Thanks for this eye opening video. You don’t really think about the cost of peanut butter or availability of fresh vegetables, on island. These things really add up. The saying; “if it were easy, everyone would do it” comes to mind. Sending gratitude from Boston.....
Great video! My wife and I vacationed on St. Thomas this last July. The trip had been planned for almost a year and it was our first time to the Caribbean so despite the pandemic we took the trip. My wife really fell in love with the island to the point that we started floating the idea of someday moving there.
Well, keep in touch. I'm a Realtor and I can help you find a place. I was going to split off another channel and start doing more Real Estate videos, but I might just put them on this channel... so stay tuned.
I've been on island here in St. Thomas for a month short of 2 years, and I will be moving back stateside to get married. You make some excellent points, and I think you hit the cost of living pretty well here (altho I think you might hit it a bit harder), and how difficult/impossible it is to find the things we take for granted stateside, like good pizza and Target/Walmart etcetc. The electric rates here are in the top 2 of rates on the entire planet -- in the .47/kwh neighborhood, and it's not getting any better. Plus you have to buy water for your cistern if you're not relying on rain water. And yeah, that's the other annoying thing: MOLD. Everything here either molds or rusts, and sometimes it molds *and* rusts. You're really accurate about the driving conditions. You need a skinny vehicle with some good road clearance here. That's why Jeeps, Toyota Rav4s and those older stubby little Subaru SUVs are so popular here. Put it this way: A 1990s or early 2000s Honda Accord would be way too big for the roads here. So are cars with a lot of horsepower, because you'll rarely ever get any faster than 30-40mph here unless it's like 11pm -- and even there, common rules of the road and traffic laws are pretty much just a suggestion. Put simply, this island doesn't know what a straight-line road is, and the hairpin switchbacks can sneak up on you if your new here. I'm glad you've brought up "island car." Because if you bring your nice car here, it will soon turn into an island car especially given the piss-poor state of the roads here and the basic inability of the locals to navigate their way in and out of a parking lot spot. Potholes R Us, so your best course of action is to sell your car before you leave stateside, or have someone sell it for you on consignment. And as you point out, this isn't a flat island except what's fronting the harbors, so you're talking about going up and down the mountain, which is a good 1500 foot elevation -- people here get their front brakes and rotors changed as often as their change their oil and their underwear. But overall -- and the must of all musts -- the ONE thing to bring (if you can afford the rent, which is just NUTS here, or even find an apartment that isn't a slum because a lot of the building owners have converted their units to Airbnbs because, well, tourists) is a partner, because if you come alone (like I did), count on living a very lonsome existence. As you accurately point out, friends are incredibly tough to make, and twice as tough to make with the locals. And yeah, COVID isn't helping in that respect, either. Maybe my outlook would differ somewhat if COVID never existed, but coming here solo is exceptionally rough. So in sum, my estimation of living on St. Thomas the past few weeks short of 2 years is this: Thos place is indeed the paradise they say it is -- if you're able to go back home after 3 days. Living here, different story.
Ha, that is quite a summation. And pretty accurate. It's not for everyone. You definitely need to be able to afford to live here. But, I've found now that I'm settled in, we really like it here. Thanks for the comment.
I agree. Jamaica and Cayman are no different as far as rent and loneliness go. Although Cayman doesn’t have any mountains and it’s easier to find Canadian and American stuff - but don’t expect Walmart or Target. Many Caymanians fly to Florida every 4-6 months for major shopping.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have been contemplating on moving to St. Thomas, in a couple of years, and wanted to get quality information other than what I've found on the internet. I'm glad you covered the cost and the issue with the power; I had no idea. You touched on several things that put this move into perspective for me. I really appreciate this. I'm visiting in April 2021, if all gets better with the pandemic, and I'll make a definitive decision then. I did subscribe. Thanks again!
This was a fabulous video and thanks for making it. Back in the 70's I got to San Juan Island on a cruise ship and it was a magical experience and I always wanted to go back for a visit. But it truly was just a fantasy. But I found your video extremely interesting on what it would cost to move and about "island life". You brought up all the things someone like me would overlook and I found that amazing. I was really surprised on what you're paying in monthly expenses to live there. That stunned me. But good for you and your wife for making the best of it. Again thanks so much for being so generous to share your experiences with us that watch your video.
Thanks for commenting. I have some more videos on this channel about traveling around San Juan and Puerto Rico be sure to subscribe and check them out.
I did subscribe and will follow your other videos. One question, is there a Catholic church on your island? I woke up thinking about that last night too. Thanks for letting me travel with you through your video's.
