips from the brush, and the whole thing seals tight, so no dry glue.
Now that is brilliant thinking. I love it. thank you.
Ox and Milwaukee both make metric only tape measures but only marked on one side. Advent makes one called Vice Versa that is marked metric only on both sides. All class II.
Great recommendation. and only today did I learn what class 1 and class 2 actually meant.
Great video. I actually tossed all my DeWalt Fat Max because the locking mechanism fails after moderate use. I almost exclusively the small 9-foot / 3-meter magnetic-backed DeWalt tape measure which I keep stuck to the side wing of my table saw, or in my pocket if I’m using some other tool. You are absolutely spot-on when you say you don’t need a tape measure that reaches dimensions larger than your shop! By the way, I checked out Fast Cap and they do have a metric only series. Don’t know if they’re available in the UK.
huh, i thought Fat Max was a Stanley product line naming, not Dewalt. I could be misremembering, of course.
@ you’re right. My bad
Brilliant, as usual!
Thats kind. Thank you.
Thanks Mark for yet another great video, I was very disappointed to hear that's not real fur on my sandpaper, I've been saving all my old paper to make a winter coat! Happy Christmas be kind to yourself, and, as always stay lucky.
Great little ideas.
I only have little ideas Mark lol. Seriously though, thank you.
I'm going to have to binge watch this later. Have company atm, and would be so rude to whack the earphones in... 😂
lol, Makes me chuckle at the image.
@startmaking1 meanwhile, 80% of the company sat on their phones... why do I bother 🤣🤣🤣
Great vid. One bit made me spit my coffee out.
You got me looking at tape dispensers. I’ve found one that does three 25mm tapes on the same dispenser. And one that does 50mm tapes by the same company.
BD50 and PD351 from ‘pack solution’ best prices that I could find.
I appreciate that, thank you. sorry you lost some coffee, lol. That tape dispenser sounds awesome. In fact, I have just ordered the triple. I should not be as excited as I am.
Thanks, these are great ideas
thank you David.
To my family, I'm cheap I want a full set of Festool tools 😂
you and me both. So badly.
Awesome that one was very unique mate! Well done 😊
Thank you mate. Hope your weekend is going well. Looking forward to watching your video this week with my lunch.
@ thank you. Depending on how you are with melting wax maybe don’t eat 😂 i published my video today and my wife said it made her a little uncomfortable 😅🤣😅
@coolabahwoodworking now I have to watch it lol
@ 😂😂😂😂😂
Nice video, I've already passed on a link for the drill block to "Santa", I think I'll follow it up with the countersinks 😄
Brilliant. Probably the 2 best take aways from the video. I apologise in advance for the second in the series in a few weeks time. Slightly more pricey tools.
@@startmaking1 at least you're showing a range, and not just the expensive ones 🙂
@chriscollins9717 that was kind of my plan. Even the next ones are something like 30 to 40.
2.58 - popsickle?
What’s that in old money😂
It felt weird to say it I have to be honest. Lolly pop stick right .
merry christmas to you and thanks
Merry Xmas back to you and yours. Thank you.
Some rubber mating (sold in Dyas and others) would prevent damage to chisels etc
Thats a great little recommendation. Thank you
Cracking video mate plenty options in there but your telling me i can't send you sandpaper sticks as a Christmas present 😮😂 ok live edge timber it is. On the tape front i picked up ox tapes they are brilliant 5m and 8m for 11 quid from Toolstation they also survive bouncing off the wall test (ask me how i no 😬) be very interested here your thoughts on the countersink with drill bit included. Ive haf 3 sets so far they all keep breaking. I have the same bits as you showed and there great but you no yourself pain to keep swapping over. 👍🏴 Catch up soon
YEah, I know how you feel bud. The bits break every time I drop my drill lol. Great test for your tape measure lol. Next video or the one after, however they come out, I am not set yet, but before xmas I do a bit of a deeper dive into the countersink bits. I also tested the Amana and the trend ones with the depth stop. The Amana one is pricey but it is really good.
