these animations were poorly used, snoot game managed to express situations with sound effects and two character frames really well
The quality of Goodbye Volcano High makes way more sense when you learn it was funded by the Canadian government, and the project was basically just to create jobs and not create art.
Also that it was pushed to show, the graphics and capability of the PS5, that right there is what cause more of the mockery than anything else. GVH graphics look like something from the PS3, and even by that console it would look outdated.
The sad reality is that GVH is and was a “virtue signaling” project.

4chan is so weird, either they commit several war crimes, or they manage to get a criminal arrested because they found their location from a single pixel, or in this case, making a version of a game that is way better than the source material.

That's the thing about 4chan - its selling point is the fact you can remain anonymous, no matter what. That has the consequence of attracting bad people who stay anonymous to avoid consequences for their actions, but those aren't the only type of people who want to be anonymous.
4chan is Chaotic Neutral along with being a truly pluralistic place for free speech. Nobody gives a damn about anything since you can say everything there...as long as you post in the proper image boards.

Honestly, 4chan feels line as close as you can get to an organic internet community these days. It does what it wants, and sometimes what it wants is not at all what you expect.

I think that is due to people actually being anonymous that makes it feel organic. Other sites incentivizes stuff like clout chasing because they can monetize it. Also look at the videos people used to upload on RUclips at least a decade ago. A good amount was just people sharing stuff. Now alot of people are just chasing trends and alot of videos feel formulaic with the same stupid thumbnail trying to get the algorithm to push their content. I miss the old RUclips where you could stumble upon some crazy stuff from time to time.
That's because it's difficult to astroturf on 4Chan when it's pretty anonymous and decentralized.
Too bad some of the mods are literal tr00ns with biases that selectively delete/ignore threads to create an artificial narrative around specific topics or the fact that /pol/ is just a spam field for FBI and Mossad.

The comments mostly agree, although there are several from people who actually did try Snoot Game. They all say "it takes itself seriously and plays everything straight" in one way or another. Most of the thoughtful comments are hidden behind the "pending" filter, where they've been sitting for over a year now.
If I had dollar for every time 4Chan chose to make a Dating Sim with a subject that could end up being handled very poorly and the end result was a game that was for all intents and purposes good, if not great, I would have 2 dollars, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I would honestly feel that the game was about “Trans issues” (not risking using the s-word, as RUclips has deleted my comments on other occasions) if they actually showed us more of the “discrimination” of being Trans, but we never really see it (besides Fang’s mother “deadnaming” them on a note), hell everyone just treat as a normal thing.
I thought it took 12 years to make? Guess I saw 4chan & automatically thought that the game started development in 2011. Either that or I just thought of Limbo of the Lost & how that game took 15 years to make, yet the end result is filled with stolen assets & looks like it was made in 3 weeks at most.
@@ExtremeWreck Goodbye Volcano High had been in the works for 2 years when Kate Gray tweeted about it back on June 11th 2020.
Snoot game was developed by 4chan anons not long after the PS5 reveal trailer of Goodbye Volcano High and was released in June of 2021.
The funniest part about Goodbye Volcano High's development hell is they actually scrapped it, twice. Once after Kate Gray's cancellation and subsequent removal from KO_OP and another time after Snoot was released.

I was surprised to see that Goodbye Volcano High was so well-received on steam
Then I actually checked the reviews and found out like 50% of the positive ones are praising Snoot game

The fact that I literally got the happiest ending first try and didn't dare go to the other endings says a lot about the quality of snoot game and yes, this is a troll game.
Only it's not a troll game like the one everyone always imagines, basically what they did is destroy Goodbye Volcano High by creating a better game and it worked.
To be fair, you should get the other endings as you can unlock extra chapters focused on different characters. Probably a big incentive to experience everything Snoot Game has to offer.
It might be hard to do so, but getting them all unlocks the events after the canonical TRUE ending, ending 4.
All I had to see was Canadians, and my interest was peaked in an “Oh god, what did we do this time?” Sort of way.