This video is 100% accurate! Thank you so much for doing this. I've have looked for something like this and you're right about people being rude when you ask questions about this stuff. We are almost done with exactly everything your just went over. We leave Missouri on Oct 22 and should be in St Croix by Oct 29! We bought a home in St Croix at the end of 2018 and have been trying to get there since. It takes SO long to get everything done plus with Covid, everything stopped. We are shipping 50 years of our lives in a 40' container and selling everything else - SO HARD! We are paying $18,150 to get the container shipped, which will take about 6 weeks to get there (if there are no hurricanes). We are taking one truck with us which will cost us $6570 after we drive it from Missouri to Miami and get it loaded up. We are using Omega Relocations for everything and Alisa is the BEST! We did exactly what you said about shopping around on the island. Every time we visit, we've tried to research what will be available and what we need to bring or purchase online and have shipped to us. On St Croix, we have 2 K-Marts and 1 Home Depot plus all the mom & pop shops where prices were ridiculous. It took my husband days to find Dr. Pepper which we finally found at a gas station for a buck can. I found a 2-liter bottle of root beer for $6 and brownie mix for $4.85. Groceries ARE high. WAPA - don't even get me started!!!! We argued with them for over a year with our lawyer down there to get our house licensed as residential. WAPA insisted since the owners prior to us did not get proper licenses when they remodeled that we had to pay a commercial rate. Since you are in real estate, please for the sake of your customers, check into this for them prior to selling a home. Again, this took us a year to get cleared up. WAPA kept billing us $70 a month even though we aren't down there and our electric was turned off. Since WAPA is owned by the government, they pretty much do what they want and you have no way to argue with them. We still have a dusk to dawn light in front of our home that no one will fix. It's been out since Maria and WAPA has a report out for us but they say they don't have lights to put up. Island life! Driving is the same on St Croix. If you don't have 4-wheel, don't drive. The pot holes are scary big and the curves are so sharp that I'm afraid to go anywhere. People drive like maniacs. They are either going 20 miles an hour or 70 miles an hour on the same road. I refuse to drive at night. Again, thank you for your video! I will make sure to get our electronics updated in the next month.
Congratulations on finally getting to the islands. That is exciting. Thanks for chiming in to share some of your experiences. $18K for the shipping container is a chunk of change. You'll get used to driving. The places you have to as a normal person are pretty easy. For me as a Realtor, I am always to really hard to get to places. I still get a little unnerved.
How interesting! We purchased and closed on our home in STX this past Sept. And we are also from Missouri, and our home is purchased from a couple from Missouri coincidentally. But just due to departing from employment, packing, COVID, etc. we will not be arriving until Nov. 26 - that is the plan. We also are from Missouri. We've visited the island several times, and the last time, we treated our visit as a homecation - checking out WAPA, stores, hospitals etc. This is an expensive move! We debated a long time and even had a truck reserved to drive our things to Miami, but ultimately we have gone with a cargo drop. I appreciate in the video the reminder that it does become dark at 6:00. Hopefully you have arrived now - likely busy unpacking. I'm curious if there is anything at this point you think you'd have done differently in your move?
Have lived on STX for 20 years. Prices and WAPA are high, but OF COURSE they would be since it's a tiny remote island. That's true of any such island worldwide, not just STX. Also, you do NOT need 4-wheel drive, and driving at night is fine. People do NOT drive like maniacs any more than anywhere else in the US. I think you're just on the sensitive side. The roads ARE horrible though, I'll give you that.
Guy from Montana living on a Caribbean island. Can’t hardly get any different. I’ve always wondered if I could handle island life. That means I probably can’t.
Yea Mon. It was definitely an adjustment. Be sure to subscribe and stay tuned. I'm going to do a follow up to this about what my thoughts are one year later.
Very informative! Thanks for sharing. Can you do a video with additional details - like specific groceries stores, health care, finding a new accountant, maybe something about specific rentals with prices, etc. the more guidance and specifics the better. I'm surprised there's nothing like that on RUclips yet.
Yea, I'm planning on doing a "what it cost to live here video" I just haven't done it yet. But now that I know someone actually wants to see it, it will motivate me. I'm a Realtor too, so I could go into the computer and show a couple of different rentals and what you get for the money.
Definitely interested. I'm also interested in how people basically get set up from scratch there (finding new everything from a doctor to a CPA)... like 10 most important steps when moving to the usvi :) Something like that!
The rentals video would be interesting to watch. I only found one other realtor who posts regularly about properties on the usvi. I'll be looking to rent something there soon.
We are moving to St Croix; my husband has just taken a job there and I'm very very excited about living in the Caribbean. I was born and raised in Pismo Beach California and have lived in Las Vegas for 27 years and I am done with the desert! I can put up with higher cost-of-living to just be near the ocean breezes. Thank you this blog is awesome!
Great video and tutorial on moving to the islands. I was going to ask so many questions but you really covered everyone I thought as the video went along. I never realized it was so crazy expensive to live there on all fronts. That is certainly an adjustment to live on the island.
Thank You! A lot of it depends on which island you want to be on. Also, we wanted to be on the beach so our housing expenses could be less. But, I didn't want to move to an island and be farther away from the beach than when I lived in Florida. It's like everything else in life... Trade-offs and compromises.