@@startmaking1 will look into them mate thanks. Look forward to the videos. Catch up soon also if your free any point next week could do with your advice on something 👍🏴
Do you have any ideas or tips for superglue? I do a lot of pen turning and open and close the CA glue very often. I usually can't get through a whole 50ml bottle of the stuff before the top of the bottle becomes clogged or destroyed because the glue builds up and cleaning it out of the lid can damage the lid pretty significantly.
You should give rough price estimations in Euro, too.
I constantly do parallel conversions from Pounds and Dollars...
I know but honestly it is hard enough squeezing in 2 currencies and so I had to pick my 2 biggest audiences. You are of course right though.
@startmaking1 Gues I just have to improve my conversion skills
You can buy the fatmax tape with just metric measurements and no inches. Worth searching for
Thank you Stephen. Great advice, not to mention the comment shows you watched most of the video. So thank you for that too, Appreciated.
Foam backed sandpaper, sold in rolls. Not nearly as clumsy or short lasting as a sanding sponge and really great for curves and all sanding on non flat surfaces. I always disliked sponges and how they would almost immediately become wornout, these hold grit quite well and are easier to use.
Brilliant advice. Thank you. Cant believe I have never seen it before.
I don’t know about availability around the world but in my opinion the Hultafors Talmeter i the best tape measure. TAL are the initials of the swedish guy who invented it.
This brand keeps coming up. That has to be a good recommendation. thank you
good videos as usual, advent vice versa tape measure has metric on all sides on top and underneath yellow on black unfortunately but clear numbers.
Thank you, very kind. And thank you for the recommendation. I had no idea how many different tapes there were. I also dont understand the black and yellow and why it was the standard for so long. Oh well.
The citrus countersinlk had a really goofy angle on it.
I think it was the camera on my phone that did it. I thought that when editing. Odd
Question, I am a vegan, so the leather strop is straight out. But then you showed the cork sheets and it struck me that perhaps the cork might be an acceptable substitute for the leather. And you could put a stop on the backside of the block for grip.
Great point. And not one I have tried. But I think the rubber is maybe a little sticky. If it was me, I would get a piece of mdf and rub the Polish compound directly on that.
Vegan hmmmm.., get the leather strop but don't eat it👍
@@RobertRedland I'm pretty sure you are just doing the standard anti-vegan snark, but just in case you really have no idea, veganism isn't a diet, its is a moral philosophy that leads to not using any animal product for anything.
LOLOLOLOL to every gift idea, btw, you can buy Fastcap here in the UK but Hultafors are better, class I version.
I have just heard about fast cap here. Pretty cool. I will have to test one. But thank you too for the recommendation of a Hultafor. I have never heard of them. Looking now. Can only find class 2. Will take a closer look. Thank you.
@@startmaking1 Ask mrs google to find the Tape Store
I prefer a steel rule rather than a tape measure
Me too for smaller measurements.
This is a little off-topic but did you wife ever see your message for her on the back of the wood carving that looked like fabric (Aug 31 video)?
I don't know any woodworker who doesn't switch back and forth from metric to imperial, now.
That's good to know. Thank you.
18:23 Nasa did this once.. only cost them 125mil dollars ;)
Had to rewatch. Brilliant.
👊👍
Thank you Richard
Fastcap tape measure all day, every day. They are very inexpensive compared to the quality.
Thank you .
Why on earth do we still have tapes with imperial measurements on in the U.K.! A tape wouldn’t even make the long list if it wasn’t metric only and if it wasn’t metric all 4 sides it wouldn’t make the short list! 🙄
lol, good point well made.
Because some people understand the benefits and dare I say advantages, of the Imperial measuring system.
The FatMax is available in metric only.
No. Man I didn't do my research well for that bit. Thank you
@@startmaking1 I have the 5M version, all the features of the 8 & 10M, but much smaller/lighter. The only problem I had when I bought mine, was the price for the 5 & 8M was almost the same.
That's excellent news.
Кривий Ріг 📯 вітає 🎉 всіх, мирного неба Україні
Thank you.
Keep shilling, baby, they will fill your stocking.
Have to keep the fine balance going.
