What is up with other races of folks always complaining about runs in black folks' music? That's call SOUL and a technique they learn from the black church. Go listen to Taylor Swift if you don't wanna hear it.
for one thing when black folks sing we feel it, we have lived it and we have a understanding of a song that makes us go off on a whole different level that only we and the lord know about. When we sing we go into therapy with a song. It scares the hell out of white people.
Absolutely...and allow me clarify not all white people are perplexed on why black people get so into it when we sing. But when something is spirit fill most white people have a vague understanding of what that entails, but with black people it's very clear. It's something one has to open up themselves to.
Much agreed. This one has way more sauce. I'm a fan of both tho. The 1st version got that grit from her youth this one more refined and she has a lot more skill when she was already a beast 💪🏾
Y'all need to stop with the critiquing. She was only about 17 or 18 here so I don't think it's fair that people are attacking this because in my opinion she did one hell of a job for a 17 year old. She has obviously developed vocally, mentally and physically and is now an amazing singer !
Concentrated Jazmine!❤ My favorite, no watered down version to make her gift palpable to the masses. THIS is ARTISTRY at best most pure. Fuck all that sing it straight, sing it how you feel it. #VocalBeast
0:22--0:33 wig snatched One of my fav things about jazz is her range. Her lower register is pure gold. And you can't miss her runs. Meanwhile new artists are still #watereddownAF
I say this is her greatest performance Vocally!!! I mean the emotion, the depth, and the passion is all deep with her but all oossing out of her at the same time as she's singing!!! She is definitely a dynamic singer if not performer!!!
Sublime, my goodness gracious! Listening to Jazz is an experience! I'm honestly blown away! Her voice is very reminiscent of Kim Burrell. One of the greatest singers of our generation, hands down!
Wow, people are commenting and tearing down this cover as if it was something new. This was recorded back in like 2005/2006. She was only like 17 or so when she did this. For her age, lack of training and life experience, she rocked this. For a developed voice, there is definitely room for improvement, but for where she was at that point, this was excellent.
It doesn't matter if she was 17 here or not. What she did was so amazing if she had done exactly this today would have been just as amazing. I wouldn't change a thing. This is coming from a professional singer. IMO.
This is the first Song I ever heard from here and I KNEW she was destined for a great future in her career. U rarely get REAL talent like this nowadays, her new album will blow up, give props people!
Jazmine is for Jazz & for Jazzy this lady has an entire band in her vocal chords truly a legend!!! It’s the raspy voice & the scatting matter fact the EVERYTHING for me!!!🙌🏾
I LOVE Jazz music & her voice added onto this just puts me into a whole other mood honestly. I love the piano mixed with her singing.....truly impeccable
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!fantastic, imaginative, nuanced, I have heard all the greats ............and she is one of the greatest! thank you so much for sharing.
I remember when I was in college and I think I got this on Limewire. I listened to it every night. Then when I got my first iPod, Apple deleted my local files and I was heartbroken for years.
This is so beautiful. I enjoy listening to her sing. My daughter enjoyed listening to her. I can still hear my daughter singer her music. Man, I miss my baby
For some reason this song just crossed my mind. I guess because its about 5:30pm right now and I just wish it was round midnight so I was asleep. Lol! So depressed right now. But this song is amazing. Jazmine is tremendously talented.
There is a place for this. When you listen to the melismas that Natalie Dessay adds to Romantic or Baroque period arias would qualify as a virtuosic exhibition...so would Ella's "Airmail Special" or "Smooth Sailing". The key to this is not to say which is more valid...but how should I listen to this. Jazmine's ability to insinuate jazz chord progressions with her voice is amazing. Let's respect that...even if we don't care for it.
You're absolutely correct! Our great vocalist exhibited great control of tone AND phrasing! What is lacking in todays vocalist, some, not all, is mastery of phrasing. There are a lot of singers with good voices but the ones we remember are the ones that no how to manipulate a line.
Anyone trying to make a disparaging remark about Jazmine Sullivan is borderline intellectual functioning. Amy Winehouse did not have the vocal vocabulary, raw talent, control, timbre, melismas, runs, nor riffs that Jazmine has. Were Amy still living and you placed them side by side on a stage, she would be standing in awe of Jazmine's ability.
tristonfordummies You’re absolutely correct. 95 % of the population knows absolutely nothing about music...and even less about vocals. People mistake a dark toned voice as a soulful voice. I could see if Jazmines voice was untextured and poppish...but she has rasp and grit...as well precision. It’s like people saying jennifer hudson is better vocalist than beyonce...she is not...Jennifer hits tons of bad notes...I’ve never heard Beyonce hit one ever.
Her rendition of "Midnight" is so sensual in it's delivery that's it's almost orgasmic. I'm not saying it's raunchy or nasty or anything like that. What it is...is raw, emotion filled very adult oriented in it's feel. Anyone who has been through a separation of any kind and has felt the deep down longing for that persons sexual company knows the anguish of needing that fulfillment in the wee hours of midnight. Now you can lie to yourself and say you can deal with it, but we both know...when it comes down on you, there ain't nothing on earth that's going to make you feel good but that someone who used to go there the way you liked. and when she sings "Midnight"....you know she going there. Her anguish is your anguish, her desire for release becomes your desire. I will probably get some negative feed back. But it is what it is.
10 years later and i'm still in love with this
Same here
Same!
And she just redid this with Adam blackstone ❤❤❤
@@mzbaker0181 and I have every run down like I recorded it myself 😂