Thanks for being so candid and open I always come back and review a lot of the information you have given and It is very helpful when making a decision to move to any island it also has given me a lot of food for thought and has helped me to decide where we would like to move in a few years in addition to ensuring that we have enough money saved for a lot of the incidentals that you have mentioned thank you very much
Excellent video! I am a new subscriber. You answered questions that I didn’t know I had! I will be moving to St. Thomas within the next 6 months. Are you still there? Can you please help my husband and I with a rental?
You provide some great information, but anyone considering a move to the Caribbean from the US should understand that St. Thomas is a US Territory. If you're considering a move to the ABCs, St. Kitts, Grenada, or another Caribbean island country that's not a US Territory, it's much more complicated and MUCH more expensive. Most of them will require Citizenship by Investment to live there full time, and that can cost Tens or even Hundreds of Thousands of dollars to make happen.
Wow!! great video, I been viewing island videos for a couple of years and yours is one of the best. You may want to add comments about healthcare and schools, optional. This might be your niche.......
Wow so many things to consider. That is pretty crazy you had to bring your stuff to one port and your car to another. Just the cost of the cars was quite a bit.
Thank you for your very accurate information. I recommend that people see this video if they’re thinking about moving to any island. Before moving there, remind people to make sure the job there is sustainable. Lockdown that decent paying job first. St. Thomas is known for tourism. St. John is known for nature. St. Croix is a combination of both and it’s larger and flatter. Reminder: If you’re moving to a foreign island, remember to check on a work visa. 😊
This was great! Very thoughtful and informative. Thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us. I’m not sure what island I’ll land on, but sooner or later I’ll figure it out! Best of luck! -M
@@How2Beach I am curious about why you chose St. Thomas? The cost of living does seem very high. If nothing is grown locally, groceries are indeed going to be a fortune. I kept thinking: I would plant strawberries (etc.) immediately. lol
@@moremustard Ha, we live in a condo with now balcony so no strawberries for me. My wife put out resumes to several places and this was the first place that offered her a job so we moved here. There wasn't any other thought put into where we were going to move. We had never been here and knew nothing about this island. But we love it here.
@@How2Beach Cool, makes sense. One of the criteria for me will be to find a place to live where I could grow some of my own food, if it was not easily/readily available. I like the idea of a farmer's market not too far away from wherever I live (makes it easy to eat healthy).
Great video. I'm a realtor in the U.S. thinking of relocating to a US territorial island in a few years. Any tips on becoming licensed and getting business up and going outside of the U.S mainland? That might be a great video...
That's a good idea. I have another channel where I talk about real estate and investing that it would work on. Here is a link. ruclips.net/channel/UC0Ig1pIrQ5gfitU4pGmIEhg But to answer your question. It's the same as it would be in the mainland. I still have my FL license so I just had to take the VI test and pay them money. And then it's just like starting out as a new agent with now clients and no contacts. But, I'm optimistic.
I have my licence also. Im from PA. Im going to move back to St. Croix once I get my first couple of rental properties on the mainland. It's so expensive to live and as an agent, as we know, you only make money via sales! So think about how you're going to live in between sales. I think it's worth the hassle but if you haven't been to the island, visit 1st! Try to stay for a month to get a feel for everything. WAPA! Be ready for the bull$h¡T. Okay! Hurricanes. Crime is a thing too. Still the positives outweigh the negatives. Do your research. Visit 1st. Make some contacts. Buy don't rent.
I’m seriously considering moving to St. Thomas in a few years. My mom is from tutu. I will reach out to you once I decide to move. Your videos are awesome 🤩
My friends stuffed their cars before shopping. They covered the windows. Use paradise freight, get your stuff to Miami on Thursday and the boat arrives Tuesday. You can Amazon ship it to Paradise freight and they load it up.
This was great! I remember going through all of this. Our total cost was 10k to get St Croix. Island time is no joke but it did teach me to slow down. I’m glad that you talked about the power. The cost of food is stupid high also. You have true friends with us brother! For life. I really enjoyed this because we lived it. Great vlog!
Thanks man! Ironically the power is out right now, and it went out 3 times while I was trying to upload this. It was so aggravating because this video was so long it took all day to get this thing uploaded to RUclips.
Hey guys, thank you for this video! So much info! I’m thinking about doing sort of the same type of thing to make a change in my life as well, sell most of my junk and move to St Maarten. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you have saved up in your account (after moving expenses were paid) before you pulled the trigger and moved to the islands? I would like to get a rough idea of how much to save before moving out there if possible. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!
@@michaeltreece5477 Thanks. That's awesome. Some times you have to shake it up. We didn't have a ton of money saved up but we do have rental income from some rental properties we have in the States. It's not cheap and there are not a lot of jobs. I just did a video over on my other RUclips Channel about our income from rentals. Here is a link to that channel. www.RUclips.com/theretirementality
@@How2Beach I really wasn't aware of the costs and the power outages. I figured the logistics were going to be a struggle. It all adds up to way too much hassle. Things could certainly change. So we're not entirely out!!
