  • I decided to make the most of the run of superb weather recently on the Isle of Skye and headed across to Sligachan to bag another Cuillin Munro, Bruach Na Frithe, on a day with blue skies and views as far as the eye could see I stopped on the summit for a lot longer than usual, just to try and take it all in. A short detour just below the summit gave me a close up of The Basteir Tooth, with Am Basteir another one on my 'to do' list. A fantastic day out and one I'll definitely be doing again, maybe when the snow comes.

    Thank you Mark for sharing this incredible experience.I was holding my breath at more than one point . I was looking for still images of this area and I stumbled on your film. My father climbed the Cuillin with his brothers as a boy in the late 1920s early 30s ( both his parents were Skye crofters ) I think this is why he got through the extreme training at Achnacarry for serving as a Commando in WW2 and later took part in many landings and raids. I have no doubt that experience and teachings of these mountains is what saved him in terms of nerve and spirit . He took my mother on their honeymoon to Skye after they got through the War and he casually suggested a wee walk , this was his wee walk. ..She had no idea where they were going and just had a pair of stout boots and a head scarf . She never forgot that day and could still remember every detail as she aged ( he passed before she did ) and when I was with her in the last days of her 92 years on this earth , I asked her to tell me again , she described the beauty of the view and the way the mist came down and my fathers voice guiding her to wait till the sun burned it all away .

    Did this about 25 yrs ago, only the other way around, taking the ridge of Bruach na Frithe first. Good video, really enjoyed it .

    Wow, Superb video and stunning views. Had watched your video a few weeks ago and was really inspired by it to do the hike up on Friday whilst staying at Broadford. Perfect weather. Would love to do it again without having my dogs with me. Thanks so much for sharing. 🥾🥾💚⛰️

    Brilliant video just what I needed in lock down, thank goodness the mountains will still be there when this is all over, .Many thanks for keeping me sane and stay safe off and on the mountains at this crazy time.

      Graham Harris Thanks Graham, glad this helped preserve a bit of sanity in these strange times. Even though I live in the Cairngorms I’m abiding by the rules and staying on local, low level walks whilst at home, definitely looking forward to getting up on the summits again when this is all over. Stay safe.

    Wow! Cracking video, stunning views! I do hope to summit this. Nearly made it in May, but had my two dogs with me and the youngest struggled on the scree. You got a superb day for it. Walked up Allt Dearg to the lower slopes of the Corrie on Monday when I was up. Was so sad to leave such a beautiful place. 🩵👏🤩

    Thanks for posting! Climbed this mountain in 2004 and 2005, but from Glen Brittle.

      Rosa Lichtenstein Different, hadn't even considered doing it that way round. Did that make the walk in fairly long though?

      I reckon it's about the same. I didn't start at the sea loch on Glen Brittle, but at a car park a few miles back in land

    Very nice video as always Mark, thank you. Hopefully I'll be up there next year doing a family traverse :) this year just Skurr Dearg, geat weather but my walking friends were uncomfortable to do more - still fantastic! I check your video's to see the routes and get a feel.

    I did this back in 2011 when I was 16, it's always funny to me how camera's never do justice to how steep it is, I still remember going of the shale and essentially standing on loose rock above the eagles, scary thought, but at the time, I was fine, only thing was my hands were shaking a bit, but mentally, I wasn't worried at all.

      Ramathorn I’m actually not great with heights myself, believe it or not, but it’s amazing what you can do with the right mindset. It’s very easy to overthink things while you’re up there and convince yourself not to carry on.

    Wow, Great video Mark. Really enjoyed it, i'll certainly be subscribing after watching this! Myself and my partner are hoping to head up to Skye late May for the first time, so im now deep into the fun part of researching which walks to tackle with the precious little time that we'll have up there.
    Don't think im quite ready for Sgurr Nan Gillean yet, so maybe Blaven, and this one, and quite possibly a walk out to Sgurr Na Stri, if we've got the time and the weather. Who knows, can't wait.

      Thanks Richard, I'm always genuinely chuffed to bits when people enjoy watching my videos and thanks also for subscribing. I must have said it a 100 times on here but I love Skye, it really can be breathtaking if you get the weather. I got lucky with my time over there as you can see on this one and also on Blaven, which has to be one of my all time favourites, one of the few places where the scenery has literally stopped me in my tracks. I was a bit gutted with Nan Gillean as it was my 100th Munro and had pretty poor visibility on it, can't win them all I guess! I hope you enjoy it on Skye as much as I do and good luck with your adventures. ATB, Mark.