@@carpetdragon6066 unfortunately, if you want to unlock all the Extra chapters. Ending 1 is Hell, and Ending 2 is sad but acceptable given as anon you were a bit of a dick for this end, but it's worth it for the final extra chapter.. if you feel EMOTIONAL DAMAGE, play through ending 4 or 3.

there are four stages of unlocking, doesn't matter which order you do the endings.
the first three you unlock from completing any ending is: A PTA meeting with Sam(Fang's mom) and the School Staff; Anon Bowling with Ripley(Fang's Dad), Mo, and Nasar; and Anon making a video to show his internet weeb friend his house
The next three unlock sets split these into three: Trish coming to terms with Fang and Anon dating and then being friends with Anon; and Naomi having a break-down at Nasar's "Leaving for college " Party.
and then there is the best chapter unlocked with part 3 of Naomi and Trish's side story stuff. I will say nothing of this one other than to activate Text-To-Speach and have your text speed as slow as possible..
Can you imagine how much this must sting? Imagine working your ass off on a game about gender identity, and then the people you hate the most come along, make a better version of it while also adhering to those themes and sending a much better message, and doing it all just to spite you.

Someone from the snoot game discord here and we saw your video and think its great! Extremely appreciate the non bias towards both games, heck after gvh came out people got digging and learned about what the game could've been and honestly it seems just so much better than what we got plus the old designs as well were amazing too it kinda made us question what ko_op was thinking when they completely ditched this pretty good idea

How the Hell did the Snoot game devs manage to draw better facial expressions than the GVH devs?
Better use of stylization + actually understanding how to draw cute anime characters.
GVH's use of facial animation actually hampers its expressions because they have to factor in a lot more and the style is very clearly coming from the tumblr space rather than Snoot Game's weebery.
The backgrounds in Snoot Game are definitely bad, but in a strange way they made me nostalgic for Tsukihime which used the same corner-cutting method of just using stock photos a lot of the time.

higurashi too. there it was real life photographs through a bunch of filters. it's half terrible and half eerie. and that eerieness just contributes to the whole feel of higurashi.
Yeah this, the bg is poorly looking but so charming i can't help but feel nostalgic for it. Not sure if that was the intention, but it surely help to improve the whole experience, at leas for me. The detailed BGs in GVH just make the whole game look worse by contrast (or lack of, better said), there's a serious lack of cohesion in GVH.

Plus a lot of people outside of Canada likely don't really care about them. It's not like the big states(California, New York, Texas, Florida, etc.) ever really give a crap about the rest of the USA, so why would they care about Canada?

i think the focus shouldn't be the location but the funding. Both Cuphead and Celeste struggled to be funded, and their respective devs worked really hard to get their games finished (insert Cuphead mortgage joke here). GVH was mostly and actively funded by Canada's Government via tax funds, money they should be using to improve their country's life quality instead of this.
The Canada is worse than North Korea comparison IS very hyperbolic tho. But yeah, Canada should focus in improving their citizens' life instead of throwing money to what's pretty much trash.

Snoot Game is easily on my top 10 favourite games of all time. As you said it is a good game to play, but I will add that it is also a good game to watch streamers play (hearing to their opinions on certain topics or their reasoning behind certain choices they made in the game is interesting and fun).
They did that because they were EXTREMELY salty the game did better than theirs… Also because like everyone they assumed to worst, because of where it came from.
Funny thing too, is that the original writer for the game was a Kotaku journalists… So it’s unclear if it was her that asked her old colleges to write the hitpiece, or if it was Ko_oP