Thank you for the video; it was very informative. I am seriously considering moving to the USVI this year. I have been visiting St. Thomas since 2015 and said I will be moving there when I retire. I was there in August 2020 to make a final decision and decided I wanted to see St. Croix before I pull the trigger. I will be visiting St. Croix in April 2021 and then I will make the final decision but I think it will be St. Croix. I have liked your video and I will subscribe. Thanks again; feel free to provide any additional information or referrals.
We are starting a new RUclips channel just for real estate stuff. I'm editing our first video right now. So stay tuned to this channel and I'll be linking to it.
I'm glad you brought up "island time." I'm a pretty laid-back and tolerant guy, but sitting in the McDonald's (Charlotte Amalie) drive-thru lane and getting my food for 20 minutes at 3:30pm -- a regular occurance -- is something beyond excessive. That's just some of the fun things about living in St. Thomas. Yeah, paradise.
Sounds like a nightmare lol I’m scared to move to the islands now! I was born in trinidad but haven’t been there since a child thinking about retiring there, thanks so much for the detailed info! God bless you and your family and stay safe
Sounds like you need to see about opening a grocery store and use shipping containers to get the stuff to you. One truck load of produce sounds like it would be a great investment. 9$ for a thing of peanut butter. A shipping container can hold probably ten thousand of them. 2$ a pail of peanut butter equals 7 dollars profit. Or 70,000 profit. Cucumber, tomatoes, oranges etc... Good luck and I wish you and yours the best.
Ha a true entrepreneur, like myself. I like your style. We've settled in and leaned how to find a few more deals now that we've been on the island a while. I've done an update to this one after being on the island for a year.
@@How2Beach watching your video gave me a idea to look into myself. Thank you. Just listened to what you said and thought. Cheap shipping a container and you can buy clothes cheap in the states. Good luck and enjoy
@@How2Beach Yes Sir, sounds like a beer. I'm hoping to be in the usvi, Puerto Rico area in a year or so. Getting ready to purchase a boat and refit her.
This is a great introduction to moving to the Caribbean. I’ve gotten so many calls on shipping my vehicle & house hold items. Now the hard part! Which one to select?
Thank you, I’ve narrowed it down to three Blue, Freight & FedEx...lol! Most companies don’t want to give you a quote upfront, so I’m not even interested with them. I found a repair shop that works on Jaguars. Your information & video production are either fun to look at or leaves me in suspense trying to guess what you’re going to say next. You never disappoint! 3 months later you’ve kept me on track & I’m finally ready! 🤝👍
Good luck, there’s a waiting list of about 2 years and locals get first priority. If your on Section 8 you’d never be able to make it there. Take your average monthly expenses and double and triple some things.
Please don't do that. You will regret it. Do not move as a single mother to a place you know nothing about with a young boy where crime and drugs are growing and already need gov't assistance. Unless you're from the VI or rich, you will not make it financially. I say this as a Cruzan with a single mom who struggles to make ends meet for our family.
Wowwww this makes me reconsider moving to the caribbean 🤣 that’s a lot of stuff to consider!!! Wow! thank you for all that information!! Perhaps I’ll look into a diff island lol.
Do you mean what are the people called? People from the Virgin Islands are called Virgin Islanders and based on the island of residence are called St. Thomian, St. Johnian, Crucian and Water Islanders respectively.
How2beach, thanks for a very informative video. My wife and I are moving from Florida to St. Croix next Spring and the info on shipping our car and that of pallets was very helpful as we were planning on shipping our personal effects on the plane and paying the extra charge for each bag. This let's us know of a cheaper way. The cost of living info was also good, we spent one week on the island last summer and could say that most of the blogs I read indicate a 30% above mainland cost is quite accurate (except power of course!).
@@How2Beach Out time to travel is fast approaching. Who did you use as your agent for the vehicles and who was the shipping company you dealt with for shipping the cars and the pallets? Thanks.
Some great tips and reminders shared! A specific example of the daylight hours. Although STX isn't on daylight savings times, it always then gets dark at about 6 pm. Listening to the video, I'm amazed that you packed only a 4x4 pallet. I see the value in that, but we are in process of moving if not permanently, at least 5-10 years. I have two questions, 1) how did you find the 3rd party shipping brokers? and 2) where are the documents at you mentioned? I do not see them listed here. We are in process of packing and prepping to ship our household to STX. I know we are taking more than we need to, even more than want to LOL We definitely need a cargo container. Good point on daylight ending at 6 pm, and vehicles. We've visited several times before purchasing our house -- driving and parking two different vehicles and congratulations to you on deciding on your vehicle. We had one, unfortunately now between our two vehicles - we are taking the truck (road) but the car would be easier to park.
My wife just started making phone calls to shipping companies and I'm not really sure how she ended up on the one she choose. I know it wans't just price because some had bad reviews about things like cars that were dropped from forklifts. You will find that you don't need as much stuff as you did on the mainland. Good luck with the move.
If you are still there on STT, I was wondering if you have a website for your available rental properties? We most likely not buy a home until we've been there at least a year and can get a good feel of which area we'd like best. This video was very helpful!!