    Nice one Mark. How did you find that one compared to the last one over in Skye. Most likely next year now before I can get over there for a hike. Atb Ray.

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  8 лет назад +2

      Renegade Scot Cheers Ray, this was quite easy compared to Sgurr Nan Gillean, far less exposure, even less if I hadn't descended via the northwest ridge. All in all I'd say this one and Blaven are pretty straightforward, unlike Sgurr Alasdair which I've just done. When I stick the video up for that one you can tell me what you think of the summit...!!

    Lovely video of a nice hill. You should do the south ridge sometime; it's less travelled. Can I ask what maunt you carry your camera on; I'm always amazed that your hand doesn't end up in the shot.

      @MarkBeecroft  7 лет назад +1

      Alasdair Macdonald Thanks for watching Alasdair, I'm on Skye as we speak but the weather is terrible so I'm not sure when I'll be able to squeeze a hill in, but I'll definitely look at your route if I head out to do it again. I've got my GoPro mounted on a fairly standard 'selfie stick'. Telescopic one by Smatree, light but pretty robust. I think it's just practice to be honest, getting used to what angle it needs to be at as some of my earlier ones aren't as good.

    How long did it take u Mark?Never been to Skye and I know this is one of the easier ones there.Up Fort William next month and would love to detour across.

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  8 лет назад +1

      Andy "O" It's definitely one of the easier ones and I think it took about 5 hours give or take a little. If you're looking to nip across and do one though I think I'd recommend Blaven over this one, just my personal opinion but I think it's a nicer hill with better views, and takes around the same length of time

    • @AndyOB

      Ok Mark thanks.Will look into Blaven as well.

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  8 лет назад +1

      Andy "O" No problem Andy, I did Blaven a few weeks ago and it's on my channel too. If you read the captions you can see where I've changed the route slightly to involve more scrambling but if you did the usual route it's very, very straightforward, but still massively impressive with views across to the Cuillin Ridge

    Hi Mark. thanks for that vid,enjoyed.I tried to get up the ridge from Bealach a Mhaim to the summit last winter,but the wind stopped me.Is that the way you came down? The West ridge? Was their any scrambling?

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  7 лет назад

      Hi Dave, glad you enjoyed it mate. I came down via the Northwest ridge and I wouldn't say there was any scrambling that I can think of. No real hands on although it is narrow enough in places to give that feeling of exposure. Might be a different game in winter though I guess! High winds like you had would probably have made me rethink as well 🌬

      Well,just did this hill via the N/W ridge route at the w/e past.Had a fantastic day.There was a bit of fresh snow,but never felt in danger if I took my time.Might not have had the confidence without watching the vid,cheers

      Yes,a little 2 hour lunch break til the mist cleared but superb views.Had a look on your channel for Mhadaidh and Grearaidh but no joy.Have you done these 2,(my next targets) ?

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  7 лет назад +1

      dave hendo Hi Dave, bizarrely I just did them last week! I haven't bothered putting a video together as it was pretty poor as far as visibility goes and I also needed as many points of contact as possible. I got caught in a snowstorm near the summit of the first and was a bit unsure about doing the second as everything rapidly got covered in a layer of ice. Did it but probably shouldn't have as it there were a few twitchy moments!
      If you plan on doing them my advice would be to wait for better weather at least, maybe wear a helmet as well as the scree up to An Dorus is almost as bad as on Sgurr Alasdair. Take the 'easy' route to the left of An Dorus, just before the final narrowing but there is no easy option for the second and it's pretty exposed and a pretty hard scramble to initially.
      If I can help you with anything you else just give me a shout, it's not a problem.

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  8 лет назад +1

      Haha no I didn't, although this one was pretty safe if I'd wanted to, totally different to the summit on the other video I've just uploaded from Sgurr Alasdair, definitely didn't feel like spending much time on that one!

    • @bivouacphotography4768
      @bivouacphotography4768 8 лет назад +1

      No desire to stay the night on the top? I bet the sunset and rise would have been spectacular from up there!

    • @MarkBeecroft
      @MarkBeecroft  8 лет назад

      You're right, they'd have been amazing but the nights have been freezing due to the lack of cloud cover, hitting minus 1 at sea level so would've been even colder up there, and pretty exposed too