GVH makes every sun you don’t do when you tell a story. And I will go in order to describe them:
1) Story: It’s main problem is that it never knows what to focus on… You have a meteor coming to end the world, you have that Fang and company are graduating and most of them don’t know what to do, you have Fang and their bands computing to get famous, you have that the band members are growing apart… It’s literally a mess which no one story gets proper developed besides the band one (also yes everyone understands that the meteor is a metaphor as how many people feel when they end Highschool, but still). It also doesn’t help that the story ends up leading nowhere as all die. Also for a Visual Novel they commit the greatest a literary sin… It’s all Telling and not showing, they tell you just in the most vague, how some things are it also wastes its time with sun story points the lead nowhere and that is called filler, but most of the time it’s one that has to fill the blank spaces, and that is what hurts the story and characters, speaking of which:
2) Characters: Dear Lord, you can’t even call them character, they are just cardboard cut outs that had the bear minimum so that they can be called characters. Most of them don’t go beyond a single quirk (because somehow, quirkiness in modern writers eyes in a good character trait) and a hobby. When you look at characters like Trish, what else is to her than liking bugs and having Rosa as a new friend? What else is to Reed other than his D&D? Yeah they have nothing, and that’s the reason why they can’t have development because there is nothing to develop. The only one who has a real character is Naomi as she is the only character who goes through an arc, which is from being a friend that work so hard to get a good grades to go to University, to being a cyber-stalker/love interest for Fang, and the meteor just f*king thing up for her. Also you could remove characters like Sage (the gay cook, and that the only thing you will know him for) Stella (the tarot card reader, who dresses like an 80’s girl and acts like a whine mom), and Nasser (Fang’s brother, who besides telling bad jokes, has nothing else). Hell you could have erased Nasser and integrated his interactions to Naomi, and believe that game would have improved. Also Fang’s parents NEVER EVER take an importance in the story, they hunt you at something of tension between them and Fang, but proceed to throw it down the drain.
3) Gameplay: You have you rhythm games, which serves to hear the beautiful music, but has little to no impact (hell it’s the only true gameplay you truly have, and it’s optional… Terrible design) and it’s just very basic. Then you have the most infamous part of the game, and it’s the choices, another key detail in every Visual Novel, and they f*cked up real bad… The game starts by saying your choices matter and are important… Then the game itself proceeds to block most of your options, and purposely tells you what are the REAL option you most pick (also you are put on a timer to pick an option, and it will always pick the option the writers basically force you to pick). So yeah the game basically forces you to pick THEIR style of playing the game, really showing you that you never had any real liberty. Even in the D&D sections which is the only existing gameplay, you have no consequence even if you fail or pick the wrong option… Also there is a little game in which you add flavor to you dinner, yes the game puts you to choose some ingredientes and no matter what you pick the game will put the proper spice… There are also small sections in which the game makes you look at Dino-Twitter to check messages and replies random characters put on them, characters you never interact or meet and once again have no purpose to the story (honestly this part of the story really feels like you just check the Twitter’s of the staff self-insets)
So yeah GVH fails at telling you a story, fails at every aspect of gameplay, and worst it fails at trying to make you connect with the characters… The last one is the biggest problem because the entire message/point/moral of GVH story is: No matter what you picked, or how it ends, the important thing is who are your friends and to appreciate the memories you make with them. Basically a “Who are your friends and appreciate life” theme, and that blows because the characters are bland you really never truly interact with them to create a proper bond (besides Naomi, but even with her it feels rushed and creepy). And that the main issues, the game constantly contradicts/fights itself with what it wants to be and what ends up being. Also it doesn’t help that the game was supposed to show just how good the PS5 graphics were, when they launch it
But yeah GVH is objectively terrible, and honestly the only price worth paying it’s is soundtrack, because you will get the same game/story experience if you just what a streamer “play” the game.
As for Snoot Game:
The important of this game is the story and characters, and they succeed big time. From the start they show you a unlikeable immature jerk, who as times go by and the more he interacts with people, the better person he becomes (also there is a big twists, that truly just makes you feel sorry for him, as well as showing just how lonely and desperate he really is). However this game gives you many options to interact with people around you, and depending on them it’s what will determine the outcome of your story… So it’s a game that lets you know that your actions are important because they have real weight and consequences at the end of the story.
Not to mention that unlike GVH which censors itself and tries to show you a “perfect” story, Snoot Game throws you the good and the bad things in life, that not everything is peach colored.
Also everything single character plays a role in the story that serves a purpose, even minor characters really provide some good advices and comedy relief at the same time.
But at the end it all centers around your choices and how they impact the relations you make along the way, truly making you connect with everyone. Specially with Fang, which is truly the main character, which as you get to know them, you will understand and grow to care for them which ends in telling a really realistic and truly romantic love story that will pull your heartstrings.
However the game does have its flaws. It’s humor is not for everyone, and if you are easily offended you will not like it, it also has spicy moments, and the more you progress on the story the fewer the decision making will become. It also at times gets annoying some conflicts get resolved really easy and that the game doesn’t stop hammering you the message if the game which is “Don’t be a jerk and grow up”.
So yeah the score is;
- GVH: Has a 4/10 a terrible game in every aspects that only gets rescued by its music, character designs and colorful backgrounds. It truly was a game that did not know what they wanted to be, and it came out soulless with zero replay able value.
- SG: 8/10 Has a great story and character development, and gives you full liberty with your choices. But the game really hammers down some themes to the point of annoyance. However it will tell you a story that will not only melt your heart but also make you reflect on your own life.

I'd like to congratulate you on being the reason I heard about Snoot Game. Finished it a while ago now, but it still stays with me.
The title literally made me say "hoo boy, what did they do this time?" and just had to know.
Only thing I can say the video was off about was that the "poor indie studio" was actually financially backed by the Canadian government. Which only further adds questions of how it failed. Unless the government was meddling with it more directly.