Thanks so much for this video! And thanks for the lists in the comments. We are moving to Puerto Rico in November. Things are easier to come by and less expensive there, but everything you talked about translates well on some level and was super helpful. We've landed a rental with a generator! And from watching your Puerto Rico secret fishing spot video, it looks like you might be living near Humacao. We are headed to Palmas del Mar. From Boise! We are neighbors both ways, Montana!
That's awesome! I bought a house in Humacao a couple of months ago. I have another RUclips channel where I posted a video about how to buy a house in Puerto Rico. Try searching "Retirementality Puerto Rico" and I'm sure you'll find it. I did a couple of videos about Puerto Rico on that channel. Keep in touch!
Fantastic! And I will definitely be looking for that video :-) I took lots of notes from this video last night and will be sharing them with my husband when he gets in tonight. He flew down to St George Utah to pick up a truck we bought for shipping to PR :-)
Are you going to do an update on monthly expenses? That would be super helpful! Moving back to STT after 15 years and would love to hear current/ realistic expenses. Happy to find your channel!
Thanks for all this info! Subscribed :) My wife and I are looking to move to the USVIs by the end of the year. The tip about shipping a pallet is great - do you have a company you recommend? I will also reach out to you separately on FB to inquire about rentals
I'm glad it was helpful. We used Crowley to ship the pallet. You can refer back to the article on the same topic on my website too. www.how2beach.com Summer is the best time to look for rentals. Although there are a lot more rentals on the market right now.
There are a few Facebook groups that have a lot of information on moving, living, work, and pretty much anything you want to know about the virgin islands. Good luck.
I lied... I just asked my wife and she said we used Crowley to ship the pallet. I'd call them both and get a quote. And I think I would have shipped two pallets if I had it to do over. But, it is also a good exercise to figure out what you really need. You do learn that you don't need so much crap when you live on an island.
How2Beach I want to relocate to the USVI. I haven’t decided if I want to reside to STX or STT. However, given I’m a single mom with a preschooler I am leaning more towards STX. One of my concern is the job market. I’m wondering if I could find a great job as a Transportation and Logistics Management professional.
Thank you so much for addressing some of the issues of living on an island. I would have never guess about the power being so expensive, the mold issues, the outages of power and internet, etc
This was incredibly informative. Been considering relocating to Sint Maarten in the next year as a family of 5 and 2 dogs. You make it sound like no picnic or pleasure cruise!! As much as we are looking to get someplace away from the current political climate in the states perhaps we would be in for more than we were willing to bargain for. Three kids in middle school on top of everything you shared sounds like a lot of stress.
You can read through the comments. I think most people who have done it agree this is pretty accurate. I'm not trying to say it is worth it or not, as that is something that is different for everyone. But, I can say for, we are glad we did it.
Thanks for making the video, it's very informative. Can you please tell me the name of party/company you used to ship that 4X4X4 pallet to the island? We're moving and really need their services for all the items we need to move with us - thanks
Just found your Chanel. We are from Ohio and moved to Maui (and back) and are familiar with shipping, logistics, moving to an island, etc.. We are now wanting to move to St. Thomas but we aren’t sure if we can get a mortgage or how to do it. We have heard it’s a process. Honestly we’d prefer to rent for a year to make sure it’s where we want to be but don’t know how to find a long term rental. That’s where we need advice. Can you offer help in that aspect?
Dec. is the start of the high season so there may be less on the market but with the state of the world right now there are not many people here so you should be fine. Depends on your budget and what you are looking for.
A couple of questions. What is the cost for the rest of the utilities like garbage collection? I hear most water is from cisterns (rain water). Do most homes have septic tanks then? So you posted the cost for the cars when you first got there but what about annual cost like renewals? Do you need any license to do work as a contractor?
There is no garbage collection. Most houses are on Cisterns. Car renewals and things depend on the car you have. And yes, you'd need a license to work as a contractor.
The cars are ship from Rivera beach Florida through Tropical shipping. I think the local farmers at the western end of st thomas would think differently when you say that nothing is grown there. Additionally, i have always gotten fresh produce from fruit bowl or cost u less.
We didn't use Tropical for the cars. I made this video when we moved here and I had not been to the fruit bowl and still find it hard to find good produce. I'll be doing a follow up video soon though.
Great video very informative thank you…quick question what was the name of the shipping company that you used to ship your personal belongings? I’m currently in the process of relocating to Grand Cayman Island for work. Any info would be greatly appreciated.!!!
I would like to buy 10-20 acres with some beach access to set up a small resort.. Does that exist there or any suggestion on what island that would be best for? 🍻
@@How2Beach I really appreciate the response. I'm pretty confident in my ability to raise capital, but for now, just want to start with wherever the lesser expensive options may be and work from there. I'm not sure what that number really looks like. I've found a couple areas on Roatan for under $1M.
