I have to say that is your fault. I will walk out if they don't understand that they are my contracted employee and you should not allow a person, that you hired, to get away with that. This is why I don't do Black hair salons and just get a haircut at Supercuts or some place like that. It is because of the common and accepted attitude that many Black hairdressers have. They don't realize that they are not the boss and that they are the employee. Put them in thier place and remind them who is in charge if your have to and leave.

Hair stylist don’t actually wanna do hair anymore. They just wanna lay wigs and make a quick $200-$350 dollars without washing, massaging, blowing out ect.

IG stylists are only one sector of stylists. Neighborhood salons still exist and they act NOTHING like these IG “stylists” . Their real licensed cosmetologists with customer service etiquette and sanitation knowledge
I need you to say this louder for ppl in the back. I do agree with this message, however, when folks critique things its usually the most extreme examples and say that's the norm, when its not. Don't get me wrong, these prices are outrageous and when I see a braided style for over $300, I just exit stage left and keep looking. However, there are plenty of places that I can go to get braids for $200-$250 and sometimes get a wash in as an add-on (but I prefer to wash and condition my hair myself tbh). $1,000 braids are not the norm (yet) and the folks who pay for it are FOOLS! IG has gassed folks up 'Charge your worth plus tax!' ma'am please lol As far as professionalism, I do agree black stylists on a whole are late, it is what it is LOL but that's why it's important for them to be honest and access how long it REALLY takes for them to complete a service. In an ideal world, you might want to complete large knotless braids in 4hrs but be honest sis, that might take you 6hrs...then the person afterwards might have to wait. As far as not being licensed, I don't play those games and I believe it's the customers responsibility to vet whoever is doing their hair. You can't just plop in anyone's chair with no questions asked. Before I allow ANYONE in my hair, I ALWAYS ask them about how their cosmetology training went and their philosophy on hair health (not just styling and weaving). Don't get me wrong, I have seen stylists whose work that I wasn't blown over by but none of them completely butchered my hair and left me in tears traumatized. Those same stylists have a loyal client base that love them so different strokes different folks? I have a regular stylist who is AMAZING and got my hair on the right path! Finally, I kinda disagree about the whole flying to foreign countries to get braids. Whet? Cost is not just a flight and a hotel! I love my African sisters but they braid too damn tight and you will leave with no edges! From what I have seen, there is little emphasis on the science of healthy growing hair. Now this is just me, but I am NOT flying across the world to get some braids that will only last for 4-5 weeks.
i really think a lot of these ig stylists never went to school and never worked in a salon. theyve just been doing their own hair at home and think they can be a business. like i do my own laundry, doesnt mean i know how to run a dry cleaning business.
Exactly. I go to a neighborhood hair salon only. Online or phone booking, no advance deposit needed, excellent professionalism and hair CARE. My stylist knows what she’s doing and is booked weeks out. I go to the African shop for braids. These IG stylists are out of their minds.
I one in the comments beat all around the bush when I asked her directly is she a licensed cosmetologist but it took her 2 damn paragraphs or more to admit it. No it’s true, they want to be influencers. I bought a wig from JC strands bc I saw another wig stylist tag the hair and it looked good. Tell me why she didn’t send the hair for months and I bought it for my birthday. I look up the girl who runs the company, she got pics of her on a boat with Birkins no joke !!😅 I had to buy a second wig for my birthday which was so stressful and annoying, and I called the BBB and found where she files her company and filed with the attorney general in her state. I disputed with my bank and got my money back. She suddenly realized where my order was once I got the authorities involved and I got that wig for free. It took a lot of effort and monthssss of effort but this girl not gonna live like jayda and meanwhile she ruining my birthday. Anyways, moral of the story is don’t let these girls play in your face!!

A lot of people are saying “that why black women need to learn to do their own hair” I’ve been doing my own hair for nearly 10 years but I have scoliosis. I simply can’t do my hair myself more than once every two weeks. I used to do my own box braids but I can’t anymore because it takes me three days and the back pain is unbearable. We should be able to go pay for a REASONABLY priced service like anyone else because it becomes an accessibility issue. And since we are the MOST judged when our hair is not perfect it’s just not fair.
Sometimes you can't learn to do something because you need the style NOW . And getting a good cleanse, a good deep conditioning routine done by someone that deeply knows hair. Or a better blowout. It's a SERVICE
I stopped going to black hair stylists because every time I went to the salon I was mistreated. The customer service was terrible. I will never forget when I got kicked out of a salon with DRIPPING WET HAIR. The stylist came an hour late and she told me she FORGOT to schedule me. When she started washing my hair, I can tell she didn’t know what she was doing. She then complained about my hair being tangled while YANKING my hair with a SMALL TOOTH COMB. She told me to GET OUT and blamed me for “ not combing my hair before I came “. After that I stopped going to stylists and I learned how to do my own hair. I had a lot of bad experiences with stylists but that was the WORST experience I had.
Omg!! That is terrible and I so believe u. I'm looking for a new stylist now because every time I get to the salon, and ask her where she is because she's not there, she asks me to come pick her up. Like wtf? And I'm a new client. Her flatirons smell too so I noticed a burned hair smell. I'm over it!
This is why I learned how to braid myself. I know the tension I want, the style I want, I take as long as I want until I finish, I can try out different styles without spending money. One of the best skills I learned in 2015, 0 regrets
Yup! As a stay home mom of 2 under 2 being able to take as long as I want is the best. I’ll take a week if I want if I’m not going anywhere….and I have with some 24” soft locs lol… that just happened to be my most complimented look ever. Thinking about doing it again

And I’m known for 3month long styles… need it to last as long as possible bc leaving my hair alone is what keeps it growing. After 2 years of back to back post partum shedding… I just do whatever I can to leave it alone so it comes back full and healthy.

I was just about to say I’m telling. Fuck that. I had to register my business and pay the registration and hire a business attorney. And then these bitches get mad at “white folks” because they’re following rules and regulations.
I had a bad IG hair experience. Went to this girl’s home. She had a dog and did not inform me. She had dishes and stuff on her floor. Less than an hour before the appointment she tells me to get hair gel on top of the hair I already bought. I get to the place and she starts braiding for about an hour until she just stops and says “I’m gonna take these out, sorry I’m not used to using this hair.” And she takes my few braids out and then sends me home. This was two days before I was headed to New York to see my family for Thanksgiving. I wanted to have nice hair to see my family. 😵💫 I went home, put on a RUclips tutorial and did my own box braids myself WITH the hair this stylist didn’t know how to use. I went to the store with my new style and was getting tons of compliments on the hair I washed, trimmed and styled myself. Been doing my own hair ever since, can’t nothing stop me now ❤ I you wanna braid your own hair I definitely recommend buying a hair braiding mirror on Amazon. It’s a lil tri-fold mirror that can attach to your door etc. it lets you see the back of your head and get your parts right. Do this stuff yourself if you can y’all 😮💨
As a black woman I’ve never felt discriminated against for my hair outside of the black community. I’ve worn my natural hair on interviews and still got the job. Worn it crazily (well kept crazy lol) in public and it was fine. People outside of the black community look at my hair in fascination it’s those inside the community that ever had something negative to say. My experience. I will admit that these women may speak more freely with us about their opinion considering the common background.
I have a different experience. People outside of the Black community have said hurtful things about my hair for as long as I can remember. I've lived in three states (Midwest, South and Northeast) and five cities since I've gone natural and the comments don't seem to stop or change. When I was 17 and wearing a twist out a WM told me I looked like I'd been electrocuted. Several WM told me my natural 4c hair made me look like a little boy. Usually when WW look at me, I see them look at my hair first. At a previous job, my boss (a WW) would comment on my hair whenever I changed it. "okay so what's this style about?" Or "I actually like this style, I don't know what that last one was." Just an alternate perspective.
Best advice I can give is call state board. If they aren’t licensed they will be fined and mandated to go to school. If they are licensed and a “wash at home” call state board. Violation. Working from home, check their license, there are requirements for that. Never cash app or Zelle pay with credit card only. So when they get stupid with the deposit and rules you can submit a claim. Teach a valuable lesson on accountability, you cannot do whatever you want without repercussions.