What is up with other races of folks always complaining about runs in black folks' music? That's call SOUL and a technique they learn from the black church. Go listen to Taylor Swift if you don't wanna hear it.
You better let them know!!!!
It actually come very natural, we are so rich with soul as a people & i love it!
for one thing when black folks sing we feel it, we have lived it and we have a understanding of a song that makes us go off on a whole different level that only we and the lord know about. When we sing we go into therapy with a song. It scares the hell out of white people.
mizpahboy i'm white af and I'm in love with black people singin', it's another level, specially Jazmine's runs
Absolutely...and allow me clarify not all white people are perplexed on why black people get so into it when we sing. But when something is spirit fill most white people have a vague understanding of what that entails, but with black people it's very clear. It's something one has to open up themselves to.
Had to listen to her old version now that she got a 2022 studio version. 😍🔥
Whatttttt?!?! Going to look now … how did I miss that?!
Yea…I liked this version ALOT better
This version is FAR superior
Much agreed. This one has way more sauce. I'm a fan of both tho. The 1st version got that grit from her youth this one more refined and she has a lot more skill when she was already a beast 💪🏾
This one is SO much better than the newer one 😅
Wow, what a singer! A voice like a baritone sax.
The best description of her voice I have read yet
This is proof, that your voice is an instrument. Pure soulful artisry.
This girl is sooo underrated it's a crime.
14 years later and her voice still has this exact richness
Still here in 2020 😩
Me too lol
yup!
Y'all need to stop with the critiquing. She was only about 17 or 18 here so I don't think it's fair that people are attacking this because in my opinion she did one hell of a job for a 17 year old. She has obviously developed vocally, mentally and physically and is now an amazing singer !
I agree with you..This is one of my favs..I've been listening to this 1 for years..I think she did an awesome job..
Most 17yo girls sing like🌬️😂😂😂
I bet they not saying none about her now!!!!
I need her to do a whole jazz album
Nobody touching her voice. Just my opinion.
Say that!!!
Say that!!!
AkielaBee nobody whatsoever! She’s in a class all by herself in my opinion
Absolutely right
She sounds like Kim Burrell singing jazz. Phenomenal.
came back 12 years later almost, still one of my favs from Jazmine Sullivan
same!!
Concentrated Jazmine!❤ My favorite, no watered down version to make her gift palpable to the masses. THIS is ARTISTRY at best most pure. Fuck all that sing it straight, sing it how you feel it. #VocalBeast
J. Rising Singing it straight is for non africans. Africans are gifted, dynamic people. That is why our children try to imitate us.
Amy Winehouse and Jazmine Sullivan are great in their own unique way. Just be blessed that we've had the opportunity to witness their gift.
shardtx
who said anything about amy, & its not originally amy’s song. ella fitzgerald is the original singer
I wanna hear her do a cover of Donny Hathaway's A Song for You.
Me too! 🥰😩
that would be dope, that's my favorite song by him
Man her voice is just IMPECCABLE!!!!!
0:22--0:33 wig snatched
One of my fav things about jazz is her range. Her lower register is pure gold. And you can't miss her runs.
Meanwhile new artists are still #watereddownAF
SOme ppl are not connected so they can't feel. ARtist interpret and paint differently. Jazmine killed this and resurrected it again. I LOVE THIS!
SAY DEM THANGSSS
I say this is her greatest performance Vocally!!! I mean the emotion, the depth, and the passion is all deep with her but all oossing out of her at the same time as she's singing!!! She is definitely a dynamic singer if not performer!!!
Eric Chapman I agree, her ranges are impeccable
Sublime, my goodness gracious! Listening to Jazz is an experience! I'm honestly blown away! Her voice is very reminiscent of Kim Burrell. One of the greatest singers of our generation, hands down!
That's her idol....both of them are ridiculous.....so sick with it!
This song version never get old 2018-forever 😍
They Have The Range brought me back here. Can’t wait for 9/23! Adam Blackstone’s “Legacy!”

Wow, people are commenting and tearing down this cover as if it was something new. This was recorded back in like 2005/2006. She was only like 17 or so when she did this. For her age, lack of training and life experience, she rocked this. For a developed voice, there is definitely room for improvement, but for where she was at that point, this was excellent.
jarrodb1677 how do you mean for a developed voice, there is definitely room for improvement? how would you describe her voice?
It doesn't matter if she was 17 here or not. What she did was so amazing if she had done exactly this today would have been just as amazing. I wouldn't change a thing. This is coming from a professional singer. IMO.
Room for improvement? What is wrong with you people? Where? You guys clearly do not know or understand vocal technique
Yes indeed and that was also the Myspace era and this was my theme song on my page.
Jazmine is a vocal BEAST!
I promise this LEGEND always makes me hang up my vocal chords. Every. Single. Time. 😮
Between her and Kim Burrell I just quit
This is still one of my favorites in 2021!
Takes me back to 2008 when I used listen to this over and over! Cant believe its been 14 years 😪
This vid was uploaded In 2009 🌚
This is the first Song I ever heard from here and I KNEW she was destined for a great future in her career.
U rarely get REAL talent like this nowadays, her new album will blow up, give props people!
Omgosh yes!! I heard this back in 04 I think it was and was like "She better be the radio or I'm done with music!"
Just learned about this song from a co worker and to now know that 17 year old Jazmin sung this is beyond incredible!

You're absolutely correct! Our great vocalist exhibited great control of tone AND phrasing! What is lacking in todays vocalist, some, not all, is mastery of phrasing. There are a lot of singers with good voices but the ones we remember are the ones that no how to manipulate a line.

tristonfordummies Amy was a white girl with white privelege.