That's the other funny thing you bring up: the crazy thing about prices. Good, healthy foods cost a serious arm amd a leg, but the things that will put you in an early grave are dirt cheap. A pack of Marloboros is 9nly $5 and liquor (and stay away from the Cruzan rum. It smells and tastes like the cheap household cleaner that's popular here) is actually cheaper than on the mainland -- which isn't going to helo when you discover hospital care here is basically thord world stuff. And God Help You if you have a serious stroke or get into a hideous car wreck -- which is why one of the first things to buy here if kedical flight insurance, because an uninsured medflight alone will set you back a good $25,000.
You can have the water truck come and fill your tank up. Most people get by without it. Be sure to subscribe, I"m going to do an update video soon. I don't miss the snow at all. Let me know if you need help looking for a property too.
It depends on if you are planing to hike in to see the beaches, if you have your own car, or if you are planning on taking taxi's. The easiest beaches to see that are beautiful are Magens, Lindquist, and Sapphire on STT and Honeymoon on STJ.
I've been having the hardest time trying to find info about how to ship our stuff at the port. Did you use Port Miami? I'd like to send our things on pallets myself, but I don't know how to do it. I'm sure I don't just show up down there with a bunch of boxes! Can you help?
I lived, off and on, on St. Croix for 23 years. Just move back to states 2 years ago. There’s a familiar saying there. How to leave St. Croix will a million dollars? Bring 2 million. It’s expensive. Especially during high power bills at 53 cents pkh and after hurricanes feeding your generator. Oh, and feeding your generator when power is out frequently. Shopping online at Dillards and Macy’s is easy. Don’t bring everything, you’ll be broke when you leave, unless you are rich, and must leave it there. And, you will leave one day. Many reasons, ill and aging parents, grandchildren, job, whatever, you will will eventually leave. Few have stayed for more that several years. Editing to add that St. Croix is an Agricultural island and has plenty of fresh farmers markets!
@@How2Beach It had its ups and downs, especially through several major hurricanes. Overall, I wouldn’t have left when I did, but, my husband passed away and I was just too far away from my family in the states. Also, most of my dearest friends had left and many had passed away. When I met a new best friend in ‘11, I told her we’d be saying goodbye one day. She said, no, why? I said, something, like illness, children having grands, money, or lack of and hurricanes will eventually get you leaving. She and her husband left STX in November ‘17 right after Irmaria! And her daughter was expecting her first grandchild. Many come thinking they’ll have healthcare and leave when they find they can’t get any. I’ve known a few, ship everything there and buy a home and are gone in 3 months. Paradise is not a vacation unless you don’t have to work. Most bartenders I know have college degrees and real estate agents are a dime a dozen. My husband and I were not financially dependent on making our money on island. Most can’t say that and must work. Good jobs are few and far between for new residents. I’ve seen more come and go in 23 years than I’ve ever seen come and stay that long. Many come thinking they can start a new business right away and reality sets in when after 6 months they still have not been able to acquire a business license. It’s not for everyone and it’s very expensive.
@@rosemarydolliver Yea, I've had several friends leave in the short time I've been there. But I've lived in Ski Resorts and other beach towns that are more transient places. It's sucks but I guess I'm more used to it. There is no perfect place. And every place is what you make it.
My wife and I would like to speak with you about renting a place. Why did you choose Thomas over Croix? I am a plumber by trade, wife a nurse. What are jobs like? Thank you for the video!
My wife got a teaching job here. We had never been here. She just started applying for jobs and this was the first place that offered her one. Shoot me an email at Jeff@BuyTheVI.com
Very informative! Where’s a good place to see what jobs are available there? And if going for a trip to scout out jobs/places to stay/etc before moving there, how long would you recommend that trip be?
I search for Facebook groups and look at Indeed for jobs. There is FB group called St Thomas/St. John jobs that I know of, there may be more. I'd stay as long as you can. It probably won't take too long to find a place to stay. I'm a Realtor and I can help you find a place too.
This may be a stupid question but how tough is it to order stuff off Amazon and have it sent to St. Thomas? How about medical care on the Island or do most folks fly to the mainland? I am retired US Military and receive all my care now through a civilian hospital.
I’m thinking about taking a 3 month travel job there. I’m not sure if im making the right decision. I’ll be by myself. How safe is the island? Is all food expensive? Weighing my options
The island is safe. Like anywhere, there are some places you don't want to go. But, overall its safe. I think for 3 months you would have fun. You will want a car so you'd want to figure out the logistics before you get here.
I would guess that most of it is pretty accurate. The size of the island would make a difference. And this island is a US territory, so that would impact the ease of some of the process. I'd say to look for Facebook groups of the island you are considering and find some advice there.
Hi! Are there any thrift shops or places like goodwill where i could buy used pots/pans? And how much does delivery usually cost through amazon? Say, for little stuff like a pair of shoes
Thanks for this eye opening video. You don’t really think about the cost of peanut butter or availability of fresh vegetables, on island. These things really add up. The saying; “if it were easy, everyone would do it” comes to mind. Sending gratitude from Boston.....