I saw the prices that so many women are paying for just a ‘wig lay’ with no care for their hair underneath. It’s distressing and it happens in communities where proper services are scarce.
Truly, I went to an HBCU and have seen some girls charging for the price of braids just to glue down a wig and them braiding down the hair wasn’t even included…

As a white girl with the most stereotypical white hair, I spent as much time sussing out hairstylists when I moved too far from the only one I trusted, as I spent searching for a chiroprachter who literally messes with spines. I know we don't have much in common when it comes to hair, but just as a woman, hair is so damn important to us, and I am so sorry that there are people taking advantage of your unique situation. Hopefully this craze dies down very quickly, because Im pretty sure no service is better than whatever this is...
Yup, it's bc alot of IG stylists steal photos from other stylists and tag them as their own; you have to do a lot of research to make sure that the photos being posted is the stylist's actual work.
I started disputing charges with my bank and writing long winded google reviews totally and completely trashing them. I didn’t win every dispute, but it’s the principal for me.
Hey hairstylist here. I love the content! Playing devils advocate I find that a lot of the consumers honestly book someone because of how much followers they have rather than the quality of their work. I would offer services like washing hair, detangling, conditioning at a decent price and A lot of people would not book it. And go to someone who’s more popular. My point is there is decent hairstylist out here they just may not be as popular as others.
Consumers go based on what “looks pretty”. These trash stylists are getting tons of followers because they know how to present their pictures online. They usually have high definition cameras (newer iPhone cameras are excellent these days), good lighting, the pretty backgrounds (that leaf wall with the neon lights lol), and they only post the clients who are “conventionally attractive”. I would suggest that you invest in the higher quality photos, the nice backgrounds, and DON’T use filters. A great presentation plus great quality service will blow your sales through the roof. Put thought into your captions and hashtags and post consistently. Always have the city you work in in your bio and tagged as the location of your post. Don’t hashtag cities in states no where near you. As a last result buy followers, people are more likely to trust a page with a high follower count. Just stay realistic (5k - 10k), your likes shouldn’t be severely disproportionate from your followers. Sincerely, A former celebrity social media manager ❤
Hey another stylist here, I completely agree and as someone who does provide wash, treatments, trims etc with all of my services I find it super discouraging when the “popular ig stylist” becomes the standard for all stylists.
Great point, but I also think it’s intimidating for new clients when they feel like they have to book 4 svcs for one hairstyle. I just want it included in the price. I don’t want to book shampoo, dry, condition, trim, style and curl lol make it a package or something. I think that’s just as big a problem. I stick w simpler stylists bc the anxiety of booking and all the extra charges and hassles is a lot 😩 I purposefully look for “less popular” stylists bc the quality is often just as good if not better. More ppl should think this way but they wanna follow what’s popular.

I drove 1hr to get my lashes done… she text me 6 minutes before the appointment to let me know she didn’t have any of the lengths I had booked for… I told her it would of been nice if she let me know beforehand but all she could say was she didn’t have time to. My appointment was booked 2weeks in advance.
That's a damn shame. The lack of professionalism. She technically has NO excuse, like she didn't do inventory in all those 2 weeks prior to your appointment?? I hope you didn't have to pay her a deposit....
People don't like to have receptionists now because it saves money but they really need someone to handle some of these small but important customer interactions that they probably genuinely do not have time for.
I went to an Instagram famous hairstylist for a lace wig. I purchase the wig on my own for $450 from a direct supplier. She charged one $150 to install it. Curls and styling were a separate fee. She also charged $20 for a down payment In addition to an expected tip. I went in and nobody greeted me, people were ratchet AF. I sat there while they keke'd and braided my hair for the wig install. Once done, I had to place myself under the dryer and turn on the machine while the stylist yelled instructions from the front of the shop. I sent her questions a month later and no response. No customer service. If I was treated better I would have payed the fee no problem but the fact that they were rude, I had to place myself under the dryer and no customer service was the straw for me. I said first and last time and have been practicing how to lay a lace because who has the time?
im so sorry you had to go through that. tbh i always left my hair appointments with stylists like that feeling like they weren't doing anything i couldn't just learn to do on my own; esp with wigs. there's just so much free education out there. i refuse to pay for a wig install ever again
Another note on the pricing I don't think these stylist are taking into account their "target audience".. unless you are looking for celebs the regular girl with a 9-5 cannot afford 1k braids.. even 350-700 is a big stretch and would require most folks to literally have to save their money In order to get their hair done..imo most can't even afford it so it's really crazy to me the way they are charging... mind you I am a licensed nail tech & understand why stylist charge what they charge but sometimes it be so overboard and ridiculous 😒

I am an unlicensed hair braider. My clients know my status. I’ve been told I take care of the hair better & have more professionalism than the licensed stylists. I’ve never charged more than $150. For any type of braids. And I live in NYC.
Same in the UK. I live in the US now but when I go visit my family I make sure I visit , my sister’s braider. She is excellent!!!!! From Senegal. I pay £70 for braids and it includes hair. £ 70 is around $83.90.
I 100% agree with everything you said. I had THEE worst experience ever in 2021 when I got butterfly locs. The stylist told me one price then I got there and she started adding on for everything. “Your hair is too long/thick so it’ll be an extra $200” then she told me I didn’t bring enough hair so I went out and bought more hair which wasn’t cheap THEN halfway through my hair she says I ran out of hair(After I got the amount of hair she just told me to go get!) that’ll be an extra $50 for me to use my hair. My total by the time she finished was WAY more than she originally said. Not even to mention she did them so tight! For TWO WEEKS I could not sleep because of how tight my hair was. Plus I had sores all in my scalp from the tightness. I cried so hard after that and I had a hard time trusting stylists after that. THANK God I found a great braider who’s been my go to since the beginning of 2022 she gets me right every time. It’s just so hard nowadays to find people who actually care about their customers and not just the money.

Most black hair stylist shouldn't be a hair stylist because they lack patience, knowledge, social skills, moral/integrity, and passion for the job. Like why even become a hairstylist then? If you hate your job then just say that and find something else. Too many people expect to be entrepreneurs and think they'll be rich without putting in REAL WORK.
I work with wyte hairstylist and they do the same thing. I think a lot of people lack passion and are lazy and the woman I work with are not even on Ig
People forget that the money comes at the cost of being in customer service. I see it all the time waitressing. Like yeah, the money can be really good, but you have to be around people all day, even when you're not really in the mood. It's not for everyone but some people just can't see past the dollar signs and then complain that they hate it.
The fact that we as a collective have allowed these stylists to inflate the prices so high without any possessional schooling or license is honestly a huge fail on our part as consumers. I don't really go to the shop but if I did I wouldn't anymore. These stylists don't even take care of your hair or wash it. They expect you to come pre-washed, blow dried and sometimes even straightened out. Its the audacity. I would boycott them if I were frequently going. If I'm paying hundreds of dollars for hair then it should be washed, maintained, the experience should be classy/ professional and the stylist should be punctual.
I think if the licensing board got rid of the relaxer requirement and replaced it with doing a wig install or braiding service for the test this would do a good bit to solve the problem Like get with the times people Nobody wants that but that’s what is required to get a hair license everywhere
You're so right. When the prices started to get too outrageous there should have been a collective push back. I feel like part of it was consumers feeling guilty and wanting to support their black stylist even when they were lacking in professionalism or started increasing prices. Plus the pandemic made it harder to even find stylists for a time so many blk women were compromising their standards even further in order to get their hair done
My little cousin had to learn the hard way. So far 2 Detroit hairstylists took her deposit and canceled on her AND she still keep going to them. Just because they have followers and present good work don’t mean they will have good service behind it. All I can do is smh 🙃
There’s no good reason to put up with that in Detroit. If you throw a rock 3 feet, you’ll hit 5 people who do hair, there are plenty of good stylists in the city but if it’s a popularity contest, you get what you get 🤷🏿♀️
These hairstylists are the reason i shaved my head a few years ago. I was sick of not being able to find anyone to do my hair for a decent price, and i didn’t know how to do it myself. So i shaved it & started over fresh. Now I’m a natural girl. But it was definitely NOT by choice, but by force b/c of these weird ass hairstylists.

