Some few are born without it. That could lead to an array of disabilities, but sometimes these people can be very smart or good in skills regardless of this condition. It would be interesting to learn about something and then finding out you don’t have it.
I took anatomy but never had a cadaver lab. Now I realize why they do it. Seeing it in it’s real forms is much easier to understand than diagrams and drawings.
My Daughter was born without it, we found out during the pregnancy and went through months and months of hell having tests, scans etc, she's now 5 and since birth she's showed no signs at all of anything wrong, she's the most amazing friendly, clever, funny girl, constantly asking questions, creating things and wanting to learn,
My son past away with a rare genetic disorder called zellweger syndrome this was missing in his brain but was told people can live a normal life without ever knowing they don't have one. The human body is amazing
Terribly sorry for your loss Kizzy. My wife was also born without this part of her brain. I don't know if I would classify her as normal, ha ha, but she gets along just fine without it.
When this is cut in seizure patients, the two hemispheres act independent of each other. It's a fascinating study of neural science. You basically have two people inside of you. One can talk, the other cannot
No, it's not like two people inside of you. Your brain does not split into two personalities. Your two sides will act independently because they are not able to communicate with each other like they use to. This is called Alien Hand Syndrome.

They used to cut the corpus callosum in people with severe epilepsy. A lot of the “split brain” patients were normal, except their visual field was different!
Funny you should describe it like that given that neuroanatomists usually describe the cellular circuitry there like a garden with deep (purkinje) cells that run to the brain forming deep roots that branch out to basket cells and interneurons at the extremity forming a complex canopy of interwoven foliage that behaves in its own way to refine movements and refine cognition
Love this channel, but I think it's time to record full lectures and help me and all others save lives and empty out non-emergency from emergency waiting rooms. I wanna learn more, way more.
I just can't imagine the skills and guts required to create these precise cross sections. You really don't want to mess it up, because then you'll have to scrap the body and go get another one. 😅
Severing the corpus callosum can have some funky effects such as not being aware of objects in our left visual field buy still reacting to them. Someone with a severed corpus callosum could be driving a car and not see cars to their left but still maneuver to avoid them.
Amazing, can you demonstrate the connection of optical nerve to the spine in the middle of the brain in less than a minute? It's for my personal science resouces about Eye's Healt Thanks
My first instinct was to pat the top of my head, because huh, didn't know about the film between the two hemispheres. I then tried to 'feel' this filmy stuff, and forgot brains can't feel anything. (Imagine if they could, though. Feeling your brain would be worse than suddenly becoming aware of your breathing.) Also! I'll never get over how compactly arranged our whole skull situation is. Like, if you prod around up your nose just a liiiittle too far, you could trigger a full-on system shutdown.
I was suprised to learn that that connective tissue is even there. I'd either missed it in anatomy textbooks, or only witnessed dissections of removed & cleaned brains.
Can you make any comment about how the skull was prepared? Was it a saw or a knife or a laser? It just looks like the cut is so precisely clean and absolutely perfect which is indicative of very expensive equipment. I know Doctor that you're an Anatomist, but perhaps you could say something about the preparation of the sample.

BTW...the words derive from Latin. "Corpus" - means body. "Callosum" - means "call + o + sum". So, translating, we have "Call", or communication; "o" is a contraction for "of or that"; and "sum" is a contraction for "join" or "added". In total we have "a body that joins or adds two parts together".