Glad you liked it. I use that phrase all the time. We love it here.
Thanks for your honesty. Best wishes. I wonder if there any local churches that you could go to to meet people?
Thank you so much for making this video. I have been contemplating on moving to St. Thomas, in a couple of years, and wanted to get quality information other than what I've found on the internet. I'm glad you covered the cost and the issue with the power; I had no idea. You touched on several things that put this move into perspective for me. I really appreciate this.

Thank you!
Great info!! Definitely research everything before you move and ask questions to everybody! Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks for watching.
Love your video. We moved to the Bahamas a few years ago and your advice is spot on!
Thanks. I figure that it should apply to most Caribbean Islands.
I still get a little unnerved.
so helpful!!! ive been thinking about st croix for sometime now but this was really informative. thank you for sharing
@@btownes5632 Most of this info should translate to STX pretty well.

I’m from the usvi there is tons of things to do on island and tons of cool adventures and hikes
Great point. Thanks.

Before moving there, remind people to make sure the job there is sustainable. Lockdown that decent paying job first.
St. Thomas is known for tourism. St. John is known for nature. St. Croix is a combination of both and it’s larger and flatter.

@@How2Beach I am curious about why you chose St. Thomas? The cost of living does seem very high. If nothing is grown locally, groceries are indeed going to be a fortune. I kept thinking: I would plant strawberries (etc.) immediately. lol

@@How2Beach Cool, makes sense. One of the criteria for me will be to find a place to live where I could grow some of my own food, if it was not easily/readily available. I like the idea of a farmer's market not too far away from wherever I live (makes it easy to eat healthy).

But to answer your question.
Okay! Hurricanes. The cost of living info was also good, we spent one week on the island last summer and could say that most of the blogs I read indicate a 30% above mainland cost is quite accurate (except power of course!).
That's awesome. Congrats on your decision to become islanders. I'm glad the video was helpful.
@@How2Beach Out time to travel is fast approaching. Who did you use as your agent for the vehicles and who was the shipping company you dealt with for shipping the cars and the pallets? Thanks.
@@How2Beach Also, with regard to the pallets, how did you get them, who pack them, how are they delivered to the shipping company? Thks.
Thanks for the informative video. What is the process of purchasing a house on the island?
It works like it does in the mainland it just takes a little longer. I'm a Realtor so if you need help let me know.
thanks so much! this was very helpful!!
You are welcome. I'm glad you liked it. Stay tuned for info.
Thanks, great video lots of important info. I'm NEVER moving to the Caribbean. Scratch that off the list...
Ha, I'll have an update video coming out soon. I've here 18 months now.
I lived in St Thomas for about a year , it can be very rough down there. Be careful in Charlotte Amalie , petty crime is high.
When did you live here?
Omg it sounds really hard and expensive moving out there...I think I would just stay as a visitor.. just go for vacation...🤦♀️
It's not for everyone. But I love it here.
Thank you for being realistic
I'm glad it was helpful. I"m still here. Shoot me an email Jeff@FindABeachHouse.com
Can you send me information regarding houses that are for sale in Saint Thomas.
Of course. Send me an email and tell me a little about what you are looking for and what kind of a budget you're working with. Jeff@BuyTheVi.com
Great info
Thanks be sure to subscribe and check out the update video I made after being on the island for a year.
I enjoyed this video and thanks for the info! Next time no background music is needed.
Thanks for the feedback, and for watching.
And by the way... He's really excited about doing some fishing.
@@vickiboise I have a blog with most of the info on my website too. You can see it at www.How2Beach.com
@@vickiboise I went to a little bar by the old pier in Punta Santiago and the guys in the bar were happy to give me fishing tips.
Are you going to do an update on monthly expenses? That would be super helpful! Moving back to STT after 15 years and would love to hear current/ realistic expenses. Happy to find your channel!
Yes, I will be doing some updates soon. If you subscribe and ring the bell, it will give you a notification when I put out a new video.
Also... I'm a Realtor, I can help you look for a house when you are ready.
Good luck.
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL. NO I WILL NEVER MOVE THERE.
Yea, it's not for everyone.
Hello. This video was super helpful. Can you tell me what company you used to ship the 48 cu ft pallet?
Great. I love to hear it was helpful. We used Tropical to ship the pallet.
I lied... I just asked my wife and she said we used Crowley to ship the pallet. I'd call them both and get a quote. And I think I would have shipped two pallets if I had it to do over. But, it is also a good exercise to figure out what you really need. You do learn that you don't need so much crap when you live on an island.
How2Beach thanks again. I’ll call both! We contemplated bringing everything to selling everything. This pallet idea is a good in between!
@@neallr Yea, you'll be glad you brought some stuff with you.
Be sure to subscribe and I'll do an update video of how we adjusted.
Thanks for watching I'm glad you found you found it helpful. The company we used for shipping the pallet was Crowley.