Yeah but barbers are also unprofessional and unreliable. Trust me, I had a shaved head for over 20 years and half the time the barber is -late, -not there- or just plain trifling.
Ranting: I remember I had an appointment to get my hair braided, and the stylist told me she had to reschedule me because she was sick. I said okay I understand, can I receive my deposit back because I needed my hair done that day. This girl tells me no you have to reschedule, I don't give back deposits. Keep in mind her website say's if "she" cancels the appointment within the certain time- frame I'll receive my deposit back. She then blocked me lmao. Not only that every time I went to get my hair done by anybody, they never truly cared for my natural hair, only the style .. Like girl If you want me to come back to you I still need hair on my head!!!!!!
I had a similar experience where I texted a stylist and ask was she going to be at the shop for a specific day and she said yeah. I paid the deposit and showed up on that day and the shop was closed. I kept trying to reach out to her and she blocked me.
I cannot stand these lash techs omg. One tech gave me an eye infection (she was unsanitary, I did not know until it was too late). She did not refund me. Smh.
I know a lot of this doesn’t apply to me and I can’t imagine how much more traumatizing and plain frustrating it has to be for black women dealing with this. The whole outrageous prices for hair stylist’s Instagram also happened when I would go for highlights and a cut. My hair lifts so easily but a few years ago they started telling me I have to go to them multiple times to get the lightness I wanted. Um what? Since when? The second to last time I went to a stylist I paid $700 for full highlight and cut. The woman charged by the hour and took her sweet time with all baby lights, taking almost four hours to foil my hair, then all this artistic melting of a million different toners AND spent so long having me pose for damn pictures…. And it was no better than any other time I got my hair done. The last time I found someone who charged less, ONLY $500 for partial highlight and cut. 😑 the woman was so mean to her assistant I could tell the poor girl had to go to the back to cry. The stylist was working on me and two others at the same time, just hustling. After she finished and showed me the back of my hair and I went to touch it and she snapped and ordered me not to touch it with her eyes all big and crazy. She then took me to the Ferrari showroom next door to take photos of my hair. She kept telling me how to pose and asked what was wrong with my face when it wasn’t coming out right and I’m like wtf woman I’m not your damn hair model. Worst of all, when I went home, I saw she left tiger stripes. There is definitely an issue with the culture of hair stylists having bad attitudes, over charging and not caring that this is YOUR hair that YOU will be wearing, not their walking advertisement. Its like these people see you as their personal content for their social media and not a human being wanting to look and feel good about themselves. I ended up learning how to do it all myself.
And for a lot of us older people, older meaning at least those in our 30s and up, we know what’s right and what’s normal. This is not how we grew up. We grew up having to go to the girl at the front desk so she can schedule us in on the computer or on the Hairdresser’s physical planner. Our trims would be scheduled, our perms would be scheduled. She would let you know weeks in advance that she wasn’t going to be available, the price was discussed and understood. There were no deposits or exorbitant fees because there was communal trust. I don’t know how we let such a wonderful thing fall apart over the years.
I miss those days! I agree this type of trust and respect is gone! The problem is like its stated they all want to flex for the gram! They act like them doing your hair is a privilege. It truly is very disgusting!
I think it's a mix of things. Even in a lot of salons now it's hard to get shit scheduled because no one wants to pay a receptionist so it falls on the customer to book online or chase down a stylist. This is because of the way technology has changed it's cheaper do it this way and not enough of a problem so far but having a receptionist is just better customer service. I hope businesses start bringing them back. The other thing is a lot of people are exploiting the shifting attitude towards service workers. There's been push to treat service workers with respect and elevate them because customer service of any type is genuinely hard. I remember a few years ago seeing Millennials humble bragging about how they don't complain when they get bad service. That's great when people are acting in good faith but bad actors exploit these attitudes. Service workers don't need to be treated like shit but a closed mouth doesn't get fed. Report these people to the better business burea, take them to small claims court, call your state licensing agency, etc...there are remedies for shitty service. And learn to take care of your own hair. My hair relaxed and to my bra strap. I go twice a year for trims because I don't want to cut my own hair but otherwise I can relax, deep condition and style my own hair for most occasions and it is healthy. It's not hard. If I have a special occasion come up I'll go but otherwise I do my hair at home and I'm not depedent on these people.
Thisss. I miss going to the salon, appt made and STARTS ON TIME. Picked a style out of the magazine/brought a printout lol and actually walked out with that style, didn’t have to pay more for a trim if I needed it. And my natural hair was maintained and looked great afterward!
I stopped getting my hair done when a lady burned my hair to my scalp. To this day my hair is fragile in the back. Bad customer service in the black community is causing many to braid their own hair. For the prices people are charging it needs to be an experience. If your charging $1000 and up you need to provide meals and a comfortable inviorment. you should be on time, professional and kind.
Yk what’s crazy, I JUST watched Issi’s video on her wedding hairstylist story and was shocked. I come from a home with two cosmetologists and am sad of what this field has turned into 🤦🏽♀️
I feel this way about the nail industry as well. There are great, professional, independent Techs out here, but people can’t wait to spend their money elsewhere and be treated less than. I’m befuddled.
I have been a hairstylist for 7 years and I do agree with a lot of the points that was made. I think people also need to know the person behind the brand, research who the stylist is. If you don't like deposits, being in someones home, or their rules don't book. There are stylist out here that go beyond for their clients; showing up drained, providing comfortable spaces, professionalism etc. Getting your hair done is a form of self care and an energy exchange, when your appointment is over you should feel good! we're human so everything will not be perfect 100% of the time but when you find the stylist you respect STICK with them. The stylist that are showing up, giving quality work and giving good professional energy should be appreciated and acknowledged.
Thats why I said it's never going to change bc people like rude and popular people bc they get to be closely associated to popularity. It's sad. I had to retire from braiding a while ago because when I was washing, conditioning, blow drying and braiding for $250, they started going to the braiders that charge $50 for just braiding hair dirty and all. I was like no ma'am.

after YEARS! I finally found a stylist that is KIND and respectful and does great work and also charges reasonable prices AND has an actual hair salon and is not doing my hair in her kitchen with her toddlers running around. I thank God! I hope she never moves away or something like that I would be devastated. Its been a struggle fr!
I'm starting to feel this way about "estheticians/ wax/lash" people as well. The amount of harmful content I see where they are just blatantly doing extra stuff or charging crazy money just to glue ali express lashes on with hair glue is BEYOND crazy. Whle I'm only really a customer of the wax people, I've been looking into lash and skins services, but I'm immediately turned off by the booking rules and blatant crazy stuff they post.
Yep girls are ‘doing lashes’ now too. But lashes are a luxury service. Before the boom most licensed estheticians at spas charged like 250-300 to install mink lashes. Now these girls are charging much less but they have a certificate and are using poor quality products
I had my one tried and true esthetician and I moved states away from her and honestly I’m considering moving back just to have her back. I was with her through price increases and all because she was always good to me. Customer service was A1

I’m so glad you did this video . Girl I was over it when this IG stylist told me I had to pay “Hair insurance “ for hair not provided from her directly and a fee for me to park my car in a free parking lot like a damn valet . I left . All these unnecessary fees. It’s getting out of hands now.
I'm glad that a dialogue is being started. As a stylist myself I just wanna see us do better because to hear people say there are more bad stylists than good is saddening. I can only speak for me but I appreciate/respect each client I have because they didn't have to come to me but they did and I hope you guys are able to have that with a stylists one day too 💗
I'm at the point where I just want to grow my natural hair out just so I can wear my hair...... I'm tired of paying $250 plus for EVERYTHING. This woman charged $100 - $150 for a silk press & charges $30 for a trim. What is the $100-$150 for??? Why isn't a trim, wash, & styling included?!?! I want to be done. I really do.

If you’re a professional who is committed to the maintenance of your clients’ natural hair, an end trim should be included in the silk press service if it’s necessary. But if it’s a full haircut then that’s an additional fee.
I learned how to manage my own hair (no relaxer 4c) once I saw the prices. I noticed a big increase of “stylist” claiming to specialize in natural hair. They increased the prices for naturals but the service and outcome was not good. I then realized I knew more about natural hair then the new age “stylist”. I consulted one women who didn’t have natural hair herself nor did she seem to have experience with it🚩 🚩
I remember when a hairstylist tried to cancel my hair appointment because I was the only appointment of the day. Like huh. Ma’am my schedule allows for this day not tomorrow. Better believe I was in that chair that day.
I’ll go to the 90’s style brick and mortar beauty shop before I even attempt to think about booking these scamstylers. This is why black women and girls need to learn how to do their own hair. You need to take the time to care for your hair and know what you need and don’t need.
Oooh Chile. I did the right thing going to cosmetology school. I had a feeling this would be worth it, but im glad to have it reinforced. We literally learn chapters upon chapters about professionalism, bacteria and safety etc. And a lot of it is common sense. I highly recommend anybody going into this industry to go to cos school, I don't regret it ❤️
Yes I agree sis! I’m half African and I will always go to my African aunties for braids because they never charge such outrageous prices or demand deposits. For bum length braids I pay no more than $150!!!!!
I have no concept of what braids cost but to buy human hair in my texture is so expensive! What does the braiding hair run for and how long does it take to do the braids? $150 seems very reasonable considering you have to buy hair and the labor involved!
Ima tell it like this... it's so important for us black girls/ textured hair girls to LEARN how to care for your own hair! Find your holy grail products: leave in, shampoo/deep conditions & oil.. learn how to style your natural hair and PRACTICE! also learning to do protective styles when you need a break...I do both and really feel like I've mastered how to do my own hair...I just did knotless boho braids and I AM in L O V E 😂🥰 ...I'm gone save this money and nurture my hair! Having a great stylist is great but you really need to know how to do your own in case you can't afford getting your hair done or your stylist isn't available or if you like me you just can't find a good one!! 😉 good luck girliess 💜
I definitely agree if you’re able to. The hardest part is seeing what works for you in terms of products. I know from my experience it took me a long time to find the right products that work for my curly hair, plus I was doing it by myself when I had nowhere to turn to and that was over a decade ago when going natural/curly wasn’t as big as it is now.
I hate it because I’m a braider and I used to promote myself instagram but not anymore bc of the bad name. I only charge $150-$175 for small knotless. I used deposit to buy the hair and then I wash and detangle. I also learn to braid the hair being slightly stretched rather than blown out.
Dang I'm a licensed cosmetologist. I stopped doing hair after my divorce because depression and losing interest in everything but I need to get back at it. I would do a whole head of single braids for $175 or less depending on who. I was also very professional.
How long did it take you? Can you do two heads in a day? Do you think after you divorced that you can survive on $175 a day before 30% self employed tax and overhead cost/booth rent?
It’s always wild to me because here in my country (Equatorial Guinea) washing your hair is a max of 2$, the most I’ve payed for my hair was 60$, that includes wash, blow out, and the braids, plus it was 60 because I got the hair from the salon, if I bought it myself it would’ve been around 50. Sometimes they will even include doing your eyebrows or a mask (1$)
I wanted to get extensions and straighten my hair for my wedding and this lady rudely told me that she can’t do my hair if my extensions are “fake” or from China/Amazon! She had the nerve to tell me this a day before my wedding 😲! Luckily my sister in law connected me with her stylist who is really nice, sweet, and professional.
My grandmother is a licensed beautician and cosmetologist and when I showed her the part in your video where the girl was charging $1k for Knotless and your hair has to be blow dried and washed, she turned to me and said “Hell if she making $1k off of doing something simple as that, I might as well do it for free” 😭 my grandma don’t do people hair no more, but it was a funny comment she made
the problem is that ppl are going to instagram stylists period. a real hairstylist/braider isn’t going to require a deposit, nor a terms and conditions statement just to sit in their chair. the quality and quantity just doesn’t match 🤷🏾♀️. if y’all don’t start sending these folks names to the state 😂
I have a friend with 4c hair and she is given up on going somewhere to get her hair done . She has taken the time to learn and is doing it herself . It’s ashame that it’s come to that ..I wish that these stylists would come down to earth and realize people cannot just shell out 1,000 plus for hair when they have kids and rent etc….