There is not a single good word for LGBT+ people in a game where they exist and getting charactes from a game trailer heavily charged with an LGBT+ message.
I saw all the route where Anon goes to the army, so I can't talk about other routes, so tell me, is it different in other routes?

Trish manipulated Lucy more than once before and the whole non-binarity bit, plot-wise, was more of a Trish trying to work Fang like a Japanese idol, because she thought non-binary Fang would bring more popularity. Although it, essentially, turns that part of Snoot Game into a commentary on dangers of manipulative bosses and how blurring the lines between role someone plays at work and oneself can be dangerous.

And don't take me wrong, things like what Fang went through happen and it's ok to realize you are not X, but the aftermath doesn't need to have that negative connotation as I saw in the game. Imagine someone saying "-Someone I know had s bad experience with a Jew, therefore I don't like Jewish people."... We don't want to give that message, right? Even if it's true that in that case that bad experience happened, is not a message anyone should give. In any format media.

The character designs of Goodbye Volcano High are so uncanny and I DON'T KNOW WHY. It was such an easy fix - less human heads. Make them longer, less anime, more animal. Some dinos look perfectly okay, the parasaurolophus for and the triceratops-adjacent dino can stay just the way they are. But the main character? The raptor person? Why do their heads have to be so round with long noses? Making their heads more animalistic wouldn't take away from their humanoid shapes, I promise. The MC looks more like a flying dolphin than a pterodactyl because of that. Also, are they actually referred to as a pterodactyl? Because if so, that is a crime. Why does a pterodactyl have FEATHERS? WHY. My dino-nerd heard is aching.
On the flip side, Snoot Game definitely managed to pull those designs off way better than the original.
Also as a trans person, I low-key understand why wouldn't someone want to write transphobia or general societal issues around being transgender. I am losing enough hair over it on daily basis, I really don't feel like mentioning all that crap in my edgy dino game project and lose even more hair when I can be chilling. I don't know if trans people wrote GVH, but judging by how they handled the topic, I don't think so. Trans people would either have created a much deeper representation of inter-familial conflicts of queer people, more realistic social dynamics and so on, or have removed the transphobia factor all together to not deal with more stress. And when you have a situation, where apparently transphobia exists, but it's shoved in the corner out of sight, so that the audience knows it's there, but a bunch of developers don't need to actually put work into writing it, then it's pointless and also a good indicator that the people who were writing the game, or at least most of them, were cis and didn't actually care about portraying the issues as they are. And I don't mean to sound like only trans people can write trans people well. I am 100% certain that any dedicated enough writer can write well about anything, from the issues they've experienced to the ones they've only heard of. It's just that being trans is so abstract to most cis people that a lot of them can't even imagine that, let alone imagine living like this and facing social stigma because of that. When I came out, my dad was convinced I only thought I was trans, because I saw "masculine" characteristics in myself. You know, that I don't like the color pink, or that I'm assertive or a pissy little shit, when that's completely not it. It's also not a realization you come to lightly or quickly. You don't wake up one day and think to yourself "wow, I sure do want to spend thousands of dollars on doctor visits, medicine and surgeries, live in constant distrust, wondering who's a friend and who wants me dead for who I am and also strain the relationship I have with my family, because not everyone is progressive". Basically, that isn't something a cis person can comprehend on their own. And that's okay, but that means trans people will on average be better at writing trans people.
As a Canadian, I am disappointed in my own country because of this game

That game was wooooah... like a damn experience on it's own. If Snoot is anything like NITW was then *maybe* I'll give it a shot.
The fact that GVH isn't even in the "so bad it's good" or "so bad it's infuriating" tier is really what sealed the game's fate. If you're not even enough of anything to provoke ANY emotion out of your audience, then you as a product don't deserve to exist. Just a big old nothing burger that tries to say something without any weight behind it. If Snoot Game didn't get made and developed a whole fanbase around the characters, I'm pretty sure the entire game would've been forgotten in a few years if I'm being particularly generous.
People always underestimate the social bonding power of that site. Coarse as all hell--inside and out--but you'll _never_ find an _authentically_ more diverse place so long as you live. And _everything_ there runs on passion, good or bad.

Snoot Game for me is honestly a solid 8/8.5 out of 10. I do agree with plenty of your criticisms, and there are a few overly edgy moments that didn't need to be in the game, but I really enjoy the characters, story and romance built throughout. Also, Snoot Game Fang is waay more of a fun and interesting character than Goodye Volcano High Fang and I actually really like them.