Thank you so much for this informative video!!! What company did you use to ship your pallets? Thanks 🤙🏼🌅🌊
Be sure to subscribe and check out the update videos. It was Crowley
Shoot me an email and I'll answer some questions for you. info@How2Beach.com
Good job
Thanks
Hello im trying to move there in Dec 2020. Is it hard to find a place to rent in the ilands???
Dec. is the start of the high season so there may be less on the market but with the state of the world right now there are not many people here so you should be fine.
Thanks for watching. We used Crowley. They probably go there too. Check out my update video to this one. It has good info too.
I would like to buy 10-20 acres with some beach access to set up a small resort.. Does that exist there or any suggestion on what island that would be best for? 🍻
What is your budget?
@@How2Beach I really appreciate the response. I'm pretty confident in my ability to raise capital, but for now, just want to start with wherever the lesser expensive options may be and work from there. I'm not sure what that number really looks like. I've found a couple areas on Roatan for under $1M.
@@hockeyandrew3206 $1m isn't going to get you 5 acres in the USVI without beach access.
@@How2Beach that is what i suspected I'll research more to figure out what it would be. Thank you
That's the other funny thing you bring up: the crazy thing about prices.
When your water runs out. And there isn't much rain how do you get water for house hold usages. Funny Im comming from Montana. Whitefish ski area.
You can have the water truck come and fill your tank up. Most people get by without it. Be sure to subscribe, I"m going to do an update video soon. I don't miss the snow at all. Let me know if you need help looking for a property too.
I like this
Thanks Yolanda!
My family is moving to St. Thomas at the end of the month. Do you mind sharing which company you used to ship your pallet and car? Thank you.
We used Crowley to ship the pallet and a private broker to ship to the car but I can't remember his name.
@@How2Beach thank you so much for your quick response. So helpful!
Hey bud I enjoyed ur video. I am going on vacation to st thomas. Can you tell me the must visit beaches between st thomas and at john .thank you
It depends on if you are planing to hike in to see the beaches, if you have your own car, or if you are planning on taking taxi's. The easiest beaches to see that are beautiful are Magens, Lindquist, and Sapphire on STT and Honeymoon on STJ.
Did you shrink wrap the pallet or do they do it. What secures the contents of the pallet. Thanks.
They shrink wrapped it. I'm probably going to be doing an update video soon.
Great information on everything, thank you! But the music was too loud and distracting to hear you clearly.
Thanks.
We are looking to move there julyb2021. We will need a realtor
Sweet. I'm your man. Shoot me an email at Jeff@BuytheVI.com and we can start to chat about what is on your wishlist.
I've been having the hardest time trying to find info about how to ship our stuff at the port. Did you use Port Miami? I'd like to send our things on pallets myself, but I don't know how to do it. I'm sure I don't just show up down there with a bunch of boxes! Can you help?
It was over 3 years ago when I did it. I know things have changed a lot since then. Try calling Crowly.
But, did you enjoy your 23 years?
@how2beach
Do you still have real estate contracts in the VI’s?
Possibly... are you looking to rent or buy?
I am retired US Military and receive all my care now through a civilian hospital.
you can order Amazon but you don't get free shipping. You can pay for insurance to heli you to the mainland if you need emergency medical work.
be sure to subscribe to get updates. I'm going to do a one year update.
hi my name is Freddie
I’m thinking about taking a 3 month travel job there. I’m not sure if im making the right decision. I’ll be by myself. How safe is the island? Is all food expensive? Weighing my options
The island is safe. Like anywhere, there are some places you don't want to go. But, overall its safe. I think for 3 months you would have fun. You will want a car so you'd want to figure out the logistics before you get here.
@@How2Beach thank you. The company said they would give me a rental car and property.
How much of what you shared varies greatly from island to island in the Caribbean?
I would guess that most of it is pretty accurate. The size of the island would make a difference. And this island is a US territory, so that would impact the ease of some of the process. I'd say to look for Facebook groups of the island you are considering and find some advice there.
Do the same things apply to St. Croix?
Yea, I'd say so.
Hi! Are there any thrift shops or places like goodwill where i could buy used pots/pans? And how much does delivery usually cost through amazon? Say, for little stuff like a pair of shoes
There is a thrift store near the CostULess. Shipping for something like a pair of shoes would be $5-10.
Your Island is very remote. Nassau Has everything.
Nassau is nice. It has a little more of a big Island vibe than STT.
Did you have to get re-licensed in St. Thomas?
Yes, its a pain in the butt too.
how much was the cost to ship each pallet of 4x4x4 ?thank you
I think they were about $150 each but I bet it's more expensive now.
Hi. Could I talk to you about possibly relocating in 2025
Sure, shoot me an email at info@how2beach.com
Has anything changed since this video? I am a realtor in Texas
Yes, you can email me if you want. Jeff@FindABeachHouse.com
Who did you use to ship your skid
I think it was crowley.
Why don't people fish off shore here? Are there no creeks to fish in?
There are no creeks and most beaches have coral off them so you can't fish from most beaches. There are a couple of spots you can fish from.