A stylist said she'll charge me $475 with a $150 deposit just to dye my hair red (no highlights or anything else) These new stylists are definitely taking advantage of people's money and then turn around to try and normalize it....
as someone with anxiety, stuff like this makes me want to avoid salons even more 😔 i always worry about embarrassing myself or coming off as stupid so i’d rather just stay home or struggle doing my own hair and painting my own nails
I have anxiety and I learned how to do my hair specifically for this reason. Personally, I just do not like someone else being in control of my hair if that makes sense. I learned how to do it naturally curly and silk pressing and in the process also learned what is good for my hair and what I should do to continue to maintain my hair health. Thankfully I never had a bad experience at a hair salon but my anxiety did push me to be more self reliant and taught me more about myself. It was especially helpful during the lockdown when everything was closed. I want to learn how to do box braids at some point. I say if it’s possible and if you have the time and resources definitely learn how to do your own hair. I will say take a day or two off when doing it and also to have a LOT of patience.
I love that you spoke on the customer service. I noticed that a few years ago myself after I finally decided to go back to outsource my hair, nails, and lashes. And I wanted to support my peers so I started trying out these social media stylists. As someone who’s mainly been in customer service roles I know how a customer should be treated and I noticed these people are treating their customers as if they are friends and family. They talk to people all types of ways, just go MIA cause they felt like it, want you to understand every issue they have but don’t care about your issues, and then they attempt to blame the customer for anything that goes wrong with the service. Let’s just say outside of my nails I went back to doing everything myself.
I am a licensed cosmetologist who believes in the foundation of someone’s hair which is the scalp to be healthy. By not washing or treating someone’s scalp they are doing their potential clients a disservice. Lots of “stylist” who focus more on the profit and not the craft are usually the ones that aren’t licensed, they are unprofessional and overpriced because they know it’s a necessity by many. If there are people that are paying those prices and having those experiences you get what you settle for. If you see they have some red flag check it out do your research because I’m sure your aren’t the only one who’s invested your money and got a slap in the face service. But I promise you that like myself and my fellow cosmetologist who can educate and slay some styles we are out there but don’t settle if you aren’t 100% sure!
The funny thing is the actual stylist that do wash and blow dry your hair because they are required to, don’t even charge those ridiculous prices. I am natural and get my natural hair braided every 6 weeks. My stylist never overbooks, always give me a steam treatment because I am a loyal customer and when she did increase prices it went from paying $100 to $125 for full service. It is always an experience when I get my hair done and I really just go there to relax. That is how it should be.
All of the stress from trying to find a decent stylist to help me with my hair caused me to cut it off. Every time I went to a stylist they act like they didn’t want to do it but then charge me a large amounts, terrible customer service and lack luster results and major damage to my hair. I went to a barber shop and I’ve had a pixie cut for 2 years. I feel happy, I feel free by not being bound by the frustration of not having my hair done because I can’t trust anyone who is professional.
My first time getting Large Knotless braids to my waist was $280 with no downpayment as I saw this lady once before. She provided the extensions, she washed, deep conditioned, trimmed, combed my hair again and it was 5 hours going into 6. She was also very professional and helpful in my healthy hair journey. This would be back 2021 November. Its hard to find honest people like that who arent just there to catch the bag, but actually care for the health of your hair.
You know why they keep doing this because no one is questioning them its not even 1,000 its 1,100,00 and people are actually purchasing it. Do people not question. I am sorry call me broke but paying over a £100 for braids is not it when they do not wash, blow dry ur hair and u have to make sure ur hair comes in sections or its not nappy. They keep doing this because we are allowing them to do it and when they do get questioned they say we do not respect their work no their price is ridiculous and some of their hairstyles don't even last a month if i am paying over 1k for a style i expect that to last for the whole yr lol
im also in the uk but up north and i pay £150 for braids smh, im wearing wigs right now with the lace sometimes showing and yt girls still be thinking its natural haha
These prices are a joke. In germany we pay 100€ for knotless, buttlength, small braids. Yeah, the customer service isnt the best, but we have many options.
Whenever I see stylists with ridiculous rules I know they don’t care for their clients and block their pages. The “rules” are written with such disdain you just know they have no regard for the client experience and are going to be ripping through your hair. “If your hair has blunt ends your appt is canceled” GOODBYE MA’AM. If you don’t know how to work with different hair types and styles, get the requisite training first before ruining your client’s day and wasting their time. Stylists like this have seem to have forgotten they are performing a service, not doing a favor.
The same thing is happening with nails. People need to be accountable too. Folks like to brag about the hundreds of dollars they spend on their nails and hair. It's the flexing too that allows the price gouging.
I always experimented with my hair even before I went natural b/c my pockets didn't always match my need to have my hair done regularly. I don't think it's wrong for someone to pay for their time and supplies, but the price has to match the service. Most Regular 9-5 aren't even paying that much for 40hrs a week. So if I'm paying 1k for BRAIDS, I better get hair included, a wash & blow dry, a trim, educated on the products you're using and how to care for my hair during the braids and afterwards, a comfortable chair, 2 mimosas, a snack and great customer service. Cuz when I used to go to the salon in the early 2000s, I at least got 1/2 of that for waaaayy less. Like that video said, you got 100 rules, no booth rental, and I'm in your house. My anxiety of going to a stylist and being upset with the poor service, quality, or treatment of my natural hair is why I just stopped going. I'm not confrontational so I rather avoid putting myself in a situation where I might have to say something that I know will only go south due to these new stylists not having good customer service and caring about my experience. RUclips has taught me how to get a good style at my own budget.
I also remember hearing that it’s important for hairstylists to be able to identify skin/scalp issues as they are often the only ones who will find the issue and let your client know. I would also think that its important to have that knowledge for braid and weave installations, I remember on ANTM they refused to give a girl a weave one year cause she has psoriasis and they were worried about making it worse
Yiep it’s as expensive also in Canada. When I first came here from Africa for my uni, I was shocked! So I learned to crochet myself and decided to just lock my hair afterwards. I’ve started my micro-lock myself and they are thriving since!!!

