I worked as a commercial aquarium fish collector for 29 years. We used to use a fine net over bucket, divided down the centre with a hand spear rubber that allowed you to put your hand in and release fish, and the rubber would stiffen up to keep the gap closed.
It’s a game changer I wasn’t allowed to film the collection buckets while we were up collecting for ORMA that was Simon’s secret 🤣 Makes the world of difference 🤙🏽 Awesome vid Adam
Excellent idea Adam, I have exactly the same bucket (bunnings) I brought a solar, battery, usb portable air pump from AliExpress, and like you said drilled a few holes in the lid to poke the air line through, I don't skin dive anymore and besides my coast from here in rural Western Australia is about 150kms away, I use my bucket to go shopping at pet stores with to give my tropicals a safe journey home, I can put the air pump on the vans dash and solar keeps the battery topped up, but your idea of the hinged flap is brilliant at the fish shop alone the ability to just carefully put the fish into the bucket without buggerising around with that tight fitting lid every time is as you said a game changer, especially to check on the fish periodically without having to even touch the bucket causing more distress has to also be appreciated for them. Thank you for the good old fair Dinkum Aussie invention! Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Hey Tony, do you reckon it’s up there with the Hills Hoist? Maybe not. However I can’t claim credit for the concept…, I’m just observant! What’s your closest coastal town?
@@australianaquarist pretty close Adam (I have scars to prove how good the Hills hoist was grin don't ask 😁 but definitely a lot better than the old hand push mower that we had to physically push. Not sure but it might even be up their with VEGEMITE!
I’ve had a few viewers ask for underwater videos of the collecting sites. I actually planned on taking the GoPro with me on this trip, but found that the batteries were ready for the bin. Although I’m happy to make videos on the fish life around my coastal reefs, and do so from the perspective of an aquarist, I am hesitant to film collecting itself. The collecting process is chaotic and I do so alone. I’m not sure how quality the footage would be and how useful it would be. I have thought about setting the GoPro on a tripod and lead weights and set it on Timelapse to record my activities in the area. Tell me what you think. Let me know what sort of underwater videos you’d like to see. I’m very conscious that they’d need to be from the perspective of an aquarist.
Yeah! Love it mate. Another video idea short of the hard work of trying to video fish collection itself: What areas are great for collecting fish around where you live, and tips for doing so.
@@australianaquarist Getting an understanding of the kinds of rockpools, etc certain fish get find in would be nice even if my area doesn't have one maybe?
I used to have a bucket that was similar to this when I kept marines years ago, it was a plastic mesh bucket that fit in another bucket, the liner mesh bucket had a opening lid to put your fish in and you could keep that sitting in the water until you went home and then you could put it into the other bucket with the clean water, it was an awesome setup, I got it from a bait shop and haven't seen one since, it wasn't exactly cheap but was really good for collecting.
Sounds like a neat design. Just thought that I could have made this lid with your Bunnings bucket. That way you’d have a nifty little perk, for when you get your bucket back……
@@australianaquarist Hahaha, nothing worse then having to try and open them when your in a rush, I recon who ever designed them is sitting back laughing at all us fishos 🤣
Very creative. Fun little project. Also affordable. Great job. Also next time you are out and about throw on a GoPro or similar camera if you think about it to share how you go about it. Probably would be fun. If nothing else would be able to see your beautiful reefs. Haven't made it out your way to dive yet but on my list. Fiji in December though - couldn't pull off any other stops due to schedule though.
I built something similar to this, the lid was the biggest challenge, but what you used will be better, I used 32mm pipe with pool noodle stuffed in it and sealed it make the system more compact, as I was more in rockpools.
Would love to see the footage of you collecting fish! Or even just some tidepool exploration. Can't do that sort of thing in rural America so i need to live it through you!
I’ll work on it. I try to do the best with editing my videos, which would be hard with that style of video. But I think I’ve just got to get over that!
Heya, question, is there a reason you don't show the capture and the shallow water? It would be really nice if you could share this type of content as aquarist perspective, you have beautiful wonder around you.
hey Mate @australianaquarist you should put them on to my youtube for the ppl who would like to see the action of recreational collecting till you get something happening

nice DIY collecting bucket. I'll keep this in mind if I ever live in a tropical place again. :)

would it be easy for you while snorkeling to get a mask that has the gopro attachment on top like mine so hands a free ?
Just texted you about that!

Hmmm
Can do. How do I make it universally appealing to aquarists who don’t know the area?

Very flash Adam. Another possible use could be a mouse trap for the shed when you're no out collecting?
Bit of peanut butter on the lid. Have to be a rat I reckon
I was planning on asking about this, just couldn't figure out the right wording.