Y’all when my hair started thinning from stress and depression I stopped going to these IG stylists. I actually had to sit down, do hella research and even pray to find a good licensed stylist who could help me keep and regrown my hair. My hair has been my crown for years and seeing it fall apart and seriously neglected in the hands of these IG stylists broke me. I’d get my hair done only to come back in tears and I couldn’t have it anymore. I finally found a stylist and I feel like a little girl again, excited to get her hair done! I also spend more on my hair then ever and that I do gladly! Stylists with a passion don’t get afraid to charge your worth we’re not afraid of pricing, we’re afraid of the neglect. Most of the licensed professionals I’ve found are actually very afraid of Charging these IG prices, they also tend to stick to their regulars and are not as active online, making them extremely hard to find. I found mine by stopping a girl with beautiful healthy hair to ask who her stylist is. She only took me on referral cause exactly she deals with regulars and has regular follow-ups/ treatment plans with each one. I’m slowly recovering from my depression but I can’t tell y’all how encouraging seeing my hair grow back with each appointment has been. My stylist has spoken life into me through her magical hands - I’m so grateful for her. I feel like a queen in her chair and it’s become a huge part of my self care routine. I can’t wait to be back to my original length and I know I’ll cry when it happens.
Being a black man with locs, I haven’t had as severe of moments but I can relate to this stuff getting crazy. My loctician was licensed but was always late even when I would book a week in advance and as her first client, would overbook and stop my appointment just to start others, and raise prices while lying about them being like that all the time. Eventually I just stopped going to her an learned how to style and braid in my own and it’s been a rewarding experience
Please and can we please talk about the eyelash community, because it’s getting ridiculous- “it’s a luxury not a necessity” and 90% of them aren’t doing them to take care of your lashes 😭

It depends on the African stylist abd where you live. It's like 200-300 in Indianapolis, it takes 2 people and take 5+hrs. But where I use to go in Michigan it was $70-80 and it was done in 3hrs max no matter the style and it was only 1 person. I loved her I was sad and glad when she moved back to Africa for her husband to open his medical business.

I used to think that this was a mostly American thing cause over here in uk the aunties got better during the natural hair movement and what we saw was more 'upscale' or 'luxury' black hair salons popping up, but this year I've been seeing London stylist trying to charge £850 for box braids... yeah... no thank you, ma'am imma just fly to South Africa for a 2 weeks and get my hair done, see family and a holiday! 🙃🤪
I absolutely love that so many people are doing these videos, I’ve been a hairdresser for 23 years and I Love my job and ever since instagram the industry went left ,there’s some people that asked me why I don’t charge for bookings,why a lot of things the new stylist are doing now why I don’t do cause I’m human and I can’t see myself doing anything that I wouldn’t want done to me yes I’ve charged a bit more for my services but it’s because I’ve upgraded on products. I would never I’m my heart overcharge people new or not I treat all my clients like family and above all I love my job I don’t do it for money I do it cause I absolutely love doing hair it’s a passion of mine, I agree with everything that you’ve pointed out it’s sad but I hear it all the time

I have to say that is your fault. I will walk out if they don't understand that they are my contracted employee and you should not allow a person, that you hired, to get away with that. This is why I don't do Black hair salons and just get a haircut at Supercuts or some place like that. It is because of the common and accepted attitude that many Black hairdressers have. They don't realize that they are not the boss and that they are the employee. Put them in thier place and remind them who is in charge if your have to and leave.

Hair stylist don’t actually wanna do hair anymore. They just wanna lay wigs and make a quick $200-$350 dollars without washing, massaging, blowing out ect.

IG stylists are only one sector of stylists. Neighborhood salons still exist and they act NOTHING like these IG “stylists” . Their real licensed cosmetologists with customer service etiquette and sanitation knowledge
I need you to say this louder for ppl in the back. I do agree with this message, however, when folks critique things its usually the most extreme examples and say that's the norm, when its not. Don't get me wrong, these prices are outrageous and when I see a braided style for over $300, I just exit stage left and keep looking. However, there are plenty of places that I can go to get braids for $200-$250 and sometimes get a wash in as an add-on (but I prefer to wash and condition my hair myself tbh). $1,000 braids are not the norm (yet) and the folks who pay for it are FOOLS! IG has gassed folks up 'Charge your worth plus tax!' ma'am please lol
As far as professionalism, I do agree black stylists on a whole are late, it is what it is LOL but that's why it's important for them to be honest and access how long it REALLY takes for them to complete a service. In an ideal world, you might want to complete large knotless braids in 4hrs but be honest sis, that might take you 6hrs...then the person afterwards might have to wait. As far as not being licensed, I don't play those games and I believe it's the customers responsibility to vet whoever is doing their hair. You can't just plop in anyone's chair with no questions asked. Before I allow ANYONE in my hair, I ALWAYS ask them about how their cosmetology training went and their philosophy on hair health (not just styling and weaving). Don't get me wrong, I have seen stylists whose work that I wasn't blown over by but none of them completely butchered my hair and left me in tears traumatized. Those same stylists have a loyal client base that love them so different strokes different folks? I have a regular stylist who is AMAZING and got my hair on the right path!
Finally, I kinda disagree about the whole flying to foreign countries to get braids. Whet? Cost is not just a flight and a hotel! I love my African sisters but they braid too damn tight and you will leave with no edges! From what I have seen, there is little emphasis on the science of healthy growing hair. Now this is just me, but I am NOT flying across the world to get some braids that will only last for 4-5 weeks.
i really think a lot of these ig stylists never went to school and never worked in a salon. theyve just been doing their own hair at home and think they can be a business. like i do my own laundry, doesnt mean i know how to run a dry cleaning business.

Exactly. I go to a neighborhood hair salon only. Online or phone booking, no advance deposit needed, excellent professionalism and hair CARE. My stylist knows what she’s doing and is booked weeks out. I go to the African shop for braids. These IG stylists are out of their minds.
The problem is these folks do hair but are NOT professionals. They want to charge expert prices with mediocre customer care

No it’s true, they want to be influencers. I bought a wig from JC strands bc I saw another wig stylist tag the hair and it looked good. Tell me why she didn’t send the hair for months and I bought it for my birthday. I look up the girl who runs the company, she got pics of her on a boat with Birkins no joke !!😅 I had to buy a second wig for my birthday which was so stressful and annoying, and I called the BBB and found where she files her company and filed with the attorney general in her state. I disputed with my bank and got my money back. She suddenly realized where my order was once I got the authorities involved and I got that wig for free. It took a lot of effort and monthssss of effort but this girl not gonna live like jayda and meanwhile she ruining my birthday. Anyways, moral of the story is don’t let these girls play in your face!!

A lot of people are saying “that why black women need to learn to do their own hair” I’ve been doing my own hair for nearly 10 years but I have scoliosis. I simply can’t do my hair myself more than once every two weeks. I used to do my own box braids but I can’t anymore because it takes me three days and the back pain is unbearable. We should be able to go pay for a REASONABLY priced service like anyone else because it becomes an accessibility issue. And since we are the MOST judged when our hair is not perfect it’s just not fair.

I stopped going to black hair stylists because every time I went to the salon I was mistreated. The customer service was terrible. I will never forget when I got kicked out of a salon with DRIPPING WET HAIR. The stylist came an hour late and she told me she FORGOT to schedule me. When she started washing my hair, I can tell she didn’t know what she was doing. She then complained about my hair being tangled while YANKING my hair with a SMALL TOOTH COMB. She told me to GET OUT and blamed me for “ not combing my hair before I came “. After that I stopped going to stylists and I learned how to do my own hair. I had a lot of bad experiences with stylists but that was the WORST experience I had.

This is why I learned how to braid myself. I know the tension I want, the style I want, I take as long as I want until I finish, I can try out different styles without spending money. One of the best skills I learned in 2015, 0 regrets

I was just about to say I’m telling. Fuck that. I had to register my business and pay the registration and hire a business attorney. And then these bitches get mad at “white folks” because they’re following rules and regulations.
I had a bad IG hair experience. Went to this girl’s home. She had a dog and did not inform me. She had dishes and stuff on her floor. Less than an hour before the appointment she tells me to get hair gel on top of the hair I already bought. I get to the place and she starts braiding for about an hour until she just stops and says “I’m gonna take these out, sorry I’m not used to using this hair.” And she takes my few braids out and then sends me home. This was two days before I was headed to New York to see my family for Thanksgiving. I wanted to have nice hair to see my family. 😵💫 I went home, put on a RUclips tutorial and did my own box braids myself WITH the hair this stylist didn’t know how to use. I went to the store with my new style and was getting tons of compliments on the hair I washed, trimmed and styled myself. Been doing my own hair ever since, can’t nothing stop me now ❤ I you wanna braid your own hair I definitely recommend buying a hair braiding mirror on Amazon. It’s a lil tri-fold mirror that can attach to your door etc. it lets you see the back of your head and get your parts right. Do this stuff yourself if you can y’all 😮💨

As a black woman I’ve never felt discriminated against for my hair outside of the black community. I’ve worn my natural hair on interviews and still got the job. Worn it crazily (well kept crazy lol) in public and it was fine. People outside of the black community look at my hair in fascination it’s those inside the community that ever had something negative to say. My experience.
I will admit that these women may speak more freely with us about their opinion considering the common background.

I have a different experience. People outside of the Black community have said hurtful things about my hair for as long as I can remember. I've lived in three states (Midwest, South and Northeast) and five cities since I've gone natural and the comments don't seem to stop or change. When I was 17 and wearing a twist out a WM told me I looked like I'd been electrocuted. Several WM told me my natural 4c hair made me look like a little boy. Usually when WW look at me, I see them look at my hair first. At a previous job, my boss (a WW) would comment on my hair whenever I changed it. "okay so what's this style about?" Or "I actually like this style, I don't know what that last one was."

Best advice I can give is call state board. If they aren’t licensed they will be fined and mandated to go to school.
If they are licensed and a “wash at home” call state board. Violation.
Working from home, check their license, there are requirements for that. Never cash app or Zelle pay with credit card only. So when they get stupid with the deposit and rules you can submit a claim.
Teach a valuable lesson on accountability, you cannot do whatever you want without repercussions.

I saw the prices that so many women are paying for just a ‘wig lay’ with no care for their hair underneath. It’s distressing and it happens in communities where proper services are scarce.

As a white girl with the most stereotypical white hair, I spent as much time sussing out hairstylists when I moved too far from the only one I trusted, as I spent searching for a chiroprachter who literally messes with spines. I know we don't have much in common when it comes to hair, but just as a woman, hair is so damn important to us, and I am so sorry that there are people taking advantage of your unique situation. Another thing that annoys me about these ig hairstylists is when the pictures of their work is not consistent with the work they do on your hair.
Yup, it's bc alot of IG stylists steal photos from other stylists and tag them as their own; you have to do a lot of research to make sure that the photos being posted is the stylist's actual work.

Hey hairstylist here. I love the content! Playing devils advocate I find that a lot of the consumers honestly book someone because of how much followers they have rather than the quality of their work. I would offer services like washing hair, detangling, conditioning at a decent price and A lot of people would not book it. And go to someone who’s more popular. My point is there is decent hairstylist out here they just may not be as popular as others.

Consumers go based on what “looks pretty”. These trash stylists are getting tons of followers because they know how to present their pictures online. They usually have high definition cameras (newer iPhone cameras are excellent these days), good lighting, the pretty backgrounds (that leaf wall with the neon lights lol), and they only post the clients who are “conventionally attractive”. I would suggest that you invest in the higher quality photos, the nice backgrounds, and DON’T use filters. A great presentation plus great quality service will blow your sales through the roof. Put thought into your captions and hashtags and post consistently. Always have the city you work in in your bio and tagged as the location of your post. Don’t hashtag cities in states no where near you. As a last result buy followers, people are more likely to trust a page with a high follower count. Just stay realistic (5k - 10k), your likes shouldn’t be severely disproportionate from your followers.

Hey another stylist here, I completely agree and as someone who does provide wash, treatments, trims etc with all of my services I find it super discouraging when the “popular ig stylist” becomes the standard for all stylists.
Great point, but I also think it’s intimidating for new clients when they feel like they have to book 4 svcs for one hairstyle. I just want it included in the price. I don’t want to book shampoo, dry, condition, trim, style and curl lol make it a package or something. I think that’s just as big a problem. I stick w simpler stylists bc the anxiety of booking and all the extra charges and hassles is a lot 😩 I purposefully look for “less popular” stylists bc the quality is often just as good if not better. More ppl should think this way but they wanna follow what’s popular.

I drove 1hr to get my lashes done… she text me 6 minutes before the appointment to let me know she didn’t have any of the lengths I had booked for… I told her it would of been nice if she let me know beforehand but all she could say was she didn’t have time to. My appointment was booked 2weeks in advance.

People don't like to have receptionists now because it saves money but they really need someone to handle some of these small but important customer interactions that they probably genuinely do not have time for.
I went to an Instagram famous hairstylist for a lace wig. I purchase the wig on my own for $450 from a direct supplier. She charged one $150 to install it. Curls and styling were a separate fee. She also charged $20 for a down payment In addition to an expected tip.
I went in and nobody greeted me, people were ratchet AF. I sat there while they keke'd and braided my hair for the wig install. Once done, I had to place myself under the dryer and turn on the machine while the stylist yelled instructions from the front of the shop. I sent her questions a month later and no response. No customer service.
If I was treated better I would have payed the fee no problem but the fact that they were rude, I had to place myself under the dryer and no customer service was the straw for me. I said first and last time and have been practicing how to lay a lace because who has the time?

I 100% agree with everything you said. I had THEE worst experience ever in 2021 when I got butterfly locs. The stylist told me one price then I got there and she started adding on for everything. “Your hair is too long/thick so it’ll be an extra $200” then she told me I didn’t bring enough hair so I went out and bought more hair which wasn’t cheap THEN halfway through my hair she says I ran out of hair(After I got the amount of hair she just told me to go get!) that’ll be an extra $50 for me to use my hair. My total by the time she finished was WAY more than she originally said. Not even to mention she did them so tight! For TWO WEEKS I could not sleep because of how tight my hair was. Plus I had sores all in my scalp from the tightness. I cried so hard after that and I had a hard time trusting stylists after that. THANK God I found a great braider who’s been my go to since the beginning of 2022 she gets me right every time. It’s just so hard nowadays to find people who actually care about their customers and not just the money.

People forget that the money comes at the cost of being in customer service. I see it all the time waitressing. Like yeah, the money can be really good, but you have to be around people all day, even when you're not really in the mood. It's not for everyone but some people just can't see past the dollar signs and then complain that they hate it.

The fact that we as a collective have allowed these stylists to inflate the prices so high without any possessional schooling or license is honestly a huge fail on our part as consumers. I don't really go to the shop but if I did I wouldn't anymore. These stylists don't even take care of your hair or wash it. They expect you to come pre-washed, blow dried and sometimes even straightened out. Its the audacity. I would boycott them if I were frequently going. If I'm paying hundreds of dollars for hair then it should be washed, maintained, the experience should be classy/ professional and the stylist should be punctual.
I think if the licensing board got rid of the relaxer requirement and replaced it with doing a wig install or braiding service for the test this would do a good bit to solve the problem

I feel like part of it was consumers feeling guilty and wanting to support their black stylist even when they were lacking in professionalism or started increasing prices. These hairstylists are the reason i shaved my head a few years ago. I was sick of not being able to find anyone to do my hair for a decent price, and i didn’t know how to do it myself. So i shaved it & started over fresh. Now I’m a natural girl. But it was definitely NOT by choice, but by force b/c of these weird ass hairstylists.
I literally just did this 6 months ago. I was so depressed and nobody wanted to properly wash my hair for me that I began to yank out due to being stressed and depressed

Ranting: I remember I had an appointment to get my hair braided, and the stylist told me she had to reschedule me because she was sick. I said okay I understand, can I receive my deposit back because I needed my hair done that day. This girl tells me no you have to reschedule, I don't give back deposits. I had a similar experience where I texted a stylist and ask was she going to be at the shop for a specific day and she said yeah. I paid the deposit and showed up on that day and the shop was closed. I kept trying to reach out to her and she blocked me.

The whole outrageous prices for hair stylist’s Instagram also happened when I would go for highlights and a cut. My hair lifts so easily but a few years ago they started telling me I have to go to them multiple times to get the lightness I wanted. Um what? Since when? The second to last time I went to a stylist I paid $700 for full highlight and cut. The woman charged by the hour and took her sweet time with all baby lights, taking almost four hours to foil my hair, then all this artistic melting of a million different toners AND spent so long having me pose for damn pictures…. And it was no better than any other time I got my hair done. The last time I found someone who charged less, ONLY $500 for partial highlight and cut. 😑 the woman was so mean to her assistant I could tell the poor girl had to go to the back to cry. The stylist was working on me and two others at the same time, just hustling. After she finished and showed me the back of my hair and I went to touch it and she snapped and ordered me not to touch it with her eyes all big and crazy. She then took me to the Ferrari showroom next door to take photos of my hair. She kept telling me how to pose and asked what was wrong with my face when it wasn’t coming out right and I’m like wtf woman I’m not your damn hair model. Worst of all, when I went home, I saw she left tiger stripes.
There is definitely an issue with the culture of hair stylists having bad attitudes, over charging and not caring that this is YOUR hair that YOU will be wearing, not their walking advertisement. Its like these people see you as their personal content for their social media and not a human being wanting to look and feel good about themselves. I ended up learning how to do it all myself.

And for a lot of us older people, older meaning at least those in our 30s and up, we know what’s right and what’s normal. This is not how we grew up. We grew up having to go to the girl at the front desk so she can schedule us in on the computer or on the Hairdresser’s physical planner.
Our trims would be scheduled, our perms would be scheduled. She would let you know weeks in advance that she wasn’t going to be available, the price was discussed and understood. There were no deposits or exorbitant fees because there was communal trust. I don’t know how we let such a wonderful thing fall apart over the years.
I miss those days! I agree this type of trust and respect is gone! The problem is like its stated they all want to flex for the gram! They act like them doing your hair is a privilege. It truly is very disgusting!
I think it's a mix of things. Even in a lot of salons now it's hard to get shit scheduled because no one wants to pay a receptionist so it falls on the customer to book online or chase down a stylist. This is because of the way technology has changed it's cheaper do it this way and not enough of a problem so far but having a receptionist is just better customer service. I hope businesses start bringing them back.
The other thing is a lot of people are exploiting the shifting attitude towards service workers. There's been push to treat service workers with respect and elevate them because customer service of any type is genuinely hard. I remember a few years ago seeing Millennials humble bragging about how they don't complain when they get bad service. That's great when people are acting in good faith but bad actors exploit these attitudes.
Service workers don't need to be treated like shit but a closed mouth doesn't get fed. Report these people to the better business burea, take them to small claims court, call your state licensing agency, etc...there are remedies for shitty service.
And learn to take care of your own hair. My hair relaxed and to my bra strap. I go twice a year for trims because I don't want to cut my own hair but otherwise I can relax, deep condition and style my own hair for most occasions and it is healthy. It's not hard. If I have a special occasion come up I'll go but otherwise I do my hair at home and I'm not depedent on these people.
Thisss. I miss going to the salon, appt made and STARTS ON TIME. Picked a style out of the magazine/brought a printout lol and actually walked out with that style, didn’t have to pay more for a trim if I needed it. And my natural hair was maintained and looked great afterward!
I stopped getting my hair done when a lady burned my hair to my scalp. To this day my hair is fragile in the back. Bad customer service in the black community is causing many to braid their own hair. For the prices people are charging it needs to be an experience. If your charging $1000 and up you need to provide meals and a comfortable inviorment. you should be on time, professional and kind.

I feel this way about the nail industry as well. There are great, professional, independent Techs out here, but people can’t wait to spend their money elsewhere and be treated less than. I’m befuddled.

I have been a hairstylist for 7 years and I do agree with a lot of the points that was made. I think people also need to know the person behind the brand, research who the stylist is. If you don't like deposits, being in someones home, or their rules don't book. There are stylist out here that go beyond for their clients; showing up drained, providing comfortable spaces, professionalism etc. Getting your hair done is a form of self care and an energy exchange, when your appointment is over you should feel good! we're human so everything will not be perfect 100% of the time but when you find the stylist you respect STICK with them. The stylist that are showing up, giving quality work and giving good professional energy should be appreciated and acknowledged.
Thats why I said it's never going to change bc people like rude and popular people bc they get to be closely associated to popularity. It's sad. I had to retire from braiding a while ago because when I was washing, conditioning, blow drying and braiding for $250, they started going to the braiders that charge $50 for just braiding hair dirty and all. I was like no ma'am.

after YEARS! I finally found a stylist that is KIND and respectful and does great work and also charges reasonable prices AND has an actual hair salon and is not doing my hair in her kitchen with her toddlers running around. I thank God! I hope she never moves away or something like that I would be devastated. Its been a struggle fr!
I'm starting to feel this way about "estheticians/ wax/lash" people as well. The amount of harmful content I see where they are just blatantly doing extra stuff or charging crazy money just to glue ali express lashes on with hair glue is BEYOND crazy. Whle I'm only really a customer of the wax people, I've been looking into lash and skins services, but I'm immediately turned off by the booking rules and blatant crazy stuff they post.
Yep girls are ‘doing lashes’ now too. But lashes are a luxury service. Before the boom most licensed estheticians at spas charged like 250-300 to install mink lashes.
Now these girls are charging much less but they have a certificate and are using poor quality products
I had my one tried and true esthetician and I moved states away from her and honestly I’m considering moving back just to have her back. I was with her through price increases and all because she was always good to me. Customer service was A1

I'm at the point where I just want to grow my natural hair out just so I can wear my hair...... I'm tired of paying $250 plus for EVERYTHING. This woman charged $100 - $150 for a silk press & charges $30 for a trim. What is the $100-$150 for??? Why isn't a trim, wash, & styling included?!?! I want to be done. I really do.
I feel like the industry standard is $75 - $100 but it usually includes a trim damaged ends and then more for an actual cut.

If you’re a professional who is committed to the maintenance of your clients’ natural hair, an end trim should be included in the silk press service if it’s necessary. But if it’s a full haircut then that’s an additional fee.
I learned how to manage my own hair (no relaxer 4c) once I saw the prices. I noticed a big increase of “stylist” claiming to specialize in natural hair. They increased the prices for naturals but the service and outcome was not good. I then realized I knew more about natural hair then the new age “stylist”. I consulted one women who didn’t have natural hair herself nor did she seem to have experience with it🚩 🚩
I remember when a hairstylist tried to cancel my hair appointment because I was the only appointment of the day. Like huh. Ma’am my schedule allows for this day not tomorrow. Better believe I was in that chair that day.
Sadly it’s not just hairstylists. Mail and makeup artist too.
I’ll go to the 90’s style brick and mortar beauty shop before I even attempt to think about booking these scamstylers. This is why black women and girls need to learn how to do their own hair. You need to take the time to care for your hair and know what you need and don’t need.
Oooh Chile. I did the right thing going to cosmetology school. I had a feeling this would be worth it, but im glad to have it reinforced. We literally learn chapters upon chapters about professionalism, bacteria and safety etc. And a lot of it is common sense. I highly recommend anybody going into this industry to go to cos school, I don't regret it ❤️
And yes in cos school they teach us that a wash is included in every service.

I have no concept of what braids cost but to buy human hair in my texture is so expensive! What does the braiding hair run for and how long does it take to do the braids? $150 seems very reasonable considering you have to buy hair and the labor involved!
Ima tell it like this... it's so important for us black girls/ textured hair girls to LEARN how to care for your own hair! Find your holy grail products: leave in, shampoo/deep conditions & oil.. learn how to style your natural hair and PRACTICE! also learning to do protective styles when you need a break...I do both and really feel like I've mastered how to do my own hair...I just did knotless boho braids and I AM in L O V E 😂🥰 ...I'm gone save this money and nurture my hair! Having a great stylist is great but you really need to know how to do your own in case you can't afford getting your hair done or your stylist isn't available or if you like me you just can't find a good one!! 😉 good luck girliess 💜

The hardest part is seeing what works for you in terms of products. I know from my experience it took me a long time to find the right products that work for my curly hair, plus I was doing it by myself when I had nowhere to turn to and that was over a decade ago when going natural/curly wasn’t as big as it is now.

I purchased a mannequin head and watched dozens of videos. I learned to braid my own hair and use a mirror to see the back of my head
I hate it because I’m a braider and I used to promote myself instagram but not anymore bc of the bad name. I only charge $150-$175 for small knotless. I used deposit to buy the hair and then I wash and detangle. I also learn to braid the hair being slightly stretched rather than blown out.
Dang I'm a licensed cosmetologist. I stopped doing hair after my divorce because depression and losing interest in everything but I need to get back at it. I would do a whole head of single braids for $175 or less depending on who. I was also very professional.
Hope you find your way back to the professional. There’s a need (really demand!) for quality, professional, and affordable stylist. Cash in sis!

It’s always wild to me because here in my country (Equatorial Guinea) washing your hair is a max of 2$, the most I’ve payed for my hair was 60$, that includes wash, blow out, and the braids, plus it was 60 because I got the hair from the salon, if I bought it myself it would’ve been around 50. Sometimes they will even include doing your eyebrows or a mask (1$)

I wanted to get extensions and straighten my hair for my wedding and this lady rudely told me that she can’t do my hair if my extensions are “fake” or from China/Amazon! She had the nerve to tell me this a day before my wedding 😲! Luckily my sister in law connected me with her stylist who is really nice, sweet, and professional.

My grandmother is a licensed beautician and cosmetologist and when I showed her the part in your video where the girl was charging $1k for Knotless and your hair has to be blow dried and washed, she turned to me and said “Hell if she making $1k off of doing something simple as that, I might as well do it for free” 😭 my grandma don’t do people hair no more, but it was a funny comment she made
the problem is that ppl are going to instagram stylists period. a real hairstylist/braider isn’t going to require a deposit, nor a terms and conditions statement just to sit in their chair. the quality and quantity just doesn’t match 🤷🏾♀️. if y’all don’t start sending these folks names to the state 😂
I have a friend with 4c hair and she is given up on going somewhere to get her hair done . She has taken the time to learn and is doing it herself . It’s ashame that it’s come to that ..I wish that these stylists would come down to earth and realize people cannot just shell out 1,000 plus for hair when they have kids and rent etc….

A stylist said she'll charge me $475 with a $150 deposit just to dye my hair red (no highlights or anything else) These new stylists are definitely taking advantage of people's money and then turn around to try and normalize it....

as someone with anxiety, stuff like this makes me want to avoid salons even more 😔 i always worry about embarrassing myself or coming off as stupid so i’d rather just stay home or struggle doing my own hair and painting my own nails

I have anxiety and I learned how to do my hair specifically for this reason. Personally, I just do not like someone else being in control of my hair if that makes sense.
I learned how to do it naturally curly and silk pressing and in the process also learned what is good for my hair and what I should do to continue to maintain my hair health. Thankfully I never had a bad experience at a hair salon but my anxiety did push me to be more self reliant and taught me more about myself. It was especially helpful during the lockdown when everything was closed. I want to learn how to do box braids at some point.
I say if it’s possible and if you have the time and resources definitely learn how to do your own hair. I will say take a day or two off when doing it and also to have a LOT of patience.

I love that you spoke on the customer service. I noticed that a few years ago myself after I finally decided to go back to outsource my hair, nails, and lashes. And I wanted to support my peers so I started trying out these social media stylists. As someone who’s mainly been in customer service roles I know how a customer should be treated and I noticed these people are treating their customers as if they are friends and family. They talk to people all types of ways, just go MIA cause they felt like it, want you to understand every issue they have but don’t care about your issues, and then they attempt to blame the customer for anything that goes wrong with the service. Let’s just say outside of my nails I went back to doing everything myself.
They want you to bring hair, hair supplies, come with your hair washed and blow dried. Then charge you $300 I'll be damned
I am a licensed cosmetologist who believes in the foundation of someone’s hair which is the scalp to be healthy. By not washing or treating someone’s scalp they are doing their potential clients a disservice. Lots of “stylist” who focus more on the profit and not the craft are usually the ones that aren’t licensed, they are unprofessional and overpriced because they know it’s a necessity by many. If there are people that are paying those prices and having those experiences you get what you settle for. If you see they have some red flag check it out do your research because I’m sure your aren’t the only one who’s invested your money and got a slap in the face service. But I promise you that like myself and my fellow cosmetologist who can educate and slay some styles we are out there but don’t settle if you aren’t 100% sure!
The funny thing is the actual stylist that do wash and blow dry your hair because they are required to, don’t even charge those ridiculous prices. I am natural and get my natural hair braided every 6 weeks. My stylist never overbooks, always give me a steam treatment because I am a loyal customer and when she did increase prices it went from paying $100 to $125 for full service. It is always an experience when I get my hair done and I really just go there to relax. That is how it should be.
All of the stress from trying to find a decent stylist to help me with my hair caused me to cut it off. Every time I went to a stylist they act like they didn’t want to do it but then charge me a large amounts, terrible customer service and lack luster results and major damage to my hair. I went to a barber shop and I’ve had a pixie cut for 2 years. I feel happy, I feel free by not being bound by the frustration of not having my hair done because I can’t trust anyone who is professional.

My first time getting Large Knotless braids to my waist was $280 with no downpayment as I saw this lady once before. She provided the extensions, she washed, deep conditioned, trimmed, combed my hair again and it was 5 hours going into 6. She was also very professional and helpful in my healthy hair journey. This would be back 2021 November. Its hard to find honest people like that who arent just there to catch the bag, but actually care for the health of your hair.

They keep doing this because we are allowing them to do it and when they do get questioned they say we do not respect their work no their price is ridiculous and some of their hairstyles don't even last a month if i am paying over 1k for a style i expect that to last for the whole yr lol

These prices are a joke. In germany we pay 100€ for knotless, buttlength, small braids. Yeah, the customer service isnt the best, but we have many options.
Whenever I see stylists with ridiculous rules I know they don’t care for their clients and block their pages. The “rules” are written with such disdain you just know they have no regard for the client experience and are going to be ripping through your hair.
“If your hair has blunt ends your appt is canceled” GOODBYE MA’AM. If you don’t know how to work with different hair types and styles, get the requisite training first before ruining your client’s day and wasting their time. Stylists like this have seem to have forgotten they are performing a service, not doing a favor.
The same thing is happening with nails. People need to be accountable too. Folks like to brag about the hundreds of dollars they spend on their nails and hair. It's the flexing too that allows the price gouging.
The real issue and cause is desperation and/or laziness, that is how the instagram “hair stylist” are able to exist AND thrive
I always experimented with my hair even before I went natural b/c my pockets didn't always match my need to have my hair done regularly. I don't think it's wrong for someone to pay for their time and supplies, but the price has to match the service. Most Regular 9-5 aren't even paying that much for 40hrs a week. So if I'm paying 1k for BRAIDS, I better get hair included, a wash & blow dry, a trim, educated on the products you're using and how to care for my hair during the braids and afterwards, a comfortable chair, 2 mimosas, a snack and great customer service. Cuz when I used to go to the salon in the early 2000s, I at least got 1/2 of that for waaaayy less. Like that video said, you got 100 rules, no booth rental, and I'm in your house. My anxiety of going to a stylist and being upset with the poor service, quality, or treatment of my natural hair is why I just stopped going. I'm not confrontational so I rather avoid putting myself in a situation where I might have to say something that I know will only go south due to these new stylists not having good customer service and caring about my experience. RUclips has taught me how to get a good style at my own budget.
I also remember hearing that it’s important for hairstylists to be able to identify skin/scalp issues as they are often the only ones who will find the issue and let your client know. I would also think that its important to have that knowledge for braid and weave installations, I remember on ANTM they refused to give a girl a weave one year cause she has psoriasis and they were worried about making it worse
The Africans braided my knotless braids for $180 before tip including the hair. How tf are these stylists getting away with charging 1k for braids??

Yiep it’s as expensive also in Canada. When I first came here from Africa for my uni, I was shocked! So I learned to crochet myself and decided to just lock my hair afterwards. I’ve started my micro-lock myself and they are thriving since!!!

Y’all when my hair started thinning from stress and depression I stopped going to these IG stylists. I actually had to sit down, do hella research and even pray to find a good licensed stylist who could help me keep and regrown my hair. My hair has been my crown for years and seeing it fall apart and seriously neglected in the hands of these IG stylists broke me. I’d get my hair done only to come back in tears and I couldn’t have it anymore. I finally found a stylist and I feel like a little girl again, excited to get her hair done! I also spend more on my hair then ever and that I do gladly! Stylists with a passion don’t get afraid to charge your worth we’re not afraid of pricing, we’re afraid of the neglect. Most of the licensed professionals I’ve found are actually very afraid of Charging these IG prices, they also tend to stick to their regulars and are not as active online, making them extremely hard to find. I found mine by stopping a girl with beautiful healthy hair to ask who her stylist is. She only took me on referral cause exactly she deals with regulars and has regular follow-ups/ treatment plans with each one. I’m slowly recovering from my depression but I can’t tell y’all how encouraging seeing my hair grow back with each appointment has been. My stylist has spoken life into me through her magical hands - I’m so grateful for her. I feel like a queen in her chair and it’s become a huge part of my self care routine. I can’t wait to be back to my original length and I know I’ll cry when it happens.
Being a black man with locs, I haven’t had as severe of moments but I can relate to this stuff getting crazy. My loctician was licensed but was always late even when I would book a week in advance and as her first client, would overbook and stop my appointment just to start others, and raise prices while lying about them being like that all the time. Eventually I just stopped going to her an learned how to style and braid in my own and it’s been a rewarding experience
Please and can we please talk about the eyelash community, because it’s getting ridiculous- “it’s a luxury not a necessity” and 90% of them aren’t doing them to take care of your lashes 😭

It depends on the African stylist abd where you live. It's like 200-300 in Indianapolis, it takes 2 people and take 5+hrs. But where I use to go in Michigan it was $70-80 and it was done in 3hrs max no matter the style and it was only 1 person. I loved her I was sad and glad when she moved back to Africa for her husband to open his medical business.

I used to think that this was a mostly American thing cause over here in uk the aunties got better during the natural hair movement and what we saw was more 'upscale' or 'luxury' black hair salons popping up, but this year I've been seeing London stylist trying to charge £850 for box braids... yeah... no thank you, ma'am imma just fly to South Africa for a 2 weeks and get my hair done, see family and a holiday! 🙃🤪
I absolutely love that so many people are doing these videos, I’ve been a hairdresser for 23 years and I Love my job and ever since instagram the industry went left ,there’s some people that asked me why I don’t charge for bookings,why a lot of things the new stylist are doing now why I don’t do cause I’m human and I can’t see myself doing anything that I wouldn’t want done to me yes I’ve charged a bit more for my services but it’s because I’ve upgraded on products. I would never I’m my heart overcharge people new or not I treat all my clients like family and above all I love my job I don’t do it for money I do it cause I absolutely love doing hair it’s a passion of mine, I agree with everything that you’ve pointed out it’s sad but I hear it all the time

I just do my hair myself and like home girl said about wearing her bonnet , HEAVY on that cause if I’m tired I just scarf it or bonnet it through and throughhh, like no one has that kind of money for that and the list of stipulations gurl KEEP IT I’ll do it my fuckng self 🙄
